UK MoD Signs Contract With Team Resolute For 3 Logistic Ships For The Royal Navy

The UK Ministry of Defense has formally awarded 'Team Resolute' the Fleet Solid Support (FSS) program contract for the construction of three logistics vessels for the Royal Navy Auxiliary Fleet.

Navantia press release ? Translated by Naval News

?Team Resolute? is made up of the UK companies Harland & Wolff, BMT and Navantia UK, a British subsidiary of the Spanish company Navantia. The program, valued at 1,600 million pounds sterling, will provide the Royal Navy with a key capacity for the provisioning of its fleet, based on the British design of BMT and with transfer of ?Shipyard 4.0? technology by Navantia.

The UK Defense Minister, Ben Wallace, visited the Harland & Wolff shipyard in the northern Irish city of Belfast on Wednesday, where the ships will be integrated, accompanied by the Minister for Northern Ireland, Chris Heaton-Harris, and the heads of the participating companies: Ricardo Dom?nguez (Navantia), Sarah Kenny (BMT) and John Wood (Harland & Wolff).

The construction of the blocks that will make up the ships will be carried out at the Harland & Wolff shipyards in Belfast (Northern Ireland) and Appledore (south-west United Kingdom), as well as at the Navantia shipyard in Puerto Real (C?diz).

Citaat?Team Resolute will develop a modern, robust and thriving shipbuilding industry in Belfast that will support shipbuilding in the future. By collaborating with Navantia, one of the world?s leading builders, we want to bring their knowledge and support and ensure that this is a long-term collaboration going into the future.?
Ben Wallace, UK Defence Minister

?Navantia is proud to be part of this program that recognizes our technological excellence and that will mean industrial activity, qualified jobs and prosperity for both countries. Navantia UK is proof of our commitment to the United Kingdom?, declared the president of Navantia, Ricardo Dom?nguez.

The three FSS ships will be tasked with supplying solid stores and ammunition to Royal Navy ships deployed on missions. With a total length of 216 meters each ? the equivalent of the length of two football fields ? they will be among the largest ships in the British fleet, behind only the ?Queen Elizabeth? class aircraft carriers.

The program will involve more than 14 million hours of work in Spain and the United Kingdom. Production of the blocks will start in 2025 and the three vessels will be operational in 2032.

?Team Resolute? will contribute to the National Shipbuilding Strategy of the United Kingdom by promoting the modernization of facilities and the training of workers. The consortium will invest ?77m in revitalizing UK shipbuilding infrastructure and a further ?21m in knowledge and technology transfer from Navantia UK, creating one of the UK?s most advanced shipyards, critically important for future exports and national shipbuilding.

UK purchases commercial vessel for conversion to ocean surveillance ship
The offshore support vessel, MV Topaz Tangaroa has been purchased by the UK Ministry of Defence for conversion to a Multi-Role Ocean Surveillance (MROS) ship. She will arrive at Cammell Laird shipyard on Merseyside this week for conversion and will serve in the Royal Fleet Auxiliary renamed RFA Proteus.

Proteus will be dedicated to safeguarding critical seabed infrastructure and will act as a ?mother ship?, operating remote and autonomous off-board systems for underwater surveillance and seabed warfare.

The vessel was purchased for ?70 Million from Topaz Marine, a subsidiary of P&O Maritime. This modern, 6,000-tonne ship was built in 2019 for work in the offshore oil industry supporting construction, maintenance and inspection work and is equipped to operate autonomous submersibles. VARD designed her and the hull was built by their Tulcea shipyard in Romania and fitted out at their Brattvaag facility in Norway.

The idea is for ?a scientific ship, which will be a kind of base on the high seas, equipped with scientific laboratories, accommodation for 90 people permanently and another 100 if necessary, for example, in an emergency evacuation situation, ramps for loading and unloading vehicles, heliport, tracks for aerial drones, a bay for underwater drones and speedboats, various cranes for hoisting research material ? a ?platform for projecting capabilities?.

The Navy maintains the ?ship will contribute to knowledge, preservation and sustained exploration of the ocean, to direct support for populations in response to crises and to the strengthening of the country?s operational and scientific capacity, particularly for the mapping and protection of living and non-living resources, but also for surveillance and maritime surveillance, maritime search and rescue and response to maritime accidents, mainly using Unmanned Vehicles (VENT) to perform their tasks?.

In its application for PRR funding, the Navy stressed that ?this vessel, idealised under a new concept of operation, has no military requirements and is not armed. Its main functions are environmental monitoring, namely in the fight against maritime pollution, fishing surveillance, preservation of resources, development of knowledge and research in hydrographic and scientific areas?.

?Innovative? and ?disruptive? ?100 million project finds no takers

The tender for construction of ?a pioneering naval platform? with the capacity to project multiple capabilities, essentially robotic and unmanned systems (aerial, land drones and submarines), has fallen flat.

The brain-child of Admiral Gouveia e Melo ? the former vaccine ?czar? who is now being increasingly tipped as a candidate for Presidency of the Republic ? had been billed as an ?innovative? and ?disruptive? project that would effectively take the Navy to a new and exciting level

Financing of ?100 million has been set aside in the PRR (Plan for Recovery and Resilience) ? but now this stumbling block: no-one seems suitably interested.

Damen Partner LINEAL Engineering Opens New Office On Colombia?s Caribbean Coast

LINEAL Engineering, Damen?s partner in Colombia, has opened a new office in Barranquilla on Colombia?s Caribbean coast for supporting its governmental and naval customers.

Damen press release

Damen?s partner in Colombia, LINEAL Engineering, has opened a new office in Barranquilla on Colombia?s Caribbean coast. Since the company was founded five years ago it has been based in the inland capital, Bogot?, an ideal location for supporting its governmental and naval customers. The addition of an office in Barranquilla now enables it to provide an enhanced level of service to its private sector clients.

The new office has both sales and engineering personnel and they will be focusing primarily on the harbour & terminal and dredging sectors, as well as supporting vessels of other types. The Caribbean is an important market for the Damen Group. Recent collaborations include the signing of a contract in September by COTECMAR and Damen for the co-development of the contractual design for the next generation of frigates for the Colombian Navy. And previously, in 2019, the two groups agreed to collaborate on the design and build of a long range, 83-metre, scientific marine research vessel for the DIMAR maritime authority. This has taken place under Damen?s Technical Cooperation programme and the completed vessel has been successfully delivered last month.

Working with LINEAL Engineering, Damen has good relationships with local shipyards and owners, offering a range of services that include not only support for new builds, maintenance and spare parts but also training, finance and other services that support vessels throughout their lives.

LINEAL Engineering also works with Damen?s Service Hub in Panama City, its third hub in the Americas. Opened in January this year, it also offers a full range of technical and service / warranty support for both Damen-built and third-party vessels right across the Caribbean. Directly supported by Damen?s head office, the majority of its staff are recruited locally and service engineers are positioned around the region to ensure rapid responses to enquiries.

The team is set to expand in the months ahead as demand grows for its services. Its main areas of activity are, in the private sector, harbour vessels including tugs, workboats and pilot vessels and, in the public sector, patrol boats and ancillary vessels for navies, coastguards and other agencies. Colombia?s new marine research vessel will also be supported by the Panama Hub once it enters active service.
