 https://navyrecognition.com/index.php/news/naval-exhibitions/2017-archives/imdex-asia-2017-show-daily-news/5257-imdex-asia-2017-st-marine-unveiled-the-endurance-170-lhd.html

CitaatEndurance 170 Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) has a length of 170 meters, a breadth of 30.80 meters, a draft of 6.60 meters for a full load displacement of 19,000 tons.

Luftwaffe yet to decide on final Tornado replacement numbers

02 May 2024

The German Luftwaffe has not yet determined how many new combat aircraft it is to acquire to replace its fleet of Panavia Tornados, a senior service official told Janes on 2 May.

Responding to a request for clarification and confirmation of the 85 new aircraft figure previously given by industry officials, Commanding General of Air Force Forces Command, Lieutenant General Günter Katz, said the Luftwaffe had never formally declared a one-for-one replacement of the Tornado, and that "a new target number does actually not exist".

The Luftwaffe currently fields 90 Tornado Interdiction Strike (IDS)/Electronic Combat Reconnaissance (ECR) aircraft that are to be retired in 2030. A revised request for proposals (RFP) was issued in 2019 to source one or more types to fulfil these roles. While industry officials briefed at the time that the requirement would cover 85 new aircraft, Lt Gen Katz said that the requirement is for "a number closer to the present Tornado fleet strength".

The service has already contracted 35 Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II and 15 retrofitted Eurofighter Elektronischer Kampf (EK) electronic attack (EA) aircraft to take on elements of the IDS and ECR roles respectively. However, while the F-35As will be additional airframes, the Eurofighter EKs will be existing airframes retrofitted with EA equipment.

More SM-3 Interceptors Needed After Downing Iranian Ballistic Missiles: Navy Secretary

After SM-3 successfully engaged Iranian ballistic missiles, the Navy Secretary says more are needed than the dozen per year currently planned.

After seeing how well Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) anti-ballistic missile interceptors performed last month against Israel-bound Iranian ballistic missiles the Navy Secretary says he now wants more. Carlos Del Toro's testimony at Wednesday's Congressional budget hearing comes as the Pentagon's Missle Defense Agency (MDA) wants to end procurement of SM-3 Block IB variants by the end of this year and limit its buy of the follow-on Block IIAs to 12 per year through Fiscal Year 2029.

"I truly believe that the SM-3s will be needed in greater numbers in the future, given the operations that took place in defense of Israel," Del Toro testified during a House Armed Services subcommittee hearing. "Recently, some were fired. And very effectively. So I think given the future threat and our deterrence mission of the Indo-Pacific, we are going to need more SM-3s in the future."

Secretive Long Range Attack Missile For Marine AH-1s Is Now Being Flight Tested

The Long Range Attack Missile, based on an unknown Air Force weapon, will help ensure Marine AH-1Zs stay relevant in future high-end fights.

The U.S. Marine Corps is transforming an unspecified U.S. Air Force missile into a weapon that will give its AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters the ability to strike moving targets on land and at sea 150 nautical miles away. This is exponentially further than the Vipers can reach with their existing air-to-surface munition options. The service has started flight testing this weapon, dubbed the Long Range Attack Missile (LRAM), and plans to conduct the first live-fire launch in Fiscal Year 2025.

Marine Col. Eric Ropella, head of Naval Air Systems Command's (NAVAIR) Expeditionary and Maritime Aviation-Advanced Development Team (XMA-ADT), shared new details about the secretive LRAM effort with The War Zone and other attendees at the annual Modern Day Marine exposition earlier today. The Marine Corps resides within the Department of the Navy and NAVAIR serves as the central manager for aviation and other related programs both services.

"So take everything that you know about an AH-1 and [the] ordnance that it can throw off of it, and exceed that range by a lot, and you will get LRAM," Ropella said by way of introduction.

"So, we're excited about that... we've flown with it, you know, attached to an [A]H-1 and the live fire testing will happen in [the] next fiscal year," he continued. "So, super excited to do that. I know a lot of H-1 test pilots that are fighting to be the one that gets to pull the trigger on that first test."

Specific details about the LRAM's capabilities are limited, but the Marine Crops has said in the past that it will have a maximum range of at least 150 nautical miles (just over 170 miles or nearly 278 kilometers) and will be capable of engaging moving land and sea targets. The air-to-ground missiles currently available to Marine AH-1Zs are the AGM-114 Hellfire and AGM-179 Joint Air-to-Ground Missile (JAGM), which have stated maximum ranges of just over 6 and 4 nautical miles (seven and five miles or just over 11 and 8 kilometers), respectively. JAGM manufacturer Lockheed Martin has been developing an extended-range version of that missile that has roughly twice the range of the baseline design, or around eight nautical miles (10 miles or 16 kilometers).

Marine AH-1Zs can also fire AIM-9M Sidewinder air-to-air missiles and they are set to get much more capable AIM-9Xs in the future. The AIM-9X has a roughly 17-nautical-mile (20 miles or just over 32 kilometers) stated maximum range — although most practical engagements would be significantly shorter than that — which still doesn't come close to what the Marines are looking at with LRAM.

CitaatIt will be very interesting if Redback IFV with a K21 turret and a 40mm Bofors gun wins a contract for 246 Infantry Fighting Vehicles for Romania.
The Koreans offer local production/assembly if a contract is signed.
Romania has a lot to offer, mainly the cheapest production costs in Europe at the moment.

Italy's First PPA With AAW Capabilities Deploys To The Indo-Pacific (persoonlijk vind ik dit niet 1 van de mooiste scheepsontwerpen om te zien  ;) )

The Raimondo Montecuccoli (P 432), the third Thaon di Revel class PPA (Pattugliatore Polivalente d'Altura) and the first with anti-air warfare (AAW) capabilities (PPA Light Plus) has left the La Spezia naval base on 29 April for an operational 'projection' campaign in the Indo-Pacific and around the globe lasting six months.

Nogmaals mensen omdat wij niks horen wil niet zeggen dat er niks gebeurt. En het wachten op een nieuwe regering helpt ook niet mee.
