Duitsland zoekt de samenwerking met Noorwegen rondom het F-127 / vervanging Nansen klasse op. Ik zie de Noren overigens niet zo snel met een 10.000 ton fregat gaan rond varen.

Germany and Norway expand naval partnership on F127 frigate project

To strengthen defense cooperation between Germany and Norway, the two countries have recently broadened their collaboration beyond the joint production of submarines to include the development of future naval projects, particularly the F127 air defense frigate. This expansion of their partnership underscores the strategic significance of Berlin and Oslo's relationship in the defense sector, especially within NATO.

Last September, a contract worth 5.5 billion euros was awarded to ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) for the construction of six U212CD type submarines, divided between the German Navy and the Royal Norwegian Navy. This collaboration extends to crew training and exercise, as well as maintenance and armament, with a jointly developed combat system for the ships.

The cooperation does not end there, as it also encompasses the development of anti-ship missiles within the Super Sonic Strike Missile (3SM) Tyrfing program, led by Kongsberg. Norwegian Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram highlighted Germany as Norway's most important partner in Europe for defense equipment.

Boris Pistorius, Gram's German counterpart, expressed interest in further collaboration during a visit to Norway on March 7. He mentioned potential cooperation on the F127 frigate project, aimed at renewing the German Navy's fleet with six new units. Initiated in 2018 by the German Defense Ministry's planning department, the project initially aimed for cooperation with the Netherlands, although this collaboration appears to be facing challenges.

Norway plans to replace its "Fridtjof Nansen" class frigates with six new ships, potentially opening up for collaboration on the F127 program. According to Hartpunkt, the F127 frigates will be equipped with the American AEGIS system and designed to protect against a wide range of aerial threats while also having anti-submarine and anti-surface capabilities.

General Eirik Kristoffersen, chief of staff of the Norwegian Armed Forces, emphasized the importance of enhancing maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare capabilities, highlighting the strategic interest of future frigates in this area. This focus on anti-submarine capabilities also explains Norway's interest in the Defense and Intervention Frigate (FDI) from France's Naval Group.

Other countries, including the Netherlands, had explored possibilities for cooperation with Germany on the F127 frigate project. The country wished to introduce new ships by 2032 to replace the De Zeven Provinciën class frigates. However, the states ended their collaboration after German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius decided in July 2023 to opt for an Aegis combat system solution for the German Next-Generation Frigate - Air Defense (NGFrig-AD, F127) program.

The proposed solution required the submission of a Foreign Military Sale (FMS) request, which would also apply to selling the frigates to Norway. The F127 project analysis began in 2021 and concluded in February 2023, allowing the program to move to the second phase or to develop options for the defense chief's review. The F127 was initially expected to replace the F124 class starting in 2032, but it now seems likely that this date will be pushed back a few years. Construction is not anticipated to begin before 2026.

The MEKO A400 Air and Missile Defence (AMD) frigate design from ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems was the preferred choice for the hull. With a length of 160 m, a width of 21 m, a depth of 5.5 m, and a displacement of 10,000 tons, the MEKO A400 AMD would be the size of a destroyer. It would be capable of a maximum speed of about 32 knots and have a range of over 4,000 km.

France Is Fitting Paseo XLR EO/IR System On All Its FREMM And Air Defense Destroyers

Faced with the increasing threat posed by kamikaze USV and UAV, the French Navy (Marine Nationale) has issued an "urgent operational requirement" to fit Safran's Paseo XLR advanced electro-optic infra red (EO/IR) system on all FREMM frigates and Horizon type Air Defense destroyers.

In response to the escalating threat posed by kamikaze unmanned surface vehicles (USV) and unmanned air vehicles (UAV), the French Navy has issued an "urgent operational requirement" to fit Safran Electronics and Defense's PASEO XLR extra long-range naval optronic identification & fire control system on all its first rank vessels. The move is a direct "RETEX" (return of experience) of the situation in the Red Sea. The repeated Houthi rebels attacks prompted the swift response to enhance the defense capabilities of the FREMM frigates and Forbin-class destroyers.

The information first surfaced in late February during a media briefing with Alexandre Lahousse, Head of the Industrial Affairs and Economic Intelligence Department (S2IE) at the French defense procurement agency (DGA): "We are going to install electro optic gimbals on our frigates, they will help with detection, identification and adaptation of the response when our ships are facing various threats". Lahousse added this is a direct return of experience from current situation in the Red Sea. "A prototyping was conducted in December on of the frigates now deployed there and the DGA signed a contract in February to equip all frigates." Lahousse concluded, highlighting it took just three months to award the contract to Safran. Lahousse confirmed to Naval News' Nathan Gain that the system in question is the PASEO XLR by Safran Electronics and Defense.

Naval News understands that the first FREMM frigate to receive the PASEO XLR is the first of the air defense variant (FREMM DA) Alsace (D656). The frigate joined the Red Sea in January 2024. Safran fitted the PASEO XLR system over the winter break, between Christmas and New Year, in record time.

Meanwhile, on 9 March 2024, the French air defense frigate destroyed a number of UAVs using its 76mm main gun. This was likely a first as previous engagements by both Languedoc (which hased been deployed on location since the end of November but just came back to her homeport in Toulon) and Alsace involved ASTER missiles. The destruction of the UAVs by gun fire was likely possible (or at least eased) thanks to the PASEO XLR (and the STIR fire control radar fitted on both FREMM DA ships).

Paseo XLR

Specifically designed for operations in extreme naval environments, PASEO XLR comprises a high-performance gyrostabilized platform providing an accurate line of sight, a wide set of imagers with continuous zoom and high-power telescopes, and an eye-safe laser range finder.

PASEO XLR allows manual or automatic sector surveillance, automatic target tracking, visual identification, laser ranging, and transmission or reception of 3D target data. When fitted with its optional ballistic computer, PASEO XLR is able to simultaneously control several guns of different calibers to ensure high-accuracy gun firing.

Integrated into a Combat Management System or operated in a stand-alone mode, PASEO XLR allows manual or automatic sector surveillance, automatic target tracking, visual identification, and transmission or reception of 3D target designation information. PASEO XLR can simultaneously control several guns of different calibers.

Denmark To Seek Frigate Replacement For Thetis-Class
Denmark is looking for a new Frigate design to replace its in-service Thetis-class offshore patrol vessels which routinely patrol waters around Greenland...

In a somewhat dramatic turnaround following last year's announcement by the Danish Ministry of Defence that the Thetis-class offshore patrol vessels would receive a lifetime extension, minister of defence Troels Lund Poulsen has this week declared that a replacement of the four-strong class is needed and that funding for this project should be secured. The statement came during a visit by the minister to Greenland, where he met with Vivian Motzfeldt, the minister responsible for foreign affairs as part of the government of the autonomous Danish territory.

The Thetis-class is approaching forty years of service, and is of particular interest to the autonomous territories of the realm, as they serve a significant part of their times guarding the waters and interests of Greenland and the Faroe Islands. The vessels are worn following decades of service in the North Atlantic, and the urgency of replacing them rose to the forefront in recent weeks as two of the more modern Knud Rasmussen-class Arctic patrol vessels have spent weeks tied up in the port of Nuuk following an undiagnosed issue with the auxiliary machinery aboard. To ensure a naval Danish presence in the Arctic, Triton of the Thetis-class was sent to Greenland, but broke down while enroute to the extent she also had to undergo repairs following her arrival.

To make matters worse, the Thetis-class represent part of Denmark's contribution to NATO's capability targets for the country, which include three vessels corresponding to a so called "Warship Limited"-capability. However, it is clear that the Thetis-class does not in fact meet these requirements, in particular when it comes to sensors, weapons, and combat management systems.

Rear Admiral Hendrik Ryberg, admiral of the Danish Fleet, in an interview with the Danish public broadcaster DR confirms that he sees replacing these vessels as an urgent need, though he also notes that other service branches might have yet more pressing concerns. This refers to the earlier announced 20 billion euros of additional funds to the Danish armed forces as a whole, and discussions currently are underway regarding how to allocate these funds.

So far no details on size, capability, number of vessels, or schedule has been announced. Rear Admiral Ryberg does however state that given the current mission set of the Navy, it is clear that at least "some" more combat-capable surface vessels are required. This, together with the capability target of three "Warship Limited", would indicate that the replacement will indeed be frigates rather than offshore patrol vessels. As such, if the minister of defence gets his wish and the preplacement class is ordered, this represents a significant step up in capability for both the Danish Navy as well as for NATO-forces in the Greenland-Iceland-UK gap during a time of high tensions in the Arctic.

While it is still too early to discuss requirements and concepts, it is noteworthy that the UK Type 31 frigate, which also has seen some export success, is a development of the Danish Iver Huitfeldt-class designed by local company OMT. In addition, an "Arctic Frigate" design was unveiled last year by local company OSK Design. During DSEI 2023, company representatives touted that design as a Thetis-class replacement.

- onderzeeboten
- Patrouille vaartuigen 500 a 1000 ton
