USS Bonhomme Richard fire: Sailors injured, crews battle blaze at Naval Base San Diego
Several sailors injured in ship fire at NBSD
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Fire-Rescue is responding, along with multiple agencies to a military ship fire at Naval Base San Diego.
SDFD is assisting on this fire on board the USS Bonhomme Richard. According to a tweet from SDFD, they are partnered with Federal Fire in unified command.
ABC News reports that 11 sailors were taken to the hospital with minor injuries following an explosion aboard the ship. All SDFD personnel are accounted for as of 11:19, the department said.
San Diego Fire-Rescue tweeted around 10:30 a.m. about the fire aboard the ship on the 3400 block of Senn Street.
It's unclear how the fire started. According to a witness, an explosion was heard coming from the ship shortly after the blaze started.
ABC 10News crews at the scene are reporting a toxic smell emanating from the blaze.

Volgens mij heeft het onderhoud er voor gezorgd dat de "battle damage" voorzieningen nu niet of minder goed zijn werk doen. ben benieuwd wat de "lessons learned" van deze brand zullen zijn.

Ik heb mijn VCA 1 certificaat sinds 1997 en toen ik de cursus voor het eerst deed vertelde de docent tijdens de lessen dat hij had gehoord van de directeur van Shell Moerdijk zolang alles normaal draait maakt ik me geen zorgen maar als er onderhoud is op een van de fabrieken dan maak ik me wel zorgen want dan gaan de beveiligings kleppen eraf en de kans dat er iets kan gebeuren is dan reëel. Ik weet niet hoe dit in de scheepsvaart is als een schip in onderhoud is?

Automatische systemen zoals CO2, FM200, Novec, sprinkler/watermist e.d. zijn meestal één van de eerste systemen die worden afgekoppeld. Vaak zijn de brandbluspompen ook niet operationeel, afhankelijk van hoe ver het onderhoud gaat en wat er onderhouden wordt. En of het schip nog in het water ligt of droog staat.
Daarom wordt het interne blussysteem van schepen tijdens onderhoud meestal gekoppeld aan een externe watertoevoer, zodat de interne blusmiddelen wel gebruikt kunnen worden.

Er zullen vast een aantal branddeuren open hebben gestaan die normaliter dicht hadden moeten zitten...

Het vervelende is dat ze net een verbouwing heeft gehad om met de F35B te kunnen opereren. Gezien de Amerikaanse USMC plannen (kleinere maar meer), vrees ik dat ze afgeschreven is en ook niet wordt vervangen door een vergelijkbaar schip.

Men heeft nog 2 Tarawa class schepen in reserve, daar zal men eerder gebruik van maken.
