Wat hij niet besefte, is dat de Holland klasse de technologische continuïteit tussen Zeven Provincieen klasse (LCF) en vMFF dient te handhaven.

Ja, maar voor de wapensystemen gold dit niet, en wat "Kapitein Rob" bedoelde, en ik het ben het met eens; het sensoren systeem is 'teveel' voor dit scheepstype en/ of het scheepstype is te ondermaats uitgerust qua bewapening. De SeWaCo is niet 'in evenwicht'.

Is uitgebreid bediscussieerd in het OPV topic; de OPV's waren een politiek excuus, niet een wens van de marine.

2011.   Ring, tringgg.    Allo, Allo ... Franse Marine, hier de DCNS scheepswerf, heden Naval Group.
Op basis van de FREMM scheepsromp-vorm en nog wat andere onderdelen en technologieën van dat FREMM fregat hebben wij zelf een complete lijn van OPV's, korvetten en zelfs (lichte) fregatten opgezet, bedoeld voor de export.
Marine: Bon (goed), maar ehh wat moeten wij daarmee ?
DCNS:  Willen we enige kans maken op de export markt, dan moeten we eerst een succes boeken op de binnenlandse markt.  Buitenlandse klanten zien dan dat dit innovatieve en efficiënte schip werkelijk ook "sea proven" is door de Franse Marine.
Luister, wij lenen een 1.400 - 1.650 tons "Gowind" GPV aan jullie uit voor drie jaar.   Dit OPV is zeer geautomatiseerd, zodoende kunnen jullie ervaring opdoen met deze zeer ver door gevoerde vorm van automatisering.  De L' Adroite kan maximaal 3 weken op zee opereren zonder te bunkeren en kan maximaal 8.000 zeemijlen varen.  En het is op alle zeeën en oceanen inzetbaar.  Terwijl jullie bemanningen ervaring opdoen met deze nieuwe bedrijfsvoering.  Bezoeken jullie als tegenprestatie over heel de wereld potentiële klanten, is ook goed voor het nationale vlagvertoon.  Waarbij de L'Adroite bemanningen om de 4 maanden gewisseld worden.
Een win - win situatie dus.

Belachelijke vormgeving ?
Nou nee.  Het frontale deel van de hoge opbouw deflecteert een zeer groot deel van radar stralen naar boven en opzij.  De opbouw flanken deflecteren de radars stralen naar boven net als bij de Damen SIGMA's.   De motor uitlaat kanalen zijn zeer lang, gaan ook door de opbouw heen.   De uitlaatgassen komen sterk gekoeld uit de uitlaatpijp en indien nodig, worden deze hete gassen gebruikt om de hutten enzovoorts te verwarmen.  Daarnaast geeft deze vormgeving van de opbouw en uitlaat kanalen een minimale nadelige invloed van de uitlaatgassen op heli / UAV operaties, de bemanning en sensoren.
Zodoende is dit schip redelijk Low Observable, is altijd handig voor een marine schip, ja ook voor een OPV.
De Gowind lijn is in tegenstelling tot  de SIGMA lijn niet (grotendeels) volgens civiele standaarden ontworpen en gebouwd.
Maar net als het FREMM fregat juist volgens militaire bouw standaarden.  Kost wat meer muntjes om te bouwen.  Maar een door vijandig toedoen afgeborreld marineschip volgens civiele standaarden kost nog velen malen meer.

Net als de Holland klasse kan dit OPV ook twee 20 voets containers meevoeren, naast een 5 tonner boordheli, die ook in de hangar past.
Er kan ook een 10 - 11 tonner, zoals de NFH-90 op de L'Adroite op landen en opstijgen, maar die past niet in de hangar.
Indien nodig kan de L'Adroite als transport / hulpverlening schip opereren: neemt dan twintig 20 voets containers mee, maar dan gaat er geen heli meer mee.
Onder het heli-dek is plaats voor in te schepen Special Operating Forces en de L'Adroit kan ook (zij het met beperkingen) ingezet worden als mijnenbestrijdingsvaartuig.
Waarbij deze dan fungeert als moederschip voor diverse onbemande en autonome lucht-, oppervlakte-, en onderwater vaartuigjes.

In 2011 was er het plan om twee Holland klasse OPV's voortijdig af te stoten.
Helaas, buitenlandse marines vonden deze veel te duur en zij vonden dat de bedrijfsvoering aan boord van de Holland klasse niet compatible was met die van hen.

Argentina orders OPVs from France

Argentina signed a EUR280 million (USD324 million) contract on 22 June to acquire four offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) from France, an Argentine Navy high-ranking source has told Jane's .

The contract signed by the Navy Material General Directorate (DGMM) and French shipbuilder Naval Group is in accordance with a government-to-government agreement resulting from an international tender, the source said.

The contract includes the ship FS L'Adroit (P725), which was self-funded by Naval Group and has been serving with the French Navy since 2011. Delivery of the ship to Argentina is planned for 2019. Three OPV-87 vessels, which are 87 m long and displace 1,650 tons, are also part of the deal, with two to be delivered in 2021 and one in 2022.

Volgens mij heeft de KM kort gekeken naar een samenwerking maar was dit niet haalbaar / niet wat Nederland zocht.

Het lijkt erop alsof de Italianen dit type zullen bouwen voor de Fransen.
Dat zouden er dan
- vier voor de Marina Militare worden en
- drie exemplaren voor de Marine Nationale. Eventueel een 4de maar niet voor 2029.
De Italianen hebben ondertussen ook de optie voor FREMM 9 en 10 gelicht...

US Navy reveals plans for radical new long range stealth 'supertorpedo'

* The torpedo is used by all U.S. Navy submarines as their anti-submarine warfare

The US Navy is planning a major upgrade to its most commonly used torpedo. Military bosses are hoping to build a new 'advanced capabilities' version of the submarine launched Mk48 with longer range and improved stealth capabilities. This will boost is ability to destroy enemy ships, submarines and small boats, especially in shallow water, they hope.

The new version will be known as the Mk 48 (advanced capability) torpedo, and it is hoped it will feature an array of new technologies including improved sonar, stealth and control systems.
Navy weapons developers are looking for a high-tech, longer range and more lethal submarine-launched heavyweight for use in US submarines.

'The Mk 48 ADCAP (advanced capability) torpedo is a heavyweight acoustic-homing torpedo with sophisticated sonar, all-digital guidance and control systems, digital fusing systems and propulsion improvements,' William Couch, Naval Sea Systems Command spokesman, told Warrior Maven. The new torpedo, which is not expected to enter service until 2024, will feature a radically upgraded guidance and control system allowing it to be fired in shallow and very shallow littoral waters as well as traditional deep-water environments. 

It will also have a new communications system, replacing the existing copper wire communications link with the torpedo with a fibre-optic wire, allowing more data to be sent from the submarine to the torpedo and vice versa, according to Shephard media. The upgrades will allow the torpedo to react far more quickly.  The current version of the torpedo is used by all U.S. Navy submarines as their anti-submarine warfare and anti-surface warfare weapon. The massive torpedoes weigh 3,520 pounds and can destroy targets up to five miles away. It can operate at depths of up to 1,200 feet and fires a 650-pound explosive warhead.

'The MK 48 is propelled by a piston engine with twin, contra-rotating propellers in a pump jet or shrouded configuration. The engine uses a liquid monopropellant fuel,' the Federation of American Scientists analysis states. Operators of the submarine are able to guide the torpedo towards its target as it leaves the launch tube, and uses a thin wire to establish an electronic link between the two.  This helps the torpedo avoid decoys and jamming devices that might be deployed by the target.'The wire is severed and the torpedo's high-powered active/passive sonar guides the torpedo during the final attack,' FAS writes.  The effort to upgrade the Mk 48 comes alongside a larger movement by the military to upgrade its existing arsenal.

Launch of the Italian Navy's New Logistic Support Ship, Vulcano  ( deze heeft wel 4 RAS mogelijkheden ! ...  , dat zou ik bij onze AOR ook graag zien ! )

The launch ceremony of the LSS "Vulcano" logistic support ship unit was held today at the Muggiano site of the Naval Integrated Shipyard.

In the presence of the Minister of Defense, Elisabetta Trenta, welcomed by the Chief of Staff of the Navy, Admiral Valter Girardelli, and the managing director of Fincantieri, Giuseppe Bono, the launch of the logistical support ship (LSS) Vulcano, ordered from Fincantieri as part of Naval Modernisation Plan, took place today.

The Chief of Defense Staff, General Claudio Graziano, the President of Fincantieri, Ambassador Giampiero Massolo, and civil and religious authorities also attended.

In her speech, the (new) Minister of Defense stressed: "we need a naval instrument that ensures constant presence aimed at controlling our waters, the security of our sea lanes, monitoring maritime activities, deterring attacks, fighting illegal activities, international cooperation and training."

The ship's Godmother was Mrs. Maria Teresa Piras, which had played the same role at the launch of Vulcano's main hull section at the Castellammare di Stabia shipyard. She is the widow of the Lt. Emilio Attramini, who died in the Monte Serra incident.

Talking about the new ship, Admiral Girardelli said " Vulcano demonstrates once again the excellence of Italian products and the high professionalism, competence, capability and preparation of our industry."

Vulcano is 192 meters long and will reach a top speed of 20 knots. Her fundamental characteristic is her very high degree of innovation, that makes her extremely flexible in the various mission profiles, and with a high degree of efficiency. In particular, it presents a dual employment profile, combining both typically military missions as well as community support missions such as disaster relief. In addition, it has a low environmental impact, thanks to her advanced auxiliary propulsion systems with low emissions of pollutants (electric motors).

The Chief of Defense Staff, General Graziano, added "Vulcano will play a role in extending the projection capacity of our military instrument, through her characteristics of strategic versatility and operational flexibility, to the advantage of naval training engaged in international operational."

The LSS is a fleet logistic support ship also equipped for health emergencies, thanks to a fully equipped hospital, with operating rooms, X-ray, medical analysis lad, dental surgery, and intensive care ward for up to 17 seriously-ill patients.

The ship is able to combine transport and transfer capacities to other naval units of liquid (diesel, aviation fuel, fresh water) and solid (spare parts, food and ammunition) goods, and to carry out repair and maintenance operations at sea on other vessels.

Defense systems are limited to a command and control capability in tactical scenarios, communications and non-lethal (passive) defense systems. The ship is however able to embark even more complex and capable defense systems, and to become a platform for intelligence-gathering and electronic warfare systems.

$35 billion warship announcement delayed as Cabinet grapples with final project details

A long-awaited announcement on who will build the Navy's next fleet of anti-submarine warships has been delayed as Cabinet debates whether to include a Western Australia-based company in the $35 billion project.

Three foreign defence companies have been shortlisted to design and build Australia's Future Frigates, which are expected to start replacing the ageing Anzac-class warships from the late 2020s.

UK firm BAE Systems is widely favoured to win the lucrative SEA5000 project with its high-tech "Type 26" frigate offering, but is competing against Fincantieri of Italy with its FREMM, and Navantia of Spain with an updated F100.

There is also growing industry speculation that if BAE Systems secures the $35-billion contract Australia would be likely to sign one of the first Free Trade Agreements with the UK after Brexit, and could soon begin to export Bushmaster vehicles to the British Army.

Defence insiders say a Future Frigates announcement was scheduled to be made last week, but a late push to allow West Australian-based shipbuilder Austal to be part of the build has complicated the process.

Last month Austal was cut out from a $3 billion project to construct the Navy's new Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV) after negotiations with the winning German designer Luerssen broke down.



The ABC has been told following Austal's exclusion from the OPV build, West Australian members of Cabinet are particularly keen for the shipbuilder to play a role in the construction of the nine Future Frigates, which will all be assembled in Adelaide.

Defence Industry Minister Christopher Pyne would not be drawn on whether a role for Austal was being considered, but hinted a final decision on the Frigates project could still be a few weeks away.

"The Government has said that we will make an announcement about the successful tenderer in mid this year which is June and July," Mr Pyne said.

"We will definitely do that.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, the most senior West Australian figure in Cabinet, said it would be inappropriate to comment on "an issue that is pursuant to a tender" but added "we certainly support the WA shipbuilding industry, we support Austal ships and we want to see more jobs in shipbuilding across Australia".

However, the deputy Liberal leader declined to say if she had made any specific representations to her Cabinet colleagues for Austal to be included in the Future Frigates program.

"We continually make representations as West Australian Liberal members and senators to support West Australian business and more jobs in Western Australia, and we're delighted that the Federal Government has rolled out such a significant shipbuilding program across Australia and that there will be many more jobs in shipbuilding as a result of the Turnbull Government's policies," she said.

The ABC asked Austal whether it was also lobbying the Federal Government to be allowed to take part in the construction of the new frigates, but the company declined to comment.

Navy to get additional missile-armed frigates

Aside from the two missile-armed frigates now undergoing construction at Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea, the Philippine Navy (PN) will be getting additional ships of the same class, Defense spokesperson Arsenio Andolong said Wednesday.

Acquisition for these additional frigates will start during Horizon Two of the Revised Armed Forces of the Philippines Modernization Program (RAFPMP), which is scheduled for 2018 to 2022 and has a budget of roughly PHP300 billion.

"In the PN, you will find this interesting. Aside from the two frigates that are currently being constructed, kukuha pa tayo ng additional (frigates)," Andolong said.

He, however, acknowledged that he has no idea how much money would be provided for the acquisition of these additional frigates.

"Yun ang hindi ko pa alam, dahil siyempre iba-budget, ia-apportion pa yung PHP300 billion (That is what I do not know yet. It's because there will be a budget allocation. The PHP300 billion will be apportioned)," he stressed.

The two frigates being built by Hyundai Heavy Industries has a contract of PHP18 billion, including its weapon systems and munitions.

Ach met slechts een kleine 300 miljoen euro voor 2 schepen zal het geen bijzonder schip zijn, gebouwd in Zuid-Korea. De afbeelding is anders dan het werkelijke schip, de sensoren van Thales zijn uiteindelijk niet gekozen maar men koos voor een Koreaans pakket.  Thales was niet goed genoeg vond men in Manilla
