A Chinook CH-47F aircraft from the 5th Aviation Regiment in Townsville landing on HMAS Canberra while the ship is alongside in her home port of Sydney.

Amphibious ship, HMAS Canberra has conducted deck and handling trials with two Chinook helicopters alongside in Sydney recently.

The aircraft, from the 5th Aviation Regiment, based in Townsville will go on to conduct first of class flight trials with Canberra's sister ship, HMAS Adelaide.

Canberra's Aviation Operations Officer, Major Paul Lewis, said the two aircraft were on ship for approximately a week.

"The trial was conducted by the Royal Australian Navy's Aircraft Maintenance and Flight Trials Unit," Major Lewis said.

"Before the aircraft can operate on the ship we first need to put them on the flight deck and move them around in various configurations to ensure the aircraft will fit safely and that the deck markings and procedures are correct before we begin flying the aircraft."

The data collected from the initial trial will assist with trials in Adelaide later this year.

Medium Lift Helicopter Cell Commander, Major Trevor Campbell, from Army's Aviation Test and Evaluation Section has been seconded to Navy's trials unit for the duration. He said the trial had been a success so far.

"The CH-47F has been in service in the Australian Army for just over a year and only recently achieved Initial Operating Capability and the F model will shortly be ready to take over from the CH-47D," Major Campbell said.

"As part of the deck trial we simulated landing in rough weather where the aircraft may land off from its designated landing spot.

"This is to make sure the rotor blades stay clear of any structures on the ship."

Major Campbell said that useful data gathered and great working relationships were formed.

"We collected a lot of raw data about what the aircraft was doing but from the personnel side we had a lot of integration and interface between the Army personnel from 5th Aviation Regiment and the ship's company of Canberra," he said.

"This helps to make sure all those key people like Aircraft Life-Support Fitters and Forward Army Refuelling personnel know how they can integrate with the ship and fit in with the work flow."

Canberra will sail shortly to take part in Exercise RIM OF THE PACIFIC in Hawaii, which will be the ship's first international exercise.

Idd.

Key Points
• The Royal Australian Navy will deploy HMAS Canberra on its first international exercise to Hawaii in mid-2016
• Deployment seeks to improve ship's interoperability with aircraft and naval platforms from partner countries

The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) will debut its first-of-class amphibious assault ship HMAS Canberra (L 02) at the Rim of the Pacific ('RIMPAC') international naval exercise in mid-2016 in a bid to improve the platform's interoperability with other navies, the service told IHS Jane's on 4 April.

'RIMPAC' 2016 is a biennial series of naval drills hosted by the US Pacific Fleet in and around the Hawaiian Islands and is usually conducted in the late June to early August time period. The event, which has grown to be the world's largest international maritime exercise, will see its 25th iteration in 2016.

Captain Christopher Smith, commanding officer of Canberra , told IHS Jane's during an interview that 'RIMPAC' 2016 will be the ship's first participation in an overseas international naval exercise and will demonstrate the platform's ability to interoperate with foreign armed forces elements, including aircraft operated by the US Navy (USN).

"The focus for Canberra 's visit over there at RIMPAC is to get interoperability with some of our allied navies," said Capt Smith, who added that among the aircraft that the RAN intends to integrate on board the amphibious ship include the USN's MV-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft and the CH-53 Sea Stallion helicopter. "We will [also] be embarking a range of nations on board from a land force perspective for the actual exercise," he said.

Canberra will be accompanied by two ANZAC (Meko 200)-class guided-missile frigates, HMAS Warramunga (152) and HMAS Ballarat (155) at 'RIMPAC' 2016.

Dan komt o.a.

Juist een must.

Chinooks commence Canberra trials

Royal Australian Navy | 25 October 2015

A CH-47D Chinook conducts load lifting trials with HMAS Canberra in Jervis Bay.

The Navy's Aircraft Maintenance and Flight Trials Unit along with C Squadron, 5 Aviation Regiment has conducted a 'quick look' trial of the CH-47D Chinook onboard the Navy's Flag Ship, HMAS Canberra. The trials were conducted over a week with preliminary work being conducted at HMAS Albatross and the flying trials conducted at sea on 20-21 October 2015.

The Chinook helicopter conducted a series of evolutions to HMAS Canberra's flight deck including launch and recoveries along with an assessment of external load operations known as vertical replenishment or VERTREP. An assessment was also made of aircraft lashing schemes and refuelling procedures.

This trial was the precursor for a full First of Class Flight Trial planned for the CH-47F in late 2016. The CH-47D and CH-47F are both operated by C Squadron from Townsville in Queensland.

Commander Air HMAS Canberra, Commander Paul Moggach, said the trial represented another milestone in operational capability for the ship.

A CH-47D Chinook on the deck of HMAS Canberra during First of Class Flight Trials in Jervis Bay.

"We are already authorised for deck operations with MRH-90 Taipan and S-70B-2 Seahawk helicopters, and the Chinook activity this week has further expanded our knowledge," he said.

"We look forward to operating with Army helicopters in support of our amphibious roles."

The outcome of the trial is to provide a limited CH-47D operating envelope to the Landing Helicopter Dock or amphibious assault ship.
