US Army preps mission tech for future helicopter, despite engine delay

Despite a delay in new engine technology, the U.S. Army is continuing to develop systems for its Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft that go beyond the airframe, according to the two-star general in charge of the service?s vertical lift modernization.

As part of the Improved Turbine Engine Program, a General Electric Aerospace-developed engine will replace those in the UH-60 Black Hawk and AH-64 Apache helicopters, and power the Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft. But the FARA effort is delayed since prototype flights reliant on the new engine won?t take place until the fourth quarter of fiscal 2024, according to the latest Army budget documents.

The plan was to execute a first flight for each aircraft in late 2023. That flight schedule had already been postponed by roughly a year, according to a comparison of FY22 and FY23 budget documents.

Both competitors ? Textron?s Bell and Lockheed Martin?s Sikorsky ? have said their FARA prototypes are built and just awaiting the new engine.

Hongarije De typegeschiktheidstest van de H225M helikopters is afgerond

De Hongaarse militaire typetest van de Airbus H225M middelzware transporthelikopters is voltooid. Twee van de zestien bestelde multifunctionele helikopters zullen in juli van dit jaar worden afgeleverd in het productiecentrum van Airbus Helicopters in Marignane, Frankrijk. Om de transporthelikoptercapaciteit van de Hongaarse strijdkrachten te ontwikkelen, heeft het ministerie van Nationale Defensie in het kader van het programma voor de ontwikkeling van nationale defensie en strijdkrachten in totaal zestien helikopters van dit type besteld.



Na de sluiting van het contract in december 2018 heeft de Staatsluchtvaartafdeling van het Ministerie van Defensie de benodigde vergunningen van de Hongaarse militaire autoriteit afgegeven aan de relevante organisaties van Airbus-helikopters, waaronder het opleidingscentrum van het bedrijf, waar Hongaarse militaire piloten en vluchttechnici de training die nodig is om het type te bedienen.

De Hongaarse geschiktheidstest voor het militaire type van de H225M-helikopter begon in 2021, waarbij speciale aandacht werd besteed aan de eigenaardigheden van de Hongaarse configuratie van de helikopter - omdat de helikopters specifiek zijn ontworpen en vervaardigd volgens de behoeften van het Hongaarse leger.

In verband met de procedure hebben specialisten van het ministerie in maart 2022 voor het eerst een bezoek gebracht aan de fabrikant, waar zij een deskundig overleg hebben gevoerd met de specialisten die verantwoordelijk zijn voor het ontwerp en de productie van het helikoptertype, alsmede het bedienings- en onderhoudssysteem. Aan het einde van het proces is tussen 28 februari en 1 maart 2023 een typegeschiktheidstestvlucht uitgevoerd met de helikopter met fabrikantidentificatienummer IRO 011.

De offici?le inspectiegroep ontwikkelde samen met de specialisten van de fabrikant het inspectieprogramma en de vlucht werd uitgevoerd met de hulp van de Airbus-testcockpitbemanning in het testluchtruim van de fabriek. Aan het einde van de procedure werd het Hongaarse militaire typegoedkeuringscertificaat van de H225M middelgrote multifunctionele transporthelikopter afgegeven, wat de primaire voorwaarde is voor het vliegtuigtype om het binnenlandse systeem binnen te gaan.

Czech aircrew completes US Marine-led training ahead of AH-1Z Viper and UH-1Y Venom helicopters delivery    ( best snel operationeel ... eind 2024 )

Members of the U.S. Marine Light Attack Helicopter Training Squadron (HMLAT) 303 and the H-1 Light/Attack helicopters program office (PMA-276), recognized a group of airmen from the Czech Republic Air Force during a ceremony on Feb. 9 for completing maintenance and flight training on the H-1 family of the aircraft.

The Czech students have been embedded with the HMLAT-303 since July 2022, taking the same courses and hands-on training utilized by the U.S. Marine Corps' military occupational specialties (MOS) for the AH-1Z Viper and UH-1Y Venom. The syllabus is designed to provide the initial knowledge, skills, and experience required to maintain, operate, and fly the H-1 platform.

Desnoods brengen ze wat pods aan op een aantal NH90's, maar de aanschaf van dergelijke helikopters voor het Korps lijkt me niet waar we ons geld aan moeten besteden.

Het Korps wordt wel omgevormd, traditionele "landingen" zullen voor mijn gevoel meer omgevormd worden naar snelle interventies, SOF optreden daar zal ook de ondersteuning naar aangepast moeten worden.

Ik heb dan liever dat bijv. die BVS bepantsering krijgen, die 120mm mortier compagnie z.s.m. in ere wordt hersteld en er extra ATGM's voor de infanterie eenheden worden aangeschaft.

Tja.. idd dat zijn ook goede investeringen, zo zijn er wel meer op te noemen

Alleen toon je nu de AH-1Z in plaats van de besproken oudere AH-1W 

Klopt goed gezien, de verkochte w's worden wel geupgrade. Er zijn bestaande W's geupgrade naar Z- modellen, ik weet niet 100% of dat nu ook geval is, maar de cockpit wordt wel vervangen of ook de sensoren en rotor vervangen wordt wordt niet genoemd.

Maar de laatste tijd zijn er ook Z's verkocht aan o.a. aan Bahrein, Tsjechi?, Slovakije.
De laatste Z-model is wel de beste uitvoering om aan te schaffen.   

AH-1W Super Cobra upgrade programme
A major upgrade of the Bell Super Cobra known as the H-1 programme was launched in 1996. The programme called for the remanufacture of the USMC fleet of 180 AH-1W Super Cobra into AH-1Zs and 100 UH-1N to UH-1Y utility helicopters to an advanced four-bladed configuration to keep them operational beyond 2020. An upgraded cockpit configuration allows easy co-pilot access to the night targeting system (NTS). These were also remanufactured with ?zero-time? airframes comprising advanced technology.

The original two-bladed semi-rigid, teetering rotor system was replaced with a four-bladed, hingeless, bearingless rotor system. The improvement in flight characteristics provided by the four-bladed configuration led to an increase in flight envelope, maximum speed, vertical rate-of-climb, payload, and rotor vibration level.

24 AH-1W multi-role helicopters. The estimated total cost is $350 million and includes refurbishment of a full-motion Aircraft Procedures Trainer, missile launchers, spare aircraft engines, spare parts, support, training, publications, and logistics program support.

Dat is dus ca. 14,5 miljoen USD per toestel !
