Hybride aandrijving en 199-serie met 1.100 kW van mtu-Solutions

Op Eurosatory 2024 presenteerde de divisie Rolls Royce Power Systems, die opereert onder de naam mtu-Solutions, concepten voor een hybride aandrijving voor militaire landvoertuigen en voor de 199-motorenserie met tien cilinders en 1.100 kW.

Als combinatie van een krachtige dieselmotor en batterij-elektrische aandrijving is het hybride krachtpakket voor militaire landvoertuigen bedoeld om tactische voertuigen in staat te stellen nieuwe mogelijkheden te benutten – bijvoorbeeld een stillere werking en een kleinere thermische voetafdruk, schrijft mtu-Solutions .



Met de nieuwe mtu-hybride aandrijving combineert het bedrijf de voordelen van een krachtige dieselmotor met die van een batterij-elektrische aandrijving. Volgens mtu vereist het sterk geïntegreerde aandrijfsysteem relatief weinig ruimte in het voertuig om zoveel mogelijk volume te bieden aan uitrusting en bemanning. De kern van de oplossing is een zeer mobiele en uiterst compacte aandrijfoplossing, rekening houdend met de toenemende kostendruk, krappe budgetten en de behoefte aan aanzienlijk grotere wagenparken.

"Toekomstige gepantserde militaire landvoertuigen zullen meer vermogen nodig hebben voor de voortstuwing en de stroomvoorziening aan boord van elektronische systemen. Tegelijkertijd zullen ze worden ontworpen voor gewijzigde tactische benaderingen in het veld. We houden met beide rekening bij onze toekomstige mtu-aandrijfoplossingen voor deze toepassing", zegt Knut Müller, Senior Vice President Global Governmental Business bij Rolls-Royce Power Systems.

Volgens mtu voeden de krachtige accu's die voorheen bij dieselbedrijf werden opgeladen de elektrische en elektronische systemen van het voertuig om een ��stille werking te garanderen, bijvoorbeeld in een verborgen positie. Dit gebeurt zonder het geluid en de thermische voetafdruk van de dieselmotor – en dat gedurende een lange periode. Dit maakt het voor vijandelijke verkenningen moeilijker om het voertuig te lokaliseren. De zogenaamde 'anti-ideling'-modus zorgt niet alleen voor een betere camouflage van het voertuig, maar verlaagt ook het brandstofverbruik aanzienlijk wanneer het voertuig in stand-by staat. Het bereik van de voertuigen en de stroomafwaartse logistieke keten voor het tanken van de voertuigen worden geoptimaliseerd.

mtu wijst erop dat de 'milde' hybridisatie met de gecombineerde aandrijving zijn voordelen laat zien bij langzaam rijden, waarbij de voertuigsporen slechts weinig geluid produceren. Met behulp van een speciaal ontwikkelde en individueel op maat gemaakte geluiddemper wordt het door de aandrijving gegenereerde geluid tot een minimum beperkt, waardoor het aanzienlijk moeilijker wordt om de voertuigen te detecteren. Bij gecombineerd gebruik dient de elektrische aandrijving ook als booster voor zeer dynamische acceleraties, geluidsarm langzaam rijden of zelfs rijden op hoge snelheid. "Op deze manier benutten we de voordelen van hybridisatie in alle bedrijfsmodi", benadrukt Müller.

"Dit aandrijfconcept zal de toepassingsmogelijkheden van toekomstige gepantserde rupsvoertuigen uitbreiden op een manier die voorheen moeilijk voorstelbaar was", zegt Christian Wolf, ontwikkelingsmanager voor militaire motoren en systemen bij Rolls-Royce Power Systems. "Wij zijn ervan overtuigd dat we een belangrijke bijdrage leveren aan de verdere ontwikkeling van het defensievermogen van de NAVO en haar bondgenoten. Hierdoor kunnen voertuigfabrikanten voor het eerst volledig nieuwe voertuigconcepten realiseren, waarbij het hybrideconcept in principe met elke motorserie uit het militaire aandrijfprogramma van MTU kan worden geïmplementeerd."



Serie 199 met 1.100 kW

Met de introductie van een nieuwe 10-cilindermotor wil mtu-Solutions het vermogensbereik van de veelgebruikte 199-serie uitbreiden naar 1.100 kW. Mtu zegt dat het sinds 2000 ongeveer 4.000 6- en 8-cilindermotoren heeft gehad, bijvoorbeeld voor het wielvoertuig 8×8 Boxer, de rupsvoertuigen gebaseerd op het ASCOD-platform, de Ajax-familievoertuigen en de volgende generatie Amerikaanse gevechtsvoertuigen. voertuigen zoals de M10 Booker en de Poolse gepantserde personeelscarrier Borsuk.

"In de volgende stap hebben we gepland om de prestaties verder te verhogen tot 1.200 kW", zegt ontwikkelingsmanager Christian Wolf. Dit maakt de voertuigintegratie in een powerpack aanzienlijk eenvoudiger.

"Met deze aandrijving, die is gebaseerd op een commerciële basismotor, helpen we op kosteneffectieve wijze te voldoen aan de toegenomen eisen voor nationale en alliantieverdediging", zegt Knut Müller.

Turret-onafhankelijk secundair wapensysteem
Naast het MUSS 2.0-beschermingssysteem werd voor het eerst het torenonafhankelijke secundaire wapensysteem, gemonteerd aan de rechterachterzijde van de gepantserde personeelscarrier, aan een groter publiek getoond. Volgens PSM is de TSWA momenteel bezig om klaar te zijn voor serieproductie. Blijkbaar is het wapen aangeboden als onderdeel van het tweede lot, maar de Bundeswehr heeft het nog niet in gebruik genomen.

Alle S1 Puma's en de VJTF Puma's zijn uitgerust om de TSWA te huisvesten, wat in wezen een onbemand wapenstation is in de vorm van een 40 mm granaatwerper, die bedoeld is om de eigen bescherming van het voertuig van dichtbij te garanderen. De TSWA kan dodelijke en niet-dodelijke granaten van 40 mm afvuren.

Het volledig gestabiliseerde wapen heeft zijn eigen 360 graden dag- en nachtzicht, inclusief een laserafstandsmeter. De gevechtsafstand bedraagt ��maximaal 400 meter. De cadans wordt gegeven als drie schoten per seconde.

De gevechtslading van de TSWA bestaat uit 18 dodelijke en 18 niet-dodelijke granaten, waarbij de dodelijke granaten munitie zijn in een buitenste, roterende trommel van de TSWA, terwijl de niet-dodelijke granaten (NLW) zijn ondergebracht in een vaste trommel in de centrum van de TSWA. Volgens PSM kan de NLW-module worden ingewisseld voor modules met andere functies. Zo kunnen rookgranaten, CS-granaten of flitsgranaten – ook in de vorm van gemengde wapens – als niet-dodelijke wapens worden ingezet.

Volgens PSM is de TSWA bereid om in de toekomst met middelhoge snelheid munitie van de 40 mm granaat (40 x 46 mm) te kunnen afvuren. Er is ook een upgrademogelijkheid om geharde 40 mm-munitie af te vuren.

De Italianen willen een nieuw rupsvoertuig aanschaffen, namen als KF41, CV90 gaan rond.
Met de afwijzing van Frankrijk en Duitsland in het Leopard 3 project, zou het zomaar kunnen ook om een tussenoplossing te hebben in de vervanging na de ARIETE MBT (net een MLU gehad) dat een combinatie van Rheinmetall KF41 met KF51 een goede kans maakt.

Italy tees up $5 billion-plus program to build 1,000 combat vehicles

Italy will pick industrial partners to start work on a major new €5 billion (U.S. $5.4 billion) tracked fighting vehicle program within "a few months," a senior Italian Army official has told Defense News.

Companies will be invited to launch feasibility studies for the program, which is expected to lead to a 1,000-vehicle purchase as Italy hurries to replace its aging Dardo vehicles, and as the war in Ukraine has put land combat back on the map.

Furthermore, with Italy determined to involve European firms, the program could prove a catalyst for industrial integration in the sector, as soon as Rome can decide who to pick from potential partners like Italy's Leonardo and Iveco, French-German firm KNDS, and Germany's Rheinmetall.

"From a programmatic point of view, all documents related to the operational requirement have been approved and the Ministry of Defence has allocated an important part of the necessary budget," said Maj. Gen. Francesco Olla, the head of the Army's General Planning Financial Division. "Therefore, the procurement activities will begin in the next few months."

Formerly called the Armored Infantry Combat System and now renamed the Army Armored Combat System, or A2CS, the program foresees a vehicle able to share targets with other platforms; use a wide range of ammunition, including airburst rounds; and tackle threats from improvised explosive devices, anti-tank missiles and swarming drones.

Possibly one of the most interesting and less talked about Italian defence products at #Eurosatory2024, for the first time IDV is showcasing the SUPERAV equipped with Leonardo's new HITFIST 30 UL turret. It uses Leonardo's X-GUN which can fire programmable air burst munitions.

BAE Systems eyes larger AMPV production line, new variants, foreign customers

As company leaders eye new AMPV variants and potential international customers, they want to boost the York facility's annual production capacity up towards 220 vehicles.

As BAE Systems ramps up Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle (AMPV) production to meet US Army demand, company leaders eyeing possible international sales say they're actually aiming to produce 220 vehicles per year at the York, Pa. facility.

AMPV program director Bill Sheehy and international business development director for Europe Paul Zukowski were at Eurosatory last week and spoke with a handful of reporters about the M113 armored personnel carrier replacement program, work with the US Army and possible new customers.

Around the March timeframe, BAE Systems kicked off a year-long production ramp up plan that would increase production from about one brigade set per year (approximately 130 vehicles) up to a brigade-and-a-half (in the neighborhood of 195-197 vehicles).

While work is underway to achieve those previously disclosed goals, Sheehy said the company is "looking well beyond" the Army's current demand and would ideally like to produce 220 AMPVs at the York facility each year. Doing so, he said, would enable the company to meet current contract obligations, as well as new ones from the US Army and international customers.

"I do anticipate either new vehicles coming down the pike, whether it's ... command [and] control, or counter [unmanned aerial systems] UAS or whatever you want to call it: I do anticipate the family growing," Sheehy told reporters. "But I also anticipate interest from the rest of the world to replace their M113."

The Army's current AMPV plan currently revolves around five vehicle configurations: general purpose, mission command, mortar carriers, medical evacuation and medical treatment. However, the service is eyeing additional configurations including using the platform as the crewed control vehicle for Robotic Combat Vehicles. According to Sheehy, BAE and the Army have now begun conversations creating such a variant.

The company has also been touting its universal top plate system as an avenue for rolling out new configurations like a prototype with the Kongsberg-Patria NEMO remote-controlled 120mm turreted mortar system.

"There are a number of things [coming out of Ukraine] that they're talking to us about," Sheehy said.

"One of the lessons learned is counter-battery threats to artillery or mortars, and [when] you are stationary when they fire, that turreted mortar capability allows the vehicle to fire while moving, which ... reduces counter-battery [threats]," he later added.

At the service behest, the company produced that turreted mortar prototype and soldiers have been testing it out this month at Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona before it heads to Ft. Moore in Georgia for a demonstration later this summer, according to Sheehy.

"They're paying for it, and they are evaluating that technology," he added, noting there are other turreted motors out there that could also be integrated onto the AMPV.

"Our job, again, is to be prepared whichever way they want to go," he added. In addition to producing that prototype, the company has created several others. Last week at the European arms show, it showcased an AMPV with a 30mm cannon configuration from Oshkosh Defense that is part of the Army's upgunned Stryker program, also dubbed the Medium Caliber Weapon System.

Looking beyond the US market, Zukowski said the company is having active conversations with Romania about AMPV options within their military, and as Poland acquires M1 Abrams main battle tanks, the AMPV mission command and medivac variants would be a "good fit" to support those tanks.

"While Poland [and] Romania are obviously front leaders in this piece of the discussion with us, anyone who owns M113s, I think, should be talking about AMPVs coming in and replacing those mission goals," Zukowski added.

Circling back to production capacity, though, the duo said the York facility could handle a few smaller orders from foreign militaries but if a larger order is placed or for multiple variants, setting up local production would be a viable option.

Eurosatory 2024: Sweden procures 50 CV9035 MkIIIC IFVs

The Swedish Army is procuring 50 CV9035 MkIIIC infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs), Janes has learnt at the Eurosatory defence exhibition being held in Paris from 17 to 21 June.

Sweden ordered the vehicles in May to replace Swedish Army CV9040s donated to Ukraine and to send more CV90s to Kyiv, in co-operation with Denmark, but at the time neither the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) nor BAE Systems Hägglunds communicated the number being procured or the value of the contract.

Sweden ordered the CV90 MkIIIC rather than the MkIV that Slovakia and the Czech Republic are procuring for speed of delivery, BAE Systems Hägglunds representatives told Janes. The CV90 MkIV would have to go through Swedish qualification, which could add at least a year to delivery times, one of the representatives said.

The CV90 MkIIIC and MkIV are similar, with the main difference being in the dampening of their suspension systems, according to the BAE Systems Hägglunds representatives.

BAE Systems and the FMV announced on 21 May that they had signed a contract for new CV9035 MkIIIC vehicles and associated integrated logistic support. There is also a contract option for more countries to order the CV90 MkIIIC.

In October 2023 the FMV signed a CV90 pre-design contract to prepare to quickly start production. The FMV said at the time that the contract would require an increase in the production capacity at BAE Systems Hägglund's factory in Örnsköldsvik.

Ik denk dat alles op dit voertuig plaatsen wat jij aangeeft heel lastig word. 

Maar Het ontwerp van Rheinmetall hier heeft 4 SPIKE ATGM's en een 7.62 mm Coax en deze kan tegen drones gebruikt worden. Mogelijk kan dit aangepast worden naar een 12,7 mm, een wapen wat er meer terug zien in C-UAS oplossingen.

En de 4 Spike's kunnen misschien vervangen worden door een loitering munition die dualrole ingezet kan worden (ATGM / loitering).

Hybride aandrijving moet geen probleem zijn om dat te ontwikkelen en die goede sensor mast zit er al in (volgens Rheinmetall).

Tegenpartij KNDS heeft in 2022 ook een panzerjager type ontwikkeld op basis van de Boxer. Grotendeels hetzelfde concept, alleen een wat hogere RCWS maar wel met 4 raketten & een 12,7 mm HMG.

Eurosatory 2024: New Rheinmetall's Panzerjaeger concept integrates AI for long-range anti-tank defense.

At Eurosatory 2024, Rheinmetall introduced its Panzerjaeger, an anti-tank vehicle concept designed for long-range anti-tank defense and enhanced situational awareness. This system aligns with Rheinmetall's Digital Brigade approach, which integrates soldiers, sensors, platforms, and effectors with new technologies such as artificial intelligence, autonomy, and robotics to increase combat effectiveness.



The Panzerjaeger system is vehicle-independent, meaning it can be integrated across various platforms, including 4x4, 6x6, 8x8, and tracked vehicles, improving cost efficiency. At the Eurosatory 2024 exhibition, Rheinmetall showcased the system on a 4x4 vehicle, which offers high maneuverability, adequate protection, and an ergonomic design for crew endurance. The system's components, including sensors, equipment, and armament, are customizable to meet the user's requirements.

Key features of the Panzerjaeger include the EOS500 electro-optical sensor system mounted on a telescopic mast, providing a direct visual view with a target detection range of over eleven kilometers. The system also includes three fully integrated Rheinmetall "Recce S" UAVs, each with a reconnaissance range of eight kilometers, and an onboard charging station.

The Panzerjaeger's primary armament includes two launchers, each holding four ready-to-fire Spike LR2 anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs), with an additional four missiles stored for reloading. This 5th generation missile system supports various engagement capabilities, including non-line-of-sight (NLOS) firing up to 5.5 kilometers. Additionally, the Panzerjaeger is equipped with a Natter remotely controlled weapon station (RCWS) armed with a 7.62mm x 51 machine gun. The open architecture allows for customization, including the integration of alternative anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs) or optional loitering munitions from the Hero family.

According to Rheinmetall, a typical 4x4 platform configuration may feature three Rheinmetall "Recce S" UAVs for reconnaissance, an EOS500 electro-optical sensor on a telescopic mast for target detection up to 11.4 kilometers, two SPIKE LR2 launching platforms for NLOS firing, a Natter remote-controlled weapon station with a 7.62x51mm machine gun, an Acoustic Platform for Vehicles (APV) that detects launch signatures acoustically and calculates the threat's position, and a ROSY smoke grenade launcher system for multispectral cover.



The Panzerjaeger aims for cost efficiency by using commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components, making it a market-ready solution with flexible configuration options according to customer needs. Its integration into the battlefield network is facilitated by digital, software-defined radios and the Tactical Core middleware from Blackned GmbH, enabling efficient communication and data exchange within the networked information space.

Rheinmetall's TacNet battle management system, developed for tactical-level operations, offers mission preparation, interface planning, and automated command and control processes. TacNet is compatible with the Tactical Core middleware from Rheinmetall's partner Blackned, facilitating the integration of soldier systems, unmanned systems, and vehicles. This integration enables a unified information space, reducing the sensor-to-shooter chain time.

The Panzerjaeger is integrated into the system network via digital, software-defined radios and the Tactical Core middleware. It also utilizes new battle management and training applications of the Digital Brigade, including apps for position selection and crew training.

In offensive operations, the Panzerjaeger can follow attacking units or remain on the flank, using its situational awareness and long-range capabilities to engage enemy targets, monitor friendly units, provide fire support, and secure the flanks. In defensive scenarios, it supports combat troops from rear firing positions, monitors forward terrain, provides fire support, prevents enemy breakthroughs, and conducts surveillance of flanks or important areas of interest.

FMV bestelt nieuwe gevechtsvoertuigen 90

FMV heeft een contract getekend met BAE Systems Hägglunds met betrekking tot de bestelling van nieuwe gevechtsvoertuigen 90. De overeenkomst omvat een deel van de verwerving van compensatie aan de Zweedse strijdkrachten voor de gevechtsvoertuigen die Zweden aan Oekraïne heeft gedoneerd en een deel van een bestelling van gevechtsvoertuigen rechtstreeks aan de Oekraïense strijdkrachten. - Van FMV-kant hebben we heel intensief gewerkt om dit contract in relatief korte tijd tot stand te brengen. Het is belangrijk om de capaciteiten van de strijdkrachten te herwinnen en voor de lange termijn steun aan Oekraïne, zegt Jonas Lotsne, hoofd van het operationele gebied Army Materiel van FMV.

In januari 2023 besloot de Zweedse regering gevechtsvoertuigen 90 aan Oekraïne te schenken. Sindsdien zijn er voorbereidingen gaande om nieuwe gevechtsvoertuigen te bestellen. Als onderdeel van de militaire steun aan Oekraïne heeft Zweden ook ongeveer 1,3 miljard SEK gereserveerd voor de aankoop van gevechtsvoertuigen die rechtstreeks aan Oekraïne zullen worden gedoneerd. Denemarken heeft op zijn beurt het equivalent van ongeveer 2,8 miljard SEK gereserveerd voor de aanschaf van nieuwe gevechtsvoertuigen rechtstreeks voor Oekraïne. Dit geld zal nu worden opgenomen in de gecombineerde bestelling van Stridsfordon 90.

- Er is grote internationale belangstelling voor Combat Vehicle 90 en dit project is zowel qua aantal landen als qua voertuigen gegroeid. Met een grotere gecombineerde order kan Hägglunds de productie nu verder opschalen en het leveringspercentage verhogen, wat positief is voor alle betrokkenen, besluit Jonas Lotsne. 

De planning is in volle gang
In oktober vorig jaar tekende FMV een eerste contract voor het pre-ontwerp van gevechtsvoertuigen met BAE Systems Hägglunds. Er zijn dus voorbereidingen getroffen om snel met de productie te kunnen starten. Het contract van vandaag betekent ook dat de productiecapaciteit in de fabriek van Hägglund in Örnsköldsvik zal toenemen.

De versie die momenteel wordt besteld is de CV9035 MkIIIC met een 35 millimeter Bushmaster autocannon. Het verschilt van de huidige CV90 van de strijdkrachten, die een automatisch kanon van 40 mm van Bofors heeft. Door een moderne versie van Stridsfordon 90 te bestellen die geen verdere ontwikkeling behoeft en met minimale nationale aanpassingen kunnen de levertijden worden verkort.

Het aantal gevechtsvoertuigen dat bij de bestelling is inbegrepen, evenals de bestelwaarde, worden niet meegedeeld.
