Spain to trial Piranha 5 8x8 AIFV

The Piranha 5 from General Dynamics (GD) has taken a step nearer to becoming the future 8x8 armoured infantry fighting vehicle (AIFV) for the Spanish Army, with the Ministry of Defence (MoD) signing an agreement for it to be put through extensive technological trials.

While a definitive purchase is still to be agreed, industry sources have told IHS Jane's that preparing the vehicle for a test package makes the Piranha "now almost certain" to be the final choice.

It is understood that five vehicles will be used for tests as part of a programme that will run through 2017. The following year the MoD is expected to give its final decision on a planned acquisition of between 300 and 400 vehicles. Besides GD, the project also involves SAPA, for the motors, and Indra for the command and control and missions systems.

Neither the company nor the ministry has commented yet on the technological trial contract, but the source says it was signed on 4 December.

Earlier this year the Spanish government allotted EUR89 million (USD97 million) for the 8x8 development programme for what it calls the Vehículo de Combate sobre Ruedas (VCR): a project that is being financed by the Ministry of Industry.

Once a purchase is agreed, initial orders are expected to focus on troop carriers and scouting and command versions before following up with more specialist versions in later orders.

The initial acquisition is likely to be worth between EUR1.1 billion and EUR1.5 billion.

The new 8x8 is due to replace the ageing and under-armoured BMR (Blindado Medio de Ruedas), which has been in service for more than 30 years.

Spain selects Piranha 5 as new 8x8

David Ing, Madrid - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly | 24 September 2015

Spain's Ministry of Defence (MoD) has chosen the General Dynamics' Piranha 5 as the base platform for its new 8x8 wheeled infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) prototype, industry sources have told IHS Jane's .

While no decision has yet been openly announced by the MoD, the Spanish Army is looking to acquire at least 300 of the vehicles in an initial order expected to be worth about EUR1.5 billion (USD1.7 billion).

The Piranha 5 model, which is also being acquired by Denmark, was one of five solutions presented to the MoD earlier this year following a request for information (RfI), three of which were then assessed further.

The apparent decision to push ahead with the Piranha comes after the government earlier this year allotted EUR89 million for the Vehículo de Combate sobre Ruedas (VCR) project, which will be financed by the Ministry of Industry between 2015 and 2017.

The new 8x8 will replace the ageing BMR (Blindado Medio sobre Ruedas) which had to be replaced with stopgap orders for BAE Systems Nyala RG-31 and the Iveco LMV to provide troops with added protection against improvised explosive devices while serving in Afghanistan.

While no details have been released by the MoD, the initial order of the new vehicles is expected to concentrate on troop carriers and scouting and command versions, leaving more specialist versions to later contracts.

The VCR programme is also expected to include Indra and SAPA as key equipment suppliers for a project on which the government has said it wants to keep production in country.

....

;) that's for sure...

Duitsland aangekocht?
