:Elbit Systems - Spear 120mm Mobile Mortar System

Elbit Systems Mortar System SPEAR Makes its First Appearance:SOLTAM SPEAR Mobile, Fully Autonomous Soft Recoil Mortar System Will be Presented at the International Fire Conference in Israel

The new patent-pending 120mm light vehicle-mounted Recoil Mortar System provides ground forces with improved mobility, lethality and accuracy across a wide range of operational scenarios

Haifa, Israel, 19 May, 2014 Elbit Systems will showcase its latest autonomous Recoil Mortar System (RMS) for lightweight 4x4 combat vehicles at the 3rd International Fire Conference, held May 10-22, 2014, at Home of the Gunners in Zikron Yaakov, Israel.

Introducing a revolutionary technology, the advanced 2nd generation RMS reduces 120mm gun barrel firing recoil loads from 30 to less than 10 tons, enabling adaptability with previously non-installable Light Combat Vehicles (LCVs), such as (Humvees), jeeps and more. This capability significantly improves the maneuverability and operational performance of infantry forces, as it delivers immediate indirect artillery support for effectively engaging a wide range of targets.

SOLTAM SPEAR's lightweight, modular design enables high-speed, all-terrain vehicle mobility, as well as helicopter and cargo aircraft transportability - allowing rapid deployment in both close range and Special Forces counterinsurgency operations. SOLTAM SPEAR is equipped with cutting-edge fire control, navigation, automatic aiming and propulsion systems, which facilitate a fully-autonomous operation and provide increased fire power and accuracy (within 30 meters of the Circular Error Probability (CEP) radius. In addition, the RMS advanced target data collection and identification capabilities enhance situational awareness and increase crew survivability. SOLTAM SPEAR is offered both independently as a standalone installation or as an integral part of a larger artillery unit or formation. It is compatible with all types of 120mm smooth bore mortar systems and munitions.

Yehuda (Udi) Vered, General Manager of Elbit Systems Land and C4I, noted: Elbit Systems is a world leader in the field of mortar systems, and the CARDOM mortar is already in use by the IDF and other leading armed forces around the world. The SPEAR provides our customers with a broader range of capabilities and further establishes our leading position in this field. SPEAR addresses the operational demand for agile, accurate and precise mobile fire power, which enables operation deep within combat zones and the deployment of Special Forces. The full integration of SPEAR into Elbit Systems C4I systems allows rapid closure of sensor-to-shooter loops and enhanced operational effectiveness for ground forces.

ATK-GD OTS Team to Deliver the Marines with Precision Mortar Bombs

ATK and General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems (GD-OTS) have both announced they will submit bids for the Marine Corps' requirements for the rifled, 120mm Precision Extended Range Mortar (PERM). The Marine Corps is planning to award contracts for the PERM development and demonstration phase, by mid-2012 with demonstration tests expected by 2014 and production contract awarded in 2015.

On October 4 ATK announced it will be teaming with GD-OTS to offer a full-up solution for the U.S. The new guided munition will provide the Corps' Expeditionary Fire Support System (EFSS) towed-mortar the option to engage point targets from ranges of 16 – 20km. ATK announced it will be the prime contractor to the USMC for the PERM Engineering and Manufacturing Development (EMD) program, providing the guidance fuze technology, to be combined with the propulsion and warhead subsystems delivered by General Dynamics. ATK is already providing a similar solution for the U.S. Army 120mm mortars.

The Marine Corps anticipates PERM guided bombs will expand the effect of its Expeditionary Fire Support mortar System to engage targets at distances up to 20 km. , with precision of 20 meters and up to 10 meters. Photo: U.S. Marine Corps.
Three days later, GD-OTS also announced it will also submit a proposal for the PERM program, positioning itself as a prime contractor for the program. For its bid GD-OTS will employ its own technologies, already demonstrated with mortar munitions, such as the Roll Control Guided Mortar (RCGM) and Extended-Range Rocket-Assisted Propulsion system. The 120mm RCGM provides a low-cost guided mortar solution, as it employs a standard M934A1 mortar warhead and M734A1 fuze components, and patented Roll-Controlled Fix Canard (RCFC) technology. It uses GPS guidance to provide an effective, truly affordable precision-strike capability. In March 2011, General Dynamics successfully guided 120mm mortar rounds to less than 10 m CEP at both minimum and maximum range in test firings at the Yuma Proving Grounds, Arizona. All live test rounds detonated successfully and were demonstrated in proximity, point detonate and delay fuze modes. In October 2009, the company also successfully demonstrated 120mm rocket-assisted mortars fired from the M327 rifled mortar at ranges from 17 to 18 km. General Dynamics has been marketing and supporting the 2R2M 120mm (M327) rifled mortar selected for the EFSS. The mortar was originally built by the TDA Armaments, a joint venture between France's Thales and the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Co. (EADS).

In service with the marine Corps since 2009, the EFSS is a light, mobile and air-transportable mortar system designed for missions requiring tactical versatility, speed, and close-in fire support. The system is composed of a pair of Prime Mover vehicles, the 120mm M327 weapon, the four-round family of munitions and an ammunition trailer. It is designed to be internally transportable in the MV-22B Osprey and the CH-53 helicopter. GD-OTS is currently producing the ammunition for this mortar system. The current M-327 ammunition suite utilizes a standard Insensitive Munition (IM) based High Explosive (HE), Smoke, Illumination and Practice rounds, offering an effective range of 8.2 km. The standard fuse fitted to the projectiles provides point detonation or airburst capabilities.

Raytheon Test-Fires New GPS-Guided Mortar for Marines

(https://www.defensieforum.nl/Forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.defensetech.org%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2014%2F12%2Fsoldiers-and-marines-conduct-mortar-training-in-the-horn-of-africa-490x366.jpg&hash=a5775bb337c2ab4c7fe5e3e9bd7b557afd297c5a)

Raytheon recently test-fired a new GPS-guided 120mm mortar round at Yuma Proving Grounds, Ariz., demonstrating a precision-firing technology designed to help Marine Corps commanders in combat.

The Marine Corps program, called Precision Extended Range Mortar, or PERM, is aimed at developing and fielding precision-guided mortar rounds able to better pinpoint targets compared to existing mortar rounds.

The rounds are configured with a GPS antenna and an inertial measurement unit, or IMU, which tells the round how it is flying, said Raytheon program manager Ty Blanchard.

In a recent test-firing, three rounds landed within 10 meters or less of the desired target, Blanchard explained.
"Three of the GPS-guided rounds flew to the required range and hit within the required distance of their targets. One round was fired to the minimum range requirement and impacted just a few meters from an off-axis target," Blanchard added.

The rounds were fired from a Marine Corps M327 120mm Rifled Towed Mortar. Raytheon and Israeli Military Industries are jointly developing PERM.

The idea with PERM rounds is to give a combat commander the ability to destroy an enemy target at longer ranges using fewer rounds. A typical mortar round travels about seven to eight kilometers. the PERM rounds can reach distances up to 16 kilometers, Blanchard added.

"It has an extended range so you don't need as many mortar systems to cover a specific area. Also, it requires less personnel and fewer rounds. You don't need to fire as many rounds to hit a target so that reduces your logistics train. The second and third order effects are massive," Blanchard explained. "You can do a  lot more pre-mission planning. There are a litany of advantages which give the commander so much more flexibility.

PERM rounds are engineered with small fins called canards designed to increase glide and extend the range of the weapon.

"We get lift from the canards so we are able to glide and reach longer ranges. We developed this round with Marine Corps funding and we will deliver 42 rounds to the Marine Corps next month," Blanchard said.

The Marine Corps plans an upcoming shoot-off of GPS-guided mortar rounds between Raytheon and ATK, Blanchard said. The winning vendor will be awarded a procurement contract to deliver rounds to the Corps.

In the future, Raytheon plans to add semi-active laser guidance to its PERM round in order to increase the options provided to commanders.
While PERM is primarily being developed for the Marine Corps, the round is able to fire from an Army smooth-bore mortar tube as well as from a Corps rifle tube, Blanchard added.

Raytheon Precision Extended Range Munition (PERM) Tests Successful

(https://www.defensieforum.nl/Forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1.wp.com%2Fwww.defensemedianetwork.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2014%2F12%2FPERM.jpg%3Ffit%3D720%252C9999&hash=f615821dbfdc6561c996303a36c5246334885e8f)
Raytheon announced that four PERM rounds were successfully fired in testing, performing to requirements.

Raytheon announced today that the company successfully fired four Precision Extended Range Munition (PERM) 120mm guided projectiles during testing at Yuma Proving Ground. Three of the GPS-guided rounds reached the required range and hit within the required distance of their targets, according to a company release. One round was fired to the minimum range requirement, striking just a few meters from an off-axis target.

The four rounds, fired from the U.S. Marine Corps M327 120mm rifled towed mortar – also known as the Expeditionary Fire Support System (EFSS) – met all test objectives, according to Raytheon.

(https://www.defensieforum.nl/Forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1.wp.com%2Fwww.defensemedianetwork.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2014%2F12%2FEFSS-firing.jpg%3Fresize%3D366%252C550&hash=78250609e713a2dfec5aa48c1fb56be8906b75df)
Marines from Charlie Battery, 1st Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment, test the Expeditionary Fire Support System M327 120mm mortar at Pohakuloa Training Area. The PERM round is being developed to provide a precision fire capability for the system.

"These firings, combined with earlier environmental lab and integration tests, demonstrate PERM's maturity," said Dr. Tom Bussing, vice president of Raytheon's Advanced Missile Systems. "The testing also shows the high level of integration between the munition's guidance, navigation and control functions."

The EFSS is a mobile, quick response indirect fire system usually towed behind an Internally Transportable Vehicle. A precision munition for the rifled mortar was a key capability sought by the Marine Corps. PERM is designed to provide Marines with a lethal, extended range, high probability one-shot capability. Raytheon and Israeli Military Industries jointly developed the munition, and expect to deliver 42 PERM rounds for additional testing later this year.

(https://www.defensieforum.nl/Forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.israeldefense.co.il%2Fsites%2Fdefault%2Ffiles%2Fstyles%2Ffull_article_image%2Fpublic%2F_Uploads%2FdbsArticles%2FIMG_7896_0.JPG%3Fitok%3DE_3v5O07&hash=a2a36b5fd51677b1cbfc0272d7c88bc217a94ef9)

At ADEX 2016, reports Army Recognition, Elbit Systems and the defense vehicles manufacturer Plasan join forces to propose a new version of the Sandcat 4x4 light-armored vehicle fitted with the SPEAR MK2 on the rear of the vehicle.

Plasan's Sandcat is customized for both military and homeland security purposes, such as SWAT missions and counter-insurgency activity. It is based on an upgraded Ford F-Series 4x4 chassis, adapted by Oshkosh Corporation for military use and fitted with Plasan-designed and manufactured modular armor made of advanced Metal Composite & Ceramics Composite Kitted Hull structure.

Elbit Systems' SPEAR MK2 is a fully autonomous, vehicle-mounted 120mm soft recoil mortar system for high-mobility platforms. SPEAR MK2 delivers effective fire support by combining the flexibility and lethality of accurate mortar fire with exceptional tactical mobility. The mortar is a derivative of the combat-proven soft recoil mortar which is muzzle loaded and turntable-mounted and is being used extensively by the US Army, NATO, IDF and others.

The SPEAR MK2 is equipped with computerized aiming and navigation devices, enabling the mortar system to be operated autonomously and aimed without the need for external reference points. SPEAR MK2 can be integrated with a variety of battle management systems (BMS) and includes technical fire management, scheduled fire plans, a prioritization target process and an attack result forecast. The system also manages ammunition, personnel, assignments and serial number equipment reports.

The system can operate independently with forward observers and/or deployed forces. The system can also be deployed on a standalone basis or as part of the battery/platoon configuration.

Targeting information is relayed to the fire control system (FCS) which computes the ballistic data and orders the electric drive system (EDS) to position the mortar barrel to the exact azimuth and elevation. The mortar fire control system (MFCS) receives feedback from the north finding system (NFS) and inclination gauge units (IGU).

Patria Nemo Container includes all the equipment required by a mortar unit in a single package. The Nemo Container is delivered with everything that a mortar unit needs: protection for the crew, the weapon and ammunition. The container has its own power unit and air conditioning. In addition to an access hatch, the container has an escape hatch.

The customer can select NBC (Nuclear, Biological and Chemical) filtration systems, as well as the desired ballistic protection, made either of steel plates or ceramic armour. High-durability steel plating 8 to 10mm thick adds around three tons to the weight of the container. The container has space for one hundred mortar bombs. It has a crew of three: two loaders and a gunner, who also acts as the commander of the unit. The key benefit of the Patria Nemo Container is its easy mobility, which is unique to mortar systems of this caliber.

The container can be easily moved into a firing position on a high-speed boat, a ship or on a truck; the container can also fire from any of these carriers and naturally also from the ground. For example, the container's versatile mobility enables coastal jaeger platoons to relocate this independent firing unit during a mission. This is also an excellent solution for protecting military bases. The container can also be purchased as a separate unit without the weapon system, in which case the customer can make cost-effective use of its existing Nemo equipment.

Patria Nemo Container, showcased for the first time at the IDEX 2017, has completed successfully its first test firings both on truck platform as well as a stand-alone on land.

Test firings for Patria Nemo Navy Container conducted successfully

The latest member of Patria's Game Changers of the Battlefield – Patria Nemo Container has undergone vigorous test firings of its 120mm mortar in demanding sea conditions on board Fast Supply Vessel in Sweden. Together with the successful land tests earlier on Sisu E13TP 8x8 off-road truck, these naval tests verified that Patria Nemo Container truly opens a whole new market segment for Patria's turreted mortar systems.

The tests mainly concentrated on the functionality of the Patria Nemo Container in sea conditions with various firing modes, including firing on the move. Another important aspect was testing of the interface of the Patria Nemo Container and the vessel in general in harsh sea conditions and, especially while performing fire missions.

Patria Nemo Container together with the Fast Supply Vessel was performing as expected and the ground-breaking concept of the 20 ft sea container with 120 mm turreted mortar system was proving its ingenuity also as a naval weapon system. It was able to operate as a mobile firing unit, both with direct and indirect fire, thus being ideal for supporting the battle of the coastal jaeger troops / coastal rangers / marines etc. More importantly, Nemo Container proved that it is as mobile and agile as its "brothers" directly integrated onto land (Patria Nemo) or naval platforms (Patria Nemo Navy).

Patria Nemo Container was functioning perfectly on board – this time on the Swedish Fast Supply Vessel. Rapid response, accuracy, shoot & scoot, firepower, protection, mobility - all the characteristics of Patria's Game Changers of the Battlefield were proven.

Finland, Sweden interested in NEMO Container

Finland's Patria has provided Jane's with an update on the NEMO Container 120 mm mortar system, following on from extensive testing in the Baltic Sea last year.

According to Kari Reunamäki, Patria's vice-president for Weapon Systems, the design of the system is now locked down following on from at-sea, on-the-move firing testing.

Previous firing tests had involved firing from a static position, as well as from a truck, and on-the-move from a truck. While the system is entirely modular – based on a standard 20 ft long International Standards Organisation (ISO) shipping container and can be mounted on many truck systems, the truck-mounted tests involved a Finnish Sisu truck.

Toevallig heeft ST Engineering Land Systems een nieuwe versie van de 120 mm mortier ontwikkeld, ik heb geen idee of het een goed systeem is of dat het niets bijzonders is;
(IDEX 2019 ?)

IDEX 2018: Singapore's ST Engineering launches SRAMS 120 mm Mk II

Singapore's ST Engineering Land Systems has completed the development and testing of new version of its 120 mm Super Rapid Advanced Mortar System (SRAMS), called the Mk II, and new ammunition for it.

The original 120 mm SRAMS featured hydraulic elevation and traverse, but the latest SRAMS Mk II has all-electric elevation and traverse with the latter increased to 180 o left and right, according to James Soon of ST Engineering Land Systems. This is laid onto the target using a computerised fire control system (FCS) by the operator, via a flat panel display and associated controls. It can fire 10 rounds a minute.

The latest suite of ST Engineering 120 mm ammunition includes the PM120 precision guided mortar bomb (PG MB), Extended Range High Explosive (ER HE), ER Infra-Red Red Phosphorous (IR RP) and ER Illuminating. These are all designed for use with smoothbore mortar systems.

The 120 mm PM120 is GPS guided and the company quoted a maximum range of up to 8.5 km and a circular error probable (CEP) of 10 m. The HE warhead contains 2.8 kg of TNT. ER HE also contains 2.8 kg of TNT but this can be insensitive munition (IM) compliant if requested by the customer and is fitted with a DM111A4/A5 nose mounted fuze. Toevallig heeft ST Engineering Land Systems een nieuwe versie van de 120 mm mortier ontwikkeld, ik heb geen idee of het een goed systeem is of dat het niets bijzonders is;

Switzerland ready to buy Cobra 120 mm mortar systems

Following extensive trials, the Swiss Army is expected to place a contract for a new 120 mm self-propelled (SP) mortar system in the next 6-12 months, according to Captain Lars Kristian Lehman of the Swiss Armed Forces.

Capt Lehman revealed the forthcoming contract in March at the Omega Conferences & Events' Mortar Systems Conference in Bristol, UK. A contract signing has been expected since the Swiss Army first began firing trials with the system in May 2016.

When fielded, the 120 mm SP mortar system will fill a gap in the army's indirect firepower capability, between its 81 mm mortar systems and its 155 mm/47-calibre upgraded M109L47 series self-propelled artillery systems.

The Swiss Army plans to order 32 RUAG Defence 120 mm Cobra turntable-mounted smoothbore mortar systems that are to be mounted in the rear of new General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS)-MOWAG 8×8 Piranha 3+ armoured vehicle (Piranha 4 in Swiss service).

RUAG Defence is to supply the 120 mm mortar systems to GDELS-MOWAG, who will integrate them into the newbuild Piranha 4 8×8s that have a slightly raised roofline to the rear to accommodate the mortar. That work will be undertaken at the main GDELS-MOWAG facility at Kreuzlingen, Switzerland, where the Piranha family of vehicles is manufactured.

The system is to have a crew of four (driver, commander, and two ammunition loaders), a maximum gross vehicle weight of up to 30 tonnes, and a maximum road speed of 90 km/h.

Standard equipment will consist of a remote weapon station armed with a .50 M2 HB machine gun and banks of electrically operated smoke grenade launchers.

In addition to the Cobra systems, the Swiss Army also plans to buy 16 Piranha II 8×8 armoured personnel carriers that will be rerolled into the command post role, 12 armoured ammunition resupply vehicles, and 36 flat rack ammunition containers.

Patria demos Nemo 120 mm mortar in United States

Finland's Patria said its120 mm Nemo (New Mortar) turret, integrated onto its Armoured Modular Vehicle (AMV) 8×8, has conducted a firepower demonstration in the United States.

These trials were done at Yuma Proving Ground, Arizona, and Fort Benning, Georgia, and included indirect and direct target engagements as well as Multiple Round Simultaneous Impact (MRSI) fire missions, Kari Reunamäki, Patria's senior vice-president for Weapon Systems Land, told Jane's . The latest demonstration was at Fort Benning in September.

Patria said the 120 mm Nemo turret weighs 1.9 tonnes. For trials, the AMV carried 60×120 mm mortar bombs supplied by Belgium's Mecar (now France's Nexter Munitions).

Nemo's main role is indirect fire support, but it can also do direct fire missions against bunkers and other battlefield targets. It is also capable of coming into action within 30 seconds and can come out of action immediately.

In 2018 the US Army began a market survey "to identify capable sources to develop and produce the 120mm Mortar Future Indirect Fire Turret (FIFT)", according the service's official notice.

Scorpion: Contract Awarded for Mounted Mortar Systems on the Griffon

On the 30th of December 2019, the French defence procurement agency (DGA) awarded the sixth contract amendment on the SCORPION programme to the consortium1 formed by Nexter, Arquus and Thales.

This latest award, known as MEPAC2, covers the delivery of 54 additional Griffon multi-role armoured vehicles (VBMR3) equipped with Thales's 120-mm 2R2M (Rifled Recoiled Mounted Mortar) system, reaching the total number of Griffon vehicles on the SCORPION program to 1,872 in accordance with the Military Planning Law 2019-2025.

Since consultations began in November 2018, the three industry partners have worked together and with the DGA to design a new version of the vehicle concept with artillery capabilities.

This is the first time the French Army will field the 2R2M, which is already in service in four other countries. The mounted mortar system will provide added mobility and precision in front-line combat operations as well as better protection for soldiers. In particular, the Thales system has built its reputation on its semi-automatic loading system and the precision of its rifled barrel, and has been combat-proven in numerous theatres of operations.

US Army to Evaluate Patria Nemo 120mm Mortar System     ( misschien ook wel iets voor de USMC )

Patria and the U.S. Army Entered into Agreement for a Feasibility Study of Patria Nemo 120 Mm Mortar System

Finland's Patria and the US Army have agreed to assess the capabilities of the Patria Nemo mortar system, seen here mounted on an AMV 8x8 infantry combat vehicle, and its compatibility with U.S. Army equipment.

U.S. Army's Combat Capabilities Development Command Armaments Center and Patria have signed a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) to determine feasibility of incorporating a turreted, breech-loaded 120 mm mortar weapon system in U.S. mortar carriers.

The scope of the agreement is to assess the capabilities of Patria Nemo mortar system, its compatibility with U.S. mortar carrier weapon platforms and fire control systems as well as to evaluate the use of current U.S. 120 mm mortar ammunition in a breech-loaded mortar, such as Patria Nemo.

This agreement is continuation of U.S. Army's effort to provide Armored and Stryker Brigade Combat Teams with rapid, precise indirect and direct fire capability where the operating crew is well protected, and their physical burden is significantly reduced. In late 2018 the Army published a market survey to identify capable sources to develop and produce the 120 mm Mortar Future Indirect Fire Turret (FIFT). Patria answered the market survey based on Patria Nemo mortar system.

Patria Nemo is a turreted, remote-controlled 120 mm mortar system with both direct and indirect fire capability and can execute up to 6 grenade multiple rounds simultaneous impact fire missions. In addition to being highly protected, Patria Nemo is light, compact and easily installable on light, tracked chassis, wheeled armored vehicles or navy vessels.

"The agreement between the U.S Army and Patria exemplifies the capability leap that modern turreted mortar systems can introduce to armed forces and illustrates Patria's leading role in this technology area. It is also logical continuation to the cooperation between Patria and the U.S. Government that began with Patria Nemo sales to a third country through a Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program", says Jussi Järvinen, President of Patria's Land Business Unit.

U.S. Army to demonstrate the capabilities of Patria Nemo 120 mm mortar system through Foreign Comparative Testing

(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0KlHiBZEvZc/X5FAvGz8gGI/AAAAAAAAivE/iwRIK5ZKqw8qdYVP6RdrCeyYIU1n6Pq-gCLcBGAsYHQ/w1200-h630-p-k-no-nu/Patria%2Bagreement%2Bwith%2BUS%2BArmy%2Bto%2Bconduct%2Btests%2Bwith%2BPatria%2BNEMO%2B120mm%2Bmortar%2Bturret%2B925%2B001.jpg)

Patria has entered into an agreement with the U.S. Army to conduct a turreted mortar feasibility study in the form of Foreign Comparative Testing (FCT). The testing complements ongoing cooperation between Patria and the U.S. Army on a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) announced in May.

The study consists of several tests and demonstrations in the U.S. and Finland. Through these events Patria and the Army are testing Patria Nemo 120 mm turreted mortar system performance with U.S. ammunition and against U.S. requirements.

This agreement is a continuation of the U.S. Army's effort to provide Armored and Stryker Brigade Combat Teams with rapid, precise indirect and direct fire capability where the operating crew is well protected, and their physical burden is significantly reduced. In 2018 and 2020 the Army published market surveys to identify capable sources to develop and produce the 120 mm Modular Turreted Mortar System (MTMS). Patria answered the market surveys based on Patria Nemo mortar system.

Patria Nemo is the world's foremost turreted mortar system. It is a remote-controlled 120 mm mortar system capable of both direct and indirect fire missions – including on the move. Nemo can execute multiple rounds simultaneous impact (MRSI) fire missions with up to 6 rounds hitting the target at the same time. In addition to being highly protected, Patria Nemo is light, compact and easily installed on light, tracked chassis, wheeled armored vehicles or navy vessels.

"The purpose of FCT programs is to find, assess, and field world-class products with a high technology readiness level in order to satisfy defense requirements more quickly and economically. We are convinced that these study and test efforts we conduct together with the U.S. Army demonstrate Patria Nemo's unique capabilities compared to any other mortar system. Nemo as a mature fielded product - coupled with our clear growth potential vision - provide a future-proof and low-risk solution to existing and new customers. And for the U.S. Armed Forces our cooperation with Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace exemplify that we are committed to provide a system that is manufactured in the U.S.," says Jussi Järvinen, President of Patria's Land Business Unit.

Patria Nemo mobile mortar now able to fire on the move

Patria has finalized the qualification of the fire-on-the-move capability on land-based systems in both direct and indirect fire missions. This new outstanding feature of the Patri Nemo allows troops to be in constant movement during the fire mission and therefore it does not form a clear target for the counter-battery fire.

With the fire-on-the-move capability locating a target, aiming and opening the fire is remarkably faster and more efficient without stops in the fire mission. So, Patria Nemo is a real game changer on the battlefield.

As a turreted, light-weight and remote-controlled 120 mm mortar system with a high level of mobility, protection and accuracy, Patria Nemo is capable of both direct and indirect fire. One of the features that makes Patria Nemo mortar system particularly advanced is its fire-on-the-move capability. "Patria has originally developed the fire-on-the-move capability for Patria Nemo Navy version several years ago, but due to tightened customer expectations and the prospects of the battlefield, the development was taken a step further", explains Kari Reunamäki, Vice President of the weapon systems business line.

Patria Nemo mortar system, weighing 1,900 kg, has a full 360º traverse and weapon elevation from -3 up to 85 degrees. Depending on the platform, vehicle equipped with Patria Nemo can stow 50-60 rounds of 120 mm ammunition. Patria Nemo enables the full potential of modern mortar systems with its usability on land and at sea, operation on the move, and high level of protection and firepower.

Israel reveals its new laser and GPS guided mortar ammunition Iron Sting

According to information released by the Israeli Ministry of Defense on March 14, 2021, the Directorate of Defense Research and Development (R&D) from the Israeli Ministry of Defense, the IDF's (Israeli Defense Forces) Ground Forces and Elbit Systems reveal the new laser and GPS guided mortar ammunition named "Iron Sting".
The new Iron Sting laser and GPS guided mortar ammunition was launched from the Cardom mortar system mounted on M113 tracked APC Armored Personnel Carrier. vehicle

The new 120 mm guided mortar ammunition has recently undergone final trials in a testing site in southern Israel. The completion of testing enables the start of serial production ahead of the system's supply to the IDF (Israel Defense Forces).

The series of tests was carried out using two networked Cardom mortar systems that were developed by Elbit Systems: a "Cardom" system, mounted on an M113 APC and a "Cardom spear" system, mounted on a Hummer 4X4 SUV. The Iron Sting is designed to engage targets precisely, in both open terrains and urban environments, while reducing the possibility of collateral damage and preventing injury to non-combatants. Its operational use will revolutionize ground warfare and equip battalions with organic, accurate and effective firepower.

The CARDOM is an autonomous, computerized 120 mm recoiling mortar system suitable for a variety of tracked and wheeled armored carriers. The CARDOM provides accurate, effective and immediate fire support for rapid deployment units and Special Forces, as well as for infantry and artillery units.

After ten years of research and development, the Israeli army will be equipped with advanced capabilities made for the modern battlefield. This laser and GPS- guided mortar ammunition provides troops with a precise firing capability that has only been implemented in missiles and air ammunition thus far. This is a very complex program and a groundbreaking system on the international level.

The introduction of this laser and GPS-guided ammunition transforms the mortar system from statistical firepower into a precision fire system, thus delivering a significant change in fire capabilities at the tactical level.

The technology made available to the IDF by Israeli industries changes the battlefield and provides our forces with more accurate and effective means. The integration of "Iron Sting" in the IDF, corresponds to the vision presented in the military's "Tnufa" multi-year plan. It also fulfills the IDF's needs, adapting combat capabilities to contend with enemies hidden within civilian, urban environments, while meeting the legal and moral standards set by the State of Israel, said the Israeli Minister of Defense Benny Gantz.

Swedish army orders more Grkpbv 90 armored mortar carriers from Hägglund Bofors

The Swedish Armed Forces Materiel Administration has placed an order at Hägglund Bofors Utveckling for twenty additional Granatkastaranscarband 90 (Grkpbv 90) armored mobile mortars. The order value is approximately SEK 500 million and delivery to the Armed Forces is planned for 2023 to 2025.

FMV recently delivered 40 grenade launcher (or mortar) armored vehicles 90 (Grkpbv 90). They are based on a chassis of the CV 90 (Combat Vehicle 90) with a newly developed turret fitted with a grenade launcher function. FMV is now ordering another twenty vehicles and integrating the army's new command support system, LSS Mark, into these and into the 40 already delivered vehicles. Deliveries are planned for the period 2023 to 2025.

By the end of 2016, the Swedish Defence Material Administration (FMV) had signed an agreement with HB Development (HB Utveckling AB, the joint venture between BAE Systems Bofors AB and BAE Systems Hägglunds AB) for the production and delivery of 40 120mm mortar carriers Grkpbv 90 to the Swedish army.

The first 4 vehicles were to be used for training, method tests and validation. The first regular vehicles were delivered in August 2019, and the other ones in 2020.

The Granatkastarpansarbandvagn 90 (Grkpbv90) is a grenade launcher carrier expected to act as an artillery system based on the Combat Vehicle 90 (CV90), a family of tracked combat vehicles. These vehicles are equiped with their own navigation system, the POS2.

Grkpbv90 enables fast grouping, shooting and regrouping. The crew can operate under the constant protection of the hull, without needing to reload the mortars from outside. The new contract will provide the Armed Forces with more indirect firepower and support for the mechanized battalions.

The additional Grkpbv 90s are part of a larger modernization program of the Swedish Combat Vehicle 90 fleet that will both extend the life of the vehicles, add new capabilities and introduce the army's new command support system.

Grkpbv90 has a crew of 4: driver, vehicle commander (who is also the shooter), and 2 loaders.
