Lithuania's BOXER Vehicles Will Receive Rafael's Samson Mk II Remote Weapon Stations with Spike Launchers

HAIFA --- Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd., developer and manufacturer of land, air and naval systems, has won a contract to supply its advanced Samson Mk II Remote Weapon Stations to the Lithuanian armed forces, as part of a deal that was signed to provide Lithuania with 88 high-protection BOXER vehicles starting in 2017.

The Samson Mk II is a dual-axis, gyro-stabilized, dual-sight (Gunner and Commander) remote-controlled weapon system capable of mounting multiple weapons. The Samson Mk II offers significant improvements, including lower silhouette, add-on armor protection, and improved hit accuracy, boosted crew survivability with under-armor reloading and increased rigidity - all of which enable improved combat continuity.

Rafael will deliver the Lithuanian army Samson Mk II RWS systems with a 30mm automatic cannon, 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun, with Rafael's Spike LR (Long Range) ATGM launchers carrying two missiles and eight smoke grenade launchers on each station. This will provide the Lithuanian armed forces improved lethality, increased mission flexibility in both urban and open terrain scenarios, with maximum survivability for the crew and vehicle.

Deployed in over 25 countries, Rafael RWS offered in four land configurations and two naval configurations (Typhoon Weapon Stations). Samson RWS support diverse, interchangeable weapons and sensors including 5.56/7.62/12.7 mm machine guns, 40 mm automatic grenade launchers, anti-tank missiles, observation pods, and non-lethal capabilities.

Mr. Moshe Elazar, Executive VP and Head of Rafael's Land and Naval Systems Division stated that this contract signifies Rafael's leadership in land systems that ensure force survivability, maneuverability and lethality at a cost-effective price and cutting-edge quality and performance, tailored to customers' individual needs and requirements. "We are proud to be an integral part in Lithuania's most significant land force program with our remote weapon stations and Spike missiles, and to provide the Lithuanian army with a major force-multiplier", added Elazar.

In this contract, Rafael is serving as a sub-contractor under ARTEC, a joint venture between Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) and Rheinmetall, which will deliver the vehicles with medium-calibre weaponry in a remote-controlled turret.

Toch doen ze zich nu wel degelijk zo voor en zien ze de Boxer nu wel als APC, in de hoop dat het ooit nog een IFV wordt met de toevoeging van een zwaarder wapensysteem.

Ter indicatie:
De US Army gaat een deel van haar 8x8 Strykers voorzien van de onbemande Kongsberg MCT-30 toren.
In december 2016 wordt het eerste Stryker-MCT-30 prototype verwacht en eind 2017 beginnen de leveringen van 83 MCT-30's tegen USD 329 miljoen = USD 3,96 miljoen = EUR 3,77 miljoen per toren.

Je krijgt dan wel de vuurkracht van een IFV, maar de mobiliteit van deze wiel IFV kan nooit tippen aan rups.

M-113A1: 11,2 metric tonnes, 7.82 psi, 0,55 kg/cm2.
M-113A2: 11,33 tonnes,       7.90 psi, 0,56 kg/cm2.

YPR-765: 13,69 tonnes,        9.60 psi, 0,67 kg/cm2.
YPR-765: 18 tonnes approx 12.64 psi, 0,88 kg/cm2.

CV9035 Mk III: 35 tonnes,                  0,80 kg/cm2
0,88 kg/cm2 is equal to that of MBT's and at 18 tonnes the YPR will not swim anymore.

There we go for example with the 27.600 kg CV-9040C (comparable to CV-9030 Mk II), up armored against KE and CE ammo and land mines. Norwegian CV9030 Mk I's withstood RPG-7's in Afghanistan.
The ground pressure of the CV9040C is only 0,63 kg/cm2. And if we change the steel tracks with rubber band tracks the total weight will drop with over 1.000 kg.
At 26.600 kg the CV9040C will have a ground pressure of 0,61 kg/cm2, this is comparable to the M-113A1. Take the 625 - 680 hp engine of the CV9030 Mk II and you have a good Power/Weight ratio of 22,64 - 24,64.

ASLAV-25 8x8 up-armored:  15 tonnes, > 26 psi,  > 1,81 kg/cm2
8x8 25 tons APC or IFV:       25 tonnes, > 35 psi,  > 2,44 kg/cm2

If we are able to equip a 35 tonne Boxer or equal with 23.5R 25 tyres (*) at just 2 bar. 
Than according to a Michelin instruction book:
At a rock hard underground, gives: 2,1 kg/cm2 or 30,1 psi
In soft soil, with wheels sinking 76 mm / 3": 0,9 kg/cm2 or 12.9 psi

The 0,9 kg/cm2 is comparable to that of MBT's. And at 1.6 bar this Boxer with 23.5R25 tyres could have a ground pressure of approx 0,85 kg/cm2.

This will certainly not make the cross country capabilities of wheeled IFV's equal to tracked fighting vehicles.  But they will get much closer to tracks.

Huzaar1 schoot dit voorstel al enkele pagina's geleden al af.
Maar ik ben een 'beetje' eigenwijs en ging dus eens bij KMW vragen wat zij er van vonden.
Deze dikke en grotere banden vergroten inderdaad de mobiliteit in rul zand en modder en geven inderdaad een veel lagere grond druk.
Maar daar staat ook tegenover dat deze banden de maximum snelheid op weg en cross country beperken tot 65 km/u.
Vergelijkbaar met de YPR-765 dus en rupsen kunnen nu eenmaal een grotere opstap en overstap aan.   Die 'dikke' banden gaan dus niet werken.
KMW wees er wel op dat men de cross country vaardigheden van wiel voertuigen nog flink kan verbeteren door de voorste en achterste wielen zover mogelijk op de hoeken te plaatsen en de tractie te verbeteren door de Power / Weight verhouding van rond de 21 pk/ton met 80 - 90 % te verhogen.
Dan kom je uit op bijvoorbeeld de Panhard CRAB, weegt 8 - 10 ton, heeft een motor van 320 pk, dus een P/W ratio van 40 - 32 pk/ton en kan mijnen aan van 6 - 8 kg TNT.
Maar deze kan weer geen infanteristen vervoeren, want patrouille voertuig, heeft overigens wel een 25mm of 30mm kanon in toren op het dak staan.
Deze aanzienlijk hogere P/W verhouding, de CRAB heeft 33 % meer PK's dan de vergelijkbare Fennek, heeft natuurlijk wel een extra aanschaf en exploitatie prijskaartje.
Dus ga je qua exploitatie kosten weer richting die van rups aandrijving.

13 Motbrig is absoluut geen manoeuvre eenheid, hooguit geschikt voor peace keeping missies en zeker niet voor peace enforcing missies a la Afghanistan of hoog intensieve conflicten.  En heeft dus ook geen behoefte aan IFV's.

Bij 13 Licht / motbrig krijg ik altijd associaties met de UNIFIL macht die wij naar Libanon zonden.  Die waren uitgerust met de YP408 met open .50 'toren' en de YP408 is van oorsprong bedoeld als een transportmiddel voor de KMAR en niet als infanterie gevecht / ondersteuning voertuig !    Je stond daarom met dat overigens mooie voertuig zo stil in bijvoorbeeld een zachte berm of talud, want 6X8 en geen 8X8 aandrijving.

De YP408 was dan ook niet voor niets een APC en geen IFV.

Misschien moest je dat maar eens tegen 13 Licht zeggen dan. En hoe zou jij de Boxer met Lance toren dan classificeren?

Ik ben ook geen voorstander van een Boxer IFV met bijvoorbeeld een 30mm, 35mm of 50mm wapen.
Ik denk dan alleen maar aan de UN INTERFRET missie in het tropische Oost-Timor in 2000.  Toen zette Australia haar 13,2 - 14,2 ton zware 8x8 ASLAV-25's daar in.
Ze werden al snel terug getrokken, want of ze sloopten de wegen of kwamen veel te snel vast te zitten.
Vervanging kwam in de vorm van de M-113, die wel (bijna) overal kon komen en dat zelfs tijdens het monsoon seizoen.
80 % van alle conflicten spelen zich af in de tropen.
Kom op zeg, de Boxer A2 weegt al 38,5 ton, dat is bijna even zwaar als een Leopard 1 !

Dat zwaar ding van ons is niet onderbewapend, want het is een ondersteuning voertuig en GEEN Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV).

Vorm komt altijd na functie en niet andersom.

Misschien moest je dat maar eens tegen 13 Licht zeggen dan. En hoe zou jij de Boxer met Lance toren dan classificeren?

Inderdaad is de keuze op deze toren gevallen omdat het een stuk goedkoper was als de Lance turret.

Edoch een waarschijnlijk zeer grote stap voorwaarts voor de Litouwse defensie.

Dat zwaar ding van ons is niet onderbewapend, want het is een ondersteuning voertuig en GEEN Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV).

Vorm komt altijd na functie en niet andersom.
De betreffende Samson Mk.2 toren kan echter slechts tot maximaal Stanag 4569 niveau 4 worden bepantserd.  Terwijl de Lance toren standaard bepantserd is op Stanag 4569 niveau 4 en kan worden opgewaardeerd tot en met niveau 6.
Er is ook geen laser waarschuwing systeem en geen rook granaat werpers aanwezig.  Een Remote Weapon System (RWS) kan ook niet op deze toren worden geschroefd.
Plus de ATGW lanceerbuizen zijn niet voorzien van dempers tegen de trillingen.   Dus je ATGW's hebben maar een korte levensduur.
De Samson Mk.2 is onbemand, dus dat is nadelig voor je omstandigheden overzicht.  Ik ben geen voorstander van een onbemande toren, tenzij het voertuig wordt voorzien van een Active Protection System (APS) die geïntegreerd met je Battlefield Management System voor een sterk verbeterd omstandigheden overzicht zorgt.
De Lance toren beschikt over 2 fors uitgevallen sensor torentjes die groter zijn dan die 2 sensor 'ballen' op de Samson Mk.2.
Wie heeft de beste sensors ?
De Samson Mk.2 kan wel eleveren van - 20 graden tot en met 70 graden, terwijl de Lance toren een elevatie kent van - 10 t/m 45 graden.

Minister J. Olekas: "The Contract for 88 IFVs Is the Signal That Lithuania Takes Care of Its Security"

On August 22 the contract of procuring infantry fighting vehicles (IFV) for the Lithuanian Armed Forces was signed at the Ministry of National Defence. 88 IFVs manufactured according to requirements set out by the Lithuanian Armed Forces will be bought for the sum of EUR 385.6 million.

The contract was endorsed by the Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas, managing directors of ARTEC GmbH, the Boxer IFV manufacturer, Stefan Lischka and Christoph Heuman, and OCCAR director Tim Rowntree.

By the contract, combat vehicles manufactured by a German-Dutch consortium with Israeli-made turrets and armed with 30 mm cannons and "Spike LR" antitank missiles are bought for the average price of EUR 4.38 m per one.

Lithuania and the IFV manufacturer agreed that the vehicles will be renamed from "Boxer" to IFV "Vilkas" IFVs to retain the ties with the history of Lithuania and the traditions of the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

The first IFVs "Vilkas" are expected to be delivered in late 2017, and the rest would arrive by 2021.

"The signature today crowns the efforts of the Ministry of National Defence to provide the Lithuanian Armed Forces with quality and value for money product. It is a long-term investment into national defence and also a signal that Lithuania takes its security and investments into it seriously," Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas said.

"Today's contract signature is a key milestone in the delivery of a modern and highly effective armoured vehicle capability to Lithuania. Within less than eight months, our strong joint team from Lithuania, Germany, The Netherlands, the BOXER industry and OCCAR have developed this highly capable and value for money package, which will provide Lithuania with world class capability and flexibility for decades to come. I and my team are honoured to play our role in delivering this vital programme for the defence and security of Lithuania and I am delighted to welcome Lithuania to the OCCAR community," OCCAR director Tim Rowntree said.

The new IFVs will be distributed to the Lithuanian Grand Duke Algirdas Mechanised and the Grand Duchess Birutė Uhlan Battalions of the Mechanised Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf.

"The IFVs will provide greater mobility, force protection and firepower for the battalions and the entire Brigade. In operational terms, we will not only have the ability to take troops to the battlefield safely, but also to be effective on the battlefield as we destroy armoured and unarmoured targets at the distance of up to 4 km. In technical term, our units will be better at integration and operation side by side with our allies," – Chief of Defence Lieutenant General Jonas Vytautas Žukas said.

Prior to signing the IFV procurement contract the memorandum of understanding between Ministry of National Defence of Lithuania, the Ministry of Defence of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and the Federal Ministry of Defence of the Federal Republic of Germany was signed.

Another contract signed by representatives of OCCAR and Lithuania defined the scope, guidelines and authority of cooperation of Lithuania and OCCAR.

Lithuania joined the OCCAR Boxer Programme and authorised OCCAR to supervise execution of the procurement project and conduct qualitative expertise of the "Vilkas" IFVs vehicles bought. As part of the Boxer Programme, Lithuania will benefit from all the advantages offered: smaller development and maintenance costs, sharing technologies, and better interoperability with other participants of the programme.

The Boxer IFVs manufactured by ARTEC, a joint venture of German Krauss-MaffeiWegmann and Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles, and Dutch Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles Nederland, were selected for the needs of the Lithuanian Armed Forces as the best value for money choice and as fulfilling additional Lithuanian Armed Forces' requirements for maximum personnel protection and delivery time.

Procurement Contract On Acquisition o Boxer Infantry Fighting Vehicles Will Be Signed On August 22

On August 22 the contract on procurement of the Boxer infantry fighting vehicles (IFV) for the Lithuanian Armed Forces will be signed at the Ministry of National Defence. The decision to do so was taken on August 16 by the MoD Council on Defence Resources after hearing the report of the Infantry Fighting Vehicles Work Group on the negotiations and their results regarding acquisition of infantry fighting vehicles.

On account of the security classification given to the contract, media opportunity will not be provided during the signing ceremony. Leadership of the Ministry of National Defence and the Lithuanian Armed Forces, and a representative from OCCAR (Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation) which mediates in Lithuania's acquisition of the Boxer IFVs will meet with media representatives following the event.
