Saab has revealed ongoing discussion in expanding collaboration among Scandinavian nations, highlighting the aspiration for Sweden, Finland and Denmark to share common GlobalEye AEW&C platforms.

Finland, Sweden and Denmark have been engaging in discussions with Saab to potentially jointly operate the company's GlobalEye Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft, a Saab official told Shephard at the Dubai Airshow 2023.

Sweden has ordered two GlobalEyes under a US$710 million deal. Deliveries have been slated for 2027 and the contract included a potential extension for two more aircraft.

'It comes down to the Swedish Defence Force to make that choice [about the extension], but we are having discussions with the neighbouring countries in Scandinavian – Finland and Denmark –, to see whether scaling up from two or more aircraft in the region could be part of the equation in the region,' said Tomas Lundin, head of marketing and sales of AEW&C business at Saab.

When asked whether the countries involved could jointly use the same platforms, Lundin commented 'Why not? That's a good idea'. He emphasised, however, that the collaboration between the Scandinavian neighbours was only 'aspirational' at this point.

Although Scandinavian countries have been known for their close collaboration on dispersed air operations conducted with fighter jets, the concept of multiple nations owning a shared defence platform does not seem to have a clear precedent.

Lundin could not confirm when a decision could be expected regarding the potential collaboration, but he said Saab believed GlobalEye would 'be an important asset' for countries in the region and 'they are showing a great deal of interest in the capability'.

NATO has selected the Boeing E-7A Wedgetail to replace its Boeing E-3A Sentry Airborne Warning And Control System (AWACS) aircraft.

The alliance announced the selection on 15 November, saying the approval was granted in the same month. Six aircraft will be acquired to begin operations from 2031.

The six Wedgetails will replace the 14 Sentries operated by the NATO E-3A Component out of Geilenkirchen in Germany, and which comprises Belgium, Canada, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Turkey, and the United States.

This component is part of NATO's wider Airborne Early Warning and Control (NAEW&C) Force that also includes the UK and its soon-to-be received three Wedgetail aircraft. Four E-7As are also operated by Turkey as the Peace Eagle (separate to the country's contribution to the E-7A Component), while the US is to field up to 26 aircraft as it looks to replace its own ageing E-3Gs. Although not a NATO member, Australia has deployed one of its six Wedgetails to Europe to assist with the alliance's efforts regarding Ukraine.

The E-3A is hosted on the four-engined 707 airframe. It is built around a rotating Northrop Grumman AN/APY-2 radome that has a coverage area of more than 500,000 km 2 of airspace, to look down and detect, identify, and track low-flying aircraft over land or water. A typical mission is flown with 21 personnel on board.

Leonardo to upgrade NATO AWACS aircraft

24 MAY 2021

by Gareth Jennings

Leonardo is to upgrade a first Boeing E-3A Airborne Warning And Control System (AWACS) aircraft test aircraft as part of NATO's wider Final Lifetime Extension Programme (FLEP).

Leonardo is to upgrade one of NATO's 14 E-3 AWACS aircraft as a test for a wider modernisation of the fleet under the Final Lifetime Extension Programme. (NATO)

The Italian company announced on 21 May that it has been contracted by Boeing, as prime contractor for the NATO Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) Programme Management, Agency to upgrade the first NATO E-3A test aircraft.

"The activity, to be completed within 2023, includes the installation and checkout of newly-developed hardware under the FLEP programme [and will be] accomplished by Leonardo's [...] personnel of the Venice-Tessera plant in Italy," the company said. "Leonardo will then provide support during the final test phase at the Geilenkirchen NATO Air Base [in Germany]."

Leonardo did not specify the nature of the hardware to be fitted to the test aircraft, nor when the upgrade is planned to be rolled out to the remaining 13 aircraft of the NATO E-3A Component.

With an original line up of 18 Boeing E-3A AWACS aircraft (now reduced to 14), the E-3A Component is directly supported by Belgium, Canada, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Turkey, and the United States.

NATO sees resilience as key issue in AWACS replacement

By Andrea Shalal

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Resilience, innovation and advances in technology will be key factors as NATO maps out a multibillion-dollar effort to replace its aging fleet of 17 Boeing Co E-3 Sentry Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft, a top NATO official told Reuters.

French General Jean-Paul Palomeros, Supreme Allied Commander Transformation, said NATO was starting to map out its requirements for the next-generation of weapons to detect air and surface threats, which will be needed between 2030 and 2035.

Growing threats and greater ability to share information pointed to a so-called "system of systems" approach, rather than a straight one-for-one replacement of a few, highly visible aircraft that would be vulnerable to attack.

"This a very crucial project for NATO for the next two decades," Palomeros told Reuters last week at a conference in Washington hosted by the Center for a New American Security.

Rapid weapons development by Russia and other potential foes meant the next-generation weapons system would have to be more resilient to attacks, Palomeros said. Officials were also looking potential other uses for the aircraft, and whether intelligence analysts would be stationed on board, he said.

Boeing, Europe's Airbus, and other big weapons makers are keeping a close eye on NATO's emerging plans to buy new early-warning capabilities, one of the few larger acquisition programs in sight.

Palomeros said the program would be a test case for many NATO priorities, including a push for more innovation, expanded partnerships among members, and a drive to better balance spending among NATO members.

"The replacement for AWACS is a perfect project for trans-Atlantic cooperation. It opens a lot of doors," he said, adding officials had begun early conceptual work to shape the requirements for the new program.

France, Britain, the United States and other countries have their own early-warning systems, which could translate into more demand for the new weapons system in the future.

He said it would be crucial for NATO to carefully define what was expected from the new system, or it could result in a "very complex, unaffordable system" that would carry risk in development, production and even operations.

Palomeros acknowledged problems with some past multinational weapons development programs, like the Airbus A400M military transport plane.

But he said the success of the NATO Air Command and Control System, developed by a joint venture of France's Thales and U.S. weapons maker Raytheon Co, had proven that cooperative development programs could work.
