Incredible Ghost boat is perfect Bond villain runabout

Aug 22, 2014

It looks like a half-submerged X-Wing, or maybe a Star Trek Shuttle, but it's actually Ghost, one American start-up's vision for what an attack helicopter designed for the navy might look like. Mustering 4,000 HP from two engines on the end of powered legs, Ghost promises to whip across the ocean in a supercavitation bubble, avoiding radar and with a silky smooth ride for the crew inside.

What makes the boat special is how it improves on hydroplane technology, more commonly used in racing boats. Hydroplanes increase their top speed by skimming across the top of the water, rather than burying their hulls in it, reducing drag in the process.

However, that also makes them relatively unstable and prone to flipping - so, Ghost's manufacturer Juliet Marine Systems turned to supercavitation, which creates a bubble of gas around each of the legs and cuts drag by a factor of 900. Air is pulled down through the struts, while the propellers are at the front of the 62 foot long tubes, effectively pulling the vessel along.

Unsurprisingly it took a few years to get the system working, and during that time the US Office of Naval Research wasn't especially impressed, Bloomberg Businessweek reports. Meanwhile, a potential DARPA grant fell through because it would've required exclusive access to Juliet Marine's patents; instead, company founder Gregory Sancoff wants to license the technology more broadly.

The goal is still to sell Ghost to the Navy for around $10m per boat, each capable of transporting sixteen people plus boat crew through 10 foot seas and higher without spilling their drinks (or the contents of their stomachs).

Sancoff argues that Ghost can do something no other current Navy vessel can: act as a bodyguard to other, slower ships, as well as sit stealthily near troubled areas and monitor foreign troop movements, tap electronic communications, and more.

Unfortunately, looking cool isn't one of the factors that necessarily convinces the US Navy to invest in a vessel. Back in 2012, for instance, Sea Shadow - the stealth boat that inspired James Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies - was auctioned off for $3.2m, though with the proviso that the distinctive (but slippery-to-radar) craft be broken down for scrap by whoever bought it.

Juliet Marine Systems/GHOST

Juliet Marine Systems is a maritime technology think tank that is developing innovative solutions for naval and commercial applications. We seek to assure fleet force protection in response to small vessel terrorist attacks against our Navy and coalition ships. There is a clear and present danger of these tactics being used against the U.S. Navy throughout the world and in our home ports. These same innovative technologies, applied to commercial needs, will provide a significant decrease in transit time and increase in energy efficiency, resulting in the savings of thousands of gallons of fuel daily.

Our Navy is in a revolutionary period of change. Historic military tactics combined with modern materials and technology present a formidable fleet protection challenge for our Navy today. One of the greatest threats to our Navy is low tech vessel attacks with conventional explosives, as seen on October 12, 2000, when the USS Cole was attacked, killing 17 sailors and wounding 39 others and in the continued success of pirates. As a maritime systems think tank, Juliet Marine Systems provides offensive, defensive and ISR solutions that are developed in a skunk works operation able to rapidly invent and construct needed technologies and systems for the Navy and armed forces. We have already developed a surface variant of a super cavitating craft and are planning to apply our unique technology in a UUV prototype.

While the GHOST is a surface vessel, the hydrodynamics of the twin submerged buoyant tubular foils are also a test bed for Juliet Marine's next planned prototype, a long duration UUV. The GHOST is a revolutionary proprietary technology vessel platform that will assure force protection through stealth fighter/attack capabilities along with integrated situation awareness. These vessels would create a protective fleet perimeter, providing sensor and weapons platforms, allowing no surface or subsurface intrusions.

The GHOST is a combination of stealth fighter aircraft and attack helicopter technologies packaged in a marine platform. The awesome capabilities of GHOST are designed to provide a marine surface and subsurface platform for tracking and identification of multiple targets. Systems for integrating on-board weapons will be designed to be capable of multi-target firing solutions while GHOST operates at very high speed. These weapons integration systems will also allow for attacking several targets simultaneously with a variety of weapons systems options.

The same capabilities that have made helicopters valuable to get to hard to reach locations fast, will apply to the GHOST in commercial applications in the maritime environment. Crew rotations or resupply runs for critical items to off-shore oil rigs can be accomplished two to three times faster than the craft currently in use and would be far less expensive and have fewer weather restrictions than using helicopter assets. The GHOST is two to three times as fast as most ferries in use today.

Juliet Marine Systems, Inc. Announces Anti-piracy
Sea-based Security Platform, GHOST

PORTSMOUTH, NH (March 9, 2011) - Juliet Marine Systems, Inc. announced today that they have developed
and built a revolutionary marine platform called GHOST specifically designed to deal with international problems
of piracy.
International piracy has been consistently growing. In Somalia alone, pirates today hold 33 hijacked ships and 711
hostages, according to ICC IMB figures. Piracy is growing at about 10% per year and the heaviest activity is
centered in Somalia. Juliet Marine's President and CEO Gregory Sancoff stated, "The piracy problem is not going
away, the pirates are becoming more sophisticated. With the success of each hijacking, there is more money
available to pirates through payment of ransoms to purchase better equipment, larger ships, and better weapons."
A clear example of this is also seen in the continuing geographical expansion of pirate attacks further offshore. In
2005, pirates were within 170 nautical miles (nm) of their land bases and today they are over 1,000 nm from
shore.
Juliet Marine Systems has developed a completely new class of vessel that has been compared by many
working in the US Navy to an attack helicopter on the water. It has the ability to conduct long range security
patrols at very high speeds and to loiter for several days. GHOST can utilize non-lethal or lethal weapons
depending on situational requirements.
GHOST is specifically designed to be sea-based in squadrons from a larger ship that would act as home base for
the security patrols and could be placed offshore close to the area of operations. Gregory Sancoff states, "Seabasing
is the best means for conducting pirate patrols. If GHOST is land-based, this would present a host of
international treaty issues and additional security needs."
Juliet Marine Systems is discussing with the shipping industry the use of GHOST boats to provide private security
patrols for their ships and insurance customers. Smaller boat owners wishing to navigate close to areas of concern
would also be able to contract for security for their transit. Sancoff says, "This service, made possible by GHOST
technology, could prevent tragedies such as the recent Quest hijacking, that resulted in the killing of four
Americans, and the hijacking of the Maersk Alabama, which also could have ended with American fatalities."
Juliet Marine Systems believes the best way to tackle the implementation of private pirate security patrols in the
near future is for the many governments involved in this initiative to support sea-based security patrols. Sancoff
says "America should not be stuck paying the bill for international piracy security, it's not all America's problem
but rather an international problem that affects many countries."
Juliet Marine Systems is seeking government support to seed this effort through the US State Department and the
US Navy. GHOST must comply with ITAR and export regulations.
