French Navy to start testing new aircraft carrier by 2036

POSTED ON TUESDAY, 19 MAY 2020 14:32

The French Defense Ministry has announced that a new generation aircraft carrier, to be built in Saint-Nazaire, will begin sea trials in 2036.

The new generation aircraft carrier intended to replace the Charles de Gaulle will be built at the Atlantic Shipyards and launched for the first tests in 2036, French Defense Minister Florence Parly announced on Monday, May 18. The nuclear aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle will reach the end of its service life in 2038-2040.

The characteristics of the future successor to the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier have not yet been defined. "Let's not limit our horizon or our imagination. We must not re-do the identical but seek the most ingenious, the most useful and the most effective capacities. Let us make this aircraft carrier a real forward base for our navy", asked Minister Florence Parly at the last Euronaval exhibition. It nevertheless seems accepted that this future aircraft carrier could be more imposing than the current Charles-de-Gaulle.

A distinction must be made between propulsion systems and the energy source that powers them (conventional or nuclear). Indeed, the propulsion system of an aircraft carrier fulfills several missions. It is used to:
- ensuring the mobility of the building, by supplying the turbines with energy in order to actuate the propellers;
- supply the aircraft carrier's electricity;
- allow the operation of catapults, in order to operate the aircraft of the air group;
- supply the crew with fresh water.
Propulsion - nuclear or conventional - is, therefore, an essential element in the life of the building and its ability to fulfill its missions.

It is much likely that the future aircraft carrier will be more powerfully armed than the Charles-de-Gaulle and will have electromagnetic catapults making it possible to launch planes carrying more ammunition and / or fuel, to increase the pace of operations. This choice leads us to think that the propulsion will be nuclear, given that the New Generation Fighter [NGF] – the combat aircraft at the center of the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) – will be considerably heavier than the Rafale M and that it will also be necessary to plan the installations necessary for drone operations. And there is also the need for the ability to simultaneously "launch and pick up" aircraft, to provide more flexibility for flight operations.

In general, the logic behind the ship's specifications - one should rather say "weapon system" - will be more to determine the capabilities necessary to conduct the planned war missions, taking into account the enemy's defenses.

The question of the number of aircraft carriers to replace the Charles-de-Gaulle will quickly arise: in order to maintain a minimum permanence of the air and naval capacities, it would be necessary at least two. Affordable?

It was during a preparatory press conference at Euronaval 2018 that the first SN3G sketch was officially presented for the very first time. Navy Recognition  told the general public this exclusivity. However, it is a question of putting back the silhouette of the future SNLE (Nuclear Submarine Launcher of Engines) in its context: it appeared on a plate (cf infra ) presenting the whole range of Naval group: which this aircraft carrier that is not the Charles de Gaulle ... Is this the synthesis of work on the (NPA) New Carrier-Aircraft?

The architectural choices that are represented are relatively close, namely an island placed at the front with two side elevators giving direct access to the aeronautical hangar (s) for what is visible. The flight deck can be seen, corbels seem similar at first glance.

But it is not the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle since, from the bow to the stern, it is visible that the bow does not have a nice curved line from the flotation to the flight deck but a broken line almost at the height of the bottom of the corbels. The island is definitely not the one of the PAN because it is truncated of its posts in the front and the back, is much more massive and high, besides an unknown mast. There does not seem to be a chimney. Equipment after the first elevator (the one in the immediate vicinity of the island) seems to be a second crane. Curiously, this silhouette is presented at the level of the waterline when all the others present the whole hull.

If it was conceivable that this silhouette presents an island completely remelted, rebuilt or even replaced for the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle during the ATM (Major Technical Stop) No. 3 in 2025, the shape of the hull seems to condemn this hypothesis. The distance between the two lifts and doors of the hangar or hangars seems more important than on the current aircraft carrier.

This silhouette of aircraft carrier therefore presents architectural choices very similar, if not the same, as those of the PA75. It would be distinguished by a longer hull: in the middle between the two lifts and even in the front. It looks like we were heading for a hull longer than the 261.5 meters of the last three aircraft carriers. The NPA would then have a more imposing master-builder than that of the Richelieu-type battleships, so that several basins should be enlarged in width. As a reminder, the achievement of the so-called "CATAPO" capacity on the PANs would have obliged to add 20 meters of hull in front of the island for a quote of 3000 tons.

The island is of a near-breaking design since it is very asserted forward, almost in a point between what is supposed to be the footbridges without being as tapered backwards as the DEAC (DCNS Evolved Aircraft Carrier ) or cubic as on the Charles de Gaulle. It ends with a sort of fairing potentially containing a certain number of sensors, most likely a flat-face radar, since no airspace similar to an air-defense radar is clearly visible. The capacity evolution in this area was difficult to circumvent. Round masks enclosing the antennas of the Syracuse military telecommunication system are not visible, unless it is this round appendix at the top of the island. Moreover, the mast of this last is intriguing because the logic of these masts escapes at the first glance and does not seem coherent with the discrete aspect, if it is stealthy of the whole by integration of the sensors.

Finally, the most surprising is the desire to show nothing below the waterline! No unconventional approach has been mentioned for the moment. The modes of propulsion in pods have been discarded for the moment because it would be a question of leaving "during" organs by nature and noisy destination. Should we expect some major changes in propulsion whether in pods or via tree lines? Ships called all electric or even electromagnetic leave rather wait for evolutions on the internal architecture. Any advance on the propellers, even a pump-jet propellant ?

There is strong suspicion that neither the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle nor the DEAC but a new aircraft carrier.

France starts study phase for new aircraft carrier

The French defense ministry will launch a study phase to look into the replacement of the French Navy's sole aircraft carrier FS Charles de Gaulle, defense minister Florence Parly announced October 23 at the Euronaval conference.

.../...

Florence Parly also indicated that, depending on the outcome of the study phase, building more than one successor carrier was not excluded.

The successor aircraft carrier will be expected to remain operational beyond 2080.
