- Alreigh Burke Flight III (USA)
- Sejong the Great (Zuid-Korea)
- MKS-180* (Duitsland)

Is the U.S. Navy Getting Ready to Develop a New 'Battleship'?

.../...

The stealthy nature of the Zumwalt class, whose design reduces the ship's radar signature to that of a small fishing boat, lends itself to operating in enemy waters. Coupled with a large magazine of missiles, the Zumwalt class could become the ideal warship for an aggressive antisurface-ship role. Operating as a lone wolf but fully networked into the U.S. Navy's battle network, a Zumwalt could be sent to hunt down and destroy enemy task forces far and wide.

The conversion would start with deleting the two 155-millimeter Advanced Gun System howitzers on the bow and replacing them with a large field of Mk. 41 vertical launch systems. Each Mk. 41 can hold a single missile, which in this case will be the new Long Range Anti-Ship Missile (LRASM). Removing the guns could free up room for up to two hundred Mk. 41s, resulting in more silo-based firepower than even the Ohio-class guided-missile submarines. The combination of a stealthy ship and stealthy antiship missiles guided by artificial intelligence would make a formidable adversary. Alternately, the two hundred or so silos could be filled with Tactical Tomahawk missiles for a land-attack mission.

A ship-killing Zumwalt would by necessity operate alone, as an escort would be easy for enemy sensors to detect. Fortunately, the combination of the ship's AN/SPY-3 Multi-Function Radar and SM-2 and ESSM missiles makes for a powerful self-defense suite. The Zumwalts' eighty Mk. 57 silos, already installed onboard the ship, would be reserved for defensive weapons.  The eighty silos could provide a layered defense with a combination of medium-range Standard SM-2 air-defense missiles and short-range Evolved Sea Sparrow Missiles (ESSM). If the newer SM-6 surface to air missile fits in the Mk. 57, the secondary antiship role of the SM-6 would give the Zumwalts a backup antiship weapon for use against enemy vessels that don't rate a LRASM.

Advanced Gun System was holding back the Navy's new stealth destroyer  ( Zumwalt als new anti-ship Cruiser ... ?   misschien toch al een stap dichterbij )

Development issues with the Navy's Advanced Gun System, destined to be one of the main armaments of DDG-1000, prompted the Navy to change Zumwalt into a ship killer, the Navy's top requirements officers said Tuesday.

The Navy announced in February in budget justification documents that it intended to integrate Raytheon's SM-6 missile and was changing the mission from a land-attack platform to a ship killer.

In testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee's seapower subcommittee, Vice Adm. Bill Merz told senators that the slow development of the AGS prompted the change.

.../...

Merz said the ship was ready to start its life with the fleet and that the larger MK 57 vertical-launch system canisters will allow for more advanced weapons to be developed and fired from the ship.

"It does have 80 vertical launch cells. Those are the larger variety cell, so that opens up opportunities for advanced development on our weapons side also. Our combat system is very good as are inherent ship capabilities.

The Navy has moved ahead with a plan to add SM-6 on to Zumwalt, which allows the Navy to engage surface targets and extremely long ranges among other missions.

In August, the Navy shot down a medium-range ballistic missile target with the SM-6, which uses a fragmenting explosion near its target as the kill mechanism.

This is different from the SM-3 Block IIA in development that hits its target directly. SM-6 can also be used to hit surface targets at sea and on land from hundreds of miles away.

Beefing up the ship-killing armament even further will be the new and improved maritime version of the Tomahawk, which could be loaded into the MK-57 VLS.

For the Maritime Tomahawk, Raytheon is integrating a new seeker into its tried-and-true strike missile for long-range ship-on-ship engagements. The land-attack version has a range of more than 1,350 nautical miles.

In elk geval bevestigd is de AN/SPY-6 AEGIS radar.

Surface Navy 2019: Commonality demand drove DDG 1000 planar rethink

The planar array technology intended to be installed on Zumwalt-class guided missile destroyers will instead likely be fitted to future US Navy surface combatants, with systems similar to those found on Arleigh Burke-class destroyers now finding a place on the DDG 1000 series' unique superstructure.

Providing updates to the DDG 1000 programme at the Surface Navy Association annual symposium in Washington DC, CAPT Kevin Smith, DDG 1000 programme manager, said that cost and commonality were among the reasons for this move but that it did not breach radar cross section specifications intended for the class.

'The reason we went away from planar array antennas in the integrated deck house was when you have a three-ship class, obviously sustainment is an issue,' Smith explained during a Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) briefing.

Recent images of Zumwalt show the planar arrays are not present.

The programme has suffered from cost overruns and budget pressures, with an original 32 hulls reduced to just three; USS Zumwalt, USS Michael Monsoor and the future USS Lyndon B Johnson.

All three ships are likely to be focused towards the Pacific theatre of operations.

Displacing around 16,000t, the destroyers will be among the largest surface combatants in the world and coming in at over $4 billion per ship they represent a considerable investment by the US Navy.

Smith acknowledged the issues that had been discovered during the transit and initial trials of first in class Zumwalt, but stated that a number of lessons had since been learned meant that progress with Michael Monsoor was going more smoothly.

Meanwhile, the aviation systems required to host an embarked platform will continue to be installed on Zumwalt through 2019, such as signals and lighting, with the aim being the award of certification later in the Q3 timeframe.

The third and final ship in the class, Lyndon B Johnson, was launched at the end of 2018 and is around '80-85% complete', according to Smith.

Interestingly, the class will likely also see the Maritime Strike Tomahawk cruise missile included as part of its missile load-out. A programme of upgrades will see the US and UK navies both receive the maritime strike capability integrated into their existing Tomahawk cruise missile stocks, providing a long-range anti-surface option for any host platform.

Manufacturer Raytheon declined to comment on its Maritime Strike Tomahawk programme.

The shift from littoral operations and gunfire support to blue-water roles is one of the reasons for this expected inclusion.

Smith added that the US Navy was exploring alternatives to its current two-gun configuration, a layout originally intended for gunfire support using enhanced ammunition. The expense and difficulty in developing the capability has led to suggestions that they could be replaced.
