Danish Frigate Cuts Red Sea Mission Short After Technical Issues

The Danish contribution to Operation Prosperity Guardian in the Red Sea has been cut short by approximately two weeks, following issues with the air defences aboard the frigate HDMS Iver Huitfeldt during an engagement of a group of 15 Houthi drones on March 9.

Defence news site OLFI was first to report on the issues, which included the frigate being unable to use its ESSM air defence missiles during half an hour, as well as "up to half" of the rounds fired from the twin 76 mm guns detonating too early and close to the ship. Despite these issues, the frigate managed to down four of the incoming drones, with the rest being handled by other vessels. Following a 30 minute reboot of the air defence system, the ESSM was back on line and three missiles as well as 50-100 rounds of 76 mm ammunition was eventually used to bring down the four drones during the engagement which in total lasted about an hour.

The Danish Ministry of Defence has stated, on April 3, that General Flemming Lentfer – ironically with a background in the air defences and the Danish HAWK-batteries – has been relieved from his position as Chief of Defence, effective immediately. Major-general Michael Hyldgaard is taking over as acting ChoD, he in turn comes from a position as head of the Danish special forces.

A significant part of the fallout of what quickly is shaping up to be a moderate scandal in Danish politics is the role of the political leadership. Following the engagement, the commanding officer of HDMS Iver Huitfeldt commander (s.g) Sune Lund sent a message on March 13 describing issues with sensors, combat management system, and the 76 mm rounds, and noting that the significant increase in consumption of rounds would "seriously" reduce the combat capability and resilience of the frigate. Following this, the Danish Defence Command and Navy reportedly took immediate action, but Minister of Defence Troels Lund Poulsen told Danish public broadcaster DR that he knew about the issue only after OLFI reported it. A classified document seen by Danish TV 2 does however paint a markedly different story, and states that the MoD was informed as part of a meeting held on March 15, during which it was decided to hold a more detailed briefing on the issue three days later.

Sources to TV 2 state the defence forces now believe the number of rounds failing was significantly smaller than first feared, though on the other hand the issues with the radar and combat management system which have been known about earlier were reportedly more significant than anticipated. A notable detail is that the vessel is equipped with the Thales APAR radar, which also was the primary sensor for the German Sachsen-class frigate Hessen which had issues with its air defence weaponry back in February. Thales have issued a short statement following the Danish reports, saying that preliminary investigation by the Danish authorities "does not indicate a problem with the APAR radar." Another notable report is that spares and equipment – including both 76 mm guns – were borrowed from other Danish vessels before the frigate was sent to the Red Sea. While the HDMS Iver Huitfeldt reportedly passed all tests without issue following the installation of these, it has raised questions about possible problems with the integration of newly installed weapons

The Australian government on February 20 released a long awaited response outlining intentions for modernisation and expansion of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) surface fleet. The announcement itself followed the original Defence Strategic Review (DSR) published in May 2023. The earlier DSR abstained to make recommendations resolving challenges for the Australian Navy. Instead the review left this decision at the discretion of government based on the results of an Independent Analysis of the RAN. Canberra received the report for this Independent Analysis on September 29, 2023.

SPY-7 Radar For Japan's ASEV Achieves Milestone

On March 28, the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) successfully demonstrated the first track of a live space object by the AN/SPY-7(V)1 solid state radar integrated with the Aegis Weapon System (AWS).

MDA press release

This milestone event for the Japanese Aegis System Equipped Vessel (ASEV) program was also observed by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) and U.S. Navy Aegis Technical Representative.

During the tracking event, which was performed at Lockheed Martin's Production Test Center in Moorestown, New Jersey, the SPY-7 radar tactical hardware and software detected and tracked objects in space, and then passed data to the AWS for further processing.

MDA Director Lieutenant General Heath Collins said, "With the successful tracking of a space object by the SPY-7 radar, MDA has proved that The Aegis Weapon System with SPY-7 is ready to enter into an integrated testing phase with the ultimate objective to provide increased capability for Japan to defend against regional missile threats."

The SPY-7 radar with the AWS will be installed and fielded on two newly-constructed JMSDF vessels, for which Japan Ministry of Defense is targeting March 2028 and March 2029 for commissioning.

The SPY-7(V)1 radar uses scaled equipment and software derived from the MDA's advanced Long Range Discriminating Radar (LRDR) located in Clear, Alaska.

Patria NEMO Navy
https://www.patriagroup.com/products-and-services/protected-mobility-and-defence-systems/armament/patria-nemo-navy

The Patria NEMO Navy mortar system ordered by Sweden is an important international reference for Patria. This mortar system boosts accurate fire-on-the-move capabilities. It has attracted interest from others, too.
Sweden is bolstering its maritime defence capability with eight new mortar vessels that will be equipped with the Patria NEMO Navy mortar system.  The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration FMV (Försvarets materielverk) has ordered these vessels from Swede Ship Marine AB, for which Patria serves as a subcontractor.

Mats Hamrin, Key Account Manager Nordics at Patria, says that two Swedish shipyards reached the final stretch of the tendering process. FMV chose the package offered by Swede Ship Marine, which included the Patria NEMO Navy mortar system.

CitaatThis is a good example of Swedish-Finnish cooperation in the defence sector

"Together we'll build an optimal solution for the Swedish Armed Forces. This is a good example of Swedish-Finnish cooperation in the defence sector," says Hamrin.

An effective solution for fast-moving forces
Patria NEMO Navy is a lightweight and compact 120 mm turreted mortar system that is ideal for applications in fast-moving fleets. The same product family also includes Patria NEMO for vehicle integration and the Patria NEMO Container solution.

The Swedish Armed Forces were already familiar with Patria's mortar system — in 2018, Patria NEMO Container passed test firings conducted in challenging marine conditions in Sweden. In these tests, the container solution was integrated into a Fast Supply Vessel.

In addition to eight mortar vessels, FMV's order includes two Patria NEMO Container systems. The container operates as a fully standalone mortar unit, as it includes all the necessary features: the weapon, ammunition and crew protection.

It's also accurate on the move.

The mortar vessels will be used by amphibious troops stationed in Stockholm and Gothenburg. These troops operate on coasts, archipelagos and estuaries — their task is to repel enemy landings and, if necessary, to also carry out landings of their own.

To this end, the Swedish Armed Forces developed the Amfbat 2030 concept for its combat forces to enhance their mobility, speed and firepower.

CitaatThe Patria NEMO system provides troops with indirect mortar fire capabilities from a moving vessel

The acquisition of mortar vessels supports the practical implementation of this concept.

"The NEMO system provides troops with indirect mortar fire capabilities from a moving vessel. The mortar systems of other manufacturers don't include such features," says Hamrin.

An excellent reference in international markets
Patria's partner Swede Ship Marine has experience in ship-building that goes back to the 1890s. The company has supplied ships to the Swedish Armed Forces and Coast Guard since the 1930s.

"Swede Ship Marine invited us to participate in discussions with FMV at a very early stage. Since then, we've worked closely together. We're like one team," says Hamrin.

Swede Ship Marine and Patria will deliver the first fully equipped vessel to FMV in early 2027 and the last at the end of 2028.

"We can deliver the vessels on a fairly rapid schedule.  Nowadays, customers value fast delivery times."

Hamrin says that this order from Sweden bolsters the position of Patria's NEMO mortar system in the international market — and increases interest worldwide.

"The Swedish Armed Forces are known to set very high demands on their procurements. They want only the best quality.  This order will serve as an important international reference for us," says Hamrin.

State-of-the-art technology based on in-house product development
Patria NEMO's state-of-the-art weapons technology is built on the company's 80 years-plus experience of 120 mm mortar systems. Fire-on-the-move capabilities significantly speed up fire mission preparation, weapon alignment and opening fire.

To this end, the turret must have an effective stabilisation system.

Accurate fire also requires an advanced ballistic calculation system to determine continually changing fire values. The turret control system is based on Patria's state-of-the-art in-house software expertise.

Patria NEMO is also suitable for multiple round simultaneous impact (MRSI) firing. MRSI involves firing several mortal shells right after each other — they hit the target at the same time. In addition to indirect fire, the system features direct fire capability.

Sweden Orders Eight New Mortar Vessels Equipped with Patria NEMO

Sweden has announced its intention to enhance its naval capabilities with the purchase of eight new mortar vessels equipped with the Patria NEMO mortar system. The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) is overseeing this procurement, having selected Swede Ship Marine AB for the construction of the vessels, with Patria acting as a subcontractor for the project.

Mats Hamrin, the Key Account Manager for the Nordics at Patria, emphasized the effective collaboration between Sweden and Finland in achieving this goal. "Our joint efforts will result in an optimal solution for the Swedish Armed Forces, demonstrating the effective collaboration between Sweden and Finland in the defense sector," he stated.

The Patria NEMO Navy system is known for its innovative, compact, and lightweight design, offering a 120 mm turreted mortar solution ideal for rapid naval maneuvers. The FMV's order includes two Patria NEMO Container systems, intended to enhance the Swedish Armed Forces' indirect fire capabilities from maritime platforms.

The Patria NEMO mortar is designed to provide a flexible and powerful fire solution on the battlefield. This system is capable of engaging in network-centric warfare operations, with indirect, direct, and Multiple Rounds Simultaneous Impact (MRSI) firing capabilities thanks to a direct lay functionality. It can be mounted on various vehicles, as shown here on a ship.

Weighing 1900 kg, the mortar's turret features an automatic aiming system and can perform a full 360-degree rotation, allowing for significant action flexibility. The elevation range of the barrel goes from -3 to +85 degrees, with an aiming system that can be operated electrically, with a manual backup option. The mortar, with a caliber of 120 mm smoothbore and a barrel length of 3000 mm, is equipped with an electrical or semi-automatic loading system and a hydro-pneumatic recoiling system to reduce the stresses on the carrier.

The ammunition carrying capacity varies depending on the carrier vehicle but typically ranges between 50 and 60 rounds. The secondary armament system includes a machine gun and smoke launchers, increasing the mortar's versatility in various combat situations. The firing performance is impressive, with a time to open fire of less than 30 seconds and the ability to move immediately after firing, supporting a maximum rate of fire of 10 rounds per minute and a sustained rate of 6 rounds per minute. The first three rounds can be fired in 15 seconds, with a maximum range of over 10 kilometers and the ability to launch up to five rounds for simultaneous impacts.

Intended for use by the amphibious forces based in Stockholm and Gothenburg, these new vessels are part of the Amfbat 2030 initiative, aimed at enhancing combat forces' mobility, speed, and striking power. "The addition of these mortar vessels is crucial to the realization of the Amfbat 2030 vision," Hamrin confirmed.

In collaboration with Swede Ship Marine, known for its extensive expertise in shipbuilding, Patria plans to deliver the first fully equipped vessel to the FMV by the beginning of 2027, with the completion of the order expected by the end of 2028. Hamrin highlighted the significance of this project as a major international benchmark, underscoring the high-quality standards demanded by the Swedish Armed Forces.
