Sea-Air-Space 2019: BAE Systems displays its latest innovations

BAE Systems is presently exhibiting its latest innovations, from 6 to 8 May, at the U.S. Navy League's annual Sea-Air-Space Exposition, which is the largest maritime exposition in the United States.

Among the products and services BAE Systems is displaying during the exhibition are the APKWS Laser-guided Rocket, a prototype of an Electromagnetic (EM) Railgun, Hypervelocity Projectiles, Electronic Warfare technologies, Long Range Anti-Ship Missiles (LRASM), the Mk 45 Mod 4 Naval Gun System, the Striker II Digital Helmet, Vulcano Precision-guided munitions, and its ship repair solutions.

The APKWS guidance kit transforms an unguided 70mm rocket into a precision-guided rocket, giving warfighters a low-cost surgical strike capability. It redefines precision by hitting the target with pinpoint accuracy and minimal collateral damage.

BAE Systems is also the leader of the development of the Office of Naval Research (ONR) Electromagnetic (EM) Railgun innovative naval prototype. This fascinating technology, which uses high-power electromagnetic energy instead of explosive chemical propellants to launch projectiles farther and faster than any previous system, is currently in Phase 2 of the program. During this phase, the company will advance the railgun by maturing the launcher and pulsed power from a single shot operation to a multi-shot capability. Auto-loading and thermal management systems will also be incorporated. BAE received a $34.5M contract from ONR in 2013 to pursue these efforts.

As for the Hypervelocity Projectiles (HVPs), these are a next-generation, common, low drag, guided projectiles capable of executing multiple missions for a number of gun systems (Navy 5-Inch, 155mm systems, and future EM railguns). BAE is currently developing an HVP for the U.S. Armed Forces.

South Korea authorises new destroyers and submarines

The South Korean government, via the Defense Project Promotion Committee, formally approved plans for future Aegis destroyers and additional submarines during a meeting on 30 April.

The Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) announced that the Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN) would receive three new destroyers of the Gwanggaeto the Great Ⅲ class by 2028. A budget of KRW3.9 trillion ($3.3 billion) has been allocated for this trio of warships.

These vessels have been designed by Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), via a contract let in May 2016.

One feature of the new KDX-III destroyers is an upgraded missile launch system allowing them to fire interceptors against ballistic missiles, in conjunction with the Aegis combat system. They could be the first South Korean vessels to carry SM-3 missiles, and directed-energy weapons remain a possibility too. DAPA said that their detection, tracking and anti-submarine warfare capabilities will be enhanced.

This class represents a second batch of destroyers following on from three Sejong the Great (KDX-III) guided-missile destroyers commissioned between 2008 and 2012 (pictured above). HHI built the first and third vessels, while Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) constructed the second one.

The second batch of KDX-III destroyers will likely see the two shipbuilders sharing the workload as well. The new destroyers are needed to respond to maritime disputes and to participate in peacekeeping operations, DAPA said.

Turning to the submarines, the next batch of three KSS-III boats will be built by 2028 under a budget of KRW3.4 billion. Each submarine will displace 3,450t and will carry Hyunmoo-2 submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBM) and Hyunmoo-3 land attack cruise missiles (LACM).

[/b]The motivating factor for this ROKN aspiration for more capable diesel-electric submarines is North Korea's pursuit of ever-larger submarines fitted with SLBMs that could carry nuclear warheads.

DAPA indicated that contracts to commence these projects would be awarded in the coming few months.

South Korea Launches First-of-Class 3,000-ton KSS-III Diesel-Electric Attack Submarine

....

The entire KSS-III class of subs will be produced in three batches. The first batch will include three boats, each fitted with six vertical missile tubes with the first two submarines to be assembled by DSME and the third to be built by South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI). The first three boats are expected to be operational by the early 2020s.

The next batch of three submarines, also fitted with a six-tube vertical launch system, is slated to be deployed by 2025, while the last three boats, reportedly boasting a displacement of over 3,500 tons and equipped with 10 vertical launch tubes each, will all be delivered to the ROKN by 2029. Each batch will reportedly see a gradual increase in the number of indigenous components used for the various sub-systems of the boats.
