TANKS NO THANKS New tanks which cost army staggering £5.5billion have trials halted after troops fall sick and damage hearing

NEW tanks which cost the Army £5.5billion were grounded after making troops sick and damaging their hearing.

Crews suffered nausea, swollen joints and tinnitus from the din and vibrations inside the Ajax armoured vehicles.

Trials were halted for the four months to March and test crews are now limited to 105 minutes inside, a source said.

All soldiers who has been in one must have a hearing test.

Only 14 of the 589 vehicles have so far been delivered. They are the Aries variant which has no turret.

Suspension troubles mean turrets on the others cannot fire when the tank is moving. The tanks are being made in Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales.

The ordered — the biggest for armoured vehicles in more than 20 years — was made with General Dynamics.

An Army source said: "It's a complete shambles.

"The entire fleet has been out of action because of problems with the suspension and noise issues.

"Soldiers who ride in the Ajax complain their hearing has been affected. Taxpayers' money is being wasted on this scheme which isn't working."

Kan het niet helpen, maar telkens zie ik een achterspoiler (alsof de Lynx KF41 extra downforce nodig heeft)  ;D

Waar gaat al dat geld dan naartoe??

https://committees.parliament.uk/publications/5081/documents/50325/default/

Conclusies en aanbevelingen : Pagina 54/55 punt 11 - 12 -13 behandelt AJAX :

11. The first vehicles were originally due to be delivered to the British Army in April
2017, however this was delayed. In May 2020 it emerged that the delivery of the
first batch of Ajax vehicles was to be delayed further as they were found not to
be ready to be accepted into service. It is not exactly clear what caused this delay
but, in its evidence to the inquiry GDLSUK stated that delays had occurred in
agreeing requirements and challenges with the integration of the 40mm weapon
system mandated by the Ministry of Defence - similar to the issue on the Warrior
programme. (Paragraph 50)

12. The Ajax programme, which is now also seriously delayed, is yet another example
of chronic mismanagement by the Ministry of Defence and its shaky procurement
apparatus. This is particularly worrying, as Ajax is fundamental to the establishment
and deployment of the Army's new Strike Brigades, which are intended to be a keypart
of its future order of battle. As the Ministry materially contributed to delays to
both Warrior and Ajax—by insisting on a complex, new generation 40mm cannon,
when other tried and tested alternatives were available—they should now publicly
justify why this decision was taken and by whom in Main Building, on the Army Board
or at DE & S and what urgent action is now being taken, to mitigate its obviously
deleterious effect. (Paragraph 51)

13. We note that difficulties with the Ajax programme have again arisen in part as a
consequence of the Army's desire to develop a bespoke vehicle capability (albeit
one based on an existing but modified ASCOD 2 hull), with a plethora of complex
requirements, and the need to integrate a novel weapon system technology.
We welcome the assurances from General Dynamics Land Systems UK that
the challenges facing the Ajax programme have been largely resolved and look
forward to these new advanced vehicles being delivered to frontline units as soon
as possible. The Ministry of Defence must ensure that there are no further delays
to this expensive programme. We also note that there may be potential synergies
between Ajax and a revised requirement for an armoured infantry fighting vehicle.
The Ministry of Defence must ensure that there are no further delays to this expensive
programme. We also note that there may be potential synergies between Ajax and
a revised requirement for an armoured infantry fighting vehicle. In the event that
the Warrior Capability Sustainment Programme does not proceed the Army should
explain how that Infantry Fighting Vehicle role would be fulfilled and if a further
AJAX variant may be a potential candidate, with the associated benefits of in-service
support. (Paragraph 54)

Er was nog een project waar vermelding van werd gemaakt waarbij er rond de 1.5 miljard was uitgegeven en het enige wat was gebeurd waren een paar schiettesten op staal.  :dead:

Data drop from the MoD: Ajax Scout has now cost the UK £3.47bn, and not a single workable vehicle is in service, and there is little sign that this will happen.

Yes, that's right: £3.47bn with nothing to show for it, and little sign that there will be any result any time soon. Over the past 3 budget years, £1.73bn has been spent, at a time when, it is pretty obvious, that the programme has been in deep doo-doo

Penny wise and Pound foolish.

Active protection system for Lynx IFV

18 May 2021

Market breakthrough for Rheinmetall's new StrikeShield — €140 million order from Hungary

The 209 new Lynx infantry fighting vehicles recently ordered by Hungary from Rheinmetall of Germany will be equipped with Rheinmetall's StrikeShield hard-kill active protection system, or APS. Hungary is the latest customer for this innovative technology, which has formed part of the Rheinmetall portfolio since 2006. It will be supplied by Rheinmetall Protection Systems GmbH. The order is worth over €140 million. Hungary's decision in favour of StrikeShield was driven by the NATO member's commitment to taking part in demanding missions where modern anti-tank weapon systems present a dangerous threat to own forces.

StrikeShield is the third and latest generation of Rheinmetall's acclaimed Active Defence System (ADS) technology, a specific variant of hard-kill APS. It is a distributed system whose sensors and countermeasures are integrated into the contours of the entire vehicle. Among other benefits, StrikeShield has the lowest emissions in the electro¬magnetic spectrum on the market, as well as the fastest reaction time in ambush and multi-hit situations. It protects the vehicle from shaped charge warhead threats such as rockets or missiles by neutralizing incoming projectiles before they hit the platform itself.

The StrikeShield APS will be mechanically integrated into hybrid armour tiles on the Lynx. Instead of conventional passive add-on armour modules, the platform will feature spaced passive armour tiles that incorporate the components of the APS between an outer ply and inner tiles mounted on the vehicle's hull.

"We see huge benefits from hybrid designs", declares Dr Manfred Salk, CEO of

Rheinmetall Protection Systems GmbH. "The effects that passive armour protects you from are standardized and well understood. Hybrid designs are different. They allow us to do a much better job of dealing with new effects and threats, such as residual energy from a disabled rocket hitting the vehicle and deflagrating. The combination of our passive and active technologies into hybrid systems therefore offer our customers unique benefits with regard to the protection capability, but also weight- and cost-efficiency."

Rheinmetall Protection Systems GmbH is Rheinmetall's center of excellence in survivability technologies, formed in 2019. Core of the product strategy is the hybridization of armor solutions, which provide the outlook to lighter and sensor based survivability solutions for armored platforms.

DGA conducts first firing of MMP from Jaguar EBRC
by Robin Hughes

The Direction Générale de l'Armement (DGA – the French Procurement Agency), in association with MBDA and Nexter, has conducted the first lock-on-before launch (LOBL) firing of a Missile Moyenne Portée (MMP) land combat missile from a Jaguar EBRC (Engin Blindé de Reconnaissance et de Combat) 6×6 armoured reconnaissance vehicle.

Conducted on 14 April at DGA's Land Techniques test centre in Bourges, central France, but disclosed by MBDA on 10 May, the MMP launch from the retractable pod on the Jaguar's turret against a static target was part of qualification of the Jaguar EBRC platform for the French Army. MBDA said 'the integration of MMP onto Jaguar is being carried out in stages during the qualification', and that the successful engagement of a static target marked the first stage of the integration roadmap.

An MMP medium-range land combat missile is launched from the Jaguar two-person turret in the first firing of the weapon system from the Jaguar EBRC platform at the DGA Techniques Terrestres Test Centre in Bourges on 14 April. (MBDA)

Developed by a consortium of Nexter Systems, Arquus, and Thales, the Jaguar EBRC, along with the Griffon 6×6 VBMR (Véhicule Blindé Multirôles) multirole armoured vehicle, and the 4×4 Serval lightweight multirole armoured vehicle (Véhicule Blindé Multirôles léger), will replace the 6×6 AMX10 RC, 6×6 ERC90, and 4×4 VAB (Véhicule de l'Avant Blindé) HOT armoured platforms as part of the Engin Blindé Multirôles (EBMR – multirole armoured vehicles) segment of the French Army's SCORPION modernisation programme. The MMP weapon system will be integrated with the SICS (Système d'Information du Combat SCORPION) battle management system on both the Jaguar and Griffon platforms.

USMC weighing ARV bids for prototyping competition

04 MAY 2021

by Ashley Roque

Industry bids for the US Marine Corps' (USMC's) advanced reconnaissance vehicle (ARV) prototyping competition were due on 3 May and at least two companies said they are vying for contracts.

Both General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS) and Textron Systems announced that they had responded to the service's request for prototype proposals: a document only available to National Advanced Mobility Consortium members.

In a 2020 draft publicly released, the service said it intends to award up to four contracts for this upcoming prototyping phase that will end with an evaluation.

"The ARV prototype vehicle (PV) is envisioned as a next-generation platform with a combination of capabilities that will enable light armoured reconnaissance (LAR) battalions to function as a battlefield manager," the US Army wrote on behalf of the USMC effort last year. "This will require multiple and resilient means to process information and communicate," it added.

The prototypes will need to have an "open system architecture" and strike the right balance between the demands to "sense, shoot, move, communicate and remain transportable" as part of the naval expeditionary force.

"The ARV PV will provide a balanced set of performance, payload, and protection attributes with sufficient size, weight, and power (SWaP) to accommodate future growth and the development of other platform variants," the notice added.

David Phillips, Textron Systems' senior vice-president for land systems, provided reporters with some additional ARV requirement details during a 3 May call. He noted that the USMC wants the prototypes to weigh less than 8.5 tons, there are likely to be different variants, and that four vehicle should fit onto each ship-to-shore connector.
