http://www.thalesgroup.com/Pages/Solution.aspx?id=3387&pid=1568

1 Harvest Hawk pakket koste in 2009 USD 22 miljoen.

Waarom 4x M134's vs GAU-19 3-loops .50?
                       GAU-19       M134
gewicht:            62,6 kg        20,5 kg                             4x M134 = 82 kg
vuursnelheid       2.000          3.000 schoten per minuut,   4x M134 = 12.000 schoten per min.  (totale ammo voorraad = 24.000 schoten.
gemiddelde
terugstootkracht  286 kg        68 kg  ,4x M134 = 272 kg
effectief bereik    1.850 m       1.100 m
betrouwbaarheid  40.000       500.000 Meantime Rounds Between Failure

KC-130J Harvest Hawk: Marine Corps Teaches Old Plane New Tricks in Afghanistan
The Harvest Hawk system includes a version of the target sight sensor used on the AH-1Z Cobra attack helicopter as well as a complement of four AGM-114 Hellfire and 10 Griffin missiles, a modular, precision-guided missile system typically employed on unmanned aerial vehicles. The system expands the role of the KC-130J for 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing (Forward) beyond its traditional level of support to include close air support against enemy positions and providing surveillance to disrupt improvised explosive device emplacements.

"Harvest Hawk, for me, is an opportunity to help the guys on the ground," said Capt. Bradley C. Stadelmeier, with VMGR-352, a co-pilot for the Harvest Hawk equipped KC-130J.

Optie-pakket voor Herc's

Lockheed Martin Completes AN/AAQ-39 Targeting System Deliveries To The USAF

Lockheed Martin recently delivered the final AN/AAQ-39 targeting system full production unit to the U.S. Air Force. Q-39 is the electro-optical/infrared targeting system for the U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command AC-130U Gunship.

Q-39 improves on the combat-proven Gunship Multispectral Sensor System (GMS2). Like GMS2, Q-39 includes a large-aperture, midwave infrared sensor, two image-intensified television cameras and a near-infrared laser pointer.

Q-39 also features a new solid-state, three-color laser designator and software enhancements that increase system performance and reliability.

These components are integrated into a highly stabilized turret to ensure outstanding image quality and highly accurate line-of-sight pointing for gunfire control.

"Q-39 provides improved positive combat identification for AC-130U aviators," said Joseph Butera, senior program manager of airborne systems in Lockheed Martin's Missiles and Fire Control business. "Precision fire control allows warfighters to confidently engage threats at safe stand-off ranges and return safely to base."

The U.S. Air Force awarded the GMS2 initial development contract in 2004 and the initial production contract in 2006. Lockheed Martin received the follow-on contract for Q-39 prime mission equipment in July 2008 and delivered the first of 12 full production units in July 2010. Contracted sustainment activities will continue throughout the year with options to extend support another two years.

In December 2010, the U.S. Air Force awarded a contract to upgrade the five initial production GMS2 systems to the Q-39 follow-on production configuration. Deliveries of the upgraded systems will be complete in 2012.

Q-39 is one of several high-performance stabilized targeting systems designed, manufactured, tested and supported by Lockheed Martin. The company's fielded solutions for fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft include Modernized Target Acquisition Designation Sight/Pilot Night Vision Sensor for the U.S. Army, Sniper Advanced Targeting Pod for the U.S. Air Force and Target Sight System for the U.S. Marine Corps.

Airbus Military studies gunship versions of medium transports

By:   Craig Hoyle London

12:46 10 May 2012

Airbus Military is studying possible new variants of its CN-235 and C-295 medium transports adapted for tasks including combat support and battlefield surveillance, along with performance enhancements for the latter type.

Revealing the company's investigation of a gunship development, head of market development for light and medium transport aircraft Jerónimo Amador says: "We have seen a growing interest from customers." This has been prompted by a need to perform counter-piracy operations, participate in low-intensity conflict and provide protection for critical national infrastructure, he adds.

Amador confirms that Airbus Military has held talks with ATK over the US company's work to modify two ex-Spanish air force CN-235s as gunships for Jordan, and that it is "looking for a partner to allow us to offer an efficient solution".

Aircraft could be manufactured in a dedicated armed reconnaissance and combat support configuration, to include an electro-optical/infrared sensor, fuselage-housed 30mm (1.2in) cannon and potentially laser-guided rockets and missiles. A surveillance radar could also be carried, along with intelligence-gathering equipment and up to four onboard operator stations. Alternatively, customers could be offered elements of this system as a removable kit.

Potential customers exist in Asia, Latin America and the Middle East, Amador says.

Other applications now being considered for the C-295 include a model equipped with a ground surveillance radar and up to eight onboard operator workstations, a signals intelligence-gathering development and a VVIP transport. Airbus Military is also eyeing a palletised kit, which would enable the aircraft to serve as an inflight refuelling platform for combat helicopters.

Meanwhile, Amador says near-term enhancements to the aircraft could include aerodynamic improvements - winglets were considered as part of a proposed airborne early warning and control system version being offered with Elta Systems - and using more power from its Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127G engines. The latter move could boost the type's rate of climb and cruise speed and offer increased mission flexibility, he says.

New Alenia Gunship Could Fire Hellfires, PGMs

Alenia Aermacchi and ATK presented their MC-27J gunship at the Farnborough International Airshow on July 10 and said the converted C-27J could be configured to fire Hellfire missiles and release precision-guided munitions.

Officially described as a multi-mission version of the Italian tactical transport, the MC-27J will host pallet-based systems offering command and control, ISR and communications broadcast missions, as well as a gunship variant.

The latter version was brought to Farnborough, complete with a Mk44 30mm gun, which fires from the side door. The gun is installed by ATK.

The gun, also used by the U.S. Air Force on its AC-130, will fire 200 rounds a minute from an altitude of up to 12,000 feet and can be installed in four hours, said Dave Sharpin, vice president for strategy and business development at ATK.

Making it distinct from the AC-130 and the CN235 converted into a gunship by ATK for Jordan, the gun barrel on the MC-27J can be removed, allowing the door to be closed and the aircraft reconfigured for other uses.

AleniaAermacchi will also therefore be able to offer the gunship configuration as an upgrade to C-27Js.

A first phase of flight testing to take place this autumn in the U.S. will see a sighting system set on the cannon and linked to the pilot. A second phase next year will involve an electro-optical/infrared camera as well as an extra pallet with space for two operator consoles.

At a later stage, Hellfire missiles could be incorporated, as well as precision-guided missiles on a further pallet, which could be released from the rear ramp of the aircraft or from a second aperture on the side of the aircraft, Sharpin said.

Alenia Aermaccchi has said it aims to sell 50 MC-27Js in the next 20 years. The firm will likely act as prime contractor but ATK may take the role if it already has a close relationship with the customers, officials said.

The Italian Air Force already has a separate requirement for a C-27J gunship, known as Praetorian.

Alenia Aermacchi introduces the new MC-27J, multi-mission version of the Spartan

Alenia Aermacchi is pleased to introduce a new version of the C-27J battlefield airlifter, the MC-27J. The MC-27J is a multi-mission, armed, Roll On/Roll Off (RO/RO) derivative of the C-27J Spartan. Alenia Aermacchi and ATK will jointly produce and market this new offering.

The new MC-27J is an adaptable, agile, and affordable solution for various airborne multi-mission requirements that today are performed by a wide variety of aircraft, including special operations versions of the C-130. The MC-27J is not just a gunship, but a battlefield tested platform equipped with proven sensors, communications, and weapons suite able to execute a wide range of customer-driven missions.

The MC-27J is designed to support air forces and Special Forces in performing several key operations, including: anti-terrorism missions, the evacuation of military personnel and civil populations from crisis areas, fighting asymmetrical threats and for all standard operations of the Special Forces. The MC-27J provides Special Forces a platform with quick transfer speed; long operational range and ample cargo capacity (console for the systems' operators, troops and vehicles). The MC-27J is capable of taking off from and landing on short and/or unprepared strips while acting as an autonomous command and control centre integrated with the ground command network. The MC-27J will also provide Intelligence Surveillance & Reconnaissance (ISR) capability as well as the ability to deploy paratroopers. Furthermore, the MC-27J's target designation and on-board weapons systems provide outstanding support for ground operations.

ATK's gunship capability is provided from a newly developed palletized weapons system, which is self-contained, modular, scalable and provides RO/RO flexibility. This palletized system integrates sensors, communications and weapons into a responsive and reconfigurable mission package. Specific features for the MC-27J system include enhanced electro-optical/infrared targeting sensors, a trainable 30mm cannon, precision guided munitions, advanced communications and a networked mission management and fire control system.

The MC-27J provides outstanding offensive capability utilizing a palletized weapon system specifically designed for the ATK 30mm GAU-23 cannon and other precision guided weapon systems, resulting in a highly effective system that minimizes collateral damages. The palletized system is designed for easy embarkation and disembarkation via the aircraft's rear ramp; permitting flexibility in the use of the unaltered aircraft. The primary configuration requires minimal integration on the aircraft's frame to significantly reduce acquisition costs and development times, while retaining the C-27J's robust airlift capabilities.

At the core of the MC-27J is the C-27J Spartan, the best selling battlefield airlifter, offering payload, persistence and out-of-area capabilities coupled with high performance; high maneuverability and the capability to operate on short, unpaved strips. The Spartan is currently the world's best seller in the tactical airlifter's category with 89 airplanes ordered by 9 countries all over the world including Italy, United States and recently, Australia.
The MC-27J offer commonality of equipments and systems with larger multi-mission platforms but at much lower operational costs and with the operational flexibility of being able to operate form shorter runways also in hot and high conditions, and as modern and reliable solution for those air forces interested in integrating their forces with a skilled airplane in a very delicate role but at the same time very flexible in its use.

MC-27J To Test-fire its Cannon Within the Year

The planned gunship variant of the C-27J will undertake the first test firings of its 30mm cannon while slaved to an electro-optical/infrared sensor at the end of this year or early 2014, officials at the Paris Air Show said on Wednesday.

Italy's Alenia Aermacchi, which builds the new MC-27J, and ATK, which has partnered on the program, brought the test aircraft to Paris after a first phase of development that saw the first firing of the cannon in flight.

..............

Hayes said the munitions the plane might release included the Viper Strike and the Griffin, while it was yet to be decided if the munitions should be released by opening the tail ramp of the plane or through launch tubes.

Ben Stone, the CEO of Alenia Aermacchi North America, predicted 50 sales of the aircraft in 20-25 years, with South America, the Far East and the Middle East as markets.

Jordan Purchases U.S. Navy's Advanced Precision Kill Weapons System

(Source: US Naval Air Systems Command; issued May 1, 2014)

PATUXENT RIVER, Md. --- The U.S. Navy signed an agreement with the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan April 14 for the first international sale of the Department's Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS).

The initial Foreign Military Sale (FMS) includes procurement of the weapons as well as logistics and engineering support for integration on the Jordanian CN-235 gunship.

"We look forward to delivering this combat-proven weapon system to the Jordanian Armed Forces," said Capt. Al Mousseau, Direct and Time Sensitive Strike program manager (PMA-242) at Patuxent River. "International sales offer the opportunity to enhance combat capability for partner nations and are an effective means to support the U.S. industrial base."

APKWS modifies unguided 2.75-inch rockets with a semi-active laser guidance section to transform the rockets currently used in the Jordanian fleet into low-cost, precision guided munitions.

Currently employed from U.S. Navy MH-60 Seahawk and Marine Corps UH/AH-1 Light Attack helicopters, APKWS has been successfully demonstrated from a variety of fixed wing platforms capable of firing the weapon in comparable flight regimes.

The Navy and industry partner BAE Systems plan to deliver APKWS to the Jordanian Kingdom in 2016.

ATK Delivers Fully Outfitted Light Gunship to Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan

ARLINGTON, Va. --- ATK, in conjunction with King Abdullah II Design and Development Bureau (KADDB), has delivered the first modified CASA-235 light gunship aircraft to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

ATK was awarded a contract by KADDB to modify two of the country's CASA-235 transport aircraft into highly capable and cost-effective special mission aircraft. The completed aircraft has been delivered to the customer and will be featured during the 10th edition of the Special Operations Conference and Exhibition (SOFEX), May 6-8, 2014, in Amman, Jordan.

ATK has delivered the first modified CASA-235 light gunship aircraft to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

ATK, with the full participation of KADDB, began the U.S.-based flight and gun test program in the fall of 2013. The comprehensive test program was conducted to validate the performance of the gunship and to perform system checkouts. Testing included a full suite of aircraft flying qualities, sensor and weapons testing, with accuracy validation completed in March 2014.

"The delivery of this light gunship is a significant achievement for the program and our collaborative partnership with KADDB and Jordan," said Mike Kahn, senior vice president and president of ATK's Defense Group. "We brought together our strong weapon and mission systems expertise from across ATK Defense to provide this important multi-mission gunship capability to our allies."

In collaboration with KADDB, ATK developed and provided the system integration and aircraft modifications to turn a CASA-235 cargo plane into a multi-mission gunship. Modifications included the installation of an electro-optical targeting system, a laser designator, aircraft self-protection equipment, a synthetic aperture radar and an armaments capability that provides sustained and precise firepower in a variety of scenarios using Hellfire laser-guided missiles, 2.75-inch rockets, and a side-mounted M230 link-fed 30mm chain gun.

The ATK-supplied gun is controlled by the fire-control system, automatically linking the gun's aim point to the selected target of interest, as illuminated by the mission operators using the laser designator. These capabilities are integrated with and controlled by ATK's Mission System that provides both day and night reconnaissance and fire control capabilities, and the ability to acquire, monitor and track items of interest.

The gunship capability package is part of ATK's Special Mission Aircraft product portfolio, which provides affordable, responsive and advanced capabilities to customer-preferred platforms, including a roll-on, roll-off palletized approach. Combat Spartan maiden flight

The "Combat Spartan" or Praetorian has made its first flight. Alenia Aermacchi confirmed the pre-configured MC-27J gunship – officially a multi-mission aircraft – completed took of from the company's test field in Turin, Italy, on 25 April 2014.

The test aircraft has been modified with an L-3 Wescam MX-15Di Electro-Optical and Infrared Turret that is mounted under the nose of the aircraft and is optimized for ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) and SAR missions (Search and Rescue); and with Link-16 datalink software and hardware provisions that will prepare the aircraft for the ATK palletized mission system installation. Provisions for upgraded Selex ES communication system with crypto capability have been also set up.

The installation of both the ATK developed modular roll-on/roll-off mission and weapon system, and a modified side door for the GAU-23 30 mm cannon installation will be completed in May. In June 2014, a new series of flight tests, including firing the side-mounted cannon, will be completed.

The development of the MC-27J had seen the very first ground and basic flight tests already in the Spring of 2013, with the basic C-27J model, conducted by ATK and Alenia Aermacchi at Eglin AFB, Florida, USA. They tested the C-27J's ability to host a self-contained, roll-on/roll-of gun pallet (RORO) using ATK's GAU-23 30mm cannon in a side firing configuration. Live fire tests and a timed demonstration of the capability to quickly transition from a cargo configuration to a weaponized configuration of the aircraft exceeded all test objectives.

After completion the MC-27J not only will sport the gun, but can also use precision guided munition weapon systems while being in full flight. The Combat Spartan can do what normally is only availiable on the bigger and more expensive Hercules type of gunships (MC-130).

Two New Gunships Seek International Customers

After years in which aerial gunships were synonymous with the US-built AC-130, not one but two new offerings were on display last week in Jordan, reflecting a growing demand from other nations for aerial strikes by slow moving aircraft.

Visitors to the Special Operations Forces Exhibition & Conference (SOFEX) in Jordan got a first look at a pair of CASA C-235 aircraft purchased secondhand from Spain and converted to gunship configuration for the Royal Jordanian Air Force.

..../....

But ATK and Alenia officials stressed that the AC-235 and the MC-27J are different animals.

While the C-235 is a permanent conversion, the MC-27J is a modular aircraft using loadable pallets, allowing it to be used alternatively as a gunship, intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance (ISTAR) aircraft and transporter.

"They have different capabilities and are for customers with different requirements; one is a fixed gunship, the other (MC-27J) has a roll-on/roll-off multimission capability," said Dave Sharpin, vice president of Business Development and Strategy at ATK.

Both aircraft feature a 30mm gun, but the GAL-23 on the Alenia aircraft, as used by the AC-130J, has a longer range thanks to its longer, 173mm rounds.

"The MC-27J gun has about double the range of the M230LF gun," an Alenia official said. "That gives the MC-27J a standoff capability that allows it to stay out of the range of the ground-to-air fire you might see today in Mali or Libya."

...../.....

Discussing the need for gunships, the Alenia official used operations in Mali to combat insurgents as an example. "A multimission ISTAR platform with gunship capability and persistence would be effective in this situation," he said.

US special operations forces studied a possible C-27J gunship configuration before the US order of the aircraft was cut. Now, US operators are once again due to receive aircraft, albeit for paratroop activity. "There are no discussions about a gunship version at this point," Sharpin said

How the AC-130 destroyed at least 20 vehicles per night during Vietnam War

(https://www.defensieforum.nl/Forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ftheaviationist.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2014%2F07%2FAC-130-Spectre.jpg&hash=0fba7a43c9dd321c5f7b30bc4b34eba17ecfd778)

During the early days of Vietnam Conflict, the US developed a special kind of attack aircraft to stop the flow of enemy troops and supplies: the gunship.
The Gunship aircraft, born from the conversion of cargo aircraft into powerful aerial weapons armed with big guns, were based on the concept of the circling attack.

In other words, the guns were mounted on the left side of the gunship so that the plane could fly a bank circle, achieving a good accuracy in strafing the target by using high velocity guns with a caliber of at least .30.

The first two types of gunships developed by the US were the twin-engine piston powered Douglas C-47 Skytrain and Fairchild C-119 Flying Boxcar, but the final leap was made relying on the size, speed and heft of the Lockheed C-130 Hercules which became known in the gunships world as the AC-130 Spectre.

The first AC-130As were deployed in Vietnam in 1968. They were armed with two 20 mm and two 40 mm cannons and they flew their first missions teamed with F-4s, which had the task to attack and destroy with cluster bombs the enemy AAA (Anti Aircraft Artillery) that opened fire against the gunship.

During the first missions  the Spectre was also able to achieve an aerial victory when on May 8, 1969 an AC-130 shot down an enemy helicopter, as told by Wayne Mutza in his book Gunships The Story of Spooky, Shadow, Stinger and Spectre .

But the AC-130s were best and widely used from October 1969 to April 1970, the so called dry season, during which the NVA (North Vietnamese Army) trucks transported ammunition supplies by using the Ho Chi Minh Trail.

Spectres crews, that had the task to hunt trucks, were able to destroy and damage 25 of them in one mission: among these there were also AAA vehicles and, some times, the gunships came back to the base badly damaged. In the 1969-1970 dry season the NVA moved about 68,000 tons of provisions on the Trail, 47,000 tons of which were destroyed by the 12 deployed AC-130s with their 20 mm high density rounds and 40 mm Bofors cannons.

The 1970-1971 was even busier for the gunships since American and South Vietnamese soldiers began moving into Laos: in fact, while the numbers of AC-130s increased from 12 to 18, the western part of the Trail became filled with an always increasing number of vehicles coming from east, where interdiction sorties had concentrated. Therefore, during this period a gunship could destroy more than 25 trucks per night and the 1970-1971 dry season ended with 58,500 tons of material destroyed.

By the end of the 1971, after the NVA increased the number of the armored vehicles and the caliber of guns along the Trail, the U.S. deployed the first example of AC-130E.

As explained in detail by Wayne Mutza in his book, the new Spectre model was armed with a new more potent gun, the M102 105 mm Howitzer which replaced one of the Bofors cannons on the left side of the gunship.

The first Howitzer was installed in a gunship after it was repaired from some battle damages. Since it could fire from a distance of 12,000 meters, the Howitzer highly increased Spectre stand-off capabilities: the result was a higher kill ratio against trucks, since a vehicle hit by a 105 round had only a 10% chance to be still operable.

During its first Vietnam deployment this single howitzer-mounted AC-130E destroyed 75 trucks and damaged 92 ones with the 105, and destroyed 27 vehicles and damaged 24 ones with 40 mm fire in 32 missions.

Of bijvoorbeeld zo'n gunslinger.

Gunship roll-on roll-off pallet system ... Harvest Hawk

August 16, 2014

The Italian manufacturer of the 28 ton C-27J air transport has successfully completed testing a gunship version called the MC-27J Praetorian. This conversion system is based on mounting n 30mm automatic cannon and fire control system on pallets of the type usually used in the C-37J to carry and load cargo. Night vision sensors, laser designators and high-rez vidcams are in a turret that is attached under the nose of the aircraft. Still to come are tests with guided missiles (like Hellfire, 70mm, and other small ones like Griffin) launched from hard points on the wings. This system is designed for quick installation and allows a C-27J to be quickly converted to a MC-27J gunship by loading the pallets and attaching the missile launchers and sensor turret to the outside of the aircraft.

The C-27J can carry three HCU-6/E pallets. Each is 224 cm (88 inches) wide, 274 cm (108 inches) long, and 57mm (2.25 inches) high and can carry up to 4.5 tons. The pallets are loaded via the rear ramp. The Praetorian testing is to be completed by 2015 and Italian special operations forces are to receive three of them by 2016.

This use of palletized systems is not new. Back in 2008, the air force portion of U.S. SOCOM (AFSOC, Air Force Special Operations Command) looked into using light (two engine) C-27J transports for "light gunships." This twin-engine aircraft can carry 9 tons for up to 2,500 kilometers and land on smaller airfields than the four engine transports can handle. SOCOM planned to take a C-27J and mount one or two 30mm automatic cannon on it, along with the AC-130 gunship sensors and communications gear, as well as guided missiles. Called the "AC-XX", this C-27J experiment didn't work out (mainly for political reasons) and SOCOM stuck with the AC-130. The Italians feel there might be an international market for a twin engine gunship using the American system of pallets to quickly convert a transport into a gunship.

Meanwhile, U.S. SOCOM (Special Operations Command) has equipped and deployed 14 similar MC-130W "Dragon Spear" gunships since 2010. The first MC-130W arrived in Afghanistan in late 2010, and a month later it had fired one of its weapons (a Hellfire missile) for the first time (killing five Taliban). Getting 14 new gunships into action so quickly was only possible because SOCOM adopted an idea developed by the U.S. Marine Corps: the "instant gunship." Called "Harvest Hawk," the marine instant gunship system works using weapons and sensors that can be quickly rolled into a C-130 transport and hooked up. This takes a few hours and turns the C-130 into a gunship (similar in capabilities existing on AC-130 gunships). The sensor package consists of day/night vidcams with magnification capability. The weapons currently consist of 10 Griffin missiles and 4 Hellfires. A 30mm autocannon is optional.

The 15.6 kg (34.5 pound) Griffin had earlier entered service in Afghanistan aboard UAVs. The older Hellfire II weighs 48.2 kg (106 pounds), carries a 9 kg (20 pound) warhead, and has a range of 8,000 meters. The Griffin has a 5.9 kg (13 pound) warhead which is larger, in proportion to its size, than the one carried by the heavier Hellfire. Griffin has pop-out wings, allowing it to glide and thus has a longer range (15 kilometers) than Hellfire. UAVs can carry more of the smaller missiles, typically two of them in place of one Hellfire.

This use of missiles instead of cannon has allowed for a major change in how gunships are used. As a result, in 2011 SOCOM, for the first time since the Vietnam War, allowed its MC-130 gunships to operate in daytime. For the last four decades it was believed too dangerous for these low, slow flying, heavily armed aircraft to operate when the sun was up. The key to this change is the use of missiles by gunships. The new, small missiles enable the slow, large, MC-130s to operate above the range of ground fire and still hit their targets.

Dragon Spear is based on the earlier Harvest Hawk system, which enabled marine KC-130J tankers to be transformed into a gunship, with the addition of the portable weapons and sensors. The marines had long noted the success of the U.S. Air Force AC-130 gunships that SOCOM (Special Operations Command) uses. But they couldn't afford them, as an AC-130 costs more than three times as much as a marine KC-130J aerial refueling aircraft. But the marines developed a solution. This is something the marines often do.

The KC-130J is the latest, and largest, USMC version of the C-130 transport used for aerial refueling. The KC-130J can also carry cargo and weapons (bombs and missiles) hung from the wings. Thus the Harvest Hawk version of the KC-130J adds a targeting pod, with the data going to a special cargo container containing control equipment (computers, commo, and displays) enabling operators use of the day/night sensors of the targeting pod, to fire missiles hung from the wings. The SOCOM version is the MC-130W.

The original plan was to have a 30mm Bushmaster cannon fired out the door, so that there would be gunfire support as well. But this was made optional, as the 14 missiles seemed to provide sufficient firepower. It also means less for Harvest Hawk to carry. The Mk44 30mm Bushmaster cannon weighs 157 kg (344 pounds) and fires at 200 or 400 rounds per minute (up to 7 per second). The cannon has 160 rounds available, before needing a reload. That means the gunner has 25-50 seconds worth of ammo, depending on rate of fire used. Each 30mm round weighs about 714 g (25 ounces, depending on type). Explosive anti-personnel rounds are fired when used in gunships. The fire control system, and night vision sensors, enable the 30mm gunners to accurately hit targets with high explosive shells. Existing SOCOM AC-130 gunships are armed with a 105mm howitzer and a 25mm and 40mm automatic cannon. But the two smaller caliber guns are being phased out of military service. The air force is considering equipping its gunships just with smart bombs and missiles.

The big thing with gunships is their sensors, not their weapons. Operating at night, the gunships can see what is going on below, in great detail. Using on-board weapons, gunships can immediately engage targets. But with the appearance of smart bombs (GPS and laser guided), aerial weapons are more available to hit any target that is found. So Harvest Hawk would be able to hit targets that were "time sensitive" (had to be hit before they got away) but could also call on smart bombs or laser guided missiles for targets that weren't going anywhere right away. Most of what Harvest Hawk does in Afghanistan is look for roadside bombs or the guys who plant them. These the marines want to track back to their base and then take out an entire roadside bomb operation.

Ultimately, the air force and SOCOM see the potential for the Harvest Hawk/Dragon Spear approach replacing custom built AC-130 gunships. There would still be a need for specially trained gunship crews. But they, and the several cargo containers of Harvest Hawk gear, could be held ready to go wherever they are most needed. Cargo aircraft serving as gunships first appeared, using twin-engine World War II era C-47 transports, in the 1960s over Vietnam. The troops called the gunships, which liked to operate at night, "Spooky." The gunships quickly moved to four engine C-130 transports but the nickname stuck.

Ghostrider's Big Gun: AC-130J Gets 105 ASAP; Laser Later

Sometimes smart bombs aren't the smart choice. Sometimes you just need a big bad flying gun. That's why the aging AC-130 gunship is still revered by ground troops for its ability to fire a 105mm cannon — a weapon normally mounted on light tanks. That's why the head of Air Force Special Operations Command, Lt. Gen. Bradley Heithold, decided the new model, the AC-130J Ghostrider, had to have the 105 instead of relying on missiles.

MV-22 deploys tube-launched weapons during gunship tests
Gareth Jennings, London - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly

The US Marine Corps (USMC) has tested the deployment of ramp-launched munitions from the Bell-Boeing MV-22 Osprey tiltrotor under wider plans to equip the aircraft with a gunship capability, it was announced earlier in April.

The tests, which were conducted in late March under the auspices of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA's) Persistent Close Air Support (PCAS) programme, saw an MV-22 launch both the Raytheon Griffin missile and the AeroVironment Switchblade loitering munition from tubes located on the ramp.

According to DARPA, the MV-22 launched an inert AGM-17 Griffin air-to-surface missile from a range of 9 km from the target, scoring a hit. No details pertaining to the Switchblade launch were released.

The trials of the two aft-firing munitions come on the back of a successful demonstration of the Osprey's forward-firing capabilities. In December 2014, another MV-22 fired a 70 mm rocket from a launch tube mounted on a 'cheek' fairing on the aircraft's left side, just beneath the pilot's side window.

The USMC is looking to arm its MV-22 aircraft so as to reduce its reliance on the Forward Arming and Refueling Points (FARPs) needed to support attack helicopters, such as the Bell AH-1Z Viper.

The gunship is one of a number of special mission variants envisaged for the V-22, with others being aerial refuelling (already demonstrated), command and control, surveillance, and executive transport.

The USMC is to receive 360 MV-22s once deliveries are complete.

IDEF 2015: Oto Melara showcases for the first time its 20 mm Gunship air-to-ground gun system

At IDEF 2015, which is held in Istanbul from 5-8 May, Italian company Oto Melara is showcasing for the first time the new 20mm Gunship for which commercial contacts with the Turkish aeronautic company TAI have already started. Gunship by Oto Melara is a palletized air-to-ground gun system, designed to be operated from military cargo aircraft, such as C130s (all versions), C27s or any other which has a standard military pallet (88'x108') capability.

In the present day stand-alone configuration, the Gunship system is self contained in a single cargo pallet, which carries the Vulcan 20mm Gatling gun mount and servos, a complete high-precision electro- optical Fire Control System (FCS), the gunner workstation, a 750 rds magazine (20x102mm linked), GPS reference, inertial system and all the electronics and power systems.

Total weight is 3.200lbs, including operator and a full magazine, but no ballistic protection. Gunship requires no integration or modifications to the aircraft: fire is through the left hand paratroop door and the pallet is secured to the floor with the existing locking levers.

The system is fully self-powered for about 30 minutes, but accepts gladly backup electric power from any cargo bay outlets (AC or DC), and is plugged to the aircraft ICS via standard connectors, also available in the bay.
This means that Gunship can be rapidly loaded on board with a normal fork lift, connected to the aircraft in seconds so that a standard cargo aircraft is ready to operate as a Gunship in just a few minutes.

After the mission is completed, if needed, the pallet is easily off-loaded and the aircraft goes back to its standard cargo role: should the aircraft carrying Gunship fail before takeoff, the system shall be off-loaded in a few minutes and placed on board a serviceable one, and the mission not aborted.

Gunship is capable of very accurate air-to-ground fire and can deliver an impressive payload in a relatively short burst, owing to the Vulcan gun very high rate of fire (4.000 rounds per minute).

Whenever tactically desirable, the system can deliver also saturation fire over designated areas, thanks to the large number of ready to fire round.

The Gunship system has been developed with the financial backing of the R&D Department of the Italian MoD, in accordance with a Special Forces requirement for airborne precision/long endurance fire support.

Thanks to the excellent Oto Melara experience in gunnery, ballistics and system integration, the prototype has been completed in less than one year, and more than 1,000 test rounds were fired in the company range during system development.

Last October the Gunship prototype has been delivered to the Italian Air Force Flight Test facility in Pratica di mare (Rome) in order to be certified for flight (on the C27J) and test fired in an air-to- ground range: all these tests, weather permitting, should be completed by April 2015. Last third of March the system on board the C27J has been flown to the Italian Air Force air-to- ground range of Capo Frasca, in Sardinia, and test-fired airborne for the first time.

One dry and eleven hot runs were flown, 50 rds each, for a total of 550 rds fired in a single sortie., at altitudes from 1.500 to 3.700ft, up to a slant range of .9 Nautical mile (about 1.700 meters). Despite aiming was manual via the EO system, all bursts were observed on/around the target, quantitative evaluation through high speed videos and ground targets conditions is now in progress.

This test has been very successful, so following the quantitative analysis the system will be fine- tuned for precision (we expect a final CEP (50 percent of the rounds within this distance from target) lower than 4 meters at 2.000m slant range ( 5.000ft altitude, with projectile flight-path 50°-60° below the horizon) and a larger one from higher up, most likely 10-12 meters from 10.000ft. Following this tune-up we plan another hot sortie for the next month.

In the present configuration, the weapon (the 20mm Vulcan M61) has been carefully chosen for its high rate of fire, small dimensions and contained recoil forces (which can significantly affect the system precision); other guns were evaluated, but, in any case, for air-to-ground (as for air-to-air) Gatling type guns should be always preferred.

At present the only possible alternative is the 25mm GAU/12 or 22 Gatling gun, with longer range and increased payload delivery, but with significant system cost and increased total weight.

An external C4ISR interface with Satcom/tactical Data Link can provide the pilot/operator with abundant target data, maps, pictures, and deliver ground HQ videos of the mission/attack result.

A dedicated C4ISR palletized system is now under development by an Italian company, in order to provide the gunner with whatever info can maximise the mission effectiveness and perform as a command post for the Special Forces operation on the ground which Gunship is planned to support.

For larger aircraft, such as all the C130s, a higher capacity ammo magazine can be fitted (up to 1.500-2.000 ready to fire rounds, that is twice the present one) and more performing E/O sensors, without endangering the very flexible and tactically valuable stand-alone single-pallet configuration.

SOFIC 2015: US Air Force looks to future gunship modernisation

Scott R Gourley, Tampa, Florida - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly | May 20, 2015

A number of enhancements are being planned or explored for Air Force Special Operations Command's (AFSOC's) Lockheed Martin AC-130J gunships now entering fixed-wing inventories, including a 105 mm cannon, an offboard sensor, and a directed energy weapon.

The command's gunship fleet has decreased from a high of 37 platforms down to 29 following the recent retirement of 1960s-era AC-130H Spectre aircraft, Lieutenant General Bradley Heithold, commander of AFSOC, noted during 20 May remarks at the Special Operations Forces Industry Conference (SOFIC) in Tampa, Florida.

"That's going down as we retire them," he said. "So we'll be going 'into a bathtub' for a while as we bring on the AC-130J."

AFSOC retires its last AC-130H Spectre gunship

Gareth Jennings, London - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly | May 28, 2015

The US Air Force's (USAF's) Special Operations Command (AFSOC) has retired from service the last of its Lockheed Martin AC-130H Spectre gunships after more than 45 years of service, it was announced on 28 May.

A ceremony marking the departure of aircraft 69-6569 'Excalibur' from the 16th Special Operations Squadron (SOS) of the 27th Special Operations Wing (SOW) was held at Cannon Air Force Base (AFB) in New Mexico on 26 May.

As the oldest type in AFSOC's gunship arsenal of AC-130H Spectre, AC-130U Spooky, and AC-130W Dragon Spear/Stinger II platforms, the AC-130H force of eight aircraft has been gradually drawn down over the past two years. However, despite being progressively withdrawn from service, the AC-130H has still been at the forefront of AFSOC's missions in Afghanistan, Iraq, and beyond. According to the USAF, the 16th SOS has flown more than 6,500 combat sorties during 26,000 combat hours, and has been responsible for over 4,600 enemy killed in action, along with over 5,200 enemy being captured, over the past 12 years.

The essential difference between the Spectre and Spooky platforms is that, in addition to the 40 mm Bofors cannon and 105 mm M102 Howitzer carried by both aircraft, the newer Spooky is also armed with a 25 mm Gatling gun. The AC-130W is essentially an MC-130W Combat Spear that has been equipped with a palletised precision-strike package (PSP), comprising a single 30 mm Mk 44 Bushmaster cannon, precision-guided munitions, and a single medium-calibre gun.

With the AC-130H now retired, AFSOC continues to field 17 AC-130Us, operated by the 4th SOS, 5th SOS, and 19th (Training) SOS of the 1st SOW at Hurlburt Field, and 12 AC-130W platforms operated from Cannon AFB by the 16th SOS, 73rd SOS, and 551st (Training) SOS of the 27th SOW.

As part of a wider MC/HC-130 re-capitalisation programme across AFSOC, the command is to receive 32 new AC-130J Ghostrider gunships by fiscal year 2021. Work to convert the first MC-130J Commando II into an AC-130J began in July 2012, with the type's initial operating capability set for later this year. Once the AC-130J is fully fielded, AFSOC's gunship fleet will comprise 49 AC-130U and AC-130J platforms (all 12 AC-130W Dragon Spear/Stinger II platforms will revert to their original MC-130W Combat Spear configuration).

USAF holding old gunships for laser demos

By James Drew, Washington DC | July 28, 2015

The US Air Force has kept some Lockheed Martin AC-130U gunships marked for retirement for use as directed energy weapon testbeds as the service pursues airborne lasers for offensive and defensive uses.

Maj Gen Jerry Harris, vice-chief of Air Combat Command, says a number of gunships that would have otherwise been sent to the boneyard are now being used to test emerging directed energy technologies, like lasers and microwave energy guns.

"We have a requirement for a minimum number of gunships," Harris said at a 28 July Centre for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments directed energy summit in Washington. "We have some additional U-models we will fly longer for testbeds."

Lt Gen Bradley Heithold, commander of Air Force Special Operations Command, said at the event that he wants the new C-130J Ghostrider gunship being developed to have both an offensive airborne laser capability and "active denial system," which is a microwave energy heat blast used to disperse crowds or a single threat.

"We want to build the ultimate battle plane that can fight its way to its objective," the commander says.

While AFSOC's primary focus is gunship-based lasers, Air Combat Command is also pursuing the technology for fighters and bombers. Harris says the Boeing F-15E Strike Eagle has "power to spare" and a testbed aircraft is available for experimentation.

He says the air force is looking for airborne lasers for integration into a standard pod or conformal tank for laser demonstrations. "It's past the time to test these in the labs; we need it in the field," he says.

Harris says laser weapons probably won't find their way onto the Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter any time soon, but might be integrated in the future beyond the Block 4 rollout, which is due to add new capabilities to the fifth-generation jet from 2019 to 2025.

USAF ready to field lasers on AC-130Ws by 2020

The U.S. Air Force is on course to field a podded, tactical laser on the AC-130W by 2020, and eventually the fighter community will get a laser weapon as well.

Speaking at the Air Force Association Air and Space Conference, Air Force Special Operational Command (AFSOC) chief, Lt. Gen. Bradley Heithold, said the laser will generate power greater than 120kw and is meant for destroying ground targets, not humans.

When technology matures enough to reduce the size, weight and power sensitivity of the weapon, it will used by fighters to take out surface-to-air defense, said ACC chief Gen. Herbert Carlisle.

AFSOC seeks expendable, small UAV as AC-130 gunship sensor

By James Drew, Washington DC | 17 September 2015

US Air Force Special Operations Command wants an expendable, tube-launched small unmanned aerial vehicle for its AC-130 "battleplane" for peering beneath cloud cover to direct gunfire and precision-guided munitions.

The special forces organisation, which employs a large fleet of manned gunships equipped with 30mm and 105mm cannons, is pursuing the so-called Tactical Off-board Sensor as a way of "taking the cover of weather away from the enemy".

AFSOC commander Lt Gen Bradley Heithold says the tube-launched UAV could be dropped from the back of the Lockheed Martin C-130-based gunship and orbit below the clouds. The sensor gimbal is controlled remotely from the AC-130, allowing crews to feed imagery and target coordinates into the on-board fire control system.

"Today, in many cases, we're giving the cover of weather to the enemy," Heithhold said at an AFA Air & Space Conference in Washington this week.

"The enemy is manoeuvring and massing against an objective often times because of the cover of weather, and we need to take that away."

AFSOC has initiated one quick concept-demonstrator programme using a Raytheon-Sensintel Coyote UAV and another standard 18- to 24-month acquisition project aimed at surveying industry and procure the best long-term solution. Heithhold wants an expendable device that can operate for 1h or more.

The L-3 Communications "Stiletto" expeditionary small UAV is tube-launched and has a 10nm radio control range.

Flightglobal

The Coyote was recently used by the Office of Naval Research to demonstrate UAV swarming and has been used in many other experiments.

L-3 Communications has a similar tube-launched UAV called Stiletto, which was on display at the conference. Stiletto weighs 12kg (28lbs) and has an endurance of more than 30min.

Off-board sensor technology is not new. The Air Force Research Laboratory has been exploring different devices for several years, but there needs to be a user like AFSOC for it to become a programme of record.

AC-130 gunships generally operate from 25,000ft to 28,000ft, proving "danger-close" air support to ground troops and special forces units. They carry a variety of smart weapons, including the Boeing Small Diameter Bomb and Raytheon Griffin missile.

AFSOC developing tactics for '2020' AC-130 gunship laser weapon

By James Drew, Washington DC | 17 September 2015

The head of US Air Force Special Operations Command has issued a "JFK challenge" to the defence industry to install a high-power electric laser on an AC-130 gunship by the end of the decade.

Lt Gen Bradley Heithold says just as US president John F Kennedy wanted to put a man on the moon by the end of the 1960s, he wants a laser-armed gunship by 2020. The commander issued the challenge at AFA's Air & Space Conference in Washington this week.

He wants the system to weigh less than 2,268kg (5,000lbs) and occupy a space no greater than one gun position on the latest AC-130J "Ghostrider" gunship.

The general first announced his pursuit of a laser gunship in February, but his comments this week provide the first solid time frame for development and fielding.

Heithold says his command is already developing concepts of operation as well as "tactics, techniques and procedures" for how to employ an airborne laser weapon in combat. AFSOC has also prepared a "capabilities development document" that lays out the necessary key performance parameters.

"You have to have a wheelbarrow full of paperwork before you get a wheelbarrow full of money," according to Heithold. "Nobody's going to give you money unless you have fleshed out what you want this to look like and what's the overall cost of the system."

The intent is to create a laser powerful enough to knock out missiles defensively, but also to "burn a beer-can sized hole" in a vehicle.

That level of power has been demonstrated many times with ground-based weapons, but a much higher level of sophistication is needed to achieve the same results from the air.

One AC-130W Stinger II gunship has been spared from retirement to support development and testing, the general says.

"To me, the hard part will be directing the beam. We can create a laser," he says. "If you're shooting a laser from the ground you're in a stable situation, but now you've got to put it in an aircraft."

AFSOC's pursuit of laser weapon technology coincides with an increase in US Special Operations Forces spending on science and technology. US Special Operations Command traditionally spends about 3% of its $10 billion annual budget on S&T, but that portion is being boosted to 5%.

In an odd twist, AFSOC has no plans to zap humans with the laser since that would go against several long-standing international treaties, like the Protocol on Blinding Laser Weapons.

Instead, the special forces community wants to disable incoming missiles and silently burn holes in solid targets like communications towers, boats, cars and aircraft.

The Advanced Tactical Laser was a previous attempt to employ a 100kW chemical oxygen iodine laser (COIL) from an AC-130 gunship. The emphasis has since shifted to electric lasers due to their reduced size, weight and power requirements.

Ghostrider gunship scrapped after inverted flight scare

By Craig Hoyle, London | 17 November 2015

The US Air Force had to scrap one of its brand-new Lockheed Martin AC-130J Ghostrider gunships following a training mishap earlier this year, the service has revealed.

In an Accident Investigation Board report released earlier this month, the Air Force Materiel Command says the adapted Hercules received damage estimated at more than $115 million after a flight-test crew lost control.

Conducted by 413th Flight Test Squadron personnel from Eglin AFB in Florida over the Gulf of Mexico on 21 April, the sortie involved what the USAF describes as an assessment of the AC-130J's "medium-risk flying qualities".

While being operated at roughly 15,000ft, "the aircraft exceeded the targeted angle of sideslip until it departed controlled flight," the report states. It "momentarily inverted, before being recovered after losing approximately 5,000ft of altitude." The aircraft's crew – who escaped injury – returned to base and landed safely, but the Ghostrider was rendered a total loss, having exceeded its operating g limits and design load.

US Air Force

Investigators have attributed the incident to the pilot's "excessive rudder input during the test point, followed by inadequate rudder input to initiate a timely recovery from high angle of sideslip due to over-controlled/under-controlled aircraft," along with the "wrong choice of action during an operation."

Contributing factors included: instrumentation and warning system issues; spatial disorientation; confusion; and inadequate provision of procedural guidance or publications to the team; the report states.

The US Air Force Special Operations Command received its first AC-130J at Hurlburt Field AFB in Florida in July 2015, to support testing. Once in frontline use, the type will be equipped with weapons including a 30mm cannon, 105mm cannon and a variety of precision-guided air-to-surface munitions. The service plans to have an operational fleet of 32 of the type by fiscal year 2021, with initial capability slated for FY2017.

The US Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) and US Navy are to collaborate on the development of a laser mounted weapon for the AC-130 aircraft. The move comes as the Navy has been developing and researching energy directed weapons with their Laser Weapon System, which saw deployment aboard the Afloat Forward Staging Base USS Ponce last year. The lasers success will be the basis for a cooperation between the two branches, and how this can aid the development of a similar system for aircraft. The AC-130 will conceivably see a miniaturized version of the one used on the USS Ponce, and possess both offensive and defensive capabilities. It is hoped the lasers will help gunships disable enemy systems and improve identification of targets on the ground. This would avoid incidents such as the bombing of the Doctors Without Borders hospital in Kunduz, Afghanistan in October.

U.S. Marine Corps wants to convert all its KC-130Js, MV-22Bs into gunships

Marines To Add 'Harvest Hawk' Weapons Kit to Entire C-130J, V-22 Fleets

THE PENTAGON – The Marine Corps intends to add improved sensors and precision-strike capability to its entire KC-130J Super Hercules tanker/transport plane and MV-22 Osprey tiltrotor fleets, applying the "Harvest Hawk" concept to make both aircraft more multi-mission, the deputy commandant of the Marine Corps for aviation told USNI News this week.

Lt. Gen. Jon Davis said the Marines' next aviation plan would include upgrading all 79 C-130Js into Harvest Hawk-capable platforms. The Hercules Airborne Weapons Kit (HAWK) includes both modifications to the plane – the installation of a new MX-29 sensor ball with a laser designator on the nose of the plane, and the Intrepid Tiger electronic warfare pod – as well as a supply of Hellfire, Griffin and Viper Strike missiles for precision strike. The Intrepid Tiger pod is already installed on the AV-8B Harriers and F/A-18 Hornets, and the Marine Corps intends to put the pod on the C-130Js, V-22s and H-1 attack helicopters. Davis said the pod is a "great capability, gives us a jamming capability, an electronic warfare capability for not only [self]-protection but more importantly that people on the ground can manipulate and operate. It's open architecture so they can control the weapon system from the ground."

Davis said 10 C-130Js had already been modified with the initial Harvest Hawk kit and would receive the upgraded sensor ball, and the rest of the fleet would go through the full Harvest Hawk modifications under the Marines' next aviation plan, which is being developed now.

The aviation plan will also outline what Davis called an "Osprey Hawk," which would provide the same improved sensor ball with laser designator, jamming pod and laser-guided munitions, as well as the V-22 Air Refueling System (VARS) to allow the Osprey to refuel other aircraft in the air.

Davis said the strike capability will be important for the V-22, which is in high-demand and being used in ways its current configuration is not optimized for.

"We have a weapon system called Switchblade, which is a gravity-drop system (with laser-designation guidance), and guys were throwing that out of the back of the V-22 and get a precision hit on a target out there from a V-22," he said of a previous demonstration. "So if I've got a sensor ball with a laser designator, I can throw something like a Switchblade out the back. Right now we have a belly gun, I think the belly gun is relatively ineffective for what we're trying to do, but you could put a laser rocket like the APKWS (Advanced Precision-Kill Weapon System) on the V-22, or a precision-drop weapon, gravity drop weapon like a ... Viper Strike."

For the V-22, the most obvious "Osprey Hawk" benefit is the much-improved strike capability. For the C-130J, the transport and tanker airplane would become a multi-mission craft, with the sensor ball allowing for route reconnaissance missions when needed.

But Davis said the improved sensor ball would bring other important benefits as well, chiefly improved safety while landing.

"I can make a case for having a sensor ball on the nose of the airplane from the safety of flight perspective, looking at your landing zone, especially at night," Davis said. "These are strategic airplanes for us, for moving men and material all around, and ... I can't afford to break one, and so having the sensor ball in there" will be important, he said of the C-130J fleet. The Air Force has done serious damage to some of its planes by landing on a runway the pilot couldn't see were broken, Davis said, and the Marines cannot afford to lose a plane that plays such an integral role in forward presence and sustainment. The upgraded sensor ball in the improved Harvest Hawk package would help avoid this scenario by providing a better view of the landing zone.

The improved sensor ball would also magnify the landing zone, which the FLIR ball on many Marine aircraft does not do.

"Right now the FLIR on the V-22 is a one-to-one FLIR, it doesn't magnify the LZ (landing zone), it doesn't help the pilots look. We lost one in Hawaii – if they had been able to zoom in on the target at range and say hey, the LZ's not big enough, or there's a fence there or whatever, let's move over here," then lives could have been saved, Davis said. "So to me it's a great capability and again allows the Marine Corps to position these platforms to be multimission platforms."

Davis said the timeline for the Harvest Hawk and Osprey Hawk upgrades were unclear. Three vendors are interested in competing for the FLIR replacement sensor ball, he said. Those companies will demonstrate their capabilities, and the results of the competition will be fed into the Marines' technology insertion plan for the C-130Js and the V-22s.

AFSOC shoots for AC-130 laser gunship mod in 2020

By Leigh Giangreco | Washington DC | 30 September, 2016

US Special Operations Command has requested funding from the Defense Department for fiscal year 2018 budget to begin modifying an AC-130 gunship for a high energy laser capability.

If approved for the budget, Air Force Special Operations Command anticipates the service could begin the modifications as early as Fiscal 2020 on an AC-130W currently used backup aircraft inventory at Cannon AFB, New Mexico, an AFSOC spokesman told FlightGlobal. Millions of dollars have already been set aside for the ground and flight testing, AFSOC chief Lt Gen Brad Webb says.

The effort is working its way through SOCOM programme executive offices fixed wing, Dalghren laboratories, the undersecretary of defence and the office of cost assessment and programme evaluation, he tells FlightGlobal.

The move is not the first time SOCOM has looked to jump-start the high energy laser program. Earlier this year, SOCOM submitted its unfunded requirements list to Congress, which included a request to include funds for the laser in the Fiscal 2017 budget.

But the Pentagon's top weapons buyer expressed skepticism recently over directed energy weapons, noting airborne lasers continue to face issues with weather and atmospheric conditions.

"We're not at the point where we can decide we're going to put lasers in the force," Frank Kendall told reporters in September.

Webb dismissed the idea that the larger DOD enterprise is rebuffing directed energy projects in favor of more immediate budget concerns. While the air force is examining directed energy from a defensive perspective and AFSOC is targeting an offensive capability, Webb says there are some synergies between the two efforts.

"There have been efforts that have fallen short because of technology in the past," he says. "We want to be mindful of that going forward and that's probably what you're picking up on. I think it's technology worth pursuing."

AFSOC will determine the laser's mounting location during testing, Webb says. The Air Force Scientific Advisory Board and AFSOC determined earlier this year that a left-side mounted laser would prove more cost effective than a belly mounted weapon. Former AFSOC chief Lt Gen Heithold has also mentioned that size, weight and power restraints favor fitting the laser into an existing space rather than adding the capability with the conventional guns. Initially, AFSOC will replace the AC-130W's 30mm gun with a laser, Webb says.

Basler offers BT-67 gunship to Philippines

US company Basler Turbo Conversions is offering its BT-64 gunship to the Philippines as that country looks for a replacement for its ageing Rockwell OV-10 Broncos, the company announced on 12 October.

The BT-67 is essentially a twin-turboprop conversion of the Douglas DC-3 Dakota fitted with updated systems such as digital avionics, a night-vision goggle-compatible cockpit, weather radar, and a forward-looking infrared (FLIR) sensor. It is being offered as a multirole platform that not only performs the ground attack role of the OV-10, but can also fulfil transport, surveillance, aero medical evacuation, and maritime patrol requirements of the Philippine Air Force (PAF).

According to the Basler Turbo, the BT-67 offers a flexible configuration depending on the mission, a rough-field short take-off and landing (STOL) capability, a readily accessible pool of parts and spares, and reduced vulnerability to manportable air defence systems (MANPADS) on account of the exhaust vents for the twin Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-67R engines being angled over the wings.

The BT-67 is based on arguably the most proven airframe in the history of aviation, with the DC-3 having originally entered service in the mid-1930s. Performance specifications for the turboprop-powered Basler variant give it a more than 4,500 kg payload capacity over 650 n miles (or 1,200 kg over 1, 875 n miles with long-range tanks), and a 35 m 3 cabin volume. The aircraft has a cruising speed of 210 kt and a service ceiling of 13,000 ft.

Already fielded by the air forces of Colombia (gunship), El Salvador (transport), Guatemala (transport), Mali (transport), Mauritania (surveillance), Thailand (scientific research), and by the US State Department (transport and surveillance), deliveries to the Philippines could start a year after a contract signature.

The Philippines is set to re-launch its OV-10 Bronco-replacement programme, with a new request for proposals (RfP) to be issued in the coming months.

Spanish company Expal announced on 18 October that it had signed an agreement with Airbus Defence and Space that will see the company provide engineering support for munitions to be mounted on an Airbus C295W.

Expal said that they would be providing support "for the integration of standard weapons such as 70 mm rockets, as well as the Mk 80 series of bombs".

The announcement from Expal comes after Spanish manufacturer Escribano Mechanical & Engineering said in September that it had signed an agreement with Airbus Defence and Space on the integration of a door-mounted gun system, with in-flight test firing of the weapons system expected in coming months.

Additionally, Airbus Defence and Space signed an agreement at the Farnborough International Air Show in July with Turkish firm Rocketsan, covering the integration of the Cirit 70 mm air-to-surface semi-active laser-guided missile, the UMTAS long-range laser-guided anti-tank missile, and the Teber laser-guided bomb.

The Royal Jordanian Air Force signed a contract in June 2014 with Airbus and Orbital ATK to convert one of its C295 fleet into a gunship configuration, following the country's conversion of two C235 aircraft into AC-235 gunships.

According to information provided by Airbus at the time, the Jordanian C295 gunships are to feature an integrated mission and fire control systems, electro-optical and radar sensors, AGM-114 Hellfire missiles, an Orbital ATK side-mounted M230 30 mm chain gun, an integrated defensive suite, and 70 mm guided rockets.

IHS Jane's understands that the agreements signed with Expal, Escribano, and Rocketsan are part of a programme that is being pursued independently of the Jordanian project, which is still underway.

In Less Than a Year, U.S. Air Force Gunships Flew Nearly 4,000 Hours in Combat

Deadly planes flew secretive missions around the world

When the U.S. Air Force talks about combat power, it usually focuses on fast-flying F-15 and F-16 fighter bombers, hard-hitting A-10 ground attackers and B-1 and B-52 heavy bombers. Less well publicized are the contributions of a fleet of deadly AC-130 gunships.

Since the heavily armed AC-130s often fly secretive missions working with commandos on the ground, the Air Force doesn't generally go into specifics about their activities. But the specialized planes are major contributors to operations around the world.

Between November 2013 and June 2014, AC-130U Spooky IIs from the 4th Special Operations Squadron flew a combined total of almost 4,000 hours in combat, according to one Air Force history. Altogether, seven of the specialized planes spent over 1,175 days deployed overseas.

Flight Tests for Laser-Equipped AC-130 Expected in FY18

Air Force Special Operations Command is "months to maybe a year out" from flight testing a directed energy weapon aboard an AC-130 gunship, its leader said March 3.

Feedback from initial tests of the capability at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, have allowed the command move forward with a proof of concept phase, said Lt. Gen. Marshall "Brad" Webb at the Air Force Association's annual Air Warfare Symposium.

The White Sands tests showed that a low kilowatt laser could be controlled and aimed. Next, "We will take the next step of upping the kilowattage and go from there," he said.

Special Operation Command's program executive office fixed wing has been working to outfit an AC-130J Ghostrider with a laser. Its stated goal is to equip an aircraft with a directed energy weapon by the end of the decade. SOCOM officials have previously discussed the possibility of outfitting an AH-64 Apache helicopter with a laser weapon, and analysts have noted it could also potentially be mounted on an MH-60 Black Hawk.

The command continues to perform tests to see where it could place a laser weapon on the gunship, Webb said.

"There are multiple options that we got to play out," he said. The possibility of placing the weapon in a gunport, or having it support the existing gunships, are options the service is exploring, he added.

"That's what we want to get to: Where does it make sense? What mix of weapons could you go with or should it go with?" he said.

But the command remains short on funding, Webb said.

"We have funding to do the first steps. Over the course of what we want to do with the program, we're still short money-wise, but I am confident ... we'll be able to get more funding," he said, adding that should the command receive more funding in fiscal year 2018, it could possibly go toward directed energy investments.

USAF to declare IOC for AC-130J this month

The commander of U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command disclosed that the service will declare Initial Operating Capability for its newest gunship – AC-130J – later this month.

But the aircraft will not be going into combat anytime soon as the command is lagging behind in training operators for the new variant. Lt. Gen. Marshall Webb says two more years are required before sending it to combat.

Indonesia develops gunship variant of CN-235 aircraft

Key Points
•PT Dirgantara has confirmed plans to market a gunship variant of the CN-235 turboprop aircraft
•Work on a demonstrator platform is currently under way, and the company aims for its first flight in 2019

Indonesian state-owned aircraft manufacturer PT Dirgantara (PTDI) has begun work on a gunship variant of the CN-235 twin-engine multipurpose aircraft, the company has confirmed to Jane's .

The aircraft, which is based on the company's CN-235-220 airframe, is being developed as a demonstrator platform, and will be marketed to potential customers in the Middle Eastern, African, and Central and Southeast Asian regions, said the company.

The aircraft is being modified to carry one single-barrelled 30 mm DEFA 553 aircraft cannon on the portside aft of its fuselage. The weapon has been salvaged from a retired Douglas A-4H Skyhawk that was formerly in service with the Indonesian Air Force (Tentara Nasional Indonesia – Angkatan Udara: TNI-AU).

The DEFA 553 cannon has a muzzle velocity of 810 m/s, and can fire up to 1,200 rds/min at both air and surface targets. There are also plans to complement this weapon with electro-optical targeting systems and a laser designator. However, the company has yet to decide on systems that will be selected for these roles on the demonstrator.

Other differences that the gunship demonstrator will feature over earlier versions of PTDI's CN-235 include using General Electric (GE) CT7-9 turboprop engines, instead of the older CT7-7. The aircraft has also been built with wingtip devices to improve the aircraft's overall fuel efficiency.

US Navy Surface Forces and AC-130W Gunships Conduct Joint Operations in Arabian Gulf

U.S. Navy Cyclone-class patrol coastal ships (PC) and P-8A Poseidon aircraft assigned to U.S. Naval Forces Central Command (NAVCENT) conducted a first of its kind joint exercise with AC-130W Stinger II gunships assigned to Special Operations Command Central (SOCCENT), March 8 and 9.

The exercise, which is designed to enhance the capabilities of U.S. forces to respond to surface threats, involved U.S. Navy P-8 aircraft performing long range reconnaissance and PCs selecting simulated surface targets for the AC-130W to engage.

"Our surface forces integrating with aircraft that have the firepower of an AC-130W brings a capability to the joint force that profoundly enhances our lethality in the maritime environment. The addition of the Gunship to the joint maritime battle significantly enhances our ability to detect, track, engage and defeat surface threats in order to control water space in the Arabian Gulf," said Capt. Peter Mirisola, Commander, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 50/Commander, Combined Task Force (CTF) 55. "The effectiveness of this joint capability to conduct maritime strike, reconnaissance and armed overwatch was clearly displayed during this live-fire event."

The AC-130W is employed in multiple theaters using 30mm, 105mm, and precision guided munitions to execute close air support and air interdiction missions. This exercise marks the first time these assets have been integrated in direct support of maritime security operations in the Arabian Gulf.

While this is the first integration of the AC-130W in this capacity, similar integration operations with Special Operations assets were conducted in the Gulf between U.S. Naval Forces and MH-6M Little Bird helicopters during Operation Earnest Will from 1987 to 1988.

"We've effectively employed similar joint capabilities in the past to counter belligerent forces that attempt to disrupt or hinder the free flow of commerce and freedom of navigation in this region using force, or attack U.S., coalition, or partner forces in a conflict," said Vice Adm. Jim Malloy, commander, NAVCENT. "We will continue to work across component commands and coalition partners to further improve the lethality of our forces through our ability to simultaneously engage a multitude of threats in the Arabian Gulf, Red Sea and adjacent waters."

US trials Stinger II gunships in anti-surface warfare role
..  :hrmph:  tegen oppervlakte doelen ? )

The US military is trialling the use of the Lockheed Martin AC-130W Stinger II gunship in the anti-surface warfare (ASuW) role in the Middle East.

The Department of Defense (DoD) announced on 15 March that US Navy (USN) Cyclone-class patrol coastal ships (PC) and Boeing P-8A Poseidon maritime multimission aircraft (MMA) assigned to US Naval Forces Central Command (NAVCENT) had conducted "a first-of-its-kind" joint exercise with US Air Force (USAF) AC-130W gunships assigned to Special Operations Command Central (SOCCENT) on 8 and 9 March.

According to the DoD, the exercises were designed to enhance the capabilities of US forces to respond to surface threats and involved P-8 aircraft performing long-range reconnaissance ahead of PCs selecting simulated surface targets for the AC-130W to engage.

"This exercise mark[ed] the first time these assets ha[d] been integrated in direct support of maritime security operations in the Arabian Gulf," the DoD said.

The AC-130W Stinger II (formerly known as Dragon Spear) is a gunship-variant of the C-130 Hercules transport aircraft and is flown by the Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC). It is armed with a GAU-23 Bushmaster 30 mm cannon, a 105 mm gun, and stand-off precision-guided munitions such as the Boeing GBU-39 Small Diameter Bomb (SDB) and Raytheon's AGM-176A Griffin missile. AFSOC has 12 such aircraft in its inventory, flying alongside C-130-gunship variants such as the AC-130J Ghostrider.

These joint exercises are in support of the USN's Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 50/Combined Task Force (CTF) 55, which conducts maritime security operations in support of regional security and stability in the 5th Fleet's area of responsibility (AoR) that encompasses about 6.5 million km 2 across the Gulf, Arabian Sea, Gulf of Oman, Red Sea, and parts of the Indian Ocean.

USMC seeks BLOS upgrade for Harvest HAWK gunships

The US Marine Corps (USMC) is looking to upgrade the Harvest Hercules Airborne Weapons Kit (HAWK) mission package for its Lockheed Martin KC-130J tanker-transport aircraft with a beyond-line-of-sight (BLOS) capability.

The request for information (RFI), issued by the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) on 19 May, covers the design, manufacture, test, integration, and installation of a new Harvest HAWK Plus (HH+) BLOS standard.

"The BLOS upgrade addresses the void of battlespace commanders' situational awareness by providing full-motion video and enhanced communications capability within the HH+ Mission Operator Pallet (MOP) via hardware and [Sierra Nevada Corporation] Burma software modifications," the RFI said, noting that responses are due by 17:00 EST on 30 May.

Originally developed to fulfil an urgent operational requirement in Afghanistan, the Harvest HAWK conversion programme equipped the KC-130J with a roll-on/roll-off, dual-screen, fire-control console mounted in a removable cargo platform in the aircraft's cargo compartment, a Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control AN/AAQ-30 Target Sight Sensor mounted under the port-side wing fuel tank, and a Common Data Link. The aircraft's weapons fit comprises four AGM-114P Hellfire II laser-guided, air-to-surface missiles mounted on the port-side refuelling pylon, and MBDA GBU-44/E Viper Strike and Raytheon Griffin A air-to-surface missiles launched from a ramp-mounted 10-round rack and a pressurised dispenser dubbed the 'Derringer Door'. A sideways-firing Mk 44 30 mm cannon has been deferred to a later Block III upgrade set to be implemented from fiscal year 2023.

The C295 Armed ISR has recently conducted flight trials. (Airbus)

The company announced on 20 June that the C295 Armed ISR, as the version is named, recently conducted flight trials with eight laser-guided missiles and two laser-guided bombs dummies, located on four underwing hardpoints. These initial trials were designed to validate the aircraft's mechanical and aerodynamic characteristics when fitted with such a weapons load.

"With the quality and safety of the modification ensured by Airbus as original equipment manufacturer, the C295 Armed ISR provides persistent surveillance with a diverse set of weapons for defensive and attack capabilities," the company said, adding that it can carry out special operations missions, support ground troops, and neutralise targets detected during surveillance and patrol missions, and has a long endurance.

As noted by Airbus, the company signed a series of agreements with air-to-surface weapon suppliers at the Dubai Airshow 2017 to equip the C295. These agreements included a memorandum of understanding with Roketsan of Turkey and similar arrangements have been signed with Expal, Escribano and Equipaer of Spain, as well as Rheinmetall of Germany, and the US suppliers Nobles Worldwide and US Ordnance.

"Equipped with the last generation FITS [Fully Integrated Tactical System], the C295 Armed ISR incorporates different weaponry options available in kits that allow the operator to select the most appropriate option for their requirements: from machine guns, 27 mm autocannon, guided and unguided rockets, laser-guided missiles to laser guided bombs," Airbus said.

Upgraded 105mm Gun Aircraft Unit for the AC-130 delivered to the US Air Force

Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) engineers designed, developed and delivered an upgraded 105mm Gun Aircraft Unit (GAU) specifically made with the AC-130 gunship in mind.

The 105mm GAU allows warfighters on the ground to complete their missions more effectively and safely while the AC-130 provides close air support, air interdiction and force protection.

The new weapon replaces the former gun system and positively impacts the warfighters' ability to operate and maintain the system in the field.

"This has become a much more reliable system with less maintenance," said Matthew Buckler, NSWCDD Battle Management System (BMS) Gun Weapons System lead mechanical engineer. "If we can get a system that's more reliable, that's more repeatable, that works and that allows the warfighter to complete their mission every time – that's a huge benefit for the warfighter."

From the start of the design effort, the Dahlgren engineers behind the 105 mm gun worked directly with the warfighter to get real-time feedback from experienced gunners and technicians.

Engineers on the GAU project traveled to Air Force bases Wright-Patterson, Robins, Eglin, Hurlburt Field and Cannon throughout development for testing and direct collaboration with the warfighter. Gunners and technicians also came to Dahlgren to provide insight on the hardware's performance after testing.

"Personally, this is the most rewarding work I've done in my engineering career hands down," said Gregory Fish, NSWCDD's GAU lead analyst. "It's a fantastic place to work – incredible sense of accomplishment and achievement. And when we get the debriefs of what the weapon effectiveness is out in the field, it makes you feel like you've done something that makes a difference because these [GAU's] are literally the tip of the spear."

The previous iteration of the AC-130's 105mm gun system comprised the M102 Howitzer and M137A1 recoil mechanism, which are no longer supported by the Army, meaning that an upgrade was necessary due to obsolescence and advancements in technologies since the original recoil mechanism was designed.

The upgrades to the 105mm GAU are sweeping, however, the engineers at Dahlgren were careful to ensure that the functionality, accuracy and usability of the weapon remain largely the same.

Throughout the iterative design process, Buckler said the team encountered challenging yet navigable obstacles and tackled each issue as it came.

"We've described [the development process] as peeling back an onion," said Buckler. "You get the most immediate issue and solve that one. Then when you solve that one, something else becomes more important and you kind of just keep peeling it back until you've essentially solved all of your major issues and you can live with whatever the maintenance interval may be."

When a weapon fires thousands of rounds and its recoil accelerates to 350G's, or 350 times the force of gravity, maintenance is a natural consequence of operation. The engineers that led the GAU development also oversee the maintenance training to the warfighters.

The AC-130J Ghostrider's primary missions are close air support, air interdiction and armed reconnaissance. Close air support missions include troops in contact, convoy escort and point air defense. Air interdiction missions are conducted against pre-planned targets or targets of opportunity and include strike coordination and reconnaissance and overwatch mission sets. The AC-130J provides ground forces an expeditionary, direct-fire platform that is persistent, ideally suited for urban operations and delivers precision low-yield munitions against ground targets.

Italian Air Force to deploy MC-27J Praetorian by 2030

The Italian Air Force (Aeronautica Militare Italiana: AMI) has confirmed to Janes that it will deploy the Leonardo MC-27J Praetorian special operations aircraft by 2030.

Speaking to Janes on 27 January, a spokesperson of the press office of the AMI said that the development and serialisation of the Praetorian roll-on/roll-off palletised mission system is scheduled to be completed by 2030.

The AMI's 12 C-27J tactical transport aircraft will continue to perform their passenger/cargo role in addition to new special operations roles (including tactical control; intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance; and communication, command, and control). As a result the service will not procure additional C-27J tactical transport aircraft, the spokesperson said.

In early December 2021, the Italian Defence Staff pointed out during a parliamentary session of its defence committee that at least four Praetorian systems will be developed during three phases, between 2021 and 2030.

AC-130J Gunship Unleashes Hell On South Korean Island

The AC-130J?s deployment to South Korea, part of exercise Teak Knife, is the first time a Ghostrider model of the gunship has operated there.

We recently got an unusually detailed look at a USAF AC-130J Ghostrider gunship using much of its diverse arsenal from a recent military exercise in South Korea. The deployment of the AC-130 ? which is as much a arsenal ship as a gunship these days ? constituted the first time a 'Ghostride' J model, the most recent AC-130 to enter USAF service, has ever gone to that country.

The footage of the AC-130J, which has the tail number ?5852? and is operated by the 4th Special Operations Squadron, part of the 1st Special Operations Wing based at Hurlburt Field, Florida, was captured as part of a month-long U.S.-South Korean exercise. The drill started in early February and is expected to wrap up sometime in early March. The video itself was released by the Republic of Korea?s Joint Chiefs of Staff.

AC-130J Ghostrider Could Get Huge Upgrade From AESA Radar

An active electronically scanned array radar would allow AC-130Js to independently engage targets in any weather and at greater distances.

The U.S. Air Force plans to test an AC-130J Ghostrider gunship equipped with an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar. Adding an AESA would give these aircraft a valuable tool for spotting, tracking, and engaging targets, especially in bad weather and at extended ranges. The radar could perform more general intelligence-gathering and provide improved situational awareness, along with other functions, as well.

The forthcoming AC-130 AESA testing was highlighted during a briefing last week by members of U.S. Special Operations Command's (SOCOM) Program Executive Office for Fixed Wing aircraft (PEO-FW), which The War Zone, among others, attended. That event was held as part of an annual special operations-focused conference now called SOF Week.

"We have a tech demo coming up, where we've got a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement [CRADA] to do an AESA radar on an AC-130 gunship," one of the representatives from PEO-FW said. The testing will help SOCOM "see what capabilities that can help us bring to the fight."

How Pilots Train To Fly The $165 Million AC-130J Ghostrider Gunship

The AC-130J Ghostrider gunship is the newest version of the historic AC-130 aircraft. which dates back to the Vietnam War. Unlike C-130s that are meant to carry cargo and troops, the AC-130, the attack variant. It's retrofitted with a precision weapons package and is able to aid in missions like close air support, air interdiction, and armed reconnaissance.
Insider visited Cannon Air Force Base in Clovis, New Mexico to learn more about the AC-130J and meet the pilots and crews that are being trained to fly it.

AC-130 Laser Weapon Test Slip Raises Questions About Its Future

The future of a laser-armed AC-130J is increasingly uncertain and a broader review of the Ghostrider's armament package is in progress.

Planned flight testing of a high-energy laser directed energy weapon on a U.S. Air Force AC-130J Ghostrider gunship has been pushed back again to next year. This once looked set to be the service's first operational airborne laser weapon. However, the future of this project is ever more uncertain and there is now a broader review of the Ghostrider's armament suite that could see the aircraft lose their 105mm howitzers in the future.

Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) has confirmed to The War Zone that flight tests of the Airborne High Energy Laser (AHEL) on the AC-130J are now set to start in January 2024 and wrap up in June of that year. The goal had originally been for the AHEL to take to the sky on a Ghostrider sometime in the 2022 Fiscal Year. Most recently, the hope had been that this would occur before the end of this year.

USAF AC-130J Ghostrider gunship strikes Iranian-backed militants following missile attack

A U.S. Air Force AC-130J Ghostrider attacked an Iran-backed militant group after the group used a ballistic missile to attack U.S. and coalition forces on Al-Asad Airbase, Iraq, the deputy Pentagon press secretary said on November 21 quoted by C. Todd Lopez.

The ballistic missile attack resulted in non-serious injuries to U.S. and coalition forces, as well as minor damage to infrastructure on the installation, said Sabrina Singh during a briefing at the Pentagon. "Immediately following the attack, a U.S. military AC-130 aircraft in the area conducted a self-defense strike against an Iranian-backed militia vehicle and a number of Iranian-backed militia personnel involved in this attack," she said. "This self-defense strike resulted in some hostile fatalities."

Singh said the AC-130J gunship was able to mount a response so quickly because it was already in the air at the time of the missile attack. "We were able to identify the point of origin of these attacks because an AC-130 was up already in the area and therefore was able to respond," Singh said. "They were able to take action because they saw the militants. They were able to keep an eye on the movement of these militants as they moved into their vehicles and that's why they were able to respond."

Since Oct. 17, U.S. forces have been attacked 66 times in both Iraq and Syria, said Singh. She also said this is the first time a ballistic missile similar to the one used in this attack has been employed.

Since the start of those attacks in October, the U.S. has mounted three other strikes, Singh said. But those strikes were pre-planned and targeted specific facilities and infrastructure known to be used by militias affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. This most recent U.S. response was different in that it was unplanned. "These groups have targeted our forces both Iraq and Syria," Singh said. "We feel right now that we've taken appropriate action to decimate some of their facilities and some of their weapons ... We always reserve the right to respond at a time and place of our choosing."

U.S. Air Force ends AC-130J Ghostrider laser weapon integration efforts

The dream of equipping the AC-130J Ghostrider gunship with a high-energy laser weapon system has come to an end. The U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) has officially shelved its Airborne High Energy Laser (AHEL) program due to "technical challenges" encountered during integration and ground testing.

The AHEL program aimed to provide a covert, low-collateral-damage option for special operations by disabling enemy communication nodes, light vehicles, and power infrastructure with a powerful laser beam. AFSOC initially planned for airborne testing to begin in January 2024, but those plans never materialized.

Due to missing the integration and flight test window for deployment on the AC-130J Ghostrider gunship, AFSOC has shifted its focus to ground testing the AHEL system. This will improve its operational performance and reliability, potentially positioning the technology for transfer to directed-energy programs.

Although the AHEL program specifically for the Ghostrider is canceled, the project may not be entirely dead. The possibility exists for the underlying technology to be adapted for other platforms. One potential beneficiary could be the Self-Protect High-Energy Laser Demonstrator (SHiELD) program, which aims to integrate a laser defense system onto fighter jets for neutralizing incoming missiles.

Developed by Lockheed Martin, the AHEL system was envisioned as a powerful tool for special operations, offering silent and precise engagement capabilities. However, budgetary constraints also played a role in the program's demise. Funding for AHEL was reportedly zeroed out in the 2025 fiscal year budget request, following previous reductions in 2024 and 2023.

The cancelation of the AHEL program highlights the ongoing challenges associated with integrating high-energy laser systems onto airborne platforms. While the technology holds promise for future applications, technical hurdles and budgetary limitations remain significant obstacles to overcome.
