Technological developments in the field of naval mine countermeasures (MCM) are revolutionising a traditionally dangerous, difficult and time-consuming process. Advances in areas such as networking, autonomy and wider aspects of artificial intelligence are speeding the detection, identification, classification and disposal of mines. Significantly, they also offer the prospect of 'taking the ship out of the minefield'. One common question posed to fleets worldwide is how best to deploy this new technology. Thales E-POC: Expeditionary MCM Solution For The French Navy  (    wordt dit ook gebruik bij de BE/NL MCM ? )

The French defence procurement agency (DGA) placed an order with Thales, via the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAr), for the provision of an Expeditionary Portable Operations Centre (e-POC) to meet the French Navy's new requirement for a drone-based mine countermeasures capability.

The system was developed in less than six months and has been accepted by the DGA and OCCAr after completing sea trials and delivered to the French Navy. The e-POC demonstrator enables naval forces to conduct mine countermeasures missions quickly and efficiently using only unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs).

Thales's e-POC demonstrator is an easily transportable solution that will ultimately enable the French Navy to deploy underwater drones for mine countermeasures missions in any theatre of operations. It will provide a flexible mission management capability from outside the zone of operations, helping to keep naval personnel out of harm's way. The e-POC demonstrator runs software developed for the M-Cube and MiMap systems on a single computer equipped with three control screens to plan, execute and analyse missions requiring the simultaneous deployment of up to three UUVs. The system can be set up on board a ship or at a shore station, and is small enough to fit into just six transport cases for deployment into the theatre of operations. The transport cases are stowed inside the UUV container to streamline logistics and boost mission effectiveness.

Thales e-POC comes in a small form-factor (akin to a large laptop with 3 screens) that is easily transportable. It will allow naval operators to control up to three mine warfare drones. Naval News learned that the French Navy mine warfare flotilla plans to use e-POC from RHIBs. Naval News saw e-POC for the first time at Sea Air Space 2023.


Thales e-POC is a portable solution which can run the company's M-Cube and MiMap softwares.

The hardware for e-POC is supplied by US company ACME Portable Machines, Inc. and is known as the "NotePAC III Pro V". A company representative confirmed this information to Naval News at WEST 2024 in San Diego.

Iedereen kon je op voorhand vertellen dat je een MCMV wel voor een dergelijke prijs kon ontwikkelen maar een degelijk fregat niet. Ik betwijfel al of je er een goed korvet uit kan slepen voor die prijs. De enige reden waarom die onzinnige prijs is genoemd is om beide landen in economisch slechte tijden mee te krijgen en daarna de aloude truc toe te passen: "Oeps, sorry, onvoorziene kosten, maar blijkt dat wapens geld kosten!". Het hebben van capabele ASW fregatten is belangrijker dan binnen budget blijven.

Beetje vreemd hoe dát gelopen is, met MCMV en ASWF die evenwaardige contracten moesten zijn en dat het toen plots niet meer lukte om een fregat te bouwen voor 600 miljoen waardoor het allemaal flink wat vertraging heeft opgelopen.
