Boeing Delivers 100th P-8A Poseidon Built for the U.S. Navy

SEATTLE, May 14, 2020 — The U.S. Navy received its 100th P-8A aircraft from Boeing [NYSE: BA] today as the global fleet, which also includes the Indian navy and the Australian and U.K. air forces, approaches 300,000 flight hours of hunting submarines and providing aerial reconnaissance capabilities around the world.

"We're honored by the Navy's faith and confidence in our employees and the P-8 system," said Stu Voboril, vice president and program manager. "Our focus has been, and will be, on delivering the world's best maritime patrol aircraft, bar none."

The P-8 is a proven long-range multi-mission maritime patrol aircraft capable of broad-area, maritime and coastal operations. A military derivative of the Boeing 737 Next-Generation airplane, the P-8 combines superior performance and reliability with an advanced mission system that ensures maximum interoperability in the battle space.

This is the 94th mission-capable airplane to enter the U.S. Navy fleet, with six additional jets used as Engineering Manufacturing Development test aircraft. The 100th fully-operational delivery is scheduled for later this year. Boeing has also delivered 12 jets to the Royal Australian Air Force, two to the U.K.'s Royal Air Force and eight P-8Is to the Indian Navy. Multiple U.S. Navy squadrons have deployed with the P-8A Poseidon, and the Indian Navy and Royal Australian Air Force are conducting missions with the P-8 as well.

RAF Declare Poseidon an Initial Operating Capability

03 Apr 2020

The RAF has formally declared an Initial Operating Capability (IOC) of its brand-new Poseidon MRA Mk1 Maritime Patrol Aircraft.  The UK's Poseidon fleet, currently comprising of two aircraft with seven more to be delivered, strengthens our maritime security, helping to protect our people and our interests, at home and overseas.

Poseidon will now be patrolling our seas, hunting potentially hostile submarines and helping to defend our nuclear deterrent. It uses the very latest in cutting-edge technology to detect, identify and monitor hostile contacts both above and below the waves. It can carry up to 129 sonobuoys to search for enemy submarines and can be armed with Mk54 torpedoes if required to attack enemy submarines.

Air Marshal Andy Turner, Deputy Commander Capability said:

'I am absolutely delighted that the Poseidon Force has met its first operational milestone on time. It is a crucial aircraft for the security of the UK, critical to Allies and NATO and a major weapon to press back on our adversaries all over the World.'

Air Marshal Andy Turner
Deputy Commander Capability

Air Commodore Richard Barrow, Poseidon Senior Responsible Owner said:

"We've just declared an initial operating capability for our Poseidon aircraft, on time on 1st April 2020. It's a really exciting time for us in this programme, which is moving fast and the team at RAF Lossiemouth has delivered some great results in very quick time. We've still got a long way to go with introducing this next generation capability into Service, but Poseidon is a game-changer, not just for hunting submarines but for a range of other roles from anti-ship warfare, maritime reconnaissance and long-range search and rescue tasks."

Our Poseidon aircraft are operated by 54 Squadron and 120 Squadron, who are currently flying from Kinloss Airfield in Moray, Scotland. Poseidon will move to its permanent home at RAF Lossiemouth later this year once the refurbishment work on the runways and airfield infrastructure has been completed, including the new Strategic Facility which is being delivered by Defence Equipment and Support. Our second Poseidon squadron, Number 201 Squadron, will also stand up later this year.

The Poseidon is an established and proven capability with the aircraft already in service and operated by the US Navy and the Royal Australian Air Force. The Royal Norwegian Air Force and Royal New Zealand Air Force have also decided to buy the Boeing P-8A Poseidon. We are looking forward to working closely with our Poseidon allies in the future as we introduce our new aircraft into service.

Boeing wins $1.5bn contract for 18 P-8A patrol aircraft for South Korea, New Zealand and US Navy

The US Navy (USN) has awarded Boeing a $1.5 billion contract for 18 P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft.

The deal is for six aircraft for the South Korean navy, four aircraft for the Royal New Zealand Air Force and eight aircraft for the USN, Boeing says on 30 March. New Zealand and South Korea are scheduled to received their first aircraft in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

A ship and submarine hunting maritime patrol aircraft, the P-8 is based on the commercial 737-800. However, the jet's airframe has been ruggedized, a bomb bay has been installed to drop torpedoes and its wings have pylons for weapons such as Harpoon anti-ship missiles. The aircraft can also carry up to 129 sonobuoys.

The aircraft is primarily operated by the USN, which plans to order 117 examples in total to replace its aging fleet of Lockheed P-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft.

Other operators include the UK, Australia, India and Norway.

In January 2020, the USN said in a request for information that it is interested in expanding the capabilities of the P-8A to include the ability to carry new anti-ship cruise missiles, bombs, sea mines and decoys. Boeing told FlightGlobal at the Singapore air show that the new capabilities could increase the aircraft's international sales potential.

Dat is niet moeilijk voor Dornier.

Je neemt als Basis de Do 24 ATT dat is een gemodificeerde Do 24 die de MLD heeft gehad.

Do 24 ATT
The Do 24 AT appears to be built using old-fashioned craftsmanship but it is also very futuristic. On the one hand it has a textile- strung rudder and on the other, completely newly developed wings. These details alone prove that the Dornier Do 24 ATT is one of the most outstanding aircrafts in the world.

The 3-engined flying boat was built in 1944 and is today the only flying example of it's type. Until 1971, it was used as sea- rescue aircraft in Spain. In 1983 it was equipped with new engines and newly developed trapeze-shaped wings, as well as a landing gear which makes it an amphibian technology bearer (Amphibischer Technologie Träger ATT). Then it was put on display in a museum and freed from there after 10 years by Iren Dornier (grandson of the legendary aircraft constructor Claude Dornier). The Do 24 ATT was extensively restored for the second time and made flyable. It started on a round the world trip with Iren Dornier as pilot.
