Krauss-Maffei Wegmann has confirmed to the Eurosatory Daily that the ARTEC Boxer Multi-Role Armoured Vehicle (MRAV) has recently been fitted with its 155mm Artillery Gun Module (AGM), with initial firing trials scheduled to take place at the Meppen firing range later this year.

The AGM is a remote-controlled turret armed with the 155mm/ 52 calibre ordnance that is fitted to the combat-proven Krauss- Maffei Wegmann PzH 2000 tracked self-propelled artillery system deployed by Germany, Greece, Italy and the Netherlands and on order for Qatar.

The AGM is provided with 30 155mm projectiles and 145 modular charges, with six modules used for maximum range. The latter depends on the type of projectile, but a range of more than 40km can be achieved firing an unassisted projectile.

The projectiles and associated charges are loaded automatically, and the weapon is aimed and fired by remote control from the safety of the cab. A rate of fire of up to eight rounds a minute can be achieved. Time into and out of action is currently being quoted as just 30 seconds, meaning that the system cannot be engaged by counter-battery fire.

The AGM was originally successfully tested on a surplus Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) tracked chassis. This was followed by the Donar, which is the AGM integrated onto a new tracked hull developed by General Dynamics European Land Systems Santa Barbara Sistemas. The AGM could potentially also be integrated on other wheeled chassis or used in the static role for forward operating base defence.

Boxer is in production for Germany and the Netherlands. Eurosatory Daily sources have indicated that a number of export customers are interested in the Boxer for a wider range of missions, which could include the AGM version.

This artillery system is armed with a FH70 155-mm/L39 howitzer

This prototype self-propelled howitzer can use all standard NATO 155-mm projectiles. It is also compatible with newly-developed OTO Melara Volcano both guided and unguided long-range projectiles, which have a maximum range of up to 60 km.

The Centauro is a high mobility 8x8 wheeled armored combat vehicle family designed to perform a variety of missions. It was developed by Iveco Defense Vehicles, Consorzio IVECO Fiat-OTO Melara and OTO Melara for the Italian Army in the late 1980s. The first variant, the Centauro cavalry fighting vehicle, entered service in 1991. The second variant of Centauro introduced in 2009, known as Centauro 8x8 VBC or Centauro VBM, features add-on armor for increased protection, larger troops compartment and a turret-mounted 25mm cannon to serve as an infantry fighting vehicle (IFV). Other versions have been developed for air defense, field artillery and recovery and repair of damaged Centauros on the battlefield.

The Centauro 155/39 LW is a self-propelled howitzer (SPH) featuring high mobility thanks to its 8x8 chassis, rapid deployability, elevated agility and high survivability. The wheeled chassis also provides lower operating and maintenance costs compared with tracked chassis self-propelled howitzers. Its primary armament is a lightweight 155mm 39-caliber cannon equipped with an automatic loading system for both projectiles and propelling charges. The cannon can fire both all NATO standard ammunition and VULCANO guided ammunition. The Centauro SPH requires less than 3 minutes to be deployed and be ready to fire and one minute to leave the scene after the intervention. This weapon system is fully digitized with Network Centric Warfare (NCW) capabilities and is well suited for operations within asymmetric warfare. For self-defense purposes, it can be fitted with a roof-mounted remote weapon station. IVECO Defense Vehicles unveiled the Centauro 155/39 LW weapon system during the Eurosatory 2012 exhibition in Paris, France.

Rheinmetall surprises IDEX 2015 with a High Energy Laser mounted on a GTK Boxer platform

The Boxer family concept is based on a uniform drive module and interchangeable, user/role-specific mission modules. Designed for maximum versatility, these build-on modules lend themselves to the development of a wide variety of mission-specific variants. At IDEX 2015, a Boxer vehicle equipped with a high energy laser (HEL) effector module is on display at the Rheinmetall stand, exemplifying the extraordinary versatility of this state-of-the-art fighting vehicle.

The GTK Boxer with a High Energy Laser at IDEX 2015

The 20 kW-class Mobile HEL Effector Wheel XX mounted on the GTK Boxer features a special HEL effector module that takes full advantage of the vehicle's unique modularity and Rheinmetall's proprietary HEL effector know-how, which is based on beam superimposing technology. Moreover, this technology makes it possible to combine several GTK Boxer HEL vehicles, creating a system of systems with an effective power level of over 100 kW.

The HEL Boxer represents the leading edge of a Mobile Highe Engergy Laser Weapon. Integrating a Laser Weapon Module including power supply and cooling into the Boxer vehicle, with its inherent high level of protection and the unique mobility.

The HEL Boxer is able to neutralize modern air and asymmetric threats with its outstanding flexibility from defeating optronics on air crafts, downing Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), neutralizing ammunition of weapon systems without detroying them and disposing of unexplodes ordnance and clearing battlefield obstacles.

The HEL boxer has a lot of advantages: its mobility, its low cost per engagement, is ability to engage optronic systems, UAS, ammunition and weapon systems, unexplodes ordnances...

KMW presents the GTK Boxer variant with a LANCE RC turret at IDEX 2015

Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) is exhibiting the newest generation of its vehicle systems at IDEX 2015: the GTK Boxer as a wheeled armoured personnel carrier variant with a Puma turret for the first time. Integrating the world's most advanced infantry fighting vehicle's turret into the Boxer's 8x8 chassis unites the state of the art technologies of both of these systems, which have already been qualified and introduced into the German Armed Forces.

The unmanned turret with its sighting system and 30mm automatic cannon alongside the extremely high mobility of the Boxer chassis make this Boxer one of the most powerful wheeled armoured personnel carriers in the world. The high level of protection against heavy blast mines and machine guns is also the basis of this vehicle variant's excellent survivability and sustainment capabilities when deployed.

The turret installed on the Boxer is the Rheinmetall Defence Lance RC, the remote control version of the Lance turret equipping Puma IFV. Lance is a medium-calibre turret system on the cutting edge of modern military technology. Owing to its compact dimensions and low weight, it can be mounted on a variety of different platforms, including relatively lightweight wheeled vehicles. Moreover, the modular turret concept offers scope for growth throughout the product's entire lifecycle. Even today, the basic version's capabilities can be expanded in a number of ways: with a situational awareness system, for example, or an independent weapon station or additional commander's sight for providing hunter-killer functionality. Importantly, the LANCE RC's crew can reload without leaving the safety of the armoured fighting compartment. This feature is a direct response to experience gained during current deployed operations, as is the ability to fire the weapon in superelevation mode (60°).

The main weapon is the MK30-2 / ABM automatic cannon, developed and built by Rheinmetall. The use of this cannon brings a host of advantages for the vehicle crew. The turret has a reserve of 200 rounds of two different ammunition types for the main weapon. This means that the weapon can be resupplied with ammunition without the soldiers having to leave the protected vehicle interior. The turret also enables moving targets to be engaged accurately and effectively even when the vehicle itself is moving. Naturally, other weapons of various calibers or from other suppliers can also be integrated in the LANCE turret. Full flexibility is ensured in this respect as well.
The Boxer's modular design concept allows for a variety of missionspecific vehicle variants. Numerous modules such as the ambulance, training or command post variants have already been introduced to the German and Dutch Armed Forces. The recently presented artillery variant emphasises the unique capability spectrum of this system.
