Air Force releases Bridge Tanker Sources Sought Announcement

Air Force Life Cycle Management Center Public Affairs / Published June 17, 2021

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB, Ohio (AFNS) --
The Air Force Life Cycle Management Center issued a Sources Sought Announcement for the Bridge Tanker Program to determine the number of qualified, interested companies capable of providing solutions for the planned, non-developmental tanker recapitalization program.

The Air Force is seeking companies that have the capability to deliver commercial derivative tanker aircraft to supplement the Air Force tanker aircraft fleet at the end of KC-46A Pegasus production.

The new aircraft will bridge the gap to the next Advanced Air Refueling Tanker recapitalization phase, previously referred to as "KC-Z." The existing KC-46A firm-fixed price contract is limited to 13 production lots, with the last planned procurement in 2027 and delivered in 2029.

As a commercial derivative aircraft, the Bridge Tanker will be based on existing and emerging technologies with a full and open acquisition competition. Neither developmental stealth nor unmanned capability is planned.

The requirements for Bridge Tanker are currently being defined and the necessary capabilities will be incorporated into the final Request for Proposal once it is validated through the Department of Defense's joint staffing process. The Air Force plans to release the final RFP by the end of 2022.

The KC-135 Stratotanker will be 70 years old when the Air Force expects to receive its last KC-46 delivery in 2029, and replacing these vital aircraft continues to be critical to the Air Force mission to project Rapid Global Mobility in today's strategically competitive environment.

Another Boeing-Airbus tanker war is coming soon

oeing and Airbus could find themselves duking it out as early as next year to provide aerial refueling aircraft to the U.S. Air Force, reigniting a bitter battle between Boeing's KC-46 and Airbus's A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport.

The Air Force on Tuesday released a sources sought notice for a non developmental tanker aircraft known as KC-Y that would bridge the gap between KC-46 and the next-generation KC-Z tanker.

The Air Force is looking for companies that could deliver as many as 15 commercial derivative tankers a year, with the new bridge tanker operational in 2029 — the same year the last KC-46 is due to be delivered.

The service plans to buy 140 to 160 KC-Ys to continue the replacement of its aging KC-135 fleet, which will be 70 years old when the bridge tanker is fielded, the solicitation stated. The competition could start as early as 2022, when the service issues a final request for proposals.

The Air Force provided few details on how KC-Y would differ from KC-46, only saying that it is still finalizing its requirements.

First MEDEVAC MRTT delivered to MMU

20 NOVEMBER 2020

by Gareth Jennings

The first of its Airbus A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft to be configured for the medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) role has been received by the Multinational Multirole Tanker Transport Unit (MMU) at Eindhoven airbase in the Netherlands.

The milestone, announced on 19 November, saw Multinational Multi-Role Tanker and Transport Fleet (MMF) aircraft MMF3/T-056 delivered after having been outfitted with its MEDEVAC equipment at the MMU's forward operating base at Cologne-Wahn airbase in Germany.

The MMF capability comprises NATO members Belgium, the Czech Republic, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Norway, with the MMU operating unit composed of military personnel from these six participating nations. To date, three of nine MRTT aircraft have now been delivered to the MMU with the remainder set to be handed over through to 2024.

Managed by the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) with support from the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR), the MMF capability will provide the participating nations pooled access to aerial refuelling (hose-and-drogue and boom/receptacle), strategic passenger and cargo airlift, as well as MEDEVAC capabilities. Five MRTTs will operate from the main operating base at Eindhoven airbase, and three from the forward operating base at Cologne-Wahn airbase. To ensure a permanent MEDEVAC capability, one of the aircraft located at Cologne-Wahn will be on permanent standby in this configuration as of the end of 2021.

9e Airbus A330 MRTT voor vliegtuigpool NAVO

Nieuwsbericht | 29-09-2020 | 09:13
