Russia's Navy to be Fully Modernized by 2050, Get Next-Generation Warships

05.12.2014

Russia has started the implementation of its military shipbuilding program, and aims to fully modernize its Navy, supplying it with over 600 surface ships, submarines and other auxiliary ships by 2050.

MOSCOW, December 5 (Sputnik) – Russia has started the implementation of its long-term military shipbuilding program, according to Russia's parliamentary newspaper Rossiiskaya Gazeta.

The Navy is to get over 600 surface ships, submarines and auxiliary ships by 2050.

The key developer of the next-generation warships is Krylov State Research Center in St. Petersburg.

Russia's Defense Ministry has already approved the technical design specifications for its Leader class destroyers.

The next-generation warships will be most likely be equipped with a Caliber high-precision cruise missile system and a S-500 Prometey antiaircraft defense system, which is more capable than US Aegis Ballistic Missile defense systems.

Each destroyer will have a Redut-Poliment anti-ship weapons system as well as Pantsir-M and Palash antiaircraft artillery.

The destroyer's nuclear-powered and gas turbine propulsion power plant will be manufactured in Russia and will allow the ships to travel at 30 knots.

The warships will be capable of combatting submarines and will also be equipped with two special helicopters and a modern sonar system.

Russia's Black Sea Fleet Will Get 80 New Warships to Repel NATO

By Matthew Bodner
Sep. 23 2014

Russia will construct a second naval base on the Black Sea and reinforce its fleet with 80 warships to ward off an what it sees as an increasing NATO presence in the waters around the recently annexed Crimean Peninsula, the head of the Russia's Black Sea fleet said Tuesday.

A new base in the city of Novorossiisk will be built be 2016, and by the end of the decade Russia's Black Sea force will tally 206 ships, Admiral Alexander Vitko was quoted as saying by state news agency TASS.

"With Crimea's return to Russia, the relevance of this base has increased due to the fact that NATO ships are consistently present in the Black Sea," Vitko told President Vladimir Putin, who visited the construction site of the new base in Novorossiisk on Tuesday.

Moscow views the Black Sea as strategically significant because of its proximity to several areas of potential conflict, such as Ukraine and Georgia, and the Kremlin fears Western intervention in the region. The Black Sea also serves as a springboard for Russian naval expansion into the Mediterranean Sea — a capability sought by Russia for centuries but lost with the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Vitko said Novorossiisk would become the epicenter of Russia's naval buildup in the Black Sea because the historic Crimean port of Sevastopol does not have room for additional naval facilities and expanded civilian shipping infrastructure.

Russia has tapped Sevastopol to become a hub for Russian commercial shipping as the government works to integrate Crimea, which Moscow annexed from Ukraine in March, into Russia.

That land grab spiraled into the worst Russia-West standoff since the Cold War and has revitalized the West's military alliance, NATO.

By 2016, the Black Sea Fleet will receive six brand-new Kilo-class submarines that will be stationed at Novorossiisk. The Kilo submarines are ideal for operating in the Black Sea, and are particularly adept at hunting enemy surface vessels, such as those NATO vessels patrolling the Black Sea.

Since Crimea's annexation in late March, the Russian media has made a point of regularly announcing the arrival of NATO vessels on patrol in the Black Sea.

Vitko also on Tuesday stoked Russian fears by saying NATO was planning to build a new base on the Black Sea. A NATO source told Reuters that he was unaware of any such plans.

Three NATO countries — Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey — have stretches of coastline on the Black Sea and bases that could be used by the 28-member alliance.

Russian Krivak IV (Project 11356) guided-missile frigate

The Project 11356 is a guided-missile frigate designed to counter surface ships, submarines and airborne targets operating alone or embedded into convoys. Due to the use of stealth technologies and a special hull design, the resulting frigate features reduced radar cross section (RCS) as well as electromagnetic, acoustic and infrared signatures. Equipped with state-of-the-art Russian-made sensors and weapon systems, the Project 11356 frigate is a modern ship with balanced capabilities capable of countering modern Western naval assets.

The ship's propulsion system comprises a two-shaft gas-turbine plant each developing 28,000-hp of power which allows for a top speed of 30-kt and an economic speed of 14 knots. The ship's maximum range at economic speed is approx. 5,000 nautical miles. The electric power is provided by four 800Kw WCM800/5-type diesel generators. The cornerstone of the advanced sensors provided to the Project 11356 frigate is the Fregat M2EM air/surface surveillance radar. A flight deck and hangar allow operation of one Ka-28 or Ka-31 helicopter.

The Project 11356 frigate is equipped with the Shtil-1 medium range air defense system with 24 9M38 missiles and one 3S-14E eight-tube under-deck launcher with eight 3M-54TE/Club-N supersonic anti-ship missiles. In addition, the ship is provided with one 100mm AK-190 naval gun with 500 rounds, two Kashtan close-in weapon systems with 64 9M311-1 missiles, RBU-6000 12-tube anti-submarine warfare (ASW) mortar, and two 533mm torpedo tubes. Additional protection is provided with the ship's ECM and decoy systems.

The Indian government and the government of Russia signed a follow-on contract for the purchase of three additional Project 1135.6 frigates for the Indian Navy on July 14, 2006. These ships will be built at Yantar Shipyard in Kaliningrad. The first frigate is scheduled for delivery in April 2011. These ships will feature BrahMos supersonic anti-ship cruise missile instead of the Club-N/3M54TE missile system which was provided to the INS Talwar, INS Trishul and INS Tabar frigates.

Russian Frigates to Get Advanced Missile Systems

ST. PETERSBURG, March 18 (RIA Novosti) - Russia will install Kalibr (SS-N-27 Sizzler) missile systems on three of its Project 11356 frigates, the Baltic shipbuilding plant said on Monday.

The plant, affiliated with the United Shipbuilding Corporation, will manufacture the missile systems for the Yantar shipyard before the end of 2014.

"Under an existing contract, the Baltic plant will install Kalibr systems on the first troika of frigates," the plant said, adding that the next three frigates are also expected to be equipped with Kalibr missiles.

The Kalibr is capable of effectively engaging aerial, submerged and coastal targets, and has a range of up to 185 miles.

The Project 11356 Krivak IV-class is a guided-missile frigate designed to counter surface ships, submarines and airborne targets.

RF Navy to get 24 subs, 54 surface ships before end of 2020

11/03/2013ITAR-TASS

The Russian Navy will get 24 submarines and 54 surface ships before the end of 2020, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said at a video conference on Monday.

"As a result of the implementation of the state armament program, the Navy is to receive eight missile submarine cruisers and 16 multipurpose submarines, 54 surface ships of different class," he said.

According to Shoigu, the renovation of the naval composition is the most important component of development of the Navy. "However, it is impossible to preserve the Navy's combat potential without maintaining the required level of its technical readiness," the minister noted.

He stressed that as of 2011 the technical maintenance of ships is carried out within the framework of a three-year contract with the unified ship-building corporation. The conclusion of a new contract, as Shoigu added, is to be held in December.
