Het Italiaanse M fregat  - PPA (Pattugliatori Polivalenti d'Altura)

Tuesday, 05 May 2015

The Multipurpose Combat Ship Programme PPA (Pattugliatori Polivalenti d'Altura) and the Logistic Support Ship Programme LSS (Logistic Support Ship) have been formally integrated into OCCAR on 4 May 2015 with the confirmation of the PPA and LSS Programme Decisions and the respective contracts by the Italian authorities.

Both programmes are currently managed on behalf of Italy as the Programme Participating State. The successful integration into OCCAR of these two modern ship programmes means a major expansion of the OCCAR Programme portfolio. OCCAR now manages 11 European Armament Programmes in various capability and technology areas, including also the Maritime Mine Counter Measures (MMCM) Programme which was integrated in March 2015.

The two classes of ships have been conceived, since the beginning, with enhanced "dual use" features, fit for traditional military tasks and also ble to intervene during peace time, supporting Humanitarian and Disaster Relief Assistance Operations (i.e. modular hospital, electrical power/drinkable water ashore and containers). In other words, the ships are able to provide maritime security in war and in peacetime, 365 days per year.

The Pattugliatori Polivalenti d'Altura - PPA vessels represent the best example of a "one-size-fits-all warship" designed to perform a wide spectrum of missions, thanks to their remarkable capabilities in terms of modularity and flexibility.

The ships will replace patrol ships, corvettes and frigates and will initially be delivered in a full and a light configuration.

The Programme includes Development and Production of six ships (five in light and one in full configuration; with an option for another four ships) and the In Service Support for ten years.
The delivery of the First of Class is planned in 2020 for the light configuration (FOC L) and 2023 for the full configuration (FOC F).

The OCCAR-EA PPA Programme Division is located in Rome, Italy.

The Logistic Support Ship - LSS will be capable of supporting a naval Joint Task Force, to support disaster relief operations, to provide medical support (NATO Role 2 LM) and to transport naval and aviation fuel, fresh water, ammunitions, lubricating oil, food, spare parts and 20 ft ISO containers.

The LSS Programme includes Development and Production of one ship and the In Service Support for ten years. The delivery of the LSS is planned for 2019.

The OCCAR-EA LSS Programme Division is located in La Spezia, Italy.

Leonardo presents its capabilities for Italian Navy multipurpose patrol ships at Euronaval 2016

The Italian Navy has released fresh details about its seven new multifunctional ships with Combat Management System developed by Leonardo-Finmeccanica.

For the PPAs (Pattugliatore Polivalente D'Altura)), Leonardo offers a next generation, open architecture, modular and reconfigurable Combat Management System. The bridge is provided with an innovative system named "cockpit" created alongside Fincantieri, which for the first time will allow the integrated management of both vessel navigation and combat system operations, with a reduced number of operators, thanks to the use of augmented reality technologies. The new systems provided by Leonardo include the new multi-sensor fire control radar, a new multifunction Active Electronically Scanned Array radar with four dual band C and X-band radars (DBRs), next generation IFF sensors (Identification Friend & Foe) with circular antenna and the innovative static IRST (InfraRed Search and Track), an infrared sensor for seeking out and tracking targets, based on multiple non-rotating optical heads, distributed over the four sides of the vessel to ensure a seamless 360 degree view.

The PPAs will also be equipped with integrated communication systems which, along with the multi-band satellite systems, also include the new Software Defined Radios. Still for the offshore multipurpose patrol ships, Leonardo will provide the 127/64 LW gun, the most advanced globally in the sector of high-calibre naval guns, thanks to the combination of four elements – the gun assembly, the Automated Ammunition Handling System (AAHS), the Naval Fire Control Support (NFCS) planning system and Vulcano ammunition. The latter is a sub-calibre ammunition, developed in two main variants: guided (GLR) with longer range (100 km) for anti-ship operations or precision shooting against land targets, and non-guided, equipped with a multi-function fuse and that can reach 60 km. In the field of medium calibre weapons, the new "Sovraponte" version of the 76/62 gun will be installed on the PPAs which, in its typical multipurpose function, can be used against airborne, maritime, land and asymmetric targets.

The "Sovraponte" (over deck) version will be equipped with the Strales kit for the use of DART (Driven Ammunition Reduced Time Of Flight) guided ammunition. In the field of small calibre weapons, 25 mm remotely controlled towers will be installed which can be used for the close protection of larger units or, when installed on smaller units, for use in the interdiction of maritime traffic and the fight against smuggling operations. Leonardo will provide the patrol vessels with a torpedo launcher system, the Underwater Telephone, the Bathy Termograph Unit and the Diver Detection Sonar. Finally, MBDAwill provide the airborne defence system and/or the anti-ship system, depending on the configuration of the PPA. For example, the PPAs in the "light" configuration are fitted for possible installation of missiles systems for air and anti-ship defence.

Works Start on the First Multipurpose Offshore Patrol Ship

TRIESTE --- The steel cutting ceremony of the Multipurpose Offshore Patrol Ship (Pattugliatore Polivalente d'Altura, or PPA) took place today at Fincantieri's shipyard in Muggiano (La Spezia), officially marking the beginning of construction works on the first unit.

The ceremony was attended among others by the Undersecretary of State for Defence, Domenico Rossi, by the Chief of Staff of the Italian Navy, Admiral Valter Girardelli, by the General Manager of Fincantieri, Alberto Maestrini, and by the Senior Vice President Naval Vessels Business Unit & Italy Business Unit of Fincantieri, Angelo Fusco.

The PPA, first of seven units, will be delivered in 2021 and it is part of the renewal plan of the operational lines of the Italian Navy vessels, approved by the Government and Parliament and started in May 2015.

The project as a whole involves the construction of nine units, including seven PPAs, one multipurpose amphibious unit (LHD or Landing Helicopter Dock), and one logistic support unit (LSS or Logistic Support Ship).

RINA Services is also involved in the program. The experience gained in a number of past projects, as well as the close cooperation with the Italian Navy at international level for the development of the Naval Ship Code (a standard equivalent to the SOLAS - Safety of Life at Sea, but applicable to naval vessels, developed by the International Naval Safety Association which includes RINA, the Italian Navy and the main NATO's Navies) have allowed to fine-tune the ways of cooperating, overcoming the traditional concept of class and taking the specific technical and operational needs of the Navy into greater account.

Vessel's characteristics: PPA – Multipurpose Offshore Patrol Ship

The multipurpose offshore patrol vessel is a highly flexible ship with the capacity to serve multiple functions, ranging from patrol with sea rescue capacity to Civil Protection operations and, in its most highly equipped version, first line fighting vessel. There will be indeed different configurations of combat system: starting from a "soft" version for the patrol task, integrated for self-defence ability, to a "full" one, equipped for a complete defence ability.

The vessel is also capable of operating high-speed vessels such as RHIB (Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat) up to 11 meters long through lateral cranes or a hauling ramp located at the far stern.

-- 132.5 meters long
-- Speed: more than 33 knots according to vessel configuration and operational conditions
-- 171 persons of the crew
-- Equipped with a combined diesel, a gas turbine plant (CODAG) and an electric propulsion system
-- Capacity to supply drinking water to land
-- Capacity to provide electricity to land with 2000 kw of power
-- 2 modular zones at the stern and at the center of the ship that allow the embarking of various types of containerized operating/logistic/residential/healthcare modules (in particular, the stern area may receive and handle within a covered area up to 5 modules in ISO 20" containers, while the central zone may receive and handle up to 8 ISO 20" containers)

The PPAs will be built at the Integrated Shipyard of Riva Trigoso and Muggiano, with delivery expected, for the first vessel of the class, in 2021, while the following deliveries will take place in 2022, 2023, 2024 (two units), 2025 and 2026.

Keel Laying of the First Multipurpose Offshore Patrol Ship

TRIESTE --- The keel laying ceremony of the Multipurpose Offshore Patrol Ship (PPA) took place today at Fincantieri's shipyard in Muggiano (La Spezia).

The PPA, first of seven units, will be delivered in 2021 and it is part of the renewal plan of the operational lines of the Italian Navy vessels, approved by the Government and Parliament and started in May 2015.

Vessel's characteristics: PPA – Multipurpose Offshore Patrol Ship

The main feature of this class of ships is their high level of innovation, which makes them extremely flexible in the different operating profiles with a high degree of efficiency. In particular, these vessels have a dual use profile, the one typically military and the one for civil protection and rescue operations at sea; in addition, they have a low environmental impact obtained with appropriate technological and manufacturing solutions, such as advanced low emission propulsion systems (electric motors).

There will be different configurations of combat system: starting from a "soft" version for the patrol task, integrated for self-defence ability, to a "full" one, equipped for a complete defence ability. The vessel is also capable of operating high-speed vessels such as RHIB (Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat) up to 11 meters long through lateral cranes or a hauling ramp located at the far stern.

Leonardo works on 'Europe's first fully digital' radar

(https://www.armytimes.com/resizer/jtcLnHeGTHoXtIeeES6y94D1NEU=/1200x0/filters:quality(100)/arc-anglerfish-arc2-prod-mco.s3.amazonaws.com/public/T3AQOYEVHFGZRDTILYVJBCEWC4.jpeg)

ROME — Italy's Leonardo is edging closer to producing a fully digital, active electronically scanned array radar — the only one of its kind in Europe according to the firm — with initial components now being manufactured.

The L-band Kronos Power Shield radar is being built for the Italian Navy's new Landing Helicopter Dock vessel.

"We are evolving the new Leonardo AESA radar into a fully digital system, which allows us to manage a bigger amount of data in less time, so enhancing the radar performance," said Renzo Tosini, naval and Air Defence line of business director at Leonardo's Land and Naval Defence Electronics division.

Active Electronically Scanned Array radars use grids of small Transmit Receive Modules, each generating an individual radar beam which can be combined to create a larger, composite, directed radar beam.

With each TRM containing its own power source, the break down of one TRM barely affects overall performance, unlike traditional radars where a sole power source behind the antenna powered the entire radar, meaning total breakdown if the power source was lost.

The key novelty in Leonardo's new radar is that the transmitting and receiving signal is already digital at the level of the single radiating element.

"The new L band radar is based on 'digital' TRMs hosted into so-called 'Digital Active Tile' blocks," said Tosini.

"Going fully digital means the radar transceiver is thinner and allows the radar system to process more information faster," he added.

The roughly 40 square meter rotating radar will offer an instrumental extended surveillance range of 1,500 - 2,000 km.

Italy's Fincantieri started work in July on Italy's new 1.1 billion euro LHD, a 25 knot, 200 metre long vessel that will enter service in around 2022.

The multi-functional radar will equip Italy's LHD and the Landing Platform Dock that Fincantieri will build for Qatar, said Tosini.

The new technology is being developed as Fincantieri enters talks to jointly build warships with France's Naval Group. Politicians in Italy have raised fears that the systems, like radar, which Leonardo has long supplied to Fincantieri ships might be squeezed out of the joint program by kit supplied by France's Thales.

Leonardo is also offering flat panel C and X band radars known as Kronos which will be used on Italy's new multi-purpose PPA frigates.

- 1x 127 mm maingun
- 1x 76 mm CIWS
- 2x 25 mm Autocannon
- 16x VLS cell ; Aster-15 / Aster-30 / SCALP NG
- 8x Otomat mk2 ASuW missile
- 2x 533 mm torpedo tube (blackshark)
- 2x triple 324 mm torpedo tube (MU90)
- 2x NH90 of 1x AW-101
