Oorlogsvoeren is serious business.

For the time being. Inclusief bewapening trouwens!!.

(zie artikel elders).

Predator In the Air for 24 Consecutive Hours

For the first time during an operational mission in Afghanistan, a Predator remotely-piloted vehicle flew for 24 consecutive hours and carried out four separate missions without landing. This milestone, achieved in December, is a credit to all of the Aeronautica Militare personnel belonging to Task Group 'Astore'.

During the same 24 hours, Predator aircraft n° AV0002 flew mostly over the Bakwa district, supporting a patrol of Task Force 'Victor' whose mission was to monitor the itinerary to be followed by an Italian vehicle convoy.

The aircraft first monitored a major redeployment of Task Force 'South East' as it pulled out of 'Lavaredo' base in Bakwa, which was turned over to the Afghan army. In the same district, the Predator then assisted two AM-X fighter-bombers who launched two laser-guided bombs to destroy two radio-communications antennas used by a group of insurgents operating in the same area. Finally, the aircraft surveyed and mapped a village where an insurgent weapons depot had been reported near Shindand, where Task Force 'Center' is deployed.

This milestone mission, which exceeds the previous record by almost two hours, is the result of detailed planning of the mission's every aspect. To guarantee its success, the crews – comprising pilots, analysts, flight engineers and maintenance technicians – alternated every two hours, using their "off" times to monitor tasks, weather conditions as well as resting.

Col. Carlo Moscini, commander of JATF – the task force which manages the Italian air force's flight assets in Afghanistan – praised the "actors of this important aviation milestone for their professionalism and their dedication in the use of the MQ-1C Predator aircraft, which is extremely useful for supporting forces operating on the ground."

Task Force 'Astore' is part of Joint Air Task Force and operates in-theater the MQ-1C Predator remotely-piloted aircraft belonging to the 32° Stormo (squadron). It carries out ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconaissance) missions in support of national and coalition ground troops, and thereby contributes to the situation awareness of ISAF forces.

"Europeanizing" Predator B

With France's new defense strategy due out next month, and a new multiyear spending plan expected by March, French lawmakers are favoring a purchase of U.S. MQ-9 Reapers in support of the military's short-term requirement for Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) drones. Such a move, they say, could save money while offering an opportunity to develop a European variant of the General Atomics-built unmanned aerial system (UAS).

"Discussions are underway with General Atomics to build these American drones with European sensors and armaments," members of France's European affairs committee said in an interim report on European defense posture released in December. "Reapers are American and less expensive than European programs."

Given that the system is in service with U.K. and Italy, with Germany and Poland also considering Reaper buys, "the favored scenario is to start with a Europeanization of equipment, then gradually the drone itself."

Northrop Grumman Reveals Bigger Firebird

A two-seat production derivative of Northrop Grumman's secretly developed Firebird medium-altitude optionally piloted vehicle (OPV) demonstrator has begun test flights for an unidentified customer.

Flown by two Northrop test pilots, the OPV made its first flight from Mojave, Calif., on Nov. 12. Powered by a single Lycoming TEO-540E piston engine, the twin-boom configured aircraft climbed to 3,880 ft. and reached a maximum speed of 100 kt. during a short, 6-min. circuit.

Some 30% larger than the Firebird demonstrator unveiled in 2011, the production-ready variant is 35.5 ft. in length and has a wingspan of 72.2 ft. The second pilot position was added at the request of the customer, adding a new dimension to the concept of a purpose-designed UAV with the option of an onboard pilot.

The original single-seater version was designed to enable the Firebird to transit through commercial airspace as a conventional aircraft. According to Northrop, the addition of the second seat now gives users the option of a co-pilot and/or sensor systems operator position, while retaining the original goal of providing a low-cost platform for persistent surveillance.

If not being operated in piloted mode, the Firebird UAV is designed to be commanded by a ground station to operate in either line-of-sight (LOS) unmanned mode or beyond-LOS mode. "If you want to go farther [beyond LOS] the canopy comes off, the Garmin [pilot's avionics] system comes out of the flight panel and an L3 satcom antenna goes in," says Firebird Program Manager Jerry Madigan.

With a unit cost of $10 million, including avionics and a baseline sensor, the production Firebird is "the perfect replacement for the aging, inefficient and unsustainable fleet of special mission aircraft," Madigan says. "Some [potential users] are looking at asymmetric warfare situations where aircraft like the [Hawker Beechcraft] King Air or Cessna Caravan do not have the endurance or the versatility," he adds.

Interest in Firebird grew after the OPV flew at the 2011 Empire Challenge, the final interoperability and intelligence-sharing exercise run before the disbanding of U.S. Joint Forces Command. "At Empire Challenge everybody saw us out there. Before that we kind of kept it quiet," Madigan says. In all we have flown 12 different payloads, and at Empire Challenge we flew four payloads that we never tested before. These included electro-optic/infrared, radar and a communications relay."

Although Firebird's presence at the exercise was sponsored by the U.S. Army, other potentially more immediate customers at the event included U.S. Special Operations Command (Socom). Northrop previously said Socom was interested in Firebird, but Madigan says only that "we competed for an undisclosed customer and we won and they have certain requirements, including a two-seat, production-standard vehicle."

The initial production contract calls for assembly of two vehicles per year for the next five years.
