New Zealand faces higher hurdles using its military helicopters alongside its defence partners now that Australia is switching choppers.

Australia, which grounded its fleet after a water landing last month, is switching to US-made machines.

So too is Norway, which is fed up and wants half-a-billion dollars back from NHIndustries (NHI), the European manufacturer of the NH90 helicopter range.

Army postpones production decision for UH-60V Black Hawk cockpit redesign

?The milestone decision authority is following a very deliberate and rigorous review process to ensure that the 60V is ready for full-rate production,? a spokesperson for the Program Executive Office for Aviation told Breaking Defense.

The US Army has postponed making a full-rate production decision on its UH-60V Black Hawk upgrade with new digital cockpit until it completes a ?deliberate and rigorous review? of the Northrop Grumman design, a service official told Breaking Defense. The postponement comes after the service revealed it plans to invest in fewer of the upgrades than previously indicated.

In August 2022, the Army completed an essential test and evaluation event with the digital cockpit to determine if past glitches had been adequately fixed. At that time, the service billed the test as ?successful? and noted that the Army Test and Evaluation Command?s operational evaluation report would be released in December 2022, with plans to make a full-rate production decision by the end of this March. That key milestone date has now come and gone.

?The Army has not made a full-rate production decision for the UH-60V,? a spokesperson for the Program Executive Office for Aviation wrote in an April 20 statement to Breaking Defense. ?The milestone decision authority is following a very deliberate and rigorous review process to ensure that the 60V is ready for full-rate production. The decision will be made when the review is complete.?

US Army preps mission tech for future helicopter, despite engine delay

Despite a delay in new engine technology, the U.S. Army is continuing to develop systems for its Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft that go beyond the airframe, according to the two-star general in charge of the service?s vertical lift modernization.

As part of the Improved Turbine Engine Program, a General Electric Aerospace-developed engine will replace those in the UH-60 Black Hawk and AH-64 Apache helicopters, and power the Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft. But the FARA effort is delayed since prototype flights reliant on the new engine won?t take place until the fourth quarter of fiscal 2024, according to the latest Army budget documents.

The plan was to execute a first flight for each aircraft in late 2023. That flight schedule had already been postponed by roughly a year, according to a comparison of FY22 and FY23 budget documents.

Both competitors ? Textron?s Bell and Lockheed Martin?s Sikorsky ? have said their FARA prototypes are built and just awaiting the new engine.

Sikorsky-Boeing?s FLRAA bid was much cheaper, but couldn?t offset ?unacceptable? design metric: GAO

The Army reasoned ?Sikorsky?s proposal provided something similar to a drawing of what the house looked like on the outside?. Such a picture did not provide the functional detail that the Army required showing what the space would look like on the inside,? according to the Government Accountability Office.

Harald

CitaatSikorsky [@Sikorsky] has lost its GAO protest against @BellFlight over the Army?s #FLRAA rotorcraft decision to replace the Black Hawk, the Army evaluated the Sikorsky #Defiant proposal as ?technically unacceptable,? by not providing the required level of detail.

Czech aircrew completes US Marine-led training ahead of AH-1Z Viper and UH-1Y Venom helicopters delivery    ( best snel operationeel ... eind 2024 )

Members of the U.S. Marine Light Attack Helicopter Training Squadron (HMLAT) 303 and the H-1 Light/Attack helicopters program office (PMA-276), recognized a group of airmen from the Czech Republic Air Force during a ceremony on Feb. 9 for completing maintenance and flight training on the H-1 family of the aircraft.

The Czech students have been embedded with the HMLAT-303 since July 2022, taking the same courses and hands-on training utilized by the U.S. Marine Corps' military occupational specialties (MOS) for the AH-1Z Viper and UH-1Y Venom. The syllabus is designed to provide the initial knowledge, skills, and experience required to maintain, operate, and fly the H-1 platform.

CitaatAH-1W Super Cobra upgrade programme
A major upgrade of the Bell Super Cobra known as the H-1 programme was launched in 1996. The programme called for the remanufacture of the USMC fleet of 180 AH-1W Super Cobra into AH-1Zs and 100 UH-1N to UH-1Y utility helicopters to an advanced four-bladed configuration to keep them operational beyond 2020. An upgraded cockpit configuration allows easy co-pilot access to the night targeting system (NTS). These were also remanufactured with ?zero-time? airframes comprising advanced technology.

The original two-bladed semi-rigid, teetering rotor system was replaced with a four-bladed, hingeless, bearingless rotor system. The improvement in flight characteristics provided by the four-bladed configuration led to an increase in flight envelope, maximum speed, vertical rate-of-climb, payload, and rotor vibration level.
