Brazil suspends sale of aircraft carrier São Paulo

Brazil has decided to suspend the sale of its former aircraft carrier NAe São Paulo. No reasons were given and also no dates on when the bidding to dismantle the warship will resume.

The former French Navy carrier has about 900 tonnes of asbestos and heavy metals in its structure and the French government had requested that the ship be dismantled at a European Union shipyard.

Before the bidding was suspended, only one company was qualified for the bidding.

Japan leaning towards building frigate based missile ship to host BMD interceptors

The latest report from Japan on finding an alternative Aegis Ashore solution says Tokyo is now considering building a frigate based missile ship that will host the ballistic missile defense (BMD) interceptors.

The warship is be stripped of other war fighting roles and will require less manpower to operate.

It is likely that the ship will be data linked to the Aegis Ashore radar facility using satellite connection.

A decision is expected by the end of the year.

VARD secures contract for three coast guard vessels for the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (bericht uit 2018)

We are pleased to announce a new contract for the construction of three coast guard vessels for the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency ("NDMA") in Norway. The value of the contract exceeds NOK 5 billion.

The Norwegian Government had originally announced plans for the construction of three new coast guard vessels in September 2016. Following review of offers from three competing yards, Vard Langsten was selected to continue negotiations in October 2017. The investments were approved by the Norwegian Parliament in the beginning of June 2018, and the final negotiations have been completed and finalized in the following weeks.

The purpose of the new series of vessels is to replace the Nordkapp-class coast guard vessels. The new tailor-made vessels are developed for worldwide operations in all weather and sea conditions, both inshore and offshore. Specially designed to withstand operations in demanding arctic areas, the new coast guard vessels will have ice-strengthened hull and ice-class notation, and will be built according to the latest requirements for such specialized vessels. With a length of 136 meters and a beam of 22 meters, the vessels feature strong ocean-going capacities for long-distance transits, search-and-rescue operations, surveillance, and oil recovery.

VARD has based its offer on the reference design developed by LMG Marin on behalf of NDMA. VARD has, in cooperation with LMG Marin further developed the concept design in order to ensure that all requirements and needs demanded by NDMA are solved with a high focus on sustainability, life cycle cost and reliability.

Mr. Roy Reite, CEO and Executive Director of VARD, commented: "Our longstanding experience in the design and shipbuilding of highly specialized vessels has been of vital importance in the competition and development of this project. Our strength lies in recognizing and understanding the customer's and the market's needs, and introducing innovative solutions based on the vessel's objective, services, operative window and geographical scope. We have worked hard to achieve this contract and are excited to be awarded."

Ms. Mette Sørfonden, Director General of NDMA, commented: "Due to national security interests, the Norwegian Government decided that the competition should be restricted to Norwegian yards only. Vard Group with its Vard Langsten yard was the provider that overall satisfied the defined requirements for solution and the Navy and the Coast Guard's needs in the best manner."

Mr. Roy Reite, added: "It is a pleasure to cooperate with NDMA's team again. We have previously built several unique and state-of-the-art vessels together, and we look forward to building the Norwegian Coast Guard's new flagships."

Deliveries of the three vessels are scheduled from Vard Langsten in Norway in 1Q 2022, 1Q 2023 and 1Q 2024 respectively. The hulls will be built at Vard Tulcea in Romania.

Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (NDMA) / Forsvarsmateriell (FMA) is an agency directly subordinate to the Royal Norwegian Ministry of Defence. The main task is to continuously develop and modernize the Norwegian Armed forces.

First Supply-class AOR for Royal Australian Navy completes sea trials

13 AUGUST 2020

by Gabriel Dominguez

The first of two Supply-class auxiliary oiler replenishment (AOR) ships on order for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) has completed sea acceptance trails, Spanish shipbuilder Navantia announced in a tweet on 10 August.

The company also tweeted that the 19,500-tonne vessel, which will be known as HMAS Supply (II) (with pennant number A195) once commissioned, will be sailing later this month from the company's facilities in the Spanish coastal city of Ferrol to Australia for her "Australian fit-out".

The vessel, which is expected to enter service later this year, is one of two ships of the class ordered as part of an AUD642 million (USD460 million) contract signed in May 2016 under Australia's Project Sea 1654 Phase 3 Maritime Operational Support Capability programme.

Second-of-class Stalwart (III) (with pennant number A304) was launched on 30 August, and is expected to join the RAN in 2022.

The 173.9 m-long ships, which are based on the Spanish Navy's Cantabria-class AORs, are to replace the AOR ship HMAS Success (II), which was decommissioned on 29 June after 33 years of service, and the supply ship HMAS Sirius .

The two new AOR ships are intended to carry fuel, dry cargo, water, food, ammunition, equipment, and spare parts to provide operational support for the deployed naval or combat forces operating on the high seas for longer periods.

Ford class:
2 × RIM-162 ESSM launchers
2 × RIM-116 RAM
3 × Phalanx CIWS
4 × M2 .50 Cal. (12.7 mm) machine guns

Nimitz:
2-3 x 8 cell Sea Sparrow launchers
3-4 Phalanx/RAM

America class:
Two Rolling Airframe Missile launchers
two Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile launchers
two Phalanx CIWS
seven dual .50 caliber machine guns

Charles de Gaulle:
4 × 8 cell A-43 Sylver launchers carrying the MBDA Aster 15 surface-to-air missile.
2 × 6 cell Sadral launchers carrying Mistral short range missiles
8 × Giat 20F2 20 mm cannons.(waarvan 3 Narwhals, 3 stuks worden ook gemonteerd op de 2 Horizon AAW destroyers, de FREMMs en Mistrals krijgen er ook elk 2)

Cavour:
4 × 8-cell A-43 Sylver launchers carrying the MBDA Aster 15 surface-to-air missile
2 × Oto Melara 76/62 mm Strales guns
3 × Oerlikon Contraves 25/80 mm Anti-aircraft guns
2 x ODLS-H/ODLS OTO Melara decoy launching systems
