British Challenger 2 tank hit in Ukraine

A video shared on social media and analysed by BBC Verify shows a badly-damaged British-made tank.

A Western defence source told the BBC that the British-made and supplied Challenger 2 tank in Ukraine was initially immobilised by a mine.
That mine explosion caused a fire in the rear fuel tank, at which point the Ukrainian crew of four evacuated the tank to safety.

The Western defence source said that while the empty tank was immobilised, it was then targeted by a Russian Lancet loitering drone, which destroyed it.

It is the first verified sighting of a Challenger 2 on the frontline since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.

The footage - which shows smoke pouring from the vehicle - follows claims from Ukrainian officials that its forces have breached the first Russian defensive lines in southern Ukraine.

BBC Verify has not confirmed precisely where or when the incident took place.
However, the video is consistent with other footage that shows Ukrainian forces deployed in the area around the recently retaken village of Robotyne in the south-east of the country.

How do we know it's a Challenger tank?

We've been speaking to experts and looking at reliable reference images.

While the shape of the turret is similar to other tanks, it's the gun sights which are a distinctive feature that helps identify this as a Challenger 2.

There's also the external fuel containers at the rear - the Challenger is the only one of the Western tanks with this feature.

Western defence source confirmed to our defence correspondent Jonathan Beale that it is a Challenger, telling the BBC that the four-person crew had survived.



There is some significance in that it's the first documented loss of a Challenger 2 in Ukraine," according to Sonny Butterworth, an analyst with Janes Defence.

US intelligence documents leaked in April revealed that Challenger 2 tanks were only supplied to Ukraine's elite 82nd Air Assault Brigade.

Previous videos posted on social media appear to show other types of Western-supplied vehicles used by the 82nd Air Assault Brigade, and suggested the military unit was in action on the frontlines in Ukraine's southern region of Zaporizhzhia.



The UK announced that it would send 14 Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine back in January. At the time, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the battle tank would help Kyiv's forces "push Russian troops back".

Built in the late 1990s, the Challenger is more than 20 years old, but it is one of the most modern and capable tanks at Ukraine's disposal, in addition to the German-made Leopard 2 tanks.

They are intended to provide Ukraine with better protection and more accurate firepower.

Ukrainian tank crews were trained on how to operate them in March.
The donation of Challenger 2 tanks is part of the UK's £28m support package, announced at the start of the year.

Ja hij komt met een probleem te zitten, hij moet troepen sturen die een doorbraak kunnen forceren en liefst zonder al te veel kleerscheuren, daarvoor heb je goed opgeleide, doorvoede troepen nodig en daar zit de kneep die heeft hij nodig om zijn thuis situatie op orde te houden beide gaat erg moeilijk want gaat hij veel manschappen verliezen krijg je sociale onrust die alleen te stoppen is met meer repressie thuis. Dus onrust en kans dat het hele systeem instort.

Die hebben dan cijfermatig veel minder mensen aan te leveren, maar NK kan misschien wel enkele duizenden stuks kanonnenvoer kwijt aan de Russen. Dat kan voor de Oekrainers best wel slecht uitpakken.

En waar het westen er steeds beter in slaagt om de munitie productie op gang te krijgen moet Putin noodgedwongen gaan shoppen in noord Korea naar cruciale munitie. Niet dat deze deal veel gaat opleveren voor beidde partijen. We hebben aan de Rusland - Iran deal inmiddels wel gezien dat het nauwelijks impact had dus ik kan me nauwelijks voorstellen dat dat met noord Korea wel enige impact gaat hebben

Germany ships first batch of new Gepard ammo to Ukraine

STUTTGART, Germany — Germany has delivered the first shipment of new ammunition for the Gepard anti-aircraft weapon system to Ukraine, manufacturer Rheinmetall and the German Defence Ministry announced Tuesday.

This first lot of new 35mm ammunition comes months after Rheinmetall invested in new production capacity in the German state of Lower Saxony. It also follows an announcement by Defence Minister Boris Pistorius at a February meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group that the country would begin producing the Gepard's munitions locally.

The contract with Rheinmetall was signed a few days prior for 300,000 rounds, at a total cost of €168 million (U.S. $181 million). Half of those rounds are bound for Ukraine, 40,000 of which will be delivered to Kyiv by the end of 2023, the company said.
This initial delivery includes "a five-digit number" of munitions, according to the German military.
"The war in Ukraine reminds us almost every day that air defense and sufficient ammunition are what count when defending one's own country," Pistorius said in the release. "With the resumption of production for the Gepard ammunition, we are focusing precisely on these two crucial aspects."

"We will continue to support Ukraine in the areas that are our strengths: artillery, ammunition and ground-based air defense," he added.

The self-propelled Gepard wields two 35mm guns, and Germany has provided 46 of the systems to Ukrainian troops, with another six to come. The anti-aircraft system has proved critical in helping Ukraine protect its airspace from Russian drones and other weapons. Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

But ammunition for the Gepard is tough to come by, as the German military retired the system from service about 15 years ago, and national ammo stocks had since dropped to zero.
According to a Rheinmetall news release, other nations declined to contribute from their existing stocks of ammunition, "citing either political considerations or constitutional restrictions." Rheinmetall typically produces its munitions for medium-range artillery in Switzerland. The long-neutral nation has not sent any weapons to Ukraine, but has earmarked about 1.5 billion Swiss francs ($1.7 billion) for humanitarian and development aid to Kyiv over the next five years.

Local reports indicate the Swiss government is considering whether to allow third-party operators of locally made weapons to send them to Ukraine, under stringent export guidelines.

As a result, Rheinmetall modified existing 35mm ammunition from the main armament of an infantry fighting vehicle for use in the Gepard, then ensured the Gepard fire control unit could reliably recognize the ammunition.

Rheinmetall performed multiple tests at the company's proving ground at Unterlüss in Lower Saxony, and successfully fired the ammo by a Gepard in May.

The company is providing two types of ammunition to Ukraine as part of the aforementioned commitment, including a subcaliber APDS-T munition containing heavy metal penetrators, intended for engaging hardened targets. The second type is a conventional high-explosive incendiary designed for air defense and for attacking aircraft and guided missiles.

Russische gouverneur: leger trok zich tactisch terug uit Robotyne
 
Rusland heeft zich om tactische redenen teruggetrokken uit het dorp Robotyne, zegt de door Moskou aangestelde gouverneur in de regio Zaporizja. Oekraïne zei ruim een week geleden de plaats heroverd te hebben, maar Rusland gaf dat vooralsnog niet toe. Jevgeni Balitski deed dat indirect wel in een interview met de televisiezender RBC.

'Het Russische leger heeft deze nederzetting verlaten, tactisch verlaten, omdat het in algemene zin onlogisch is om op een kale oppervlakte te blijven als er geen enkele manier is om je volledig te verschansen', zei Balitski. Daarom zou het leger zich teruggetrokken hebben richting de heuvels.

Oekraïne meldde de herovering van Robotyne als een belangrijke stap in het tegenoffensief. Het Russische ministerie van Defensie meldde dinsdag nog dat bij het dorp twee Oekraïense aanvallen waren afgeweerd.
