Kongsberg orders more Australian RF sensors for Joint Strike Missile

Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace has ordered a further 180 passive radio-frequency sensors from BAE Systems Australia for the precision-guided, stand-off Joint Strike Missile (JSM).

BAE Systems announced on 21 May that these sensors are in addition to an initial tranche of 20 ordered by Kongsberg in October 2020 and bring the first full-rate production total order to 200.

Production of the new order will begin in 2022 and is part of a broader co-operation agreement between the two companies that has been in operation for the past five years, a company spokesperson told Janes .

The company disclosed in 2017 that an electronic support measure (ESM) receiver being provided to Kongsberg for integration with the JSM "will feature an additional land-attack and littoral attack capability, as well as a two-way communications line for target adjustment and in-flight termination".

Kongsberg said at the same time that the RF seeker sensor will enable the JSM to locate targets on the basis of their electronic signature in addition to the missile's existing advanced imaging infrared sensor.

The miniaturised receiver is understood to weigh less than 2.5 kg and operate at up to 18 GHz in the high-frequency range.

This development comes after Australia's Department of Defence (DoD) signed a NOK150 million (USD18 million) contract with Kongsberg to continue the integration and qualification of the RF seeker into the JSM, which is the only anti-ship cruise missile that can be carried internally by the Lockheed Martin F-35A/C Lightning II Joint Strike Fighters.

Successful JSM missile drop from F-35A (onofficiële vertaling vanuit het Noors)

Defense materiel was responsible for carrying out the successful test drop of the JSM missile from the F-35A in the desert at Edwards Air Force Base in California in February.



Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KDA) develops JSM. Testing takes place as part of the program to integrate JSM into the F-35, under the JPO (Joint Program Office) responsible for the F-35 cooperation program, and is conducted in close cooperation with the US authorities.



The first phases of the JSM integration work are contracted directly with the US authorities. Testing began in 2020, and was conducted with drop from aircraft parked on the ground and into a foam rubber pit. Now the first dropped is done from the air.

"With this first drop, it was checked that one gets separated JSM from an F-35A safely. For that we use an instrumented aircraft", says brigadier Jarle Nergård who is head of the F-35 department of Defence Materiel. This is an aircraft with a variety of sensors for speed, movement, and vibrations, as well as recording of the data bus traffic in the aircraft and communication to the weapon.

"This aircraft is also equipped with three cameras inside the bomb shelter and has mounted a separate camera pod on the wing with another three cameras. In order to analyze exactly what is happening, both the aircraft and the JSM missile are marked with special photo marks that are accurately positioned on both aircraft and missiles. And from that we can see through the videos exactly how the JSM missile behaves on its way out of the bomb shelter on the F-35A," Nergård continues.

Extensive testing

In addition, the KDA has instrumented the missile so that all movements in the missile are recorded, and sent on a data link to the ground. The F-35A aircraft has similar instrumentation so that one knows exactly how the aircraft behaves in the same time period, and this data is also sent by link to the ground. It also flies with Chase i.e. companion aircraft, in the form of a two-seater F-16 with a cameraman in the back seat filming all that happens from a little distance.

All this data and videos are further analysed by the Norwegian team (FMA, KDA, FFI). It is the US Air Force Seek Eagle Office (AFSEO) that approves the integration of JSM on the F-35A, and data from aircraft and videos are analyzed by AFSEO, and the test squadron at Edwards Air Force Base. The data is compared to the data models previously created by both KDA and AFSEO.

"We start simply, and then we build on so that the conditions around separation from the aircraft become more and more challenging. The missile has already been extensively tested throughout its "flight envelope", but some of the tests from the F-35 will also include a longer free flight for the missile," concludes Brigadier Jarle Nergård.

Japan awards Kongsberg another follow-on contract for Joint Strike Missiles

Norwegian company Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace announced on 1 December that it has signed an NOK820 million (USD92.4 million) follow-on contract to provide additional precision-guided Joint Strike Missiles (JSMs) for the Japan Air Self-Defense Force's (JASDF's) growing fleet of Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighters.

The company pointed out that this is the second follow-on contract for JSMs awarded by Japan. The first one, announced on 12 November 2019, had been valued at NOK450 million. A contract to provide "initial deliveries" of the missile, which has been designed to fit in the internal weapons bay of the conventional take-off and landing (CTOL) F-35A, was announced in March 2019 but the value of that initial deal was not revealed.

No details were provided about the number of missiles set to be supplied or the delivery schedule. That said, a Japanese Ministry of Defense (MoD) spokesperson had told Janes on 9 September that Tokyo is expected to start taking delivery of the JSMs from April 2021.

Development of the JSM, which is the only long-range sea- and land-target missile that can be carried internally in the F-35, began in 2008 and was completed in mid-2018 after a series of validation test firings. The missile has a range of about 500 km and can thus be launched from a stand-off distance.

Australia to export sensor for Joint Strike Missile to Norway

Miniaturised defence technologies designed and developed in Australia will be sold to Norway's Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace.

Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace (KONGSBERG) has placed a Purchase Order with BAE Systems Australia for an initial batch of Passive Radio Frequency Sensors for the Joint Strike Missile (JSM).

The order is the first Full Rate Production order of the sensors and is part of a broader co-operation agreement that KONGSBERG and BAE Systems Australia have been successfully operating under for the past five years.

Following initial funding by the Australian Government, KONGSBERG and BAE Systems Australia have continued to invest in the qualification and integration of the Australian sensor into the JSM, providing additional capability to the fifth-generation, long-range, precision-guided, stand-off missile system.

The order follows a set of flight trials that demonstrated the successful integration of the electronic systems into the missile.

KONGSBERG's JSM is highly effective against maritime and land targets, and is the only anti-ship cruise missile that can be carried internally within the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.

Kongsberg Defence Australia's General Manager John Fry said:
"KONGSBERG values the close co-operation between Australia and Norway, both through our work with BAE Systems Australia and the respective national Science and Technology organisations to achieve significant capability enhancements for precision weapons."

"This co-operation further demonstrates KONGSBERG's willingness to work closely with Australian Defence Industry and provide opportunities within their Global Supply Chain for ongoing export opportunities."

BAE Systems Australia Managing Director Defence Delivery Andrew Gresham said:
"BAE Systems is a specialist developer of Advanced Miniature Digital Electronic Support Measures Systems which provides Radio Frequency situational awareness that enables rapid decision-making."

"This is a great example of niche technology developed in Australia and which will add to the nation's defence exports."

The Australian designed technology was originally developed with the support of the Australian Governments Priority Industry Capability Program. Under this Defence-funded program BAE Systems Australia received a grant in 2013 to help commercialise this innovative technology.

Japan to begin receiving Joint Strike Missiles from April 2021

Tokyo is expected to start taking delivery of precision-guided Joint Strike Missiles (JSMs) for the Japan Air Self-Defense Force's (JASDF's) growing fleet of Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II Joint Strike Fighters from April 2021, a Japanese Ministry of Defence (MoD) spokesperson told Janes on 9 September.

The missiles, which have been designed to fit in the internal weapons bay of the F-35A, have a range of about 500 km and can thus be launched from a stand-off distance.

In November 2019 manufacturer Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace announced that it had signed a NOK450 million (USD49.2 million) follow-on contract to provide additional JSMs for the JASDF's F-35As. The move came after Kongsberg announced in March 2019 that it had signed a contract to provide an undisclosed number of "initial" JSMs for Japan's F-35A fighters.

In fiscal year 2018 (FY 2018) Tokyo allocated JPY2.2 billion (USD20.8 million) to the JASDF for the acquisition of air-launched stand-off missiles, including JPY2.16 billion for the purchase of JSMs. It also budgeted JPY7.9 billion in FY 2019, and JPY13.6 billion in FY 2020 for JSM procurement.

That said, Tokyo also plans to acquire the Lockheed Martin AGM-158B Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile – Extended Range (JASSM-ER) and the AGM-158C Long Range Anti-Ship Missile (LRASM) to meet a requirement for air-launched stand-off missiles for the JASDF's multirole fighter aircraft.

A Japanese MoD official had told Janes in January that Tokyo is looking to procure those weapon systems from the United States "as soon as possible" for fitment onto JASDF F-15J Eagle fighters to enhance the platforms' capabilities to effectively counter attacks at longer ranges.

This Norwegian missile could make the LCS a lot deadlier

The Littoral Combat Ship is often criticized for being under-armed. In fact, its main weapon for anti-surface warfare is reportedly a version of the AGM-114 Hellfire (after several false starts with other missiles). Now, don't get us wrong. The Hellfire is a good missile, and it has made plenty of enemy tanks and terrorists go boom.

But against an enemy ship on the high seas, it's an iffy option.

But the Hellfire may soon be a secondary option.

At this year's SeaAirSpace Expo, Kongsberg and Raytheon have proposed a solution – using the Naval Strike Missile on the LCS. According to a U.S. Navy release from 2014, the Independence-class littoral combat ship USS Coronado (LCS 4) test-fired the NSM during RIMPAC 2014.

NSM offers longer range than the Hellfire (at least 100 nautical miles compare to the Hellfire's 4.85), and a much bigger warhead (265 pounds to the Hellfire's 20). In other words, this missile has a lot more "stopping power" against any threat the LCS could face.

But the missile is also relatively light, coming in at 770 pounds overall. The Mk 54 MAKO Lightweight Hybrid Torpedo comes in at 608 pounds. This means that the embarked MH-60R Seahawk helicopters on a littoral combat ship could also carry these – and Kongsberg demonstrated that with a model at the display.

"Helicopter sold separately," the representative said, jokingly. But the joke could very well be on an adversary – as the helicopter extends the stand-off reach the LCS would have. The helicopter capability would also add the ability to launch from an offset – complicating the targeting for an enemy.

NSM is already in service with Norway, equipping the Fridtjof Nansen-class frigates, the Skjold-class corvettes, and is in use on Norway's F-16 Fighting Falcons. It replaced the Penguin in Norwegian service.

Kongsberg also displayed a mock-up of the Joint Strike Missile, a slightly larger version of the NSM, featuring a range of at least 150 nautical miles. Even with the increased size, a handout provided by Kongsberg reps at SeaAirSpace 2017 indicated that the missile can still be carried internally by the F-35 Lightning II.

In one sense, this would be going "back to the future." In the 1990s, the United States Navy equipped the SH-60B Seahawks with the AGM-119 Penguin anti-ship missile – also from Kongsberg. The Penguin also was a mainstay of Norway's military during the 1980s and 1990s.

De passieve Radio Frequency sensor / Electronic Support Measures ontvanger, in combinatie met slimme software (kunstmatige intelligentie, KI) is primair bedoelt voor "sense and avoidance" van dreigingen.   En kan uiteraard ook gebruikt worden om deze dreigingen direct aan te vallen.  Dus geen Surpression Enemy Air Defense (SEAD), maar DEAD, Destruction of Enemy Air Defense.

Het  JSM / NSM ontwerp heeft men meer overlevingskansen gegeven door diverse maatregelen.
- Steelsheid (stealthy) niet alleen door toepassing van radar absorberende materialen en absorberende en deflecterende constructies.
Maar ook door toepassing van meerdere sensoren die alleen passief zijn.    Zoals eerder gezegd, de gegevens uit die verschillende sensoren worden zodanig bewerkt dat de JSM / NSM autonoom in staat is te bepalen welke radar vijandelijk of vriendelijk is; wat de locatie is en vervolgens ingewikkelde manoeuvres kan uitvoeren om deze vijandelijke radars te ontwijken of aan te vallen.
In de terminale fase is de JSM / NSM ook nog eens zeer wendbaar.  Omdat de motorvermogen - gewicht verhouding dan 1 = 1 of hoger is.

Zo te lezen krijgt elke JSM een passieve RF sensor en een ESM ontvanger. In ieder geval geen aparte HARM variant. Waarschijnlijk kan elke JSM hiermee de SEAD taak uitvoeren?
