Saab Signs Contracts for A26 Submarines and Mid-Life Upgrade for Gotland-Class Submarines 

Defence and security company Saab has signed contracts with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) for the construction of two new Type A26 submarines and a mid-life upgrade for two Gotland-class submarines. The orders, signed with FMV today, cover the period 2015-2024 and the total order value is SEK8.6 billion (Now worth approx. $1.04 billion—Ed.)

Saab will construct, verify and deliver two new Type A26 submarines for the Swedish Navy to a total order value of SEK7.6 billion. Deliveries will start in 2022 and be finalized in 2024.

Saab will also conduct a mid-life upgrade on two of Sweden's existing Gotland-class submarines, including an overhaul and upgrade of the combat system. The total value of this work is SEK2.1 billion. The two upgraded Gotland-class submarines will be delivered to FMV in late 2018 and late 2019, respectively.

Saab has already received orders in 2014 and 2015 for the procurement of subsystems related to these contracts. These existing orders have a total value of SEK1.1 billion. Hence, the total order value related to today's orders amounts toSEK8.6 billion.

The orders are a part of the 9 June 2014 Letter of Intent regarding Swedish armed forces' underwater capabilities.

It is a privilege to lead this development," says Gunilla Fransson, head of Saab business area Security and Defence Solutions.

The Type A26 submarine for the Swedish Navy is the world's most modern submarine programme. The submarines will be powered by conventional diesel-electric propulsion machinery and equipped with the Kockums Stirling AIP (air-independent propulsion) system. The Stirling system will make the Type A26 very stealthy and difficult to detect.

The mid-life upgrade of the two Gotland-class submarines includes improvements necessary to meet future operational requirements. The order also comprises procurement of material, platform modifications, system upgrades and testing.

Het NL genoemde (calculatie) budget is 2.5 mjd voor 4 boten.... vorig jaar is een getal genoemd van 3.85 mjd.... nu is al duidelijk dat 2.5 onvoldoende is voor 4 boten.

Een afgerond gemiddelde van beide getallen ligt meer voor de hand: 3.2 mjd voor 4 boten is 800 mjn per boot.

Nu is die 800 mjn per boot wat mij betreft minder spannend omdat een aanzienlijk deel van dit bedrag in NL zal worden uitgeven wat ook weer betekend dat er veel naar de belastingbetaler zal terug vloeien.

Earlier this year the government announced that Sweden is to invest SEK 8.2 million to buy two new submarines, but the constructor Saab Kockums now claims that the amount may not be enough, daily Svenska Dagbladet reports.

Saab Kockums is currently negotiating the details of the upcoming order with the Defence Materiel Administration, FMV, and the government is waiting for the negotiations to finish before officially placing the order.

Svenska Dagbladet writes that if the two A26 submarines end up costing more than the 8.2 million that the Swedish government has set aside, the government may need to either lower its ambitions for the new subs or postpone other investments to be able to finance them.

The Defence Materiel Administration expects to reach a deal with Saab Kockums within seven days, but Sebastian Carlsson, press spokesperson at Saab, is less optimistic and tells SvD that they expect the order to be placed later this year.

er zouden er 6 nodig zijn
maar er komen er waarschijnlijk niet meer als 4
eer dat ze aan een vervolgorder denken moet er eerst minimaal 3 miljard bij op het budget van defensie
de KLU,KL en KMAR willen ook een graantje meepikken en met de 250 miljoen die ze voor dit jaar minder willen bezuinigen blijft er voor de KM niet veel over laat staan dat de onderzeedienst er veel van merkt
en met de trent van nu (vorig jaar 100 dit jaar mischien 250 miljoen minder bezuinigen) zijn we in 2018 mischien zo ver dat we NIET meer bezuinigen
en dan kunnen we daarna  pas gaan opbouwen
dus als je er 3 miljard extra budget bij wil moet je met dit tempo wachten tot 2030
dus misschien in 2030 een vervolg order(als de linkse politieke partijen die dan misschien weer aan de macht zijn niet weer eens een streep door het plan halen )

Dat was natuurlijk de sterkte ven enige tijd geleden.... een order van 6 of 4-2 zou mooi zijn.... al zullen de muntjes eerst nog gevonden moeten worden.

Dat zijn wijze woorden! Dat budget moet omhoog want anders is er tot 2018 en later niet één kiel gelegd van welk ander schip dan ook.
