Portugal: verwerft de Duitse P-3C Orion voor 45 miljoen euro

Elbit Systems announced today that it was awarded a contract worth approximately $114 million with an Asian-Pacific country to supply two long-range patrol aircraft (LRPA) equipped with an advanced and comprehensive mission suite. The contract will be carried out over a period of five years.

The two LRPA aircraft will be based on new ATR 72-600 and Elbit Systems will integrate in each aircraft a mission suite that includes a Mission Management System, Electro-Optics, Radar, SIGINT, Communication and more.

The likely recipient of these long-range patrol aircraft is the Philippine Air Force, which has a long-standing program for maritime patrol aircraft. Currently, the service uses a variety of unmanned aerial systems, such as Elbit's Hermes and Insitu's ScanEagle, and modified utility aircraft to fulfill its ISR and MDA missions. It should be noted that the Elbit release does not specify any anti-submarine warfare equipment on the LRPAs, making it unclear if the new patrol aircraft will bring ASW capabilities to the Armed Forces of the Philippines. The procurement of LRPA ATR-72s also marks the first procurement made by the new Secretary of National Defense Gilbert Teodoro as the Philippines prepares to enter its last phase of military modernization this year.

Existing users of the ATR-72 for Maritime Patrol roles include the Turkish Navy and Italian Navy. Malaysia recently ordered two aircraft as well.

De Amerikaanse marine wil haar Mark 54 cruisetorpedo's uitrusten met de High Altitude Anti-Submarine Warfare (HAAWC) kit. Het systeem zal worden ontwikkeld door het Amerikaanse bedrijf Boeing om het lanceerbereik van de munitie te vergroten.

Met de HAAWC kunnen de Mark 54 torpedo's vanaf een hoogte van 10 km worden afgevuurd. Ze zullen in staat zijn om vijandelijke doelen te raken op een afstand tot 80 km. De dragers van de kruisvluchttorpedo's zullen Boeing P-8A Poseidon zijn. Dankzij deze uitrusting kunnen onderzeebootvliegtuigen de vijand aanvallen terwijl ze buiten het bereik van de vijandelijke luchtafweer blijven.

De VS zijn mogelijk niet de enige exploitant van de Mark 54 met de HAAWC-kit. Andere landen hebben interesse getoond in de ontwikkeling van Boeing. In het bijzonder de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten en landen in Azië en Oceanië.

The Spanish Council of Ministers approved the budget for the acquisition of new C295 maritime surveillance aircraft for the Spanish Air and Space Force.
According to the newspaper La Vanguardia, what the Government approved is the financial scenario that will allow the launching of the projects to renew the maritime surveillance aircrafts of the Spanish Air and Space Forces.
The news was announced by the Secretary of State for Defense, Amparo Valcarce, during her visit to the Paris Air Show 2023, and publicly celebrated by Jean-Brice Dumont, director of Airbus Defence & Space.

The Spanish Ministry of Defense plans to purchase six C-295 MPA (Maritime Patrol Aircraft), to replace the already retired P-3 ?Orion? in its maritime patrol, ISR, anti-submarine warfare and anti-surface warfare missions; as well as 10 C295 MSA (Maritime Surveillance Aircraft) to replace its veteran CN-235 in maritime surveillance, EEZ (Exclusive Economic Zone) control and search and rescue (SAR) tasks.

The operation had already been anticipated during Airbus Trade Media Briefing 22. The company and the Spanish General Directorate of Armament and Material were finalizing definitions and the purchase contract was expected to be signed during the first half of this year.

@parera, interessant stukje van marineschepen.nl. Weet je nog waar wij het laatst over hadden mbt die ASW UAV? Hij legt eigenlijk wel vrij treffend uit waarom die capaciteit niet alleen in een UAV kan.

Nederland heeft maritieme UAV's aangeschaft. Kunnen die de taken van een MPA niet overnemen? Flood: ?UAV?s kunnen een P-8 aanvullen, maar ze kunnen hem niet vervangen. Kijk maar eens naar een paar basisfeiten; de sensoren en wapens die UAV's kunnen meenemen zijn beperkt. Hoeveel sonoboeien hebben ze? Sommige hebben miniatuur sonoboeien, maar deze hebben door hun beperkte grootte niet hetzelfde bereik en dezelfde gevoeligheid. En wapens, ik ken geen enkele drone die een torpedo kan vervoeren. De P-8 kan vliegen in ijzige omstandigheden. Veel UAV's hebben geen de-icing-capaciteit en dat is natuurlijk een groot probleem in dit deel van de wereld.?

"Een UAV is traag. Vooral bij flinke tegenwind. Als je ergens een dreiging hebt en het duurt vier uur voordat de UAV er is, hoe ver kan die dreiging van de waargenomen positie zijn doorgevaren in die periode?"

Ook vanuit het oogpunt van personeelstekort levert een UAV volgens Flood weinig voordelen op. "Er is de gedachte dat onbemand echt helpt het personeelstekort op te lossen. Maar dat is niet waar, want het is niet onbemand: het is op afstand bemand. En doordat sommige van deze vliegtuigen lang in de lucht blijven, heb je nog meer bemanningen nodig. Je hebt nog steeds dezelfde regels rond rust voor de bemanning. En je hebt mensen nodig die al deze gegevens verzamelen en extra mensen die de analyse doen. Je realiseert dus eigenlijk geen personeelsbesparing."
