Germany approves three more Poseidon MMAs

17 NOVEMBER 2023

by Gareth Jennings

Germany is increasing its buy of Boeing P-8A Poseidon maritime multimission aircraft (MMA), with a further three aircraft approved by the country's government.

Kommandeur Marineflieger, Sea Captain Broder Nielsen, confirmed the additional purchase on 17 November, saying, "The budget committee of the Bundestag has approved the procurement of three more P-8A Poseidons. A good and important decision for the operational capability of German naval aviation."

News of the approval came some 17 months after Capt Nielsen's predecessor, Capt Thorsten Bobzin, confirmed in June 2022 the plan to increase the Marineflieger's Poseidon buy from five aircraft as part of a wider increase in the national defence budget, specifically the EUR100 billion (USD109 billion) Söndervermögen (special fund) uplift following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

While this increase will take the Marineflieger's Poseidon fleet to eight airframes, German national media had previously said that as many as seven more aircraft might be added for a final fleet of 12, though this now seems unlikely given wider budgetary pressures.

The first five Poseidon aircraft will be delivered to Germany by the end of October 2024.

With the greatest maximum take-off weight of any dedicated MPA on the market (85,139 kg), the P-8A is equipped with the Raytheon AN/APY-10 maritime surveillance radar and L-3 Wescam MX-20HD digital electro-optic/infrared sensors primarily. It has the capacity for 126 sonobuoys and can carry the full panoply of anti-submarine and anti-surface weaponry in its internal weapons bay as well as on underwing hardpoints. In the main cabin, there is provision for seven mission crew members at six workstations, although there is plenty of room and the necessary power and cooling for expansion.

On 9 October 2023, the first of five Força Aerea Portuguesa (FAP, Portuguese Air Force) P-3C Orion Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) arrived at Halifax (Canada) for a modification and upgrade programme.

The aircraft, serial 14808 and adorned with Esquadra 601 (Esq601) Lobos (Wolves) special markings will be modernised by General Dynamics Mission Systems–Canada (GDMSC) and IMP Aerospace & Defense. The companies will replace the Link 16 communication system, the transponder (electronic communication device), and install a new mission system, with the capacity for further evolution.

The aircraft is expected to return to Portugal by the end of Q1-2024 to complete the last phase of modification work at Base Aérea (BA) 11 Beja and carry out final acceptance tests. The remaining four Orions are expected to be upgraded in the period until 2025.

With regards to the six former Marineflieger (GN, German Navy) P-3C Orions, The P-3 Orion Research Group The Netherlands report that Portugal confirmed that the aircraft have been bought to keep their five Orions airworthy, so most likely they will be dismantled for spare parts. Scramble Magazine first reported on this sale on 5 September 2023.

The six German Navy Orions involved are: 60+03, 60+04, 60+05, 60+06, 60+07 and 60+08. The first P-8A Poseidon will be delivered to Germany in October 2024, the final operational flight of a German P-3C will take place during 2025.

Kawasaki prepares P-1 replacement project

05 SEPTEMBER 2023

by Akhil Kadidal

Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) has instituted a project team to develop a 'future fixed-wing patrol aircraft' to replace its P-1 maritime patrol aircraft. The aircraft is currently operational with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF).

A company spokesperson told Janes that the project team for the 'future fixed-wing aircraft' was instituted in April 2023 with "expectation of the deployment by the Japan Ministry of Defense (MoD)/JMSDF in the 2040s".

The specifications of the new aircraft are under consideration. According to KHI, the company is waiting for the "concept of future fixed-wing aircraft operations" to be issued by the MoD. A Japan MoD spokesperson confirmed to Janes that the plan for the future aircraft is still under consideration.

The P-1 is a major component of the JMSDF's maritime airborne patrol, anti-ship, and anti-submarine warfare capabilities. According to Janes data, the P-1 is equipped with an Advanced Combat Direction System, designated by Toshiba as the HYQ-3. It also has the Toshiba HPS-106 surface search X-band active electronically scanned array (AESA) and is slated to be equipped with a CAE-built Magnetic Anomaly Detector-Extended Role (MAD-XR). The P-1 can also be equipped with a range of air-launched weaponry, including anti-ship missiles, air-to-ground missiles, torpedoes, depth charges, and mines. It is also equipped with a fly-by-light system.

The 'future fixed-wing patrol aircraft' is expected to have vastly improved systems over the P-1. The MoD said it cannot disclose details about these capabilities. "That said, in general, further long-range missiles and enhanced artificial intelligence (AI) are some technologies and capabilities that are being considered," the MoD spokesperson added.

Portugal: verwerft de Duitse P-3C Orion voor 45 miljoen euro

(vertaling via google translate)

Elbit To Supply Two Patrol Aircraft To Asia Pacific Country

Elbit Systems was awarded a $114 million contract with an Asian-Pacific country for two Long-Range Patrol Aircraft (LRPA)

ATR 72-600 LRPA are likely for the Philippines

Elbit Systems press release

Elbit Systems announced today that it was awarded a contract worth approximately $114 million with an Asian-Pacific country to supply two long-range patrol aircraft (LRPA) equipped with an advanced and comprehensive mission suite. The contract will be carried out over a period of five years.

The two LRPA aircraft will be based on new ATR 72-600 and Elbit Systems will integrate in each aircraft a mission suite that includes a Mission Management System, Electro-Optics, Radar, SIGINT, Communication and more.

Yoram Shmuely, General Manager of Elbit Systems Aerospace: "Elbit Systems has been supplying Special Mission Aircraft to various countries worldwide for over a decade for defense or governmental operational requirements. This contract extends the range of platforms and solutions we offer our customers, leveraging vast operational experience and in-house technologies and capabilities. We are proud to provide advanced solutions to our customers."

-End-

Naval News comments by Aaron-Matthew Lariosa:

The likely recipient of these long-range patrol aircraft is the Philippine Air Force, which has a long-standing program for maritime patrol aircraft. Currently, the service uses a variety of unmanned aerial systems, such as Elbit's Hermes and Insitu's ScanEagle, and modified utility aircraft to fulfill its ISR and MDA missions. It should be noted that the Elbit release does not specify any anti-submarine warfare equipment on the LRPAs, making it unclear if the new patrol aircraft will bring ASW capabilities to the Armed Forces of the Philippines. The procurement of LRPA ATR-72s also marks the first procurement made by the new Secretary of National Defense Gilbert Teodoro as the Philippines prepares to enter its last phase of military modernization this year.

Existing users of the ATR-72 for Maritime Patrol roles include the Turkish Navy and Italian Navy. Malaysia recently ordered two aircraft as well.

CitaatThe Spanish Council of Ministers approved the budget for the acquisition of new C295 maritime surveillance aircraft for the Spanish Air and Space Force.
According to the newspaper La Vanguardia, what the Government approved is the financial scenario that will allow the launching of the projects to renew the maritime surveillance aircrafts of the Spanish Air and Space Forces.
The news was announced by the Secretary of State for Defense, Amparo Valcarce, during her visit to the Paris Air Show 2023, and publicly celebrated by Jean-Brice Dumont, director of Airbus Defence & Space.

The Spanish Ministry of Defense plans to purchase six C-295 MPA (Maritime Patrol Aircraft), to replace the already retired P-3 ?Orion? in its maritime patrol, ISR, anti-submarine warfare and anti-surface warfare missions; as well as 10 C295 MSA (Maritime Surveillance Aircraft) to replace its veteran CN-235 in maritime surveillance, EEZ (Exclusive Economic Zone) control and search and rescue (SAR) tasks.

The operation had already been anticipated during Airbus Trade Media Briefing 22. The company and the Spanish General Directorate of Armament and Material were finalizing definitions and the purchase contract was expected to be signed during the first half of this year.
