Poland reiterates support for 20-billion-euro Ukraine military aid fund

Poland supports a proposal for EU member states to create a fund to provide Ukraine with 20 billion euros ($21.5 billion) in military aid in the next four years, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski told reporters in Brussels on Feb. 3.

EU foreign ministers are still discussing establishing a dedicated fund for Ukraine within the European Peace Facility, used to reimburse member states' expenses on military aid to other countries.

The plan, suggested by the EU's top diplomat Josep Borrell in July last year, has met resistance from some member states wary of committing large sums years in advance. The EU is reportedly considering various ways to reform the fund to achieve unilateral approval

"There was an agreement on the civilian side, 50 billion euros - very good news. But we still have to decide how to implement our military support, both bilaterally and through the European Peace Facility," Borrell said ahead of an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers on Feb. 3.

After months of delay, all 27 leaders of EU member states agreed on Feb. 1 to allocate an additional 50 billion euros ($54 billion) in financial support package for Ukraine within the EU budget.

According to Borrell, the EU has provided Ukraine with 28 billion euros ($30.2 billion) in defense aid to help the country repel Russia's full-scale invasion.

Ukraine's 'Huge And Loud' Challenger 2 Tanks Hide In Treelines, Lob Shells At Russian Fortifications Two Miles Away


If you're wondering why there's scant evidence of Ukraine's British-made Challenger 2 tanks doing any actual fighting in Russia's 23-month wider war on Ukraine, a recent interview with one Challenger 2 crew might provide some answers.

The tankers said they fight their 71-ton, four-person tank from Ukrainian-controlled treelines, firing at Russian-controlled treelines up to 1.8 miles away while drones correct their shots. Apparently often at night.

The targets: the Russians' "full-concrete, dug-in positions." But "no vehicles yet," one tanker added.

Firing high-explosive rounds from their 120-millimeter guns, the Challengers 2s—14 of which belong to the Ukrainian air-assault forces' 82nd Brigade—support the infantry.

That's a reversal of tank-first doctrine, where the infantry support the tanks. In that sense, the Challenger 2s are functioning more as mobile guns than as tanks proper. Few if any fast-moving assaults.

The crew in the interview explained why. "Cross-country mobility is difficult," one tanker said. "For our ground" the 71-ton British tank "is heavy."

"Our ground" is southern Ukraine's agricultural Zaporizhzhia Oblast, where the 82nd Brigade joined Ukraine's 2023 counteroffensive late last summer, in time to reinforce Ukrainian gains in and around Robotyne, 10 miles south of the previous front line.

One Challenger 2 got hit by a Russian anti-tank missile while repositioning around Robotyne in broad daylight in late August or early September. After the crew bailed out, the charges for the tank's main gun ammunition apparently cooked off—despite being stored in a water-filled container—and the resulting explosion destroyed the tank.

That has been the only verifiable loss of a Challenger 2 in Ukrainian service. The others apparently still are in the fight, supporting Ukrainian infantry trying to expand their perimeter around Robotyne and defending the town against Russian counterattacks.

Firing from treeline fighting positions at Russian fortifications nearly two miles away isn't always as boring as it might sound. Russian missiles, drones and artillery are constant threats.

But the 82nd Brigade's tankers said they're getting numb if not complacent. "The first mission is always the scariest," one tanker said. "And then ... humans get used to anything."

It's not clear the Russians on the receiving end of the Challenger 2's violence feel the same way. The British tank is the heaviest tank in the Russia-Ukraine war. It's imposing even when it's attacking from a distance.

Even ter verduidelijking, de 50 miljard aan steun vanuit de EU betreft GEEN militaire steun maar financiële steun om het land overeind te houden. Over militaire steun vanuit de EU moet nog gesproken worden. Oekraïne haar krijgsmacht komt echter niet met lege handen te staan. Er is inmiddels al voor zo'n 21 miljard aan militaire steun toegezegd in 2024.

Oekraïne zegt dat het opnieuw Russisch oorlogsschip tot zinken gebracht heeft op de Krim

De Oekraïense militaire inlichtingendienst (GUR) zegt dat het opnieuw een Russisch oorlogsschip tot zinken gebracht heeft op de door Rusland bezette Krim. Russische oorlogsbloggers bevestigen dat de Ivanovets volledig gezonken is.

De aanval is volgens de GUR afgelopen nacht uitgevoerd. Op beelden die de inlichtingendienst vrijgegeven heeft, is te zien hoe een drone op het schip afkoerst en het vervolgens doet ontploffen.

De Ivanovets behoort tot de Russische Zwarte Zeevloot. Het schip was volgens de GUR bezig met het uitvoeren van een operatie op het Donoezlav-meer op de Krim. Het zonk nadat het "een aantal voltreffers op de romp" moest incasseren. Het schip zou daarbij zo veel schade opgelopen hebben dat het zonk.



Het zou gaan om een schip met een waarde van 60 tot 70 miljoen dollar (55 tot 65 miljoen euro), volgens de GUR. Het was uitgerust om supersonische anti-scheepsraketten af te vuren en kon tot 40 bemanningsleden aan boord nemen.

Russische oorlogsbloggers zeggen dat de bemanning zich tot op het laatst bleef verdedigen, maar dat ze de aanval niet kon afslaan. "Na een ontploffing zonk het schip volledig", klinkt het.
