The EC725 Flies Above Poland ... ;))

Last Friday, a French Air Force Caracal helicopter arrived in Poland from the base of Cazaux, France for a two-week demonstration tour. The EC725 Caracal is a contender in Poland's multi-role helicopter bid.

The tour began with a dynamic display of the EC725 at the Radom Air Show from August 24-25. Audiences were wowed by the presence of several commandos from the French Special Forces, which accompanied the EC725's arrival.

On Monday, August 26, the EC725 turned heads in Warsaw at a media event. The helicopter's Polish tour will conclude at the MSPO Kielce defense exhibition from September 2-5, where the helicopter will be on static display presented by Eurocopter and French Air Force pilots.

Eurocopter and Poland: Meeting the Country's Multi-Role Military Helicopter Requirements and Supporting Its Industrial Supply Chain on A Global Scale

Eurocopter's participation at Poland's MSPO defense industry exhibition underscores its long-term commitment to this country, which includes the company's EC725 Caracal offer for the Ministry of National Defense's multi-role helicopter acquisition, and its intention to build on well-established partnerships with the Polish industry.

As part of the presence at MSPO – being held September 2-5 in Kielce – Eurocopter has brought for a second time the EC725 Caracal helicopter. The machine operating recently in Afghanistan, Mali or Libya belongs to the French Air Forces. The Caracal is proposed for Poland's acquisition of 70 multi-role helicopters, with Eurocopter and Turbomeca (Safran) signing industrial cooperation agreements that include the creation of full assembly lines in Poland for the Caracal and its Makila 2 turboshaft engines.

"Our Caracal is a proven and reliable choice for Poland's multi-role helicopter tender, as demonstrated by its battle-proven experience and confirmed by a growing list of customers," said Eurocopter CEO Guillaume Faury. "Eurocopter's response to the tender is fully coherent with our long-standing strategy of working with Poland's industry to further integrate its companies into the global supply chain. We are ready to build this partnership well beyond the Caracal tender, and to support the Polish defense industry's development."

During the MSPO exposition, Eurocopter is displaying the Caracal with many of the weapons systems compatible with the helicopter, including window-mounted 7.62 mm. machine guns, pod-mounted 20 mm. cannons, 68 mm. rocket launchers, anti-tank guided missiles and torpedoes.

The Caracal is the only modern, single platform and combat proven helicopter currently on the market that is capable of performing the widest range of missions – from armed operations and troop transport to naval or rescue duties. Already deployed in some of the most challenging theatres of operations today, this modern, multi-role 11-metric-ton-class helicopter carries up to 28 passengers in addition to the flight crew, and is equipped with a five- blade main rotor system, as well as the latest in avionics and systems. An impressive fuel capacity provides flight endurance of 5.5 hours. Current customers for the Caracal are France, Brazil, Mexico, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand.

Eurocopter is well placed to expand its presence in Poland while further assisting the integration of Polish companies into the global supply chain. The foundation for this strategy is based on a long-term approach of Eurocopter and its EADS parent company to cooperatively develop Poland's aviation capabilities – led by EADS' 2001 acquisition of PZL Warszawa-Okecie, the country's longest-established aviation manufacturer.

In Eurocopter's response to the Polish multi-role helicopter tender, the company joined Turbomeca in signing industrial cooperation agreements with Wojskowe Zaklady Lotnicze No. 1 (WZL-1) that include creation of the two separate full assembly lines within Poland for the Caracal helicopter and its Makila 2 engines. This brings the resources of Eurocopter and Turbomeca with WZL-1, ensuring a comprehensive in-country industrial work package that also encompasses training for locally-hired workers, along with a comprehensive maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) capability that will last far beyond the duration of the contract itself – and potentially be open to future export contracts.

Additionally, Eurocopter has demonstrated its status as a supplier of choice for Poland's helicopter operators. More than 55 Eurocopter rotorcrafts have been delivered to Polish operators – including 23 EC135s for Poland's LPR (Lotnicze Pogotowie Ratunkowe) in a modernization of the country's nationwide emergency medical services network, making it one of the most modern in Europe. On 12 August 2013 – three years and an half after the complete deliveries, LPR's EC135 fleet surpassed the number of 100,000 landings, for as many potentially lifesaving, missions serving and protecting Polish citizens. This cooperation has set the standard for a governmental operator transitioning from a Soviet-era rotorcraft type to a modern Western helicopter.

Helibras and Airbus Helicopters team test the Exocet missiles installation

A prototype of the EC725 did flight tests in France, with a specialized team, led by the engineer Pedro Paim from Helibras and Airbus Helicopters experts.

These tests evaluated the behavior of the aircraft in critical phases of flight with anti-surface missiles AM39 Block 2 Mode 2 with 700 kg installed on each side of the aircraft. The performance, quality of flight parameters, level of vibration were registered and the structural and aerodynamic loads verified.

The helicopter flew with instrumentation sensors and accelerometers installed to capture and record the results that will help engineering teams of Helibras and Airbus Helicopters in the next steps of systems integration and development on the naval version.

Poland begins evaluation tests of H225M Caracal

By Bartosz Glowacki, Warsaw | May 15, 2015

Poland has commenced performance verification tests of the Airbus Helicopters H225M Caracal as part of its effort to acquire a total of 50 new rotorcraft for all three branches of its armed forces.

Conducted at its 33rd air transport base in Powidz, the trials are the final step in the evaluation process ahead of a likely contract signing later this year, assuming the 11t-class helicopter meets the claims of its manufacturer.

Warsaw on 21 April announced that it had selected the Caracal for the multirole helicopter requirement ahead of the Sikorsky S-70i Black Hawk/S-70B Seahawk and the AgustaWestland AW149.

Airbus Helicopters provided a H225M destined for the Brazilian navy for the evaluation efforts. That was armed with twin door-mounted machine guns. The airframer displayed other possible armaments including rocket pods and the Eurotorp MU90 torpedo.

During the tests, 32 parameters covering four main areas will be verified. These include platform commonality – including component interchangeability – helicopter design, on-board equipment and performance.

Performance characteristics to be checked include speed, ceiling, endurance, operational radius and payload.

The H225M will be flown in both daylight and at night, and in visual meteorological and instrument meteorological conditions. During these missions Polish pilots with combat experience will be present in the cockpit.

Poland has assigned 28 individuals to the trials, drawn from both the military and the defence ministry.

Finalisation of the Zl13 billion ($3.5 billion) contract is anticipated in the third quarter, with deliveries commencing in 2017.

H225M Caracal passes Polish helicopter trials

Nicholas de Larrinaga, London - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly | May 27, 2015

The Airbus Helicopters H225M Caracal has passed Polish state trials, the Polish Ministry of National Defence (MoND) announced on 27 May.

The announcement paves the way for the signing of a PLN13 billion (USD3.5 billion) contract for 50 helicopters, following the preselection of the Caracal (formerly known as the EC725) for the Polish medium-lift utility helicopter programme on 21 April.

Poland will now begin final negotiations with Airbus for the helicopters. The MoND will negotiate the contractual provisions of the contract, with the Ministry of Economy negotiating the offset package attached to the programme.

Deliveries of the Caracal are scheduled to begin in 2017, with the type set to replace Poland's Mil Mi-8/17 'Hip' utility and Mi-14 'Haze' ASW helicopters.

'Mexico eyes 50 more Caracals'     ( 2 batch voor Mexico ?)

Mexico is in talks with Airbus Helicopters on buying 50 more H225M (formerly EC725) helicopters, specialized for Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) operations. Mexico already operates 11 Caracals out of 12 ordered earlier. One was reportedly shot down earlier this year in an incident related to Mexico's drug wars.

The likely deal is worth over 2 billion USD, with a contract to be signed in July in Paris. The Caracal is a money maker for Airbus Helicopters. Poland recently selected the chopper as a future airborne asset. Other Caracal clients are France, Malaysia, Indonesia and Brazil.

New Polish factory to build H225M helicopters for export

By Dominic Perry, London | June 4, 2015

More detail has emerged on Airbus Helicopters' plans to meet the offset requirements of its contract with the Polish ministry of defence for the supply of 50 H225M Caracals.

Airbus Helicopters will establish a production facility in the city of Lodz to assemble the 11t-class rotorcraft that are destined for all three branches of Warsaw's armed forces.

However, the initial 19 examples of the H225M will be manufactured at the airframer's main factory for the type in Marignane, France, says Dominique Maudet, executive vice-president global business and services.

Assuming its contract with Warsaw is finalised in the autumn, Airbus Helicopters will break ground at the new facility – to be set up in partnership with Polish firm WZL-1 – later this year, says Maudet.

As the first batch of helicopters will be French-built, the company will use the factory to produce an equivalent number of H225Ms for the export market.

"It will really become the Polish helicopter centre," says Maudet. "We will be producing Caracals for some other countries in Poland."

It will be a third production line for the H225M, behind existing sites in France and Brazil. Maudet describes it as the "fifth pillar" of Airbus Helicopters, and says in future it will also offer other design and engineering capabilities.

Airbus Helicopters is also planning to bid on a forthcoming Polish requirement for 32 attack rotorcraft, which it expects to be launched in the middle of the year. It will offer the Tiger for the contest, which would also be assembled at the Lodz site.

Engine supplier Turbomeca will also transfer some production for the Makila turboshafts that power the H225M to a new site in Sędziszów Małopolski, where sister company Hispano-Suiza already has a facility.

Kuwait seeking 24 H225M Caracal helicopters

Kuwait is lining up a purchase of 24 Airbus Helicopters H225M Caracals, with a deal to be signed "as soon as possible".

The acquisition of the 11t-class rotorcraft was discussed today during a telephone call between French president Francois Hollande and Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, according to a statement posted on the French president's official website.

The statement says the contract for the Turbomeca Makila 2A1-powered helicopters "will be signed as soon as possible" between French defence minister Jean-Yves le Drian and his Kuwaiti counterpart Sheikh Khaled Al-Jarrah Al-Sabah.

If the contract is finalised it would mark further success for the French-built rotorcraft, which recently was selected by Poland for its 50-unit requirement.

PZL-Świdnik launches legal fight over Polish helicopter deal

PZL-Świdnik has launched a legal action in an attempt to overturn the nation's recent selection of rival Airbus Helicopters for a 50-rotorcraft deal.

Poland's defence ministry in April picked the H225M Caracal ahead of the Polish AgustaWestland subsidiary's offer of the AW149 and Sikorsky's S-70i Black Hawk/S-70B Seahawk for the tri-service requirement.

It claims that the criteria used for the contest were "questionable" and is now seeking to have the award annulled without any bidder being selected.

Poland defends integrity of multi-role helicopter contest

By Dominic Perry, London | August 12, 2015

Poland's defence ministry has reacted angrily to suggestions in the national media that it broke procurement rules when it selected the Airbus Helicopters H225M for a recent 50-unit tender of multi-role rotorcraft.

It is already facing a legal challenge from one of the losing bidders – AgustaWestland subsidiary PZL Swidnik – over the way the contest was handled, and the latest allegations will only add to the outcry over its decision.

But in a lengthy statement posted on the its website, Col Mariusz Tomaszewski, the ministry's legal director, defends the acquisition process and says the report in the Wprost weekly contains "inaccurate and false information".

Wprost says that four months on from the selection of the H225M in April for the tri-service deal, the contract is no closer to being finalised – particularly around industrial offsets.

With national elections due in the autumn, it suggests that officials from both the defence and economic affairs ministries are anxious to leave any decision to the next government.

In addition, it says that the H225M Caracal failed to satisfy a number of criteria in Warsaw's tender specification, therefore rendering its selection invalid.

These include the lack of a folding tail boom, issues with the infrared target designator and the speed with which the cabin can be reconfigured.

Given these issues, Wprost questions how the Caracal could have been picked over the competing AgustaWestland AW149 and Sikorsky S-70i Black Hawk and S-70B Seahawk.

However, Tomaszewski says that the acquisition process was entirely legal and above board, and it insists that that the competing offers "did not meet the formal requirements" of the tender.

During verification trials in May the Caracal satisfied all of the 32 "critical parameters" tested, he says, and notes that Airbus Helicopters has promised to deliver the required specification – including items like the folding tail boom for the 14-15 examples destined for the Polish navy.

Negotiations with the France-headquartered manufacturer to determine the final contract value are ongoing, he says.

Previous reports suggested the acquisition was worth up to Zl13 billion ($3.5 billion), but Tomaszewski says the final figure will not be known until it concludes negotiations covering the provision of "a training package, simulator, and the construction of a logistics centre".

Airbus Helicopters will localise production of the Caracal as part of the deal, in partnership with Lodz-based WZL-1. AgustaWestland and Sikorsky both already have local manufacturing capabilities through their respective PZL Swidnik and PZL Milec subsidiaries.

First Caracals for Thailand

The Royal Thai Air Force has taken delivery of an initial four Airbus Helicopters H225 Caracal medium heavy helicopters. The choppers will serve Thailand in the (combat) search and rescue (CSAR/SAR) and troop transport role.

The order for four Caracals was signed in 2012. Two additional helos were booked in 2014 for delivery to the Royal Thai Air Force next year. Operations with the first four now delivered, are expected to begin later this month.

The EC725 is an 11-ton twin-engine helicopter featuring room for 28 persons plus high-performance navigation and mission systems. In Asia, Thailand joins Indonesia and Malaysia in operating the type.

Airbus Helicopters confident on Polish H225M contract

By Domonic Perry, London | September 3, 2015

Airbus Helicopters remains confident of signing a final contract with Poland by year-end covering the country's purchase of 50 H225M Caracals for all three branches of its armed forces.

The manufacturer was shortlisted for the deal in April and the acquisition has now been cleared by Warsaw's defence ministry. Negotiations between the manufacturer and the ministry of economy covering a proposed offset package will begin shortly, says Airbus Helicopters chief executive Guillaume Faury.

"It is the only remaining part of the contract to be finalised and we will start [the process] in the next days. We have reached an important milestone," he says.

Although the talks with the ministry are yet to begin, Faury says he expects the contract to be signed off by the end of 2015.

Airbus Helicopters has proposed a number of initiatives with Polish industry for the deal, including the establishment of a final assembly line for the H225M in the city of Lodz.

More broadly, it sees the nation as becoming a key centre for design and engineering resource, both for it and the wider Airbus Group.

"We want to rely more and more on Polish industry," says Faury.

"Airbus is the only group to have the desire and capacity to invest in Poland for the full ecosystem of an OEM." Other European companies are too small, he notes, while international firms are not interested in the same degree of industrial co-operation.

There remains, however, one further hurdle for Airbus Helicopters to clear in the form of a court case instigated by AgustaWestland's Polish subsidiary, PZL Swidnik, which had proposed the AW149 for the requirement.

It alleges multiple breaches of the tender process by Poland's defence ministry and asks for the contract – which Sikorsky also fought for – to be annulled without any winner being declared.

Faury remains unmoved by the legal threat, however, pointing out that PZL Swidnik had employed the same tactic, to little effect, in 2008 when it lost a competition – won by the-then Eurocopter – to supply emergency medical services helicopters to Poland.

"The Ministry of National Defence and Airbus Helicopters have been professional and have worked within the laws on tenders and we are confident that we will move forward with or without the claims of AgustaWestland," says Faury.

The Airbus Helicopters chief was speaking at the MSPO defence show in Kielce, where it displayed the H225M, H145M, and Tiger HAD attack helicopters.

The Tiger had, in the week before the show, performed demonstration flights for defence officials in Warsaw.

Airbus Helicopters will propose the Tiger for Poland's likely requirement to replace the Russian Helicopters Mil Mi-24s currently operated by its army.

Faury points out that as Warsaw is yet to release a tender document it is difficult to know what will be needed, but he feels that the most likely competitor will be the Boeing AH-64E Apache.

"We are very comfortable moving forward with the Tiger, that will have a number of projects that will be very convincing. More than would be requested as an offset," he says.

Bell offers AH-1Z, UH-1Y to Poland

Bell Helicopter is planning to offer its AH-1Z attack helicopter to Poland for a forthcoming requirement to replace the Mil M-24s operated by the country's land forces.

"We can provide the most cost-effective solution and state-of the-art helicopter with unmatched capability for Poland," says Joel Best, regional director, military business development at the US manufacturer.

"We are very interested in co-operation with Poland and in next few months we want to create Zulu Team with companies in the Polish defence sector," he says.

Intriguingly, Bell is also touting the UH-1Y utility variant as a back-up plan in case Warsaw's proposed tri-service order with Airbus Helicopters for 50 H225Ms falls through.

"If something happens with the Caracal deal, Bell will be happy to provide an attack and utility combination, with 85% of technical commonality and significant cost saving," adds Mike Gleason, international military business development at Bell.

Opération Barkhane: First Operational Helicopter Refueling

French air force | November 06, 2015

The French air force has carried out its first operational in-flight refueling of a helicopter when a US Marine Corps KC-130 tanker refueled a French AF Caracal in Africa. France currently lacks suitable tankers of its own. (French AF photo)

In late October, a Caracal helicopter belonging to the 1/67 "Pyrénées" squadron detached to N'Djamena (Chad) was refueled in flight by an American C-130 Hercules.

The vastness of the Sahel desert, and the long distances involved, are a major logistical challenge for the airmobile force that is continuously supporting the troops deployed on combat operations on the ground. In-flight refueling of helicopters overcomes much of this constraint.

Operated to transport supplies and maintenance personnel, Caracal now offers the airmobile component the benefit of a longer operational range. This in-flight refueling by an American C-130 opens up new possibilities in terms of planning and conducting operations.

The airmobile component of the Barkhane Force has 17 helicopters, spread over bases in Gao, N'Djamena and Madama. Over 5,000 flight hours have been logged on missions to support and assist the deployment of combat forces throughout the Sahel-Saharan strip.

http://www.c295.ca/wp-content/uploads/a400m-tanker-data-sheet.pdf

Poland threatens to cancel H225M helicopter deal

By Dominic Perry, London | 27 November 2015

Poland's newly appointed defence minister, Antoni Macierewicz, has raised fresh doubts about Warsaw's proposed acquisition of 50 Airbus Helicopters H225M rotorcraft for its armed forces.

The 11t Caracal was chosen for a tri-service requirement by the nation's previous government in April and negotiations with the manufacturer had been progressing prior to the change of administration following October elections.

However, speaking during a meeting of the parliamentary defence committee on 25 November, Macierewicz – a long-standing critic of the H225M's selection – again raised the prospect of re-opening the contest.

Airbus Helicopters had previously gained approval from Poland's defence ministry for the deal, with contract talks shifting to the ministry of economy in order to hammer out offset details.

Macierewicz says he will only approve the deal if the offset is sufficiently compelling.

He says: "The conditions of signing the contract are positive negotiations of the offset agreement. We shall see whether they'll be dealt with in a way which will enable contract signature."

Bartosz Glowacki

But he again criticised the selection of the H225M despite "shortcomings" and warned that he would re-open the contest if Airbus Helicopters did not offer enough work to Polish industry.

"That's why [the defence ministry] will be heading to put out this tender again, if the decision regarding offset means the contract won't be able to be entered into."

Companies already manufacturing helicopters in Poland, he says, produce equipment that is "on many levels, sometimes better" than the Caracal.

Airbus Helicopters and engine supplier Turbomeca had both promised to open production facilities in the country for the Caracal and its Makila 2A1 powerplants.

However, Macierewicz has consistently suggested that this would simply remove jobs from existing helicopter manufacturers in the country – Sikorsky-owned PZL Mielec and AgustaWestland subsidiary PZL Świdnik. They had unsuccessfully bid the S-70i Black Hawk/S-70B Seahawk and AW149, respectively.

Armed with two AM-39 Exocet long-range anti-ship missiles, the Airbus H225M Caracal is arguably the most powerful naval strike helicopter presently in service, and will give the Brazilian navy an unprecedented anti-ship firepower. (Airbus HC photo)

Helibras this week concluded the first phase of the integration tests of the AM39 Exocet missiles and the naval mission system developed especially for operational version of the H225M helicopter of the Brazilian navy. During the three weeks of activities in the laboratory, the team successfully completed several simulated firing of the missile.

This phase of testing was performed to validate the connection between the Naval Mission system and the missile launchers, to test different modes of operation, to verify the control logic and check the test instrumentation that will be used during the flight trials.

In early 2016, bench analysis will resume for the missiles to be flight-tested on the prototype aircraft, in Brazil. These activities are being coordinated by teams of Helibras Engineering Center and Airbus Helicopters professionals as well as MBDA, maker of the AM39 Exocet missile, Atech and Airbus Defence and Space.

"This was another stage planned in our schedule of work and shows the commitment of Helibras to the H-XBR program, as well as the increased training of its professionals and its plant in Brazil," said Richard Marelli, Helibras vice president of Operations.

The successful integration of the systems also demonstrates the maturity of the development of H225M and of the Naval Mission Systems for the Navy of Brazil, which has a completely new layout, designed in Brazil by Helibras, together with the customer, Airbus Helicopters and partner companies.

Brazilian air force (FAB) Will Receive First Operational Variant of the H-36 Caracal In 2015;
New helicopter has self-defense system and can be refueled in flight

The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) will receive the first operational variant of the H-36 Caracal helicopter before the end of 2015. The delivery date was guaranteed on Thursday (03/12) with the signing of an addendum to the helicopter purchase contract with the Airbus Helicopters / Helibras consortium. In all, the contract provides for the delivery of 50 helicopters for the three services.

The H-36 operational version will be the first helicopter in Latin America fitted with a probe for in-flight refueling. This capability is today available in Brazil only for fighter aircraft, and will increase the radius of action for missions such as rescue of people at sea.

According to Colonel Valter Borges Malta, project manager at the Coordinating Committee of the Programme of Combat Aircraft (COPAC), the basic version of the helicopter, already used by the military, has been positively assessed in operation. "It meets the requirements established by the staffs of the three forces," he said.

The president of Helibras, Eduardo Marson, stressed the Caracal's importance for the country. "The signing of this addendum is a win-win situation for us both, as we have as ultimate goal the development of our capabilities, of the in-country supply chain, and of the aviation industry as well as of the armed forces," he said. The helicopters are assembled at the company's headquarters in Itajubá (MG state).

Today, there are already 19 Caracals in service in Brazil: 7 with the Navy, five each with the Army and air force, and two with the Presidency. The remaining 31 helicopters will be delivered by 2022. Still in 2015, in addition to the first operational helicopter for the air force, another two will be delivered to the Army.

In addition to the in-flight refueling probe, the operational version for the air force comprises sensors -- such as the Radar Warning Receiver (RWR), Laser Warning System (LWS) and Missile Approach Warning System (MAWS) – which are able to detect the presence of enemy radars and missiles. Also part of the electronic countermeasures package are encrypted communications, an infrared camera and other equipment.

Poland issues fresh threats over H225M order

By Dominic Perry, London | 26 January 2016

Poland's defence ministry has issued fresh threats to cancel a tentative deal with Airbus Helicopters for the supply of 50 H225M Caracal multi-role helicopters.

Quoted in the Rzeczpospolita newspaper, deputy minister of defence Bartosz Kownacki said both parties had until 10 February to reach an agreement over industrial offsets or the deal could be cancelled.

In April 2015 Warsaw selected the H225M for the tri-service order ahead of offers from PZL Mielec and PZL Swidnik, local subsidiaries of Sikorsky and AgustaWestland, respectively.

The 11t-class Caracal subsequently passed a series of flight evaluations with the nation's armed forces and negotiations with the defence ministry were successfully concluded, leaving only talks with the ministry of economy standing in the way of an acquisition.

Bartosz Glowacki

However, a change of government in October 2015 has thrown the deal into doubt. Poland's new defence minister, Antoni Macierewicz, has repeatedly criticised the H225's selection, particularly around a perceived lack of Polish industrial contribution to the programme.

Kownacki says at the start of negotiations the offset positions of the two sides were "almost completely divergent" and little has changed since.

If the two sides cannot reach agreement, he says, Poland would look to restart the tender. However it could be left facing claims for damages as a result, admits Kownacki.

Airbus Helicopters had promised to set up local design, production and maintenance facilities for the H225M, in partnership with Polish industry, creating around 1,200 jobs. Engine supplier Turbomeca had also pledged to expand its industrial footprint in the country.

"Negotiations have resumed on offsets and we remain committed to the development of industrial capabilities across Poland, notably in the cities of Radom, Dęblin and Łódź," says the manufacturer.

Poland scraps 3 billion USD Caracal deal    ( Geen Caracal , wel Black Hawks ..? )

Poland has decided to end negotiations with Airbus Helicopters about the planned purchase of fifty H225M combat search and rescue helicopters. The deal was worth 3 billion USD. Troubles over industrial offsets are likely to have caused to decision.

The news is a blow for Airbus Helicopters, but also to the Polish military which desperately seeks replacement of ageing Russian-made Mi-8 Hip helicopters. Poland is now likely to pursue an order for Sikorsky Black Hawk, a version of which was already produced in license in Poland.

Warsaw announced the selection of H225M in April 2015 after a lengthy selection proces. Other contender were the AgustaWestland AW149 and Sikorsky's S-70 Black Hawk. The latter will likely fly in Polish military service in the future.

Airbus Helicopters drops new engine from H225 upgrade

05 FEBRUARY, 2016 BY: DOMINIC PERRY LONDON
Airbus Helicopters plans to deliver the first upgraded H225 heavy twin to launch customer Lease Corp International in early 2017, but has dropped an uprated engine from the package of enhancements and scaled back a planned weight increase.

Launched in February 2014 as the EC225e, the helicopter was due for certification in late 2015 and was intended to use a new variant of the Turbomeca Makila powerplant, the 2B.

This promised a payload boost of 550kg – bringing the H225's maximum take-off weight (MTOW) closer to that of the rival Sikorsky S-92 – and allowing a radius-of-action increase by 50nm (92km) with 19 passengers, or by 300nm with 10 passengers and an additional fuel tank.

However, faced with an oil and gas market in crisis, Airbus Helicopters late last year took the decision to ditch the new engine on cost grounds, instead relying on the current Makila 2A1.

It believes sufficient performance gains can be achieved using other elements of the enhancement package, without requiring work to integrate a new powerplant.

Turbomeca says it has now frozen development of the 2B variant, despite flight tests having begun in 2014. It featured a new combustion chamber and high-pressure turbine blades for increased take-off performance and payload capability.

As a result of the decision, MTOW on the H225 will now increase to 11,160kg (24,600lb) – a rise of just 160kg over the previous figure – still allowing the optional installation of an extra fuel tank.

That maintains the proposed radius-of-action increase with 10 passengers, although with 19 passengers Airbus Helicopters simply says it allows around 20min of additional flight time.

The airframer is still proceeding with an avionics upgrade for the type, however. A key element of that – available as an option for oil and gas operators – is its new Rig 'N' Fly system, that allows automated approaches to offshore platforms.

This has now gained certification from the European Aviation Safety Agency and will also be available on the H175 from end-2016, and the developmental H160.

Rig 'N' Fly uses a combination of sensors to enhance flight precision and situational awareness for automatic visual and instrument rig approaches.

Airbus says the system improves safety by reducing pilot workload.

Marie-Agnes Veve, head of the H225 programme, says: "With the Rig 'N' Fly, almost the entire approach procedure is automated, a key element in ensuring that our customers have the right technologies for safe, smooth and efficient flights."

French conduct first night air-to-air helicopter refuelling

Frédéric Lert, Bordeaux - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly | 25 February 2016

The French Air Force has qualified its first pilots in night-time helicopter air-to-air refuelling (AAR) missions, following a week of trials in partnership with the United States Air Force (USAF).

The trials in France involved Airbus Helicopters H225M Caracals from the Escadron d'Hélicoptères (EH) 1/67 Pyrénées and two Lockheed Martin MC-130J Hercules tankers from the USAF's 352nd Special Operations Wing.

Since the EH 1/67 began operating the Caracal (the first French helicopter with a refuelling probe) in 2006, the squadron has invested heavily in developing AAR. Two-thirds of the unit's crew are said to be fully qualified for daylight operations and the Pyrénées squadron is now moving towards a night-time operational capability. Following a week of dusk and night-time AAR training with the USAF aircraft, by 26 February the 1/67 has qualified seven pilots (including three instructors) in night-time AAR.

Currently France relies on its partners (such as the USAF or Italian Air Force) to provide tankers able to conduct air-to-air helicopter refuelling, although it has ordered two KC-130J tankers to fill this gap, which should be delivered by 2019. France's Airbus A400M Atlas transport aircraft have been purchased with an AAR capability; however turbulence issues have called into question whether the type will ever be able to refuel helicopters.

In October 2015, France conducted its first operational helicopter AAR mission, when a Caracal from 1/67 based in N'djamena was refuelled by a USAF KC-130J. This was followed in December 2015 by a Caracal, along with a crew from the DGA-Essais en vol and a pilot from the 1/67 Pyrénées, being sent to Italy to train with an Italian KC-130J in order to open the flight envelope and write down all procedures for night AAR operations with the H225M. The Pyrénées pilot acted as an instructor for his fellow pilots when the week-long training started on 22 February in Cazaux, the home base of the unit.

HELI-EXPO: Airbus Helicopters launches HForce common weapons system

By Dominic Perry, Louisville | 01 march 2016

Airbus Helicopters has unveiled a common weapons system for its range of civil-derived military helicopters, giving operators an affordable and incremental upgrade path.

In development for the last two years, the new system – dubbed HForce – will initially be available on the H225M, with a number of integration milestones already passed, says Philippe Kohn, operational marketing manager at the manufacturer.

So far ballistic weapons have been added to the 11t-class platform, including an FN Herstal 12.7mm machine gun, Nexter 20mm cannon and 70mm unguided rockets. Live test firings as part of a qualification campaign will take place later this year.

Integration of guided weapons will be complete by year-end, adds Kohn.

Key to HForce is the use of a common Rockwell Collins Deutschland mission management system across the three helicopters initially enrolled in the programme: the 2.5t H125M, the medium-class H145M, and the heavy H225M.

This will allow operators to order the helicopter in a baseline configuration without weapons, yet still retain the ability to easily upgrade them.

HELI-EXPO: Airbus slashes H225 output, anticipates military rebound

By Dominic Perry, Louisville | 01 March 2016

Airbus Helicopters is to dramatically slash output on its H225 over the next two years as it tries to deal with lower demand from the oil and gas market.

Guillaume Faury, Airbus Helicopters chief executive, says that output of the 11t-class rotorcraft, in both its civil and military guises, will fall to 20-25 units in 2016 and 2017, down from 48 in 2014 and 42 in 2015. This will mostly be "outside the oil and gas industry", he says.

Backlog now stands at around 60-70 helicopters, Faury told a Heli-Expo press conference this morning, which is "lower than we used to have" thanks to a book-to-bill ratio in 2015 - where it took just two orders for the H225 - of less than one.

This was partly driven by a number of large military campaigns, notably Poland, which were not concluded in 2015, he says.

"We were expecting the relay from oil and gas to the military last year, and think this will now be in 2016."

If the H225M succeeds in the three contests in which there are tentative agreements - for a combined 90 helicopters in India, Kuwait and Poland - "then we will have to ramp up again", he says.

Between five to seven of the handovers in 2015 will be made from its Helibras subsidiary, destined for Brazil's armed forces.

However, with Brasilia's economy in crisis and spending slashed, it's contract with the government has "been renegotiated", says Faury "at the request of the customer", slowing the pace of deliveries over the next three years.

Brazil has so far taken delivery of 21 of an eventual 50 helicopters.

Meanwhile, talks continue with Poland's ministry of economic development over Warsaw's planned 50-unit acquisition.

The negotiations are "moving forwards" says Faury, and he "continues to believe" that the contract will be finalised. "It seems there is a positive climate moving forwards," he adds.

Airbus Helicopters edges closer to Polish H225M deal

By Dominic Perry, London | 07 September, 2016

Airbus Helicopters believes it is close to finalising an order with Poland for 50 H225M rotorcraft – some 18 months after the Caracal was provisionally selected for the tri-service deal.

Warsaw initially selected the 11t type in April 2015 – ahead of rival bids from Leonardo and Sikorsky – but negotiations became bogged down following a change of government later that year.

The deal has now been cleared by the nation's defence ministry, and Airbus Helicopters is thrashing out the details of its offset package with the Polish ministry of development.

Guillaume Faury, the airframer's chief executive, describes the discussions as "long and demanding", but thinks they are close to a positive outcome.

"We are now in the final stage of these negotiations and I am of the opinion that we are coming close to a conclusion," he says.

Faury says the talks have been "challenging" and have required the manufacturer to meet "additional expectations" above the original tender.

"We have worked very hard in the last months to fulfill the vast majority of those expectations," he says.

"The negotiations for the offset contract for the purchase of the 50 Caracal multirole helicopters are very difficult," says development minister Mateusz Morawiecki.

"But negotiations like silence, so I can not disclose any details."

Bartosz Glowacki

As part of its offset agreement, Airbus Helicopters had proposed setting up a production line for Caracal in Lodz – there are already plants in France and Brazil – as well engaging local industry as part of its supply chain.

But questions emerged regarding how many of the H225Ms destined for the Polish armed forces would be built locally; Airbus Helicopters was understood to be planning to allow a certain number to be assembled for export to make up the difference.

Faury declines to be drawn on the detail of the offset package, but says that "a total of 50 [Caracals] as a minimum" will be produced in Lodz "both for Poland and for outside Poland".

Export examples could either be the military M-variant or the civil model, he says.

In addition, Polish industry will be able to maintain H225Ms, both for its armed forces and for export customers.

Despite April's fatal crash in Norway of a commercial H225 and subsequent European Aviation Safety Agency grounding of the type for civil operations, Faury says this has not impacted on the Polish negotiations. Military customers continue to fly the platform, he notes.

Meanwhile, Airbus Helicopters continues to wait for a formal tender from Warsaw for its attack helicopter requirement.

Two requests for information were previously issued – the most recent in late 2015 – as the Polish land forces seek to replace a fleet of Mil Mi-24s, but there has been nothing further.

The manufacturer is proposing its Tiger helicopter for the requirement, with the offset package likely to be similar to that offered for the H225M, says Faury.

Poland says ended talks with Airbus on helicopter deal

Business News | Tue Oct 4, 2016 | 7:31pm BST

Poland has scrapped a 13.5 billion zlotys ($3.5 billion) deal for 50 Airbus (AIR.PA) utility helicopters that were to be delivered to the Polish army, the economy ministry said late on Tuesday.

"Poland considers the negotiations regarding the offset agreement with Airbus Helicopters related to the contract for the purchase of Caracal multi-role helicopters for the Polish army as finished," the ministry said.

Poland's previous centrist government, beaten by the eurosceptic Law and Justice (PiS) party in elections last October, agreed a provisional deal with Airbus for 50 EC-725 Caracal multi-purpose helicopters.

That meant turning down offers from Sikorsky (LMT.N) in the United States and AgustaWestland SIFI.MI in Italy.

Earlier this year local media reported that Poland scrapped the deal, but Airbus said talks were continuing.

"For the Polish government the top priority is to ensure the security of the state and the conditions for the development of the Polish defence industry. Discrepancies in the negotiating positions of both sides make it impossible to reach a compromise, and therefore the continuation of talks is pointless," the ministry also said.

($1 = 3.8488 zlotys)

aankoop Airbus Caracal's geschrapt .... Polen koopt S-70 Black Hawks !!

Black Hawks for the Polish Special Forces

The Polish government wasted no time in announcing on October 10 that its preferred helicopter, the Sikorsky S-70 Black Hawk, would be procured this year, and that deliveries will begin before the end of the year.

In a joint press conference held with the Polish Prime Minister, Beata Szydlo, Polish Defense Minister Antoni Macierewicz announced that the first examples of the Black Hawk helicopters will be received by the Polish Army by the end of this year.

Coming less than a week after Poland abruptly called off talks to buy the competing Airbus Caracal, this announcement confirms what many observers believe: that the Polish government had long decided to buy the Black Hawk, and was looking for a pretext to end the Airbus talks which it has allowed to drag on inconclusively for nearly a year.

Szydlo said that the factory that produces Black Hawks, while foreign, employs several thousand Poles and pays taxes in Poland, and that buying those helicopters would be an act of "economic patriotism," Associated Press reported Oct 10. "It's important that the military have Polish equipment made by Polish workers," Szydlo said.

The helicopters will be delivered to the special operations component of the Polish Army. The rapid procurement will make it possible to ensure that the operational needs of the Polish Army are met, and also allow budget funds allocated to this fiscal year to be spent, Macierewicz said.

Obviously, these helicopters will have to be bought off-the-shelf from Sikorsky to enter service by year-end, and thus will provide no work for Polish factories. They also will provide no offsets to compensate for the expenditure, contrary to what Polish authorities had demanded from the three bidders for the helicopter tender, and also contrary to their stated reasons for pulling out of offset talks for the purchase of 50 Airbus EC725/ H225M Caracal.

It also is unclear, given that the S-70 Black Hawk had been eliminated from the previous competition as technically non-compliant, whether this purchase conforms to Polish acquisition rules and to European public tender law. "Economic patriotism," for example, is expressly forbidden by European Union regulations.

In either case, it could provide Airbus with an opportunity to mount a legal challenge to its eviction, should it so decide.

Airbus on Oct 11 reacted forcefully to Polish government statements on the Caracal acquisition. In an open letter to the Polish Prime Minister, Airbus Helicopter CEO Guillaume Faury refuted "a number of misleading allegations reported in the media," and detailed hos company's offset proposals in great detail.

Noting that on September 30th, just four days before Ministry of Development's decision to break off talks, "Airbus Helicopters accepted to extend the validity of its offer at the request of the Ministry of Defence until November 30th," Airbus said that it had even agreed to offset Poland's 23% value-added tax, something that is virtually unheard-of in international offsets.

Macierewicz assured that relevant talks pertaining to the prospective procurement are going to begin this week, while the corresponding agreement is expected to be signed by the end of the year. The deliveries are also going to begin before the end of 2016. Most probably, the Polish government is considering acquisition of no more than ten helicopters.

The special forces urgently need to establish a proper level of operational capabilities, as the Polish 7th Special Operations Squadron currently operates Mi-17 helicopters which only partially meet the stated requirements. Also, the quantity of the helicopters that are in service is too low. Minister Macierewicz made a statement referring to the Black Hawk helicopters during his visit to the PZL Mielec facility, where the joint press conference with the Prime Minister was held.

Polish Prime Minister stated that the government is willing to restore the Polish industrial capabilities and use Polish technological potential. At the same time, she stressed the fact that the steps taken jointly at PZL Mielec form a good example of collaboration with the foreign investor. The government assumes that modern armament and military hardware will be purchased from Polish factories manufacturing such products.

- Helibras presents the first H225M in naval combat version, developed for the Brazilian Navy.

- Advanced anti-surface warfare and tactical capabilities open new mission capabilities for the multirole H225M utility helicopter.

- Flight-test will pave the way for military certification in 2018.

Helibras and Airbus Helicopters have opened a new chapter in the history of the H225M multirole utility helicopter with the official presentation of the first aircraft in naval combat configuration. Developed and assembled locally by Helibras, Airbus Helicopters' subsidiary in Brazil, this new H225M version is designed to meet the demanding requirements of the Brazilian Navy, with mission capabilities including anti-surface warfare and maritime surveillance.

This evolution of the H225M is built around a Helibras-developed tactical mission system including an APS-143 surveillance radar, advanced self-protection systems as well as signals intelligence capabilities. The helicopter is also equipped with two AM39 Exocet anti-ship missiles, while the cargo bay accommodates a dedicated sensor operator console providing the mission commander with an overview of the tactical situation. An automatic identification system (AIS) will also allow crew members to gather information on surface vessels.

"I am particularly proud to present this new version", said Helibras president Richard Marelli. "This latest and unique version of the H225M is a testimony of the hard work our teams have been doing here in Brazil in close collaboration with Brazilian military customers. It also demonstrates our ability to effectively transfer technology, skills and know-how to Brazil, and our commitment to support the development of the country's aerospace industry".

The helicopter unveiled this week in Itajubá will be the first H225M in naval combat version to be delivered to the Brazilian Navy in 2018, after the end of military certification trials. It is part of a global order for 50 H225Ms for the Brazilian armed forces, 26 of which have already been delivered to the Brazilian Air Force, Navy and Army. Helibras is in charge of the complete assembly of H225Ms in Itajubá, including integration of mission equipment, flight line activities and industrial acceptance. With a target to achieve 50% of national content by 2020, Helibras has developed a local supply chain which includes more than 37 Brazilian companies.

Airbus Helicopters expects to finalise Kuwait H225M deal 'in the coming weeks'  (30 stuks a € 56,7 miljoen, levering start nog in 2018 )

Airbus Helicopters expects to shortly finalise its contract with Kuwait for 30 H225M Caracal medium-lift helicopters, the company's CEO said on 27 January.

Speaking at a press briefing, Guillaume Faury said that the deal that was agreed in August 2016 has not yet come into force, but that it should do so "in the coming weeks".

Kuwait signed a contract with Airbus Helicopters to procure the 30 H225Ms for a reported EUR1.7 billion (USD1.14 billion) following a type selection that was made in mid-2015, and includes support and services. Of these, 24 will go to the Kuwaiti Air Force and six to the Kuwait National Guard to be used for combat search-and-rescue, naval operations, medical evacuation, and military transportation.

Deliveries are scheduled to begin before the end of 2018.

Faury explained that the Kuwait deal was a highlight from a mixed year for the H225. Other successes included the sale of two additional H225Ms to Thailand (which still designates the type EC725) and the sale of an undisclosed number of H225Ms to Singapore (with Faury stating that 2016 saw 23 such H225M sales without Kuwait, it would appear that Singapore's order was for 21 such helicopters). On the downside was the fatal loss of a commercial H225 in Norway, and although not mentioned by Faury, another was the cancellation of Poland's order for 50 H225Ms in October 2016.

Away from the H225 but staying within the Super Puma family, Faury noted that the recently relaunched H215 continues to draw interest from around the world, with 2016 seeing a contract with the German police, and deliveries to Bolivia and the Finnish Border Guard. He announced also that the sale of seven H215 helicopters to an unnamed customer was secured in early 2017.

Poland invites Airbus Helicopters to bid on military helo tender, says industry exec  ( ... The story gaat verder ...)

PARIS — Airbus Helicopters has just received documents from the Polish Defence Ministry inviting the company to take part in a tender for 16 military helicopters, according to an industry executive.

"The documents arrived yesterday evening," the executive said Tuesday. The documents, which are in Polish and undergoing translation, look like a request for information to deliver eight helicopters for the Polish special forces and eight for the Polish Navy, the executive added.

The Polish Defence Ministry also invited Leonardo and Lockheed Martin to take part in the competition, business website La Tribune reported. Poland is eventually expected to order between 50-70 helicopters.

The previous Polish government had picked Airbus Helicopters for exclusive negotiations to supply 50 H225 Caracal helicopters, only to see the present administration break off those talks in October before a contract was signed. That reversal soured relations between Warsaw and Paris.
