Air Force to Get New 'Light' Fighter

No, it's not a super-cruising, radar-evading marvel like the Lockheed Martin F-22, or a versatile jack-of-all-trades like Lockmart's F-35. The Air Force's newest combat aircraft will be a "fixed-wing platform" for "strike, armed reconnaissance and advanced aircraft training in support of Irregular Warfare." In other words, a light fighter — something the U.S. military hasn't had in meaningful numbers since the Vietnam War.

Possible candidates range from modern small jets like the Alenia M-346 from Italy, to a revamped World War II P-51 Mustang called the "Enforcer." The Brazilian Embraer Super Tucano, pictured, might have leg up, since the Navy is already using it in a similar role.

The idea is to quickly and cheaply build 100 rugged, easily deployable planes that can swing between bombing the bad guys one day, to training up local pilots the next day. In April, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz said he even wants pilots for these planes "to have language skills that's a part of their repertoire." The Air Force has long had special training teams for working with fledgling air forces in places like Iraq and Afghanistan, but in the future, the same teams might also fly combat missions.

The Air Force's request for information for this new plane, published in late July, represents a big push inside the air service to get serious about small, dirty wars, stat. The new fighters are due by 2012. In the meantime, the Air Force is also buying dozens of cheap, manned surveillance planes and 60 light airlifters to bolster its new Irregular Warfare Wing. In all, the three new plane types will cost around $700 million — around the same cost as five F-22s.

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates had tried for many months to get the Air Force to take small wars seriously. "It's been like pulling teeth," Gates said. It took firing the air service's top officials, plus a new presidential administration, to finally make change happen. The Air Force's new focus flowed out of Gates' desire to "institutionalize and finance our capabilities to fight the wars we are in today and the scenarios we are most likely to face in the years ahead." That means buying weapons that work, fast, instead of "the 99-percent exquisite service-centric platforms that are so costly and so complex that they take forever to build."

The new planes come at the expense of exquisite planes like the F-22 — and of "legacy" planes, too. The Air Force is in the process of cutting more than 200 F-15s, F-16s and A-10s from its current, 2,250-strong fighter fleet. But Gates said the Air Force can afford to have fewer big fighters, because the U.S. has such a huge margin of superiority over any potential rival, in the air. "By 2020, the United States is projected to have nearly 2,500 manned combat aircraft of all kinds" in the Air Force, Navy and Marines, Gates said. "Of those, nearly 1,100 will be the most advanced fifth-generation F-35s and F-22s. China, by contrast, is projected to have no fifth-generation aircraft by 2020. And by 2025, the gap only widens."

The U.S. fighter count is bolstered by the Pentagon's recent decision to count the latest MQ-9 Reaper drones as fighters, too. The Air Force expects even more capable drone fighters in the next 15 years. But that's not to say the Pentagon is backing away from manned fighters. The Defense Department is "serious" about fielding hundreds of F-35s, as quickly as possible, spokesman Geoff Morrell told Danger Room — even if that means plowing extra hundreds of millions of dollars into testing.

What's emerging is no less than a "new" U.S. Air Force, with a more diverse mix of manned and unmanned fighters for all kinds of wars: big ones, small ones, and those "hybrid" wars in-between. The result, in a decade's time, could be history's most capable air force. But that doesn't mean that paid aerospace consultants won't continuing bemoaning the end of the F-22 program at just 187 planes. After all, the best air force isn't always the most lucrative for the defense industry.

Boeing pitches OV-10X Bronco for USAF light attack
By Stephen Trimble on September 11, 2009 8:49 PM

Boeing confirms it has proposed building new OV-10s with upgraded avionics and weapons for the US Air Force light attack contract.

Subscription-only Inside the Air Force broke the news this morning.

Boeing provided the photo above, providing a glimpse of the new OV-10 concept. The image will surely be embraced by the Bronco's devoted following, who remember the aircraft's notably effective service in the Vietnam War.

The OV-10 could face competition from other Vietnam-era light attack aircraft, such as the Piper Aircraft PA-48 Enforcer. A new class of turboprop fighter-trainers, such as the AT-6 and the Embraer Super Tucano are also vying for the contract. Alenia, meanwhile, plans to offer the jet-powered M346 trainer.

Boeing inherits the OV-10 Bronco's design rights from its purchase in the 1980s of North American Rockwell, the aircraft's original manufacturer.

US Air Force cancels deal for Brazilian-made aircraft

The US Air Force has canceled a $355 million contract for a light attack aircraft made by Brazil's Embraer, saying it would open an investigation after protests from a rival US aerospace firm, officials said Tuesday.
The contract for 20 Embraer AT-29 Super Tucano aircraft was awarded in December as part of plans to arm the Afghan military amid a NATO troop drawdown.
But the US Air Force said it was not "satisfied" with the paperwork supporting the decision to hand the project to US-based Sierra Nevada Corporation, in partnership with Embraer.
The US military wants to provide a light aircraft for Afghan's air fleet to conduct flight training, aerial reconnaissance and combat support operations for ground troops.
The AT-29 Super Tucano is a turboprop aircraft designed for low threat environments.
However Hawker Beechcraft Corp, based in Wichita, Kansas, protested the award, arguing that its AT-6 plane was unfairly shut out of the competition.
Embraer officials denied the allegations but were unable to stop a government investigation.
"Today, the Air Force advised the Department of Justice that it will take corrective action on the Afghanistan Light Air Support contract and will set aside the contract award to Sierra Nevada effective March 2, 2012," the Air Force said in a statement.
"While we pursue perfection, we sometimes fall short, and when we do we will take corrective action," Air Force Secretary Michael Donley said in the same statement.
He added that the service's senior acquisition executive "is not satisfied with the quality of the documentation supporting the award decision" but did not elaborate, citing pending litigation.
The statement also said the head of Air Force Materiel Command, General Donald Hoffman, has launched an investigation into the award.
Lawmakers who represent Kansas, where Hawker Beechcraft is located, had raised questions about the deal with Sierra Nevada and Embraer.
In Brazil, Embraer said in a statement that it had provided "on time and without exceptions, all the required documentation" in partnership with Sierra Nevada.
The decision "in favor of the Super Tucano... was a choice for the best product with proven performance in action and all the necessary capabilities to meet client demands," Embraer said.

US still interested in Brazil warplanes: official

The United States remains interested in a possible purchase of light attack aircraft made by Brazil's Embraer despite cancelling a contract this week, a top US official said Thursday.
Deputy Secretary of State William Burns, on a visit to Rio de Janeiro, said the contract cancellation was not a reflection on the Super Tucano -- to be used in Afghanistan -- which he described as "a very fine aircraft."
Brazil's foreign ministry issued a strongly-worded statement, voicing its "surprise" at the cancellation of the bid, particularly "its manner and timing."
"This development is not considered conducive to strengthening relations between the two countries on defense affairs," the terse statement said.
The Pentagon cancelled Tuesday a $355 million contract with US firm Sierra Nevada Corp. and Brazil's Embraer, and announced an investigation after a legal challenge from rival American aerospace firm Hawker Beechcraft Corp.
"Embraer is a great company and the Super Tucano is a very fine aircraft," Burns told reporters in Rio. "The US is now in the midst of some internal processes but we remain interested."
Burns said there was no link between that contract and a tough bidding war in Brazil for 36 air force fighter jets. US-based Boeing is battling for the deal worth between $4-7 billion with France's Dassault and Swedish maker Saab.
"They are two separate issues," Burns said.
"We're convinced that the (Boeing) F18 is the best available aircraft. One thing that reflects that is that it's the aircraft the US is going to be using for the next 20 or 30 years," he said.
"We're convinced that the technology transfer package that we're offering along with that aircraft is unprecedented in our relationship and is also the best of the available packages."
On the Embraer contract, US General Norton Schwartz said Wednesday that the Air Force would move "quickly" to relaunch the contest for 20 light support planes for the Afghan military as funds for the program will expire at the end of fiscal year 2013.
The contract for 20 Embraer AT-29 Super Tucano aircraft was awarded in December as part of plans to arm the Afghan military amid a NATO troop drawdown.
But the US Air Force said it was not "satisfied" with the paperwork and announced a review of the award.

Test Center proves modern weapons for light attack aircraft

Posted 9/29/2011

by Maj. Gabe Johnson
162nd Fighter Wing Public Affairs

9/29/2011 - TUCSON, Ariz.  -- It's light, lean, cost effective - and now lethal. The AT-6C light attack aircraft in testing here successfully employed precision-guided munitions for the first time Sept. 28.

In three test flights over Southern Arizona's Barry M. Goldwater Range the experimental airplane dropped three GBU-12s - 500-pound laser-guided bombs - and each hit its intended target.

A team of test pilots and engineers converged on the Air National Guard, Air Force Reserve Command Test Center (AATC) based at Tucson International Airport to put the propeller-driven airplane through two weeks of air-to-ground and air-to-air weapons testing.

"We're very happy. This is a culmination of a year and half of test effort for us," said Lt. Col. Keith Colmer, developmental test pilot and director of engineering for AATC. "This was the first time that we brought light attack into the modern generation of weapons."

Though light attack is not an Air Force procurement program, AATC's task is to report its findings to senior leaders early next year to help refine requirements.

The turbo prop, speed of the aircraft, configuration of the cockpit and general appearance of the Hawker Beechcraft AT-6 are very similar to aircraft the Air Force was known for decades ago, yet Colonel Colmer and his team are working with technology borrowed from A-10s and F-16s to show that modern weapons can overcome some of the limitations associated with a lack jet engines.

"You feel the air a lot more than you would with hydraulically actuated flight controls," said Dan Hinson, AT-6 lead test pilot and test manager for Hawker Beechcraft Defense Company. "It has an honest feel to it. With a heads up display in the cockpit it feels very much at home to a fighter pilot. It's easy to step in and start employing tactically."

The result is a low-cost, light attack aircraft that could one day fill a role that resides between remotely piloted aircraft and high-performance fighters, while blending many of their capabilities. At under $1,000 per flying hour, officials say a light attack platform can save money while sparing the service's current fleet from unnecessary wear and tear.

Over several months the team modified the AT-6 to carry munitions, mounted avionics and computer systems, a targeting sensor and much more.

"Since October [2010], we've been dropping unguided weapons from the airplane," said Colonel Colmer, an F-16 pilot by trade. "Sometimes, advanced weapons create lift when they're dropped from an aircraft. They can inadvertently fly back up and hit the airplane. There's a lot of tweaking that has to be done so we can get a clean separation... which was exactly what we got today."

Next week Colmer's team will test the GBU-58, a new 250-pound precision-munition that produces less blast radius and less collateral damage - a suitable weapon for counter insurgency and close air support missions.

"Also, due to their lower weight, the AT-6 would be able to carry a number of them in combat," he said.

Test Center officials also intend to prove air-to-air capabilities in upcoming trials. Next week the team will mount and test 50-caliber gun pods, firing rounds at a targeting banner in tow 2,000 feet behind a Cessna Conquest.

"We're very interested in how that performs. It could be employed for an [Aerospace Control Alert] Noble Eagle mission or counter drug mission," he said.

In the aircraft's final phase of tests in December, AATC will employ experimental weapons, specifically, laser-guided rockets with a longer range and even less collateral damage.

The Test Center, which conducts operational tests on behalf of the Guard and Reserve, is a compact group of active duty, Guard, Reserve, civilian and contractor members who field low-cost, low-risk, off-the-shelf improvements for aircraft and weapon systems across the combat Air Force. Its unique efficiency makes it well suited for building and evaluating a light attack aircraft.

"I have never worked with an organization that is as flexible and capable as AATC has been," said Hinson. "They can technically analyze problems, logically evaluate risk and then make solid risk management decisions and go execute. Because of that we've been able to move extraordinarily fast."

In addition to AT-6 testing, the center is currently working on new software and high-definition color displays for F-16s, logistics maintenance modernization for A-10s, improved situational awareness for HH-60 cockpits, and several projects to enhance mobility and special operations forces.

Test center fuses old, new technology for light attack

Posted 10/14/2010

by Maj. Gabe Johnson

10/14/2010 - DAVIS-MONTHAN AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz. (AFNS) -- Test pilots and engineers here are learning what happens when high-tech systems are combined with low-tech airframes for a new, cost effective, light-attack aircraft.

Light attack, a revitalized concept in the Air Force, addresses the need for an airplane that offers surveillance as well as strike capabilities and walks the line between remotely piloted aircraft and high-performance fighters.

In appearance, Hawker Beechcraft AT-6Cs resemble the fighters of yesteryear with single engine propellers and shark-face nose art. They are, in actuality, one possible candidate for Air Force light attack aircraft and the latest project for Air National Guard Air Force Reserve Command Test Center officials based at Tucson International Airport.

Lt. Col. Keith Colmer, a developmental test pilot and director of engineering for AATC, deployed to Iraq in early 2008, where he flew numerous close air support missions in F-16 Fighting Falcons.

During more than 100 combat hours, he served as an eye in the sky for Army elements but he said he rarely engaged the enemy on their behalf.

"Right now we are paying a high cost to fly an F-16 in terms of fuel and wear and tear for missions that don't require the full capabilities of the airplane," said Colonel Colmer, who leads AATC's light-attack program. "With fourth generation fighters nearing the end of their service life, a light-attack platform could take on these kinds of missions and lighten the load."

The test center, which conducts operational tests on behalf of the Reserve, is manned by a team of active-duty, Guard, Reserve, civilian and contractor members who field low-cost, low-risk, off-the-shelf improvements for aircraft and weapons systems.

Officials said the center's unique efficiency is perfect for building and evaluating a light-attack aircraft.

"In keeping with our '80 percent of the capability for 20 percent of the cost' motto, we took existing technology from the A-10 (Thunderbolt II) and F-16 and inserted it in the AT-6," Colonel Colmer said.

Mounted next to the AT-6's manual flight controls, levers, cables and pulleys are mission computers, situational awareness data links, radios, helmet-mounted cueing systems, hands-on stick and throttles, threat countermeasures and armament pylons typically found on current fighter and attack aircraft.

"We learned a lot from initial testing earlier this year and made several adjustments," Colonel Colmer said. "The testing this month is about bringing in testers from around the Air Force; A-10 and F-16 pilots from Edwards (Air Force Base, Calif.), Nellis (AFB, Nev.), and Eglin (AFB, Fla.)"

"Overall, pilots are coming back after flying it excited about light attack," Colonel Colmer said. "They're enjoying the sorties and the aircraft's capabilities. Almost everyone has a list of things they would like to change, but that's what we expected. Now we'll take their input and make it a better aircraft."

Maj. Jesse Smith, an A-10 pilot from the 422nd Test and Evaluation Squadron at Nellis AFB, flew the modified AT-6 during a simulated combat search and rescue sortie Oct. 7.

"It's easy to handle," Major Smith said. "They took some of the systems and avionics from the A-10, so that made it easier for me to step in. Based on the scenario we had today, we were able to go out and execute."

"It's not the answer for everything, but if you look at what's going on in Iraq and Afghanistan, it's a good concept that can save money."

To buy and operate a light-attack aircraft costs pennies on the dollar compared to an A-10 or F-16.

For the A-10 or F-16, the cost per flying hour is around 15,000 to 17,000 dollars for fuel and maintenance.

Test center officials say the AT-6 is currently running at about 600 dollars per hour.

Though light attack is not viewed as a replacement for jets, Airmen here are finding out that the two-seat turboprop can fill a number of roles.

Pilots are examining the AT-6 as a companion trainer to give them a firsthand look at close air support from the air.

Combat controllers and tactical air control party members are also evaluating the aircraft as a possible trainer.

"Right now in the (joint terminal attack control) community, there are not enough sorties to keep them trained," Colonel Colmer said. "One thought is that this type of aircraft could be based with their units so they could get more practice with controlling an aircraft that adequately replicates an A-10 or F-16. They could even fly more often to gain a sense of a pilot's perspective."

In domestic operations it could support border security, counter drug and homeland defense.

For state missions, during fires, floods or other disasters, it could use sensors to map out an area for responders.

Additionally, officials believe a light-attack platform can help build partner nation air forces that lack the funding and the need for jet-powered aircraft.

"It's exciting to be a proponent for light attack in this early stage when the possibilities seem endless and we can demonstrate what one of these airplanes could do," said Colonel Colmer, who emphasized that light attack is not yet a procurement program.

Usually, testing occurs after an aircraft is purchased. In this case, Colonel Colmer and his team have a unique opportunity to help develop and refine a set of technologies and weapons for a light-attack airplane and give decision makers a clear picture before they buy a platform.

"For the last 18 months, we've been working on requirements and technologies to integrate on the aircraft," Colonel Colmer said. "Future iterations of tests will integrate Hellfire missiles, Aim 9 Sidewinders and various other weapons."

The LAAR Lightweight Combat Aircraft Is Coming to the Air Force

A small, nimble warplane – an economical featherweight compared to robust combat aircraft like the 40-ton F-15E Strike Eagle – now enjoys a high priority on the Air Force's shopping list as the service remakes itself for counter-insurgency conflicts.

Under the OA-X program begun in September 2008, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz is pushing toward an eventual, $2 billion purchase of up to 100 Light Attack Armed Reconnaissance (LAAR) aircraft. The LAAR is likely to be a turboprop aircraft and will be part of mainstream Air Force operations. Air Combat Command (ACC) is performing developmental work rather than, as might be expected in an unorthodox effort, Air Force Special Operations Command.

One observer, given a glimpse of ACC's capabilities-based assessment conducted in 2009, made the comment that, "this looks a lot like World War II." That was a reference to the likely airframe and the guns and bombs it will carry, not to the 21st century digital avionics ACC expects to pack inside. An ACC official responded: "Yeah. We get that a lot."

Among aircraft being proposed are the AirTractor AT802U (a modified crop duster, demonstrated at the 2009 Paris Air Show), Alenia M346, Embraer EMB-314 Super Tucano, Hawker Beechcraft AT-6B Texan II, and Pilatus PC-6 Porter. Pentagon officials say LAAR must be derived from an "in production" aircraft design. Boeing, however, is proposing an OV-10(X) Bronco, based on the twin-engine, twin-boom forward air control aircraft of the Vietnam era, which the planemaker would return to production at a facility not yet chosen.

Light Air Support (LAS) Contest Between AT-6 Texan II, Super Tucano Continues

Observers in Washington believe the U.S. Air Force will make a source selection in its Light Air Support (LAS) aircraft program later this summer after the original deadline passed in June.

The LAS office at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, issued an October 2010 request for proposals that covers 20 aircraft to be used at two bases by the Afghan air force and 15 more for American use. LAS is now characterized as a modest program to "build partner capability" by training Third World air forces. It replaces earlier acquisition plans identified by the abbreviations OA-X and LAAR.

LAS has become a head-to-head competition between the Hawker Beechcraft AT-6 Texan II (previously identified variously as the AT-6B and AT-6C) and the Embraer EMB-314 Super Tucano, also called the A-29 or AT-29. Both aircraft use the 1,600 shaft horsepower Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-68A/D engine – an upgrade for the AT-6 and standard on the Super Tucano.

The AT-6 is an armed version of a well established and very successful trainer, while the Super Tucano is a derivative of a trainer designed from the outset as a tactical warplane.

Hawker Beechcraft's AT-6 Guns For Embraer's Super Tucano: Rival Planes Compared

It's Texan versus Tucano, take two, and the embarrassed Air Force has got to get it right this time.

For more news and information on the swiftly-changing defense industry, please sign up for the AOL Defense newsletter. For the quickest updates, like us on Facebook.

With all the claims, counter-claims, and rumors swirling about the controversial contract to buy the Embraer Super Tucano, which the Air Force cancelled unexpectedly on Tuesday and will likely re-compete, AOL Defense went both to the rival companies and independent sources to distill this definitive guide to the competition, from the two planes' performance to the manufacturers' twenty-year history of feuding.

The bottom line? Both leading competitors are offering small, propeller-driven planes that derive from foreign designs but will be built in the United States. Hawker Beechcraft's AT-6 Texan II (pictured above) is smaller, quicker, and more familiar to U.S. pilots and maintainers because of its similarity to the standard T-6 trainer. The Embraer Super Tucano is a larger plane with a solid track record of operating in tough conditions for non-U.S. air forces. Other contenders, including a militarized crop duster called the Air Tractor AT-800 and a proposal to resurrect the Vietnam-era OV-10 Bronco, are out of the running. It's down to two, and all eyes are on the Air Force.

For the Air Force: Small program, big stakes

The $355 million Light Air Support contract, intended as a (by Pentagon standards) quick and cheap way to get easy-to-operate ground attack planes for the nascent Afghan Air Force, has ballooned into a major embarrassment. Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz told reporters yesterday that "Our institutional reputation is at stake." While the Air Force's formal court filings from Tuesday say only that the current contract award is "set aside" and the service is merely "reserving the right to conduct a whole new competition" rather than pledging to hold one, it's hard to see how the service can take any short-cuts and satisfy the intense public scrutiny.

But time is tight to re-compete the program: The Air Force has until September 30th – the end of the fiscal year – to use or lose the LAS funding. It has until April 2013 – the start of the spring fighting season in Afghanistan – to meet its original deadline to field the planes, whose close-support capabilities commanders on the ground first called for in a "Joint Urgent Operational Needs Statement" back in 2009. The Air Force and Navy tested Super Tucanos for the job under programs called Combat Dragon and Imminent Fury, but the Senate pulled the funding, reportedly under pressure from the Kansas delegation – which happens to be Hawker Beechcraft's home state.

For the companies: two decades of dogfights

At $355 million for the first 20 aircraft, up to a maximum of $950 million if the Air Force exercises all its options for additional planes, the Light Air Support program is a modest one by Pentagon standards. Why all the furor? For the makers of the rival airplanes, Kansas-based Hawker Beechcraft and Brazil's Embraer, this is just the latest battle in a larger war.

"There are so many other issues between Embraer and Hawker that this brings things to the head," said industry analyst Richard Aboulafia, of the Fairfax, Va.-based Teal Group, in an interview with AOL Defense. Hawker's bread and butter isn't defense contracts, it's business jets, and that's a market into which Embraer has been moving aggressively in recent years, just as the recession dried up sales. For Embraer to move in on the military market too was just too much. Hawker and partners have put $100 million of their own money into developing the AT-6 in hopes of foreign military sales, estimating a global demand for 450 to 550 light attack planes over the next decade (Aboulafia says half that many says is more realistic). "We've invested to have the capability to meet a need in the world market, this is the first significant competition in that market, and we don't intend to lose," Hawker Beechcraft chairman Bill Boisture told AOL Defense. And, unlike in business-jet sales, the intense "Buy American" passions stirred up in Congress also create an opportunity for Hawker to strike back.

This isn't the first time Hawker and Embraer have gone head-to-head for a military contract. In 1990-1991, both companies entered the competition for the Joint Primary Aircraft Training System (JPATS) contract to provide a propeller-driving training plane for both the Air Force and the Navy – a $7 billion program for over 700 planes. Hawker entered a Swiss design, the Pilatus PC-9, which the Air Force designated the T-6 Texan II (the original "Texan" was a World War II-era plane); today's AT-6 is basically a T-6 upgraded for combat with a stronger wing, bigger engine, and better electronics. Embraer, with Northrop as its U.S. partner, entered their original Tucano. Hawker won. It was a big blow for the Brazilians. Afterwards they went back to the drawing board and redesigned their plane from the ground up as the Super Tucano – the plane they're offering the Air Force today.

The aircraft: size matters

Both rivals are offering small, propeller-driven planes that evolved from training aircraft. But within that niche, there are sizable differences – starting with size: The Super Tucano is just plain bigger than the AT-6. That's a double-edged sword, especially since the two planes have the same amount of horsepower.

"This is a larger, heavier airplane; I didn't make that up, it's in the specs," said Boisture of his rival, the Super Tucano. "[But] it's got the same engine our airplane has. So what that means is it's slower, it can haul less payload, it can stay on station less time than our airplane" – a heavier plane burns fuel faster – "and it's frankly less maneuverable."

For Embraer and its U.S. partner Sierra Nevada Corporation, however, size is a selling point. For one thing, the Super Tucano's guns are built into the aircraft, whereas the AT-6 has to mount guns externally in pods, leaving less room under the wing for bombs. Being bigger also allows larger control surfaces – rudders, flaps, tail – so, they say, the Super Tucano is more stable in flight, which is helpful for low-level bombing and strafing runs. The longer fuselage also means the Super Tucano's landing gear are further apart, an advantage in landing on dirt airstrips in rugged places like Afghanistan. It even allows the "sensor ball" that guides the aircraft's weapons to be placed further forward for a clearer field of view. Finally, "it has built in growth space, so the aircraft is at the beginning of its growth curve," said Sierra Nevada vice-president Taco Gilbert. "It's easy to modify."

The aircraft: track records

The best test of the competing claims, of course, would be in combat. That's where the Super Tucano has an edge, with a hundred planes in Brazilian Air Force service, two dozen in Colombia, and smaller numbers sold, according to Aboulafia, to Chile, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Indonesia, and even Burkina Faso. None of these aircraft has seen the kind of combat that's likely in Afghanistan, but the Brazilians and Colombians have used them against narco-guerrillas like the notorious FARC, which has shot at low-flying aircraft with an arsenal of assault rifles and heavy machineguns similar to the Taliban's. More conclusive is the evidence of simply operating day-to-day in the demanding environment of the Amazon, where heat, humidity, minimal maintenance, and hard landings on dirt airstrips – even dirt roads – all take a toll on aircraft. While Hawker Beechcraft points out their plane has met and exceeded the Air Force's requirements in tests, there are only two AT-6 prototypes even in existence, with nothing like the Super Tucano's real-world track record.

Where the AT-6 has the advantage, however, is in its commonality with the T-6 trainer, which beat out the original Tucano to become the standard plane in which U.S. Air Force and Navy pilots all learn to fly. The two AT-6 prototypes have only a thousand hours of flight time between them, but the T-6 fleet has flown over 3.8 million hours. That means a high comfort level for U.S. pilots and, even more important, for maintenance crews, since T-6 and AT-6 have about 85 percent of their parts in common. If the U.S. were buying a Light Air Support plane for its own use, the simplified logistics alone would make the AT-6 a slam-dunk – but we're buying it for the Afghans, so it's not.

The bottom line: American jobs

Of course, while the Air Force is supposed to base its decision on fine distinctions of performance, what politicians and the press care most about is jobs. Hawker Beechcraft has hammered on the theme that buying the AT-6 would create 1,400 U.S. jobs: eight hundred directly at Hawker Beechcraft's plant in Wichita, another six hundred estimated in the supplier base.

The only published figure for jobs building the Super Tucano? Fifty. Hawker Beechcraft has had a field day with this figure, but Sierra Nevada Corp. says this was just to build the two airplanes specified in an early Request For Proposal the program has grown beyond. "We were in the process of scaling up those numbers when we were issued a stop work order," said Gilbert. Until Sierra Nevada has solid figures, he said, "we will not inflate numbers, we will not speculate."

Gilbert will say, though, that "this contract produces zero jobs in Brazil." Embraer's Brazil facility will only stamp out the sheet metal for the wings and fuselage, he said, and everything else will be done in the U.S., either at an Embraer facility in Jacksonville, Florida or Sierra Nevada's in (unsurprisingly) Nevada. In fact, even the planes currently being put together in Brazil use over 86 percent (by value) American-built parts, Gilbert said: "They have to be shipped from the U.S. down to Brazil, so actually this is an easier way to produce this airplane, because we don't have to ship the parts as far." That is, of course, assuming they get to build the plane at all.

Air Force to Axe Super Tucano, Investigate Choice Of Brazilian Plane For Afghanistan

BREAKING [updated 4:15 pm with new contractor responses]: The Air Force will terminate its contract to buy a new Light Air Support plane for the fledgling Afghan air force, and it will launch an investigation into the original decision to select the Brazilian-designed Super Tucano aircraft being provided by Sierra Nevada Corporation. Rival contractor Hawker Beechcraft filed suit in January after the Air Force excluded its AT-6 aircraft from the competition, getting a stop-work order imposed on the program. Since then, the two companies have been involved in a bitter press and lobbying battle, complete with bizarre rumors involving George Soros, over the merits of their aircraft and the number of jobs each would create in the U.S. But the termination announcement is an ominous new development in the troubled program and a new setback for an Air Force procurement system that has repeatedly run aground on contract disputes in recent years.

"I'm surprised," said industry analyst Richard Aboulafia. "Normally if there's a problem, GAO discovers it before it gets to this level....It looked as though the Air Force procurement system had gotten its act together after the horrors of KC-X and CSAR-X."

"It is the Air Force's intention to terminate the contract," Air Force spokesperson Jennifer Cassidy told AOL Defense. Cassidy provided a written statement reading:

Today, the Air Force advised the Department of Justice that it will take corrective action on the Afghanistan Light Air Support contract and will set aside the contract award to Sierra Nevada effective March 2, 2012. Michael B. Donley, the Secretary of the Air Force, said, "While we pursue perfection, we sometimes fall short, and when we do we will take corrective action. Since the acquisition is still in litigation, I can only say that the Air Force Senior Acquisition Executive, David Van Buren, is not satisfied with the quality of the documentation supporting the award decision." Additionally, General Donald Hoffman, commander of Air Force Materiel Command, has initiated a Commander Directed Investigation into the matter.

"I found out this morning," said a weary Taco Gilbert, a retired Air Force general and current Sierra Nevada vice-president, in an interview with AOL Defense. "We had no intimations this was coming.... Certainly after having gone through the award process, the appeal to the GAO, and well into the preparation for the litigation, we had not expected this turn."

Where next? "We would expect to receive direction in the next few days where the Air Force will go with the program," Gilbert said, "and we remain committed to the program because we believe we have the right solution for the warfighter... We're disappointed, but quite frankly we're determined to go forward. We remain confident in the aircraft and very confident in the team that we pulled together."

Rival Hawker Beechcraft issued a statement from company chairman Bill Boisture, also a former Air Force pilot, praising the decision to "reinstate Hawker Beechcraft Defense Company to the competitive range under the procurement." The company's website touting their AT-6 aircraft linked to a statement from Kansas Congressman Mike Pompeo, whose district is Hawker Beechcraft's home and who sounded outright exultant: "I applaud the United States Air Force for finally starting to remove the veil of secrecy with regard to the LAS contract," Pompeo's statement said. "I've said consistently that something about this didn't smell right, and I'm glad I followed my instincts to fight for Hawker Beechcraft and for the jobs it provides for Kansans."

The fight isn't over yet, however. The Air Force has yet to determine whether it will hold a new competition for the contract -- or perhaps scrap it altogether. Aboulafia's bet on what happens next? The latest anti-American riots in Afghanistan and attacks on U.S. advisors in Afghan government ministries "strongly suggest that this doesn't happen," he said. "In these circumstances, continuing to buy Air Force aircraft for an ally that looks unlikely to remain an ally for more than a six month time horizon just doesn't seem like a workable proposition."

Mans En Garde: OV-10 Bronco

MICHIEL MANS: 29-09-20

(https://www.defensieforum.nl/Forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thepostonline.nl%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2012%2F09%2FOV10forumscramble.jpg&hash=ef8231a45e22b1310c0cb1674aaf01dcf228f512)

Piper PA-48 Enforcer
(https://www.defensieforum.nl/Forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thepostonline.nl%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2012%2F09%2FPiperEnforcer.jpg&hash=7e5866f2bc030a5779fb6b36b16dd13d9c20589e)

This diagram provides a direct comparison of the A-29 Super Tucano and the AT-6 prototype. While the AT-6 was upgraded to the same 1,600 shaft horse power Pratt and Whitney PT6 engine utilized by the A-29 (though with no corresponding change to the control surfaces), that is where the similarities stop.

At first glance you can see that the A-29 Super Tucano is a significantly larger aircraft than the AT-6. It also sits higher off the ground. The A-29's size and height advantage are coupled with ultra-rugged landing gear that have a broad stance -- greater distance between the wheels. This makes the A-29 more stable in rugged terrain than the AT-6.

Another important design advantage is the A-29's stepped tandem cockpit. This characteristic means greater rear seat visibility, providing improved safety and mission effectiveness.

From a handling and growth perspective, the A-29 provides both superior fly-ability and greater "real estate." Why? Beacause, the A-29 has a longer empennage, or tail section, which increases longitudinal stability and is the cornerstone of the A-29's exceptional bombing accuracy. Further, the A-29 has significant room to grow with regard to integration of future ISR equipment, communications gear, and weapons.

Another key difference between the two aircraft is the A-29's internally-mounted .50 caliber machine guns. The AT-6 carries no weapons in it's native configuration and therefore must give up a vital "hard point" under each wing for a gun pod, exacting a penalty in both payload and performance.

ISR capability is another key requirement. In the case of the A-29 Super Tucano, a fully-integrated EO/IR imaging system is positioned under the nose of the plane for maximum effect. Due to a lack of space and balance, the AT-6 places its thermal imaging system under the cockpit, which leads to degraded effectiveness whenever the plane drops a wing to turn.

AT-6 Scores Hits with Laser-Guided Bombs
During two weeks of testing in late September 2011 and earlier this month at the Barry M. Goldwater Range in Arizona, company pilots dropped four 500-pound GBU-12 Paveway II and four 250-pound GBU-58 Paveway II laser-guided bombs as well as practice munitions. All eight weapons scored hits on their intended targets, Hawker Beechcraft said. The AT-6 also performed .50-caliber machine gun testing against a towed target.

A third phase of weapons testing this fall and winter will involve laser-guided rockets and AGM-114 Hellfire air-to-surface missiles; a fourth phase will introduce the Raytheon Griffin and AIM-9X air-to-air missiles. "I can tell you that I don't think the future of light attack is around weapons such as the GBU-12 500-pound laser-guided bomb or a .50-caliber machine gun,"

The military track record of the A-29 Super Tucano
The A-29 Super Tucano is operational and combat-proven and flying with nations similar to those targeted for the LAS mission.  More than 160 A-29 Super Ts are in use with armed forces around the world.  It has more than 147,000 flight hours and 23,000 combat hours, with no combat losses, and it is certified for more than 130 weapon configurations.

Super Tucano beats out AT-6 for Afghan Light Air Support tender

The US Air Force has awarded Sierra Nevada and partner Embraer a $427 million firm fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract to supply the Afghan air force with 20 Embraer A-29 Super Tucano light attack aircraft. The award brings to a close a long-running battle between Sierra Nevada/Embraer and Beechcraft to secure the Light Air Support tender.

"The A-29 Super Tucano with its proven track record is exactly what's needed for the LAS program where the mission is critical and time is short. We will deliver a superior product, on-time and on-budget," says Taco Gilbert, vice president of integrated tactical solutions for Sierra Nevada's intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance business.

Luiz Carlos Aguiar, president of Embraer Defense and Security, whose company has been trying to secure a foothold in the lucrative US defense-aerospace market, pledges to increase the company's presence inside the United States. "Through this contract with SNC [Sierra Nevada Corporation], we will increase our investment in the United States by creating new jobs and supporting American businesses," he says.

Beechcraft, which bid an AT-6 attack version of its Texan II turboprop trainer, expressed its disappointment at the loss and did not rule out once again protesting the award. Beechcraft, which lost out to Embraer during the original LAS contract award at the end of 2011, had previously sued the US government over that award. Ultimately, the USAF was forced to rerun the tender, but once again the Super Tucano has come out ahead of the AT-6.

"We are disappointed that our proposal was not chosen. We will meet with the USAF for a full debrief of the award and determine our next steps forward at that time," Beechcraft says. "Although the US Air Force did not select the AT-6 Light Attack Aircraft for the Light Air Support program, Beechcraft is committed to advancing the aircraft's capabilities and continues to pursue additional close air support opportunities."

The contract loss comes at a critical time for the Wichita-based airframer. Beechcraft emerged from bankruptcy protection only a week ago, and cited winning the LAS programme as a critical near-term goal.

According, to Sierra Nevada and Embraer, the Super Tucano will be built in Jacksonville, Florida. Embraer's facility at the Jacksonville airport is already being readied for the aircraft's assembly line. "The LAS contract will support more than 1,400 American jobs, reflecting the large US supplier base," the companies say in a joint statement.

Under the terms of the contract, the two companies will supply 20 Embraer A-29 Super Tucano light attack aircraft, one basic aviation training device, one flight training device, six mission planning stations, and six mission debrief systems for the first delivery order. The companies will also have to provide long lead spares parts, flight certification to USAF military type certification standards, and data rights. "The maximum amount that can be ordered under this contract is $950,000,000," the Pentagon contract award reads.

The USAF wants deliveries of these first 20 aircraft completed by April 2015, but follow work could run through 26 February, 2019.

Bronco's : back to life =  OV-10G+ (voor programma : Combat Dragon II)

In recent months, the U.S. special operations community has been quietly evaluating two North American OV-10G+ Bronco light combat aircraft at Naval Air Station Fallon, Nev., and at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev.

The Combat Dragon II program is aimed at demonstrating that a small, turboprop-powered warplane can be effective in "high end/special aviation" missions of the kind encountered in Afghanistan. The program is a follow-on to an earlier demonstration program called Imminent Fury, which used a leased A-29B Super Tucano. The current effort is also called Phase Two of Imminent Fury.

The Combat Dragon requirement for a light armed warplane for use in Afghanistan originated with the combatant commander there – at the time, Gen. Stanley McChrystal – and has been through on-again, off-again incarnations. The program enjoyed strong support from Marine Corps Gen. James N. Mattis, who headed U.S. Central Command from 2010 to 2013. Mattis told the Senate Armed Services Committee in March 2010 that using a robust, complex aircraft like an F-15E Strike Eagle to support troops patrolling rural villages "amounts to overkill." According to a source, the current Combat Dragon II effort is purposely kept low-profile, but basic facts about it are not classified.

Congress tried to kill Combat Dragon II 18 months ago. The Navy's special operations community – specifically, its Irregular Warfare Office headquartered in the Pentagon – was able to resurrect the effort with help from Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC).

Combatant Commander Support

The key to the concept is an inexpensive, simple, nimble combat aircraft capable of long loiter and on-call reconnaissance and attack duty, able to deliver precision ordnance and employ state-of-the-art technology including electro-optical and infrared sensors, laser- and satellite-guided munitions, and encrypted radios and night-vision gear.

This requirement may have its origins in the March 2002 Battle of Takur Ghar, also called the Battle of Roberts Ridge – a part of the larger Operation Anaconda – in which eight U.S. service members were killed and many wounded. Observers say that if an Air Force AC-130 Specter gunship on the scene had been able to stay on target and relay sensor intelligence and deliver precision munitions, the outcome of the battle might have been more favorable for the U.S. side.

Phase One of Imminent Fury used an A-29B (now an official Pentagon designation for the Embraer EMB-314B Super Tucano) borrowed from the company then named Blackwater Worldwide. The same aircraft, now operated by Sierra Nevada Corp., has also been used as the demonstrator for the Air Force's separate Light Air Support program, aimed at equipping the fledgling Afghan air force.

Under the original scheme for Phase Two, also called Combat Dragon II as early as 2010, four airframes – presumably Tucanos, although the Air Tractor AT-802U modified agricultural aircraft and the Beechcraft AT-6 Texan II were also considered as possibilities – would have deployed to Afghanistan to demonstrate their capabilities in real-world operations supporting Navy SEALs with air strikes against al Qaeda and Taliban fighters.

Congress killed the original scheme, in part because it appeared unlikely to favor the Wichita-built AT-6 Texan II supported by the Kansas legislative delegation and in part because lawmakers felt the Pentagon was attempting to slip the program past them without full notice or explanation.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz), a naval aviator, summed up the view of critics on Dec. 16, 2011, when he referred to a spending bill then under consideration: " Of the approximately 100 unrequested and unauthorized additions above the president's budget request found in the Defense Appropriations bill," said McCain, "one of the more concerning is a $20 million allocation for an obscure aircraft program called 'Combat Dragon II.'  Although the name is interesting and sounds threatening enough, you won't find it in the President's Defense Budget request, nor did it appear in the Defense Authorization bill.  So, again, I asked staff to pull the string on it and see what unraveled."

McCain continued: "The purpose of the program is to lease up to four crop-duster-type aircraft [an apparent reference to the AT-802U] and to outfit them with machine gun pods, laser-guided bombs, rockets and air-to-air missiles.  So, I directed my staff to see if this alleged requirement was justified and properly vetted and approved within the Pentagon by a Joint Urgent Operational Needs Statement, since it was not in the administration[s budget request.  Once again the answer was a resounding 'No' – there is NO urgent operational requirement for this type of aircraft." The capital letters appear in the transcript as provided by McCain's office.

"After turning over the right rocks, we found that this aircraft lease will not be competitively awarded – shades of the infamous tanker lease program – and as such is effectively earmarked for a particular aircraft manufacturer who has the corner on this particularly obscure part of the aviation market." This could be a reference to either the A-29B or the AT-6.

A different kind of criticism came in an interview for this article with former Pentagon analyst Pierre Sprey, widely credited as the force behind the A-10 Thunderbolt II.

Sprey doesn't think a program aimed explicitly at Afghanistan will get funded when "we're leaving that country and getting out of that war." Sprey believes present-day technology would enable a vastly improved, cheaper A-10 type of aircraft that would be suitable for all intensities of warfare.

"Piddling around with light attack is not the way to help out our troops," Sprey told Defense Media Network. "In any case, a 'light attack aircraft' isn't going to happen in part because we're leaving Afghanistan next year and mostly because the Air Force despises the mission. We could do much better today if we developed a smaller, hotter, more lethal and survivable version of the A-10 and put the emphasis on 'close support' rather than on 'light attack.' Our troops need and deserve a true close support aircraft more than ever."

Revived and Re-funded

After Congress deleted $17 million from the plan to send four aircraft to Afghanistan, Pentagon officials obtained permission to re-channel funds from other programs and revived Combat Dragon II – not in the combat zone but stateside, at Fallon and Nellis – with a pair of OV-10G+ Broncos. The effort is now dubbed a Limited Objective Evaluation (LOE) and the current funds apparently come from Air Force Special Operations Command, although the OV-10G+ aircraft are reportedly being flown by Navy aircrews.

The OV-10G+ represents the latest incarnation of a Vietnam-era aircraft design that was meant from the outset for forward air control and counter-insurgency.

The two aircraft in the Combat Dragon II program (bureau numbers 155481 and 155492) are among about a dozen former Marine Corps OV-10D+ models that were previously operated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. The author of this article flew in one of them and found the observers' back-seat position to be quite noisy and to have poor visibility. When the ATF scaled down its plans for an air arm in the late 1990s, its OV-10D+ aircraft were turned over to the Department of State Air Wing, which uses them for counter-narcotics operations in Latin America. The unit is also known as the INL Air Wing, named for State's Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement. The two aircraft then went to NASA and eventually became part of the Combat Dragon II program.

In recent years, this batch of about a dozen Broncos underwent various upgrades, with three modified to OV-10G+ standard (reprising a letter suffix that was used earlier for a very different OV-10G version intended for South Korean forces). The upgrade was accomplished by Marsh Aviation in at Falcon Field in Mesa, Ariz., and was done initially for the Colombian Air Force.

The OV-10G+ version now being evaluated has the same Garrett T76G-420/421 turboprops used on the OV-10D, but with four-bladed Hartzell propellers. The OV-10G+ also has an off-the-shelf sensor turret.

Closeted Combat Dragon II

Apart from the basics, no details are available on how the Combat Dragon II program is proceeding or what officials expect when current, AFSOC-generated funding expires on September 30. The two Broncos were recently observed on the East Ramp, also called the Atlantic Aviation Ramp, at Reno/Tahoe International Airport, returning from participation in an exercise called Jaded Thunder at Pahrump, Nev. Jaded Thunder is a joint effort that simulates engaging an enemy in an urban environment. It has been held periodically using a variety of special-purpose military aircraft, including the Pilatus PC-12 and the AC-130.

So why is the seemingly routine Combat Dragon II program kept so low-key? It's easy to speculate that the program would encounter problems with the Kansas congressional delegation (On June 13, Kansas's Beechcraft announced that it would exhibit the AT-6 and "defense, special mission and mission support capabilities" at this summer's Paris Air Show). A source told Defense Media Network the low-key approach is happening because those on the Navy side of the joint effort feel it's best to "keep a low profile, quietly go about doing good work, and keep the bosses informed."

Production AT-6 aircraft makes first flight

The first production Beechcraft AT-6 light attack aircraft made a ceremonial first flight on 20 August in Wichita, Kansas.

The single-engined 1,600shp (1,190kW) Pratt & Whitney PT6 turboprop aeroplane took to the air at about 10:30 local time with test pilot Lionel Alford at the controls. "It flies great," he says.

The aircraft was loaded with a pair of 66 gal (250 litres) drop tanks, two inert GBU-58 laser-guided bombs and two LAU-131 seven-shot rocket launchers. The AT-6 was also carrying a L-3 Wescam Mx-15Di electro-optical infrared camera.

Although a production aircraft, it is a company-owned asset. Beechcraft has not secured an order for the type.

When asked why the company would fly the first flight with such a heavy load, Derek Hess, the company's senior vice-president for business development, says: "Because it's so easy."

Meanwhile, Hess says that the company is continuing to look at improvements to the AT-6. The aircraft recently demonstrated air-to-air gunnery with .50 caliber machine guns and the potential exists to employ Raytheon AIM-9 Sidewinders to counter certain aerial threats.

Russ Bartlett, president of Beechcraft's defence business, says that the AT-6 could incorporate a Lockheed F-35-style large area display in the future.

Beechcraft president Bill Boisture says that while the company has not secured a customer for the AT-6 yet, he expects to sign a customer for the aircraft before the end of 2013.

Beechcraft projects that the market for a light attack aircraft could exceed 500 units over 10 years. There are 26 US allies that could use an aircraft such as the AT-6, Boisture adds. Most of these potential customers would be in Africa, South America and the Middle East.

"We're going to sell a lot of these airplanes," Boisture says.

Africa's first home-grown aircraft

Many aircraft on display at this year's Africa Aerospace & Defence exhibition in South Africa - and those flying in African skies - where manufactured elsewhere.
But South Africa's Paramount Group is determined to change that, bucking the trend by designing and producing aircraft on African soil.
The BBC's Matthew Davies has been finding out more about the Advanced High-Performance Reconnaissance Light Aircraft (Ahrlac) for Africa Business Report.

The aircraft will be supplied in partnership with Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) as the prime contractor for the aircraft. No financial details will be published.

The Embraer EMB 314 – also named A-29 Super Tucano – is a turboprop aircraft designed for light attack, counter-insurgency, close air support, aerial reconnaissance missions in low threat environments, as well as providing pilot training. It is currently in service with the air forces of Angola, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Indonesia, and Mauritania. The A-29 has been ordered by Senegal and the United States. February 27, 2013, the U.S. Air Force announced that it has selected the Embraer Defense and Security´s A-29 Super Tucano for its Light Air Support program.

Tier 1 aerospace armour company

Steen Tanderup, managing director of TenCate Advanced Armour EMEA states: "Embraer's decision for supplier selection in this major high-end aerospace aircraft confirms that TenCate Advanced Armour has developed into a fully accepted tier 1 aerospace armour company. The EN9100 certified facility of TenCate in France is providing the design, development and production of dedicated high quality aerospace ballistic protection for a number of high-profile helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft projects. This production plant is at the required level and will further evolve in the near future. In this way TenCate will contribute to increase the protection of aircrews and aircraft platforms in hostile environments".

TenCate Advanced Armour as prime contractor for the armour and local partner Aerotron Brazil are working closely together with Embraer in the Joint Development Phase to finalize the design and prototypes of the ballistic protection according to the challenging time schedule, weight and performance requirements for the Super Tucano military aircraft program.

Kwetsbaarder of juist minder?

Citaat
The RMP missile uses a two color, infrared and ultraviolet, detector and advanced algorithms to help acquire targets. This advanced capability allows the missile to effectively discriminate between targets, flares, and background clutter thereby preventing false engagements. Unlike the basic Stinger missile, the RMP has the capability to track and destroy high-performance, fixed-wing aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles, and cruise missiles in clutter and at tactical ranges.

FIRST US MADE A-29 SUPER TUCANO FOR AFGHAN USE

Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) and Embraer Defense & Security on Thursday 25 September 2014 presented the first US-built A-29 Super Tucano light air support aircraft in a roll-out ceremony with the US Air Force and government officials. The aircraft is the first of 20 that are being delivered to the USAF for its Light Air Support (LAS) program to support stability in Afghanistan. On Friday 26 September, it was flown to Moody Air Force Base, Georgia, where training will be done.

In February 2013, the US Air Force awarded the LAS contract to SNC to supply 20 Embraer A-29 Super Tucano aircraft as well as ground training devices, pilot and maintenance training and logistic support. The aircraft will be used to provide light air support, reconnaissance and training capabilities to the Afghanistan military. In March 2013, Embraer opened a facility in Jacksonville, Florida, to produce the LAS aircraft and to date has hired 72 employees. The facility in Jacksonville performs pre-equipping, mechanical assembly, structural assembly, systems installation and testing, and flight testing of A-29 aircraft.

The Super Tucano is a light air support turboprop aircraft with advanced training capabilities currently used by nine air forces in Africa, Asia Pacific and Latin America. After more than ten years in action, the Super Tucano has gained an excellent performance record: over 230,000 flight hours and 31,000 combat hours. Embraer has received more than 210 firm orders and has delivered more than 170 aircraft.

First Super Tucano Accepted Into U.S. Air Force

After years of bitter competitions, Embraer has finally established a U.S. foothold for production of defense systems stateside with the rollout of its first A-29 Super Tucano for sale to the U.S. Air Force.

Embraer is teamed with Sierra Nevada Corp. to deliver 20 Super Tucanos to the service, which will then transfer them to Afghan forces. The team is also training U.S. instructor pilots and maintainers, who will provide training to Afghan forces. Training in Afghanistan is slated for early next year.

This was the company's first successful venture into the U.S. defense market. Embraer previously won a contract with Lockheed Martin to supply ERJ 145s for intelligence aircraft; the deal cratered once it became evident the platforms were too small to contain the equipment required for the service.

The company was also the winner of a 2011 competition with the Super Tucano for what the Air Force calls the Light Air Support (LAS) program. However, rival Beechcraft protested, having been dismissed from the competition, and the service ultimately conducted another duel. Sierra Nevada and Embraer again won and, after yet another protest, the team was pronounced the victor.

Embraer has dedicated a facility in Jacksonville, Florida, to the Super Tucano final assembly work for the U.S. Air Force; work will also continue on its line in Brazil for other customers.

"It is a natural thing to incorporate that into the Jacksonville operation," said Gary Spulak, president of Embraer Aircraft Holding Inc. Parts for the A-29 are supplied by more than 100 companies in 21 states and "instead of shipping U.S. parts to Brazil for assembly, they ship to Florida" now for the U.S. aircraft, says Taco Gilbert, vice president of Sierra Nevada's tactical intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance business.

The deal for $427.5 million – covering 20 aircraft as well as training, support and spares – was anticipated to be the first tranche of work. However, amid constant protests from Beechcraft and declining budgets, the Air Force has not opted for a second buy. But team officials expect the Afghan forces to buy the systems in the future.

They say there is a global market as high as $3.5 billion that could be tapped for less wealthy nations seeking simple armed support for border protection as well as wealthy nations – such as the U.S. – in need of an inexpensive complement to its costly F-35s and F-22s.

This is a pitch also being made by Textron AirLand, with its newly designed Scorpion, a twin-engine jet aircraft aimed at the light-attack and fast-jet trainer market. Gilbert said the A-29's historical operating cost is $1,000 per hour; Scorpion's is advertised at $3,000.

Embraer's plant opened in February, and the first A-29 has already been accepted by the Air Force. Eight aircraft are on the line in various stages of final assembly, Spulak said. The final aircraft is slated for delivery in the summer of 2015.

The initial deliveries were slated for late 2013, but slipped due to the Beechcraft protest. Each aircraft requires up to 80 days in final assembly, Gilbert says.

Meanwhile, Spulak and Gilbert are optimistic that foreign sales will emerge. They declined to discuss interested parties due to customer privacy concerns. Because the Brazilian assembly line is continuing work, a lull in activity in Florida will not cause an interruption in the supply chain, Spulak says.

Taken zoals gunship, intell, mpa

IOMAX offers Archangel light attack turboprop to the Philippines

(https://www.defensieforum.nl/Forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.janes.com%2Fimages%2Fassets%2F800%2F38800%2F1522226_-_main.jpg&hash=551b33c8def2334dfbe30bb73d3ad003ea34f7b2)
Artist's concept of the IOMAX Archangel ISR and light strike aircraft modified with a bubble canopy, ejection seats, and speed fairings. The aircraft is currently being offered to the Philippines and the United Arab Emirates

IOMAX has offered its Archangel Block 3 Border Patrol Aircraft (BPA) to the Philippine Air Force (PAF) as a replacement for its ageing Rockwell OV-10 Bronco counterinsurgency fleet, IHS Jane's was told on 2 June.

The US defence company has submitted a bid to the Philippine government, in which it is pitching the Archangel as a replacement for the PAF's nine remaining OV-10s, which were acquired second-hand in the 1990s, IOMAX CEO Ron Howard disclosed during a visit to the company's North Carolina headquarters.

"IOMAX has previously done signals intelligence in Southeast Asia, and so we know the region. The Philippine mission is very well suited to the Archangel," he said.

The Philippine requirement was formally launched in mid-May, when the Department of National Defense (DND) issued tender documents to acquire six close air support aircraft and an accompanying logistics support package for PHP4.968 billion (USD114 million).

In its documents, the DND noted that the selected bidder must have had prior experience of such programmes over the previous decade, and that the selected platform should already be in service with the armed forces of the country of origin or by the military of at least two other countries.

Although the Archangel BPA is regarded by some (the US Department of Defense included) as being an essentially new platform, it is in fact the third iteration (hence the Block 3 designation) of the Block 1 and Block 2 AT-802 that IOMAX developed and supplied to the United Arab Emirates (and which it still supports). Also, with the Block 1 also now in service with Jordan, the Archangel does fit the criteria for selection as laid down by the DND.

While the DND did not publically disclose aircraft specifications, IHS Jane's understands that they have been written up with the Embraer EMB-314 Super Tucano in mind, with requirements that it be equipped with retractable undercarriage and ejector seats, among other things.

The Archangel currently features neither of these, but Howard told IHS Jane's that IOMAX has done studies with Martin-Baker on the feasibility of replacing the current crash-resistant seating and roll-cage with twin ejection-seats and bubble canopy, and that this is perfectly doable (the United Arab Emirates is also said to be interested in the canopy for a potential follow-on order of aircraft, but not the ejection-seats). As for retractable undercarriage, Howard said the mission did not require it, and the weight penalties and rough field limitations would outweigh any benefits over the current fixed undercarriage, and so this would not be offered.

As retractable undercarriage is not being offered as an option, Howard said the company's designers were looking at a number of aerodynamic improvements to the Archangel that would help it close the speed gap from its current 180 kt cruise speed to bring it closer to the 220 kt of platforms such as the Super Tucano.

From spinner to tail, these enhancements include the option of an enhanced propeller with a scimitar-style composite blade; a sleeker nose profile; angling the exhaust rearwards to provide about 200 lb of additional thrust; speed fairings on the main undercarriage and wheel struts; remodelled wing roots and tips; blending the rear of the cockpit to the tail section to reduce buffeting and drag; remodelled tail and stabiliser roots and tips; and a more generally cleaned-up fuselage, with as few protruding parts as possible. According to IOMAX's chief scientist, Ray Nielson, who is leading this improvement effort, these modifications should increase the aircraft's cruise speed to about 210 kt.

Even so, Howard was keen to note that speed is not everything, and that rival platforms had sacrificed much in terms of payload and range/endurance in order to go faster. With a typical mission profile of 175 kt outbound to a range of 1,350 n miles, six hours on station, and 175 kt inbound to base, and all with a maximum gross take-off weight of 6,715 kg, the Archangel can cover more of the Philippine's area of operations with a greater weapon load than any of its competitors. At just USD8 million per aircraft (without options), the Archangel is also cheaper than many of its rivals ( IHS Jane's All the World's Aircraft gives the Super Tucano a unit price of USD12-13 million).

With the DND's tender documents now released, all bids must be submitted by 11 June, with the selected platform expected to be with the PAF 18 months after contract signature. Besides the Archangel and Super Tucano, other platforms expected to compete include the Beechcraft AT-6 Texan II, and perhaps even the Pilatus PC-21

IOMAX flies Archangel Border Patrol Aircraft prototype

On its maiden flight in mid-July the Archangel exceeded all expectations, according to the IOMAX CEO. The weapons have been computer-generated in this image to give an indication of a typical load.

The engineering, manufacturing, and development (EMD) prototype IOMAX Archangel Block 3 Border Patrol Aircraft (BPA) recently made its maiden flight.

The turboprop intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) and light attack platform flew from Thrush Aircraft's production facility in Georgia, where it was manufactured, to IOMAX's Mooresville facility in North Carolina in mid-July.

IOMAX CEO Ron Howard said the aircraft "exceeded our expectations on all counts" during the transit. A series of flight trials will now take place at Mooresville, and the company expects to finalise a deal with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for 24 aircraft in the near future.

Built around the Thrush S2R-660 (also designated the 710) crop sprayer, the Archangel is the latest iteration of IOMAX's Block 1 and Block 2 AT-802 turboprop that is currently fielded by the UAE and Jordan (six Emirati aircraft were donated to Jordan in 2013).

(https://www.defensieforum.nl/Forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.janes.com%2Fimages%2Fassets%2F680%2F42680%2Fp1567528.jpg&hash=5c4a68d1585e0235923767656a3932021fe5360a)
Based on the Thrush S2R-660 (also designated the 710) crop sprayer, the Archangel is nearly physically identical to the Block 1 and Block 2 AT-802 platforms fielded by the UAE and Jordan. However, unlike the earlier platforms, it was built from the outset as a dedicated military aircraft.

Compared to the AT-802, the Archangel features a 'cleaned-up' fuselage for less drag, and will be fitted with speed fairings and other aerodynamic enhancements to help improve performance.

The Archangel's sensor fit comprises an electro-optic/infrared (EO/IR) turret housed on a pod that can be modified to carry a synthetic aperture radar, ground-moving target indicator radar, and datalinks, while its weapons fit includes a podded GAU-19B 12.7 mm (.50 calibre) Gatling gun, GBU-12/58 precision-guided bombs, AGM-114 Hellfire missiles, and Cirit guided rockets.

Although modelled on the S2R-660, the Archangel is not a converted crop sprayer, a point that Howard was keen to stress. "It can be factually stated that this 'modified' S2R T660 aircraft is a first, one-of-a-kind platform. It is the first airplane off an agricultural assembly line that is designed specifically from the ground up to be employed as an ISR/weapons platform. It is neither capable of nor suited for crop spraying. So to say it's basically a crop duster or was ever a crop duster is inaccurate. We built a warbird."

With the UAE expected to sign for the Archangel shortly, IOMAX has also offered the aircraft to the Philippines and Turkey, and has received interest from countries such as Angola, Niger, and the Ivory Coast, among others.

Jordanie
Jordan is to arm the six IOMAX Border Patrol Aircraft (BPA) Block 1 precision strike turboprop aircraft that were gifted to the country by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2013, a senior company official has confirmed to IHS Jane's .

This new capability will allow the BPA aircraft to carry six GBU-58 250 lb precision-guided bombs and/or six AGM-114 Hellfire missiles. Additionally, precision strike weapons training will begin immediately for the Royal Jordanian Air Force (RJAF). The intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR)/weapons training and weapons integration will be completed with operational employment of the platforms to occur by the end of the third quarter of 2014.

When the Block I IOMAX aircraft were first donated to Jordan by the UAE in the latter half of 2013, they were handed over in an unarmed configuration to be used purely for ISR duties. However, with all six aircraft now operational with the RJAF, the US government has approved IOMAX to proceed with weaponising these platforms.

.....

Once armed, the six BPAs will join the RJAF's two Airbus CN235-100M gunships, and six Cessna C208B Grand Caravan turboprop command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (C4ISR) platforms (and which may have also been armed with Hellfire missiles),

UAE
While the Jordanian aircraft will not be equipped with a gun at this time, IOMAX plans to integrate the GAU-19B 12.7 mm (.50 calibre) Gatling gun pod onto the Block III aircraft currently being developed for the UAE and other potential export customers; dubbed Archangel. The gun is being supported in the UAE by a number of former US Air Force Fairchild-Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots who are now advising the UAE government.

IOMAX has been in discussions with Martin-Baker with regard to fitting ejection-seats in the Block 3 Archangel. This will require some remodelling of the cockpit and the fitting of a bubble canopy, and while the UAE has requested ejection-seats as an option for the Block 3, it is also considering the bubble canopy option to enhance crew visibility.

IHS Jane's understands that as well as donating six of its original 24 (10 Block 1 and 14 Block 2) Border Patrol aircraft to Jordan, the UAE is still operating 14 BPAs and intends to increase its fleet to 38 aircraft by 2016.

First unveiled at the Paris Airshow in 2013, the prototype Block 3 Archangel Border Patrol Aircraft (BPA) is based on the Thrush S2R-660 (also designated the 710), as opposed to the Air Tractor 802 aircraft.

Eind jaren 80 ontwikkelde men de Directional Infra Red Counter Measures (DIRCM).

Lopend naar huis A.J.

Blablabla IR...

BOEING WILL ARM SOUTH AFRICA'S WEIRD PLANE

AHRLAC AND LOADED

South Africa's AHRLAC is a weird bird. With a narrow, high body, and stadium seating for the pilot and sensor operator, it looks like a rough draft for an F-4 phantom. A pusher prop and slightly forward-swept wings seem like an aviation mistake from the First World War. Built as a bushwacking scout, able to operate from rough fields without runways, AHRLAC is an odd drone alternative, a peopled plane built to do a drone's job. Now, thanks to a deal Paramount (AHRLAC's maker) struck with Boeing, it's going to get weapons.

This weird plane will soon get weapons. Probably normal weapons, maybe weird weapons too.

AHRLAC's top speed is a modest 310 mph, about the same as a Reaper drone and about twice that of a standard Huey helicopter. With an expected endurance of over 7 hours, it's better suited for long patrols than helicopters, maybe even at a lower cost than sophisticated drones. From Defense News:

According to the agreement, Boeing will develop an integrated mission system for the aircraft enabling ISR and light strike missions for the AHRLAC safety & security, and military variants. This militarized version will be known as Mwari, a name taken from South African mythology regarded by some tribes as an omnipotent, all-seeing being. The cost of the aircraft was estimated to be under $10 million by [Paramount Group's Executive Chairman Ivor] Ichikowitz in 2011, however he was not able to state a price of the aircraft with the integrated Boeing systems. "There are some customers which will require simpler systems but there are other markets which will require the sophisticated mission systems provided by Boeing. It is our objective to tackle these markets together, " Ichikowitz said.

Even with sensors and weapons from Boeing, AHRLAC won't be winning any dogfights. Instead, it will do the messy boring work of low-intensity wars and patrols, hunting for insurgents, poachers, and other violent armed nonstate groups big enough to warrant a response but not big enough to carry anti-air weapons. AHRLAC may not replace the A-10 any time soon (or ever), but for the people on the receiving end of their weapons, that won't matter much.

AAD: Paramount unveils military version of AHRLAC

South African defence contractor Paramount showed two sides of its AHRLAC single prop pusher - literally. At its exhibit, the left half of its single prototype example was presented in its recently-announced Mwari militarised version, with the other half in civil, surveillance guise.

Paramount, which flew the aircraft on the 10min flight to Waterkloof from its nearby Wonderboom airport facility ahead of the opening day, believes there is a promising market for both variants, and - while it has not revealed any customers - is showing its faith in the programme by pressing on with the construction of a new dedicated factory at Wonderboom, able to produce around two aircraft per month initially.

Paramount, a majority shareholder in AHRLAC Holdings, which produces the twin-cockpit aircraft, first flew the AHRLAC in 2014. It is working on the second airframe, which is likely to fly early in 2017 and will be the certificated design. The principle behind the Pratt & Whitney Canada PW600-powered aircraft is that a range of equipment, from sensors to a cannon, can be "plugged" into 25 separate hard points, says Paramount.

Although Boeing earlier this year agreed with Paramount to offer an advanced mission system on the militarised version, Paramount insists that both variants can be offered "completely ITAR [US International Traffic in Arms Regulations] free".

Although much of its defence business has traditionally been with African states, Paramount is pitching the AHRLAC - the first indigenously-produced mainstream manned aircraft in South Africa since the Denel Rooivalk attack helicopter - globally.

"We have produced an aircraft to the highest engineering standards, with the first world as our target," says founder and executive chairman Ivor Ichikowitz, "This will be for sale into the US, Europe and India. We have enough indication of serious intent for us to be taking these markets seriously."

He says that Paramount's advantage is that it is nimble enough to develop products much quicker than many Western defence firms. "This has been privately funded from concept to production five years. We are conducting a military-level flight test programme at a fraction of what it would cost in Europe or the US."

France receives 17 Pilatus PC-21 training aircraft
Jan 5, 2017

Pilatus Aircraft Ltd is delighted to announce the signing of three PC-21 fleet orders by end of December 2016, for a total of 21 PC-21s, of which 17 are for the French Air Force and two each for the Royal Jordanian Air Force and QinetiQ, a British company which operates the "Empire Test Pilots' School". Together, these orders are worth over 300 million Swiss francs and will help to ensure jobs at Stans.

Babcock France and Dassault Aviation have signed a partnership which would initially materialize in the delivery of the French "FOMEDEC" training contract with the creation of a joint company under the leadership of Babcock France.

Following a competitive bid process, the France's Direction Générale de l'Armement (DGA) has awarded Babcock France with the FOMEDEC contract to provide and maintain a training platform and related services for the French Air Force (Armée de l'Air).

This 11-year contract will provide new training aircraft (Pilatus PC 21), related simulators (CAE) and modernised training facilities for the training of fighter jet crews to be performed by the Air Force itself at the Cognac Air Base. The first aircraft will be delivered in March 2018.

Archie Bethel, Chief Executive of Babcock International Group, said:

"We are delighted that our French company will be working as a key support partner on this major French defence contract. The project will draw on our expertise in the European aviation industry and our experience of delivering long-term military flight training programmes. It is also a great satisfaction to engage a partnership with such a recognized aviation leader as Dassault. We look forward to working with the French Air Force over the next decade."

Eric Trappier, Chairman and CEO of Dassault Aviation, said:

"As the manufacturer of the Rafale, the spearhead of the French fighters, and of its advanced training companion, the Alpha Jet, Dassault Aviation bolsters this new project with Babcock, an outstanding provider of support environments, for the benefit of the French Ministry of Defence. With this programme, we are very proud to keep on our enduring participation to the training of the French fighter pilots. Since 1959, our company has been the provider of the French fighter training cursus."

Argentina procures T-6C+ Texan II turboprop trainer and light-attack aircraft  (24 stuks T-6C+ voor $300 miljoen USD )

Argentina has procured four Beechcraft T-6C+ Texan II turboprop trainer and light-attack aircraft under a contract valued at USD88.2 million, it was announced on 25 April.

The contract, which was awarded by the US Department of Defense (DoD) under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) scheme, will see the aircraft delivered to the Argentine Air Force (Fuerza Aérea Argentina: FAA) by 30 April 2018. Included in the deal are maintenance and pilot training, as well as interim contractor support for maintenance.

The contract follows US State Department approval for the sale of up to 24 T-6C+ aircraft that was announced in August 2016. At that time, it was said the estimated USD300 million procurement deal was needed to replace the FAA's Embraer EMB-312 Tucanos, only a handful of which are still in an airworthy condition.

According to the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), the proposed sale would "revitalise Argentina's capability to train its pilots and fulfill border control missions, especially along its porous northern border. The Argentine Air Force will use the enhanced capability to redevelop a professional pilot corps and as a deterrent to illicit activity."

According to Jane's All the World's Aircraft: Development and Production , the T-6 has a top speed of 270 kt, an endurance of three hours at maximum cruise speed, a range of 1,574 km, and a service ceiling of 35,000 ft.

The T-6C features an integrated 'glass' cockpit and advanced avionics, including head-up display, up-front control panel, three-colour multifunction displays, and HOTAS (hands on throttle and stick) controls. It differs from the standard T-6B in having wings that are plumbed for the carriage of auxiliary fuel tanks. The enhanced T-6C+ variant procured by Argentina (and previously Mexico) is also capable of carrying up to a payload of 1,415 kg of external stores.

IOMAX negotiating Archangel sale to UAE, upgrading AT-802s for Jordan and Egypt

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is in the final stage of negotiations with IOMAX for the sale of 12 Archangel Block 2 Border Patrol Aircraft (BPA) with the option of 12 more, Jane's was told on 22 June.

The direct commercial sale (DCS) will see the UAE Air Force and Air Defence (UAE AF & AD) receive the additional aircraft to augment the 24 Block 1 Archangels it began receiving in 2015. These original 24 Archangels were procured to replace the UAE's 24 IOMAX AT-802s that have since largely been donated to allied countries.

"Using self-funded [research] and customer input over the past seven years, IOMAX is set to produce the Block 2 Archangel, which will allow the UAE AF & AD to further expand its mission scope," IOMAX told Jane's .

Paris Air Show: Kenya close to 'Longsword' contract
(https://www.defensieforum.nl/Forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fmms.businesswire.com%2Fmedia%2F20170615005636%2Fen%2F592076%2F5%2FAT-802L_Longsword.jpg&hash=f5d8b40826ff251b04b7ca3a2b32b070a6f2ff3b)

L3 Technologies expects to receive a contract to supply 12 new AT-802L 'Longsword' light-attack aircraft to Kenya later this year, after an FMS case was approved in January.

According to officials speaking to Shephard, the firmed up government-to-government contract will then be followed by weapon release trials supported by the US Air Force for military qualifications.

Joseph Siniscalchi, senior vice president, business development at L3 Aerospace Systems, told Shephard that the company will work with the USAF's Seek Eagle office to qualify weapons on the platform in line with the first customer contract expected 'in the fall'.

'We have some [potential orders] that are pending that we expect will be done soon,' he said.

Siniscalchi said that there were 'several' other potential orders being discussed right now, including in the Middle East, North Africa, Asia and South America.

The aircraft will also take part in the US Air Force's OA-X trials, which will see the service trial several aircraft that could eventually lead to the acquisition of a fleet of low-cost, light-attack aircraft.

In January it was announced that the US State Department had approved a $418 million FMS deal for 12 AT-802Ls to Kenya, which are planned to supplement the country's ageing, and increasingly expensive to operate, F-5 fighter fleet.

The sale has proved controversial, however, with at least one US lawmaker calling for an investigation into the FMS case over 'irregularities'. Unsurprisingly, the lawmaker in question represents the state where the IOMAX Archangel is built, an aircraft sold to the UAE and very similar to the Longsword.

'The US Air Force and US government did not have any dealings in the selection process, so therefore the statement that we misrepresented the capability really had no basis in fact,' said Siniscalchi.

The Longsword aircraft is an Air Tractor AT-802 cropduster at heart, but has been heavily-modified to perform ISR and strike missions.

Development of the aircraft has been led by L3's Aerospace Systems along with Air Tractor for supply of the aircraft. Integration work is carried out by L3's Platform Integration division in Waco, Texas.

Four aircraft have already been sold and delivered to Jordan in a non-weaponised ISR configuration under a foreign military sales contract.

'We chose this aircraft for its ease of maintenance and its ability to operate in harsh environment,' said Jim Wise, business development at L3 Platform Integration. 'And it's the largest aircraft in its class...it can carry a lot of stuff.'

The aircraft is 16,000lb and has four weapon hard points per wing, with the aircraft at the Paris Air Show displaying a loadout consisting of Hellfire missiles, GBU-12 Paveways, machine gun pods, 2.75" rocket pods and Mk82 unguided bombs on the centreline.

L3 has already completed drop trials with the GBU-12 Paveway and Mk82 general-purpose bomb last summer.

'Even with that bomb load, we can get three hours out of the aircraft which is similar to a Super Tucano with a much smaller weapons load,' Wise explained. 'As far as that persistence, we'll still be there as [our competitors] are going home for gas.'

In addition, the aircraft has a MX-15 EO/IR sensor, a comprehensive communications suite, an integrated mission operator station with L3 ForceX Widow mission management system and the Thales-developed Scorpion HMD.

Longsword also comes with stronger wings, self-sealing fuel tanks, armoured cockpit and armoured fuel lines.

Embraer pitches Super Tucano to Europe

Embraer is looking to secure its first European customer for the EMB-314/A-29 Super Tucano light attack turboprop, a company official said on 7 June.

Speaking at the SMi Close Air Support (CAS) conference in London, Embraer's vice president for sales in Europe and North Africa, Simon Johns, said that the Super Tucano could provide European air arms with a lower-cost alternative to jets and helicopters for many of their missions.

Embraer also pointed to nations like Ukraine that lack funding for a new multirole combat aircraft, and which would find the Super Tucano an affordable option that would add considerable combat power. Furthermore, the Super Tucano's ability to operate close to the frontline makes it agile and flexible enough to respond to events in a timely fashion.

As part of this drive into Europe, Embraer is offering some enhancements to the baseline aircraft. As Johns noted, the changes "include the integration of dedicated anti-tank munitions, like the Lockheed Martin [AGM-114] Hellfire missile, which [is] already in the roadmap of the aircraft, as well as laser guided rockets.

"There are scenarios where the Super Tucano, operating in a battlespace with a benign or semi-degraded air defence system on the opposing side, could perform the tank-killing mission that has largely been left to helicopter gunships until now."

Pursuant to being equipped to perform these missions, the Super Tucano now has a radar warning receiver and missile approach warning system in development for an increased threat environment in the European theatre.

Calidus Unveils Giant Attack Aircraft

One of the big surprises at the Dubai Airshow proved to be the public unveiling of the mock-up of the Calidus B-350, a large turboprop-powered attack aircraft. Equipped with 12 underwing hardpoints, the B-350 can carry a huge array of weaponry, ranging from precision-guided bombs to air-to-air missiles for self-defense.

The B-350 follows on from the Novaer-designed Calidus B-250, which appeared at Dubai in 2017 and is on show again this year. The much larger B-350 takes the turboprop trainer/attack/counter-insurgency aircraft to a whole new level. Power comes from a 2,600-shp Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127 turboprop and the wingspan extends more than 50 feet. Maximum takeoff weight is in the region of 9 tonnes. As well as the 12 hardpoints, the B-350 has under-fuselage carriage points for sensors, including a large multi-sensor targeting/surveillance turret, and radar/electronic warfare antennas.

The plethora of wing stores and powerful engine have drawn comparisons with the legendary Douglas Skyraider of Vietnam war fame. However, the two-seat B-350 is a thoroughly 21st-century aircraft. Like the B-250, it is mostly constructed of carbon-fiber composites.

Powered by a 1,600-shp Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-68, the earlier B-250 is also an advanced/weapons trainer and light attack platform akin to the AT-6 Wolverine and AT-29 Super Tucano. It has seven hardpoints for up to 3,960 pounds of stores and can carry an electro-optic/infrared targeting turret. At the 2019 Dubai Airshow, the UAE announced an order for 24.

Calidus is also marketing the B-250T, a dedicated trainer version with a 950-shp PT6A-62 engine. The company markets the aircraft as both a basic and advanced training vehicle, with virtual training functions such as radar and sensor simulation, simulated air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons, and night vision goggle compatibility offered to meet advanced training requirements.
