UK cleared to procure additional Chinook helicopters, likely configured for special operations

The United Kingdom is to procure 16 new Boeing H-47 Chinook heavy-lift helicopters, with US State Department approval for the sale being announced on 19 October.

According to the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), which disclosed the approval, the proposed sale comprises 16 Chinooks as well as items of equipment associated with the US special forces' MH-47G variant of the helicopter.

The MH-47G-specific equipment listed in the notification includes extended range ('fat tank') fuel tanks, electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensor turrets, and multimode (terrain-following, terrain-avoidance, and weather detection) radars, with other items including defensive weaponry and countermeasures. The DSCA did not list the aerial refuelling probe normally fitted to the MH-47G, but the helicopter is plumbed for this feature should it be requested at a later date.

If approved by Congress, the sale would be worth USD3.5 billion. This would include training and support.

The UK Royal Air Force (RAF) currently fields 60 Chinooks. These comprise 38 HC4 helicopters, which are equivalent to the US Army's CH-47D-standard plus UK-specific modifications (these aircraft are currently going through a further upgrade process to bring them up to a new HC6A standard); eight HC5 helicopters, which are equivalent to the US Army's MH-47E-standard plus UK-specific modifications; and 14 HC6 helicopters, which are equivalent to the US Army's CH-47F-standard plus UK-specific modifications.

With the oldest of the HC4 Chinooks having been received from 1981, it is likely that the new helicopters will be used to replace these platforms rather than adding to the overall size of the fleet. Also, with the HC5 Chinooks now being employed as part of the wider UK fleet, the new helicopters will likely take on the niche special forces role that these other 'fat tank' platforms were originally acquired for.

Nee lijkt me niet

Tja ... (idd).. ;)

Anderzijds ;
Dan de MH60 en samen met de Denen
of de AW159 en samen met de Britten

German Navy Plans to Replace Fleet of 21 Westland Sea Lynx Anti-Submarine Warfare Helicopters

Naar mijn weten doen er 3 typen mee voor de vervanging, namelijk ;

- MH-60R
- NH90
- AW-159

German Navy Plans to Replace Fleet of 21 Westland Sea Lynx Anti-Submarine Warfare Helicopters

The German navy has begun planning to replace its fleet of 21 Westland Sea Lynx anti-submarine warfare helicopters, which are due to be retired in 2025.

U.S. weapons maker Lockheed Martin Corp and German peer Rheinmetall AG said on Thursday they will make a joint bid to supply the German navy with MH-60R Seahawk helicopters built by Lockheed's Sikorsky unit.

The two firms are also cooperating on a bid to supply new heavy-lift helicopters to the German air force, as announced in February, for a contract that could be worth around 4 billion euros ($4.6 billion).

The German navy has begun planning to replace its fleet of 21 Westland Sea Lynx anti-submarine warfare helicopters, which are due to be retired in 2025.

Europe's Airbus is also likely to bid for the contract with its NH90 Sea Lion multi-role naval helicopter, as is AgustaWestland, part of Italy's Leonardo Finmeccanica SpA, which built the current fleet of helicopters.

"With this Letter of Intent, Rheinmetall and Sikorsky are prepared to strengthen their partnership in support of the German military and look forward to offering the MH-60R Seahawk as the replacement for the current fleet of Sea Lynx helicopters," Sikorsky said in a statement.

Chilean Navy cleared to buy new light helicopters

The Chilean Navy is set to order five new light helicopters in 2019, after receiving authorisation to commit USD6 million to initiate a procurement programme that was launched in 2017 and is currently in its request for information (RFI) phase.

The new aircraft will replace Bell 206-type machines currently in service in roles including liaison, littoral search and rescue, and rotating wing flight training. They are also regularly sent on seagoing deployments onboard offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) and transport vessels.

The budget authorisation will now enable the programme to issue the request for proposals (RFP) to the potential suppliers of the new helicopters.
