Dutch Navy improves radar, adds Tomahawk missile to fleet

LONDON — The Royal Netherlands Navy is upgrading its fleet to better handle existing and anticipated threats, with air defense and command frigate De Ruyter recently completing a midlife upgrade that provides the ship with a sophisticated ballistic missile defense radar.

In fall 2024, De Ruyter will travel to San Diego, California, where it will fire the very first technical test shot of the missile to a target at San Clemente Island. It will take several more years of tests and trials before the missile is ready for in-theater use.

UMS SKELDAR and Ultra Maritime unveiled their jointly developed anti-submarine warfare (ASW) solution at DSEI 2023.

The solution, a Rotary Wing UAS providing an ASW sonobuoy dispensing capability, is based on the SKELDAR V-200 Uncrewed Aircraft System (UAS) and was developed as part of a contract under the Canadian Department of National Defence's (DND) Innovation for Defence Excellence and Security (IDEaS) program.

This innovative development allows the SKELDAR V-200 to be used to deploy sonobuoys for the purpose of tracking potentially hostile submarines operating in the open ocean or close to coastal areas that could pose a threat to the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) or other forces. 

"Until now, unmanned rotorcraft in the SKELDAR V-200's weight class have been limited in their ability to identify hostile submersibles due to the lack of a sonobuoy dispensing capability," says Richard Hjelmberg, Vice President of Business Development at UMS SKELDAR.

"Only manned helicopters or larger fixed-wing unmanned aircraft with access to airfields could previously deploy sonobuoys. As a result, there has been a lack of a rapid ship-based responder that can support recognition efforts using passive sonobuoys, which is necessary for complementing ASW operations,"

Clifton Flint, Manager Global Business Development Sonobuoy Systems for Ultra Maritime, explains: "At Ultra, new technologies are being continuously assessed to find ways to counter the danger posed by hostile submarines. The gap in the available technologies led us to enter this program to create a viable alternative. This program has proven that deploying sonobuoys from Rotary Wing UAS with a compact logistical footprint is a practical and effective solution, adding another resource to the ASW toolbox for the benefit of the warfighter".

Dat begrijpen we allemaal    Ik wilde ook alleen maar aangeven dat er in 2005 al veel voor / uitzoek werk gedaan is rondom de Tomahawk. Dit gaat ook op voor de SM-3.

Ik heb het over vanaf 2017. Toen kwam er al meer geld voor Defensie. En deep strike capability stond altijd op het lijstje.

Het plan was in 2005 natuurlijk al helemaal uitgewerkt en toen was al bekend wat er aangepast moest worden aan de schepen voor de integratie van de Tomahawk. Ik ga er vanuit dat in 2017 die opnieuw bekeken is wat er nodig was voor de huidige variant(en) van de Tomahawk, dus dat het mapje uit 2005 eigenlijk afgestoft en herzien is.

Dat scheelt natuurlijk een hoop werk voor defensie omdat men niet bij punt 0 begint maar al een heel eind op weg is.

Dat verbaasd me (prettig). Ik ging er vanuit toen dit idee werd afgeschoten tijdens de grote bezuinigingen, dat er niets meer mee werd gedaan. Maar ergens is het dus wel degelijk opgepakt. Iemand heeft vooruitgekeken!

Als we een beetje snel zijn dan zijn we het 2e land ter wereld dat de tomahawk vanaf een oppervlakte schip afvuren en binnen de NAVO het 3e land dat deze capaciteit heeft op oppervlakte schepen. Uiteraard zijn ook bij onze onderzeeboten we de #3 in de wereld die de tomahawk integreren.

Correctie vanuit Marineschepen.nl, het is niet De Zeven Provinciën maar De Ruyter die in 2024 als eerste Nederlandse schip (een) tomahawk(s) gaat afvuren.

Voor eerste Nederlandse Tomahawk-lancering De Ruyter in 2024 naar Pacific
Zr.Ms. De Ruyter gaat volgend jaar als eerste Nederlandse schip een Tomahawk kruisvluchtwapen lanceren. Het Luchtverdedigings- en Commandofregat (LCF) zal daarvoor naar de Stille Oceaan afreizen. Dat bleek uit antwoorden van een marinewoordvoerder na vragen van Marineschepen.nl. RUYT zal volgend jaar niet het enige schip ver van huis zijn. Het schip dat de reis naar de Oost zal maken is Zr.Ms. Tromp.
