CitaatCV90 with the RT60 remote turret looks instinctively right. A lack of turret intrusion into the crew compartment maximises interior space. With cannon ammunition isolated from the crew, it maximises the platform's survivability.

Krauss-Maffei Wegmann: increasing the group industrial base and designing a new IFV

....../......

A new tracked infantry fighting vehicle

Although not much is said on that subject at the KMW HQ, a new product is in full development; considering the number of Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFVs) that have to be replaced in the coming years in Europe and worldwide, the company has launched a programme aimed at a new IFV based on innovative concepts. EDR On-Line understood that the secrecy around the project is mostly due to the fact that a key element in the programme is its openness towards collaborations with foreign parties in order to ease customers nations industries participation. At least two nations in Europe are seeking a new IFV. One of them is Italy, which in December 2020 organised an industry day on "A new generation armoured combat infantry system for infantry". Beside typical considerations, the service stressed the importance of modularity, the mission module concept being a key issue, as well as unmanned systems integration, multinational cooperation and growth potential. Currently equipped with the Dardo in the combat and antitank versions, no further specialised versions were acquired although prototypes were developed, the Italian Army wants to provide its mechanised infantry battalions with a family of vehicles based on the same chassis, combat, antitank, mortar-carrier, command post, engineer, SHORAD, medical evacuation, recovery and ammunition carrier versions being part of the requirement. Some of the versions, i.e. the engineer, SHORAD and ammunition carrier, will be provided to combat support (artillery, engineers) and combat service support units part of the two heavy brigades, the "Ariete" armoured and the "Garibaldi" mechanised.

What EDR On-Line understood in the talks in Munich is that KMW aims at a fully open architecture, modularity being not only aimed at mission modules rapid replacement, something the company has learned well with the Boxer programme. The experience acquired with the Boxer programme, as well as that obtained with the German Puma IFV programme, the two systems being developed respectively as part of the ARTEC and the Puma joint ventures, is of course a key factor in the new IFV development.

Coming to the nearer future, artillery, the Leopard 2 evolution and future Boxer developments are the main topics on the play-table. These will be analysed in the coming articles.

Hornet RCWS Presented At SOFINS 2021

Hornet, an Arquus business unit, presents its RCWS (Remote-Controlled Weapon Stations) for the first time in France at SOFINS 2021.

Press Release, Satory, 30 June 2021: The 2021 edition of SOFINS is the opportunity for Hornet to present its range of Hornet remote-controlled weapon stations, already chosen by the French Army to equip its new generation of combat vehicles, the Griffon, Jaguar and Serval.

Within the framework of the exhibition, Hornet wishes to contribute in its own way to the reflection on the evolution of the equipment of Special Forces vehicles. This reflection is done today by inviting discussion on the relevance of modern tools such as remotely operated turrets for Special Forces units, both in France and abroad.

Trials of Army's new armoured vehicles halted again

Trials of the Army's new fleet of armoured vehicles have been halted for a second time over complaints about noise affecting the crew.

The Ministry of Defence said trials of the £5.5bn Ajax Armoured Vehicle programme would be "paused" after "renewed concerns" about the issue.
Announcing the decision, defence minister Jeremy Quin described the programme as "troubled".

Labour urged the government to "get a grip on this stop-start shambles".
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed a contract for 589 of the Ajax armoured vehicles in 2014 and has already spent nearly £3.5bn on the flagship programme.

The vehicles, which are being assembled by General Dynamics in Merthyr Tydfil in Wales, aim to be "fully digital" and provide the Army with a "family" of modern tracked armoured fighting vehicles. A spokesman for General Dynamics UK said it was "confident in its vehicle design" and that the MoD had told the firm the pause was "temporary and precautionary".

The MoD has launched a safety investigation, working with the company, which is set to finish at the end of next month.
Officials first halted trials in the four months to March after complaints that crews were suffering from temporary hearing loss and aching joints.
Testing resumed with "mitigations" in place in March, but it has now been paused again.
Mr Quin said: "This long-running troubled programme requires ongoing intense work by our industrial partners and ourselves to ensure its delivery. In achieving this, the safety of our personnel will always come first."

Labour's shadow defence secretary John Healey called on the government to ask the National Audit Office to do a special audit of the programme "to prevent billions more of taxpayer money being wasted". He added: "Only three weeks ago, ministers assured MPs that Ajax would begin operations from next week. The MoD must get a grip on this stop-start shambles. Ajax is over budget, behind schedule and still not working safely."
