Indo Defence 2018: France eyes Indonesian submarine expansion

Indonesia has its sights set on the acquisition of additional attack submarines beyond the three Nagapasa-class boats that are currently being delivered. One company that is looking to fulfil this requirement is France's Naval Group which will be present at Indo Defence 2018 to promote its Scorpene submarine. In 2011 the Indonesian Navy selected the three Chang Bogo class, known as the Nagapasa-class in Indonesia, which is based on the German Type 209 hull design and built under license in the Republic of Korea by DSME.

While no formal decision has been made it is understood that a targeted fleet of ten to 12 submarines is desired by the Indonesian Navy. Currently, it has four submarines in its fleet and one Nagapasa-class still to be delivered. 'Naval Group, as a recognised naval platform designer and manufacturer together with its unique experience of Transfer of Technology in export programme, is ready to offer the Scorpene class submarine together with adapted Transfer of Technology in accordance with the New Defence Bill issued by the Indonesian government,' said a Naval Group spokesperson.

The company is also looking at the potential of building in-country and said that its main industrial partner will be the state-owned shipyard PT PAL. Members of the PINHANTANAS (Private Defence Industry Association) could be suitable industrial partner the spokesperson said. 'The operational requirements of the Indonesian Navy tend to be oceanic with shallow waters capabilities. Our Scorpene-class submarine offers unmatched capabilities in both oceanic and shallow water,' he added.

While the company has not built the latest batch of submarines for the South East Asian nation the company is well implemented in the region with the active P-75 programme in India. This will provided six Scorpene diesel-electric submarines to the Indian Navy.  Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems TKMS, the design owner of the Type 209 which it acquired after the merger of TKMS and Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft, is also set to be at Indo Defence and will likely be vying for the same opportunities as Naval Group.

HSWMW GOTLAND BEGINT AAN DE SEA TRIALS BIJ DE SAAB WERF IN KARLSKRONA

31 October 2018

#china has again launched a new class of #Submarines which western observers were not aware of until it cropped up on Chinese social media and forums.

Hi Sutton heeft er ook een kort artikel over geschreven.
http://www.hisutton.com/Chinese_Experimental_Submarine.html

Euronaval 2018: Components for A26 submarines will be built in Poland

During the international armament trade fair Euronaval 2018 in Paris, an industrial cooperation agreement was signed between the Swedish industrial group Saab and the Polish company FAMOR SA from Bydgoszcz. As part of this agreement, on-board monitoring systems for new generation A26 submarines will be produced in Poland.

The Polish-Swedish cooperation agreement was signed by the president of the Saab Kockums shipyard, Gunnar Wieslander and the president of Famor Jacek Łosiakowski. This event was important not only because of financial benefits for industry in Poland but also for image-related reasons. The Euronaval military marathon in Paris is one of the largest and most important events of this kind in the world and information about the contract concluded there was noticed not only in Poland and Sweden.

All observers present at the fair learned, therefore, that there are Polish companies that are able to meet the strict requirements that manufacturers of equipment and equipment for submarines have to meet. This is also an important signal from Saab, that he is interested in participating in the Polish technical modernization program, not only in the form of a declaration, but already performing certain concrete actions.

This is the second order for components for Swedish A26 submarines, which the Saab group has concluded with Polish companies. A similar contract was signed by the Swedes with the company Base Group from Koszwał (Cedry Wielkie commune) - a well-known contractor for welded steel structures.

The most important, however, seems to be the earlier contract with Stocznia Remontowa "Nauta" SA, which is part of Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa for the construction of a reconnaissance ship for the Swedish Navy. It is important especially since this unit was designed by the Polish construction office MMC Ship Design & Marine Consulting and PGZ Stocznia Wojenna is a subcontractor of "Nauta", responsible for the construction of the ship's hull (which will be 74 m long and displacement of about 2,200 tons).

During Euronaval 2018, Swedes revealed that Famor is to supply consoles (without software) to A26 subsystems that monitor on-board systems (and therefore not consoles of the Battle Information Center). They will be installed not only on Swedish ships, but also on units possibly ordered by other countries (including perhaps Poland as part of the Orka program).

During Euronaval, Swedes stressed that the contract signed with FAMOR is proof of the existence in Poland of companies that can produce equipment that meets the high standards of submarines. Saab would like the Polish industrial base to exist in the event of a possible order under the Orka program, which could start cooperation immediately. The Swedes emphasize that this cooperation does not depend only on whether or not a contract for Polish submarines will be signed with them. They remind that even if they are not taken in proceedings for new submarines, Poland and Sweden will still remain neighboring countries. Therefore, close industrial cooperation between our countries should be something completely natural.

Brazilian Navy chief says new nuclear submarine will be delayed until late 2020s

Brazil's new modern nuclear submarine, which was initially expected to enter service as early as 2021, will now likely be delayed until the end of that decade, according to Admiral Eduardo Bacellar Leal Ferreira, commander of the Brazilian Navy.

The submarine should be ready "by the late 2020s", Adm Leal Ferreira said recently.

Brazil and France signed a deal for the Submarine Development Program (PROSUB) on December 2008, but a decade later, construction of the nuclear submarine, Álvaro Alberto (SN-10), has yet to commence. The schedule has been regularly modified, and at one point it was expected that construction would begin in 2015 and be completed by 2021.

Revised Dimensions for Turkish REIS-class Submarines

Public domain information seen by MONCh at the SAHA exhibition held in Istanbul in September indicates that the overall length of the REIS-class Type 214TN air independent propulsion (AIP) submarines under construction for Turkish Naval Forces (TFN) has been increased by 0.75m over previously released information. The length now apparently stands at 68.35m, with the other key dimensions being height of 13.1m excluding periscope masts, beam 6.3m and draught 6.8metres.

Of the six submarines to be built, three are already in hand at the Golcuk Naval Shipyard: the first, PIRIREIS, was laid down in October 2015 and is expected to be launched this year; the third boat, MURATREIS, was laid down in February. The vessels are expected to be commissioned into the TNF in 2021-2026, and will be the first AIP submarines in Turkish service, replacing four AY-class (Type 209/1200) diesel-electric powered boats. The REIS will feature the ISUS-90/72 combat management system, Mk48 Mod 6AT and DM2A4 heavyweight torpedoes, HARPOON Block I/II and IDAS missiles. The indigenously-developed AKYA heavyweight torpedo and ATMACA Block I/II missile systems are likely to be integrated in coming years.

Originally the class was to be called CERBE, but in 2014 significant design modifications were made to meet TNF requirements and to cater for some technical problems with the HDW design. The former commander of TNF, Adm. Bülent Bostanoglu, is on record as stating that Turkish engineers found five major design flaws and developed solutions for them. The resulting submarine, longer and heavier than CERBE, was renamed the REIS-class. The latest revision in the overall length makes the current submarines 2.05m longer than the original CERBE design. MONCh understands that surface displacement is around 1,850t and submerged displacement likely to be 2,040-2,050.
