Aangezien je praat over 2 verschillende toestellen met verschillende capaciteiten zie ik hier geen probleem in. De A400M is met name bedoeld om de Transall en Hercules te vervangen. Het is geen directe concurrent van de C-17.

Britain Planning To Buy Boeing Aircraft After Fears of Airbus Delays

Britain's defense ministry is planning to buy three Boeing C17 Globemaster III transport aircraft over fears that delivery of the Airbus 400M will be delayed, The Times reported on Dec. 28.
Citing sources at Boeing, the newspaper said that the British government is in negotiations to purchase the three aircraft, having already bought four C17s that it was leasing from Boeing earlier this year, and committed to buying a fifth early next year.
The three aircraft will cost about $660 million (503 million euros), The Times said.
The Royal Air Force apparently wants the additional C17s both because of concerns over the delivery of the Airbus transport aircraft, and also because it is impressed by the existing Boeing C17s it is operating.
However, the deal depends on the United States continuing to manufacture C17s, which are running out of orders, the newspaper said.
Airbus had promised to deliver the 400M this year, but pushed the delivery date back to 2008, and The Times reported that several analysts believe that the actual date is more likely to be 2009 or 2010, though the company has denied that there will be further delays.

Tja vertragingen en kostenoverschrijdingen zijn er altijd bij dit soort projecten. Of ze nu Europees of Amerikaans zijn...onwenselijk maar blijkbaar hoort het erbij... Gek toch, dat de focus steeds zo op de Europese projecten lijkt te liggen..en daar vaak van die negatieve geluiden en conclusies bij te horen zijn... Terwijl het gewoon heel positief en wenselijk is, dat binnen Europa zoiets als Airbus is ontstaan en bestaat. Anders waren we nu volledig afhankelijk van de Amerikaanse defensie-giganten. Kan me nauwelijks voorstellen dat dit in het strategische belang zou zijn van Europa en de EU-lidstaten...maar goed, het pro-Atlantische gevoel is nog steeds sterk.. helaas...

Airbus Military Says A400M Program on Track

Airbus Military said on Sept. 21 its A400M airlifter program had met its contract "milestones" and the group was giving top priority to fully meeting the seven-nation military project's commitments.
The comments came as Britain inaugurated a wing factory for the future rival to Lockheed Martin's Hercules C130, and came on the same day Airbus Military's sister commercial planemaker unveiled embarrassing new delays to its A380 superjumbo.
Airbus Military has been fighting a rearguard action for months against press speculation of a delay to the 18 billion euro A400M program, which it has always denied.
"To date, all the A400M contract milestones have been met on time and we are giving top priority to continuing to fully meet our program obligations on this exciting and important program in the months and years ahead," Airbus Executive Vice President Programmes Tom Williams said in a statement.

PARIJS (ANP-AFX) - Airbus heeft opnieuw te kampen met vertragingen bij de productie van een van zijn toestellen. Dit keer gaat het om het nieuwe militaire vrachttoestel, de Airbus A400M. De vertraging bedraagt achttien maanden tot mogelijk drie jaar, aldus de Franse krant La Tribune woensdag.
La Tribune schreef dat de vertragingen een 'algemeen bekend' zijn. "De vraag is wanneer Airbus het bekend zal maken", aldus de krant. Het moederbedrijf van de Europese vliegtuigbouwer, EADS, heeft inmiddels ontkennend gereageerd op het nieuws. "Het programma ligt op schema", aldus een woordvoerder van het concern. 
Volgens het oorspronkelijke tijdschema moet de eerste vlucht van de A400M begin 2008 plaatsvinden. Airbus heeft reeds 192 bestellingen voor de A400M binnen. De eerste toestellen moeten vanaf oktober 2009 geleverd worden. Airbus trok ongeveer 6 miljard euro uit voor de ontwikkeling van het toestel. 
Airbus maakte medio juni nog bekend dat de productie van de superjumbo A380 voor de tweede keer vertraging had opgelopen. Daarop moest EADS een winstwaarschuwing afgeven. Het aandeel verloor vervolgens op de beurs meer dan een kwart aan waarde, waardoor 5 miljard euro aan beurswaarde werd weggevaagd. De zaak leidde tot het aftreden van Airbus-topman Gustav Humbert en EADS-medebestuursvoorzitter Noël Forgeard. Forgeard wordt ook verdacht van handel met voorkennis.
