Another ‘First’ for SAMP/T System

(Source: Direction Generale de l’Armement; issued March 7, 2013)
(Issued in French only; unofficial translation by defense-aerospace.com)

The Italian army and the French air force on March 6 intercepted a target representative of a theater ballistic missile thanks to their common SAMP/T medium range air defense system. This is the first time such an interception occurs within a systems architecture involving NATO.

Launched by an aircraft, the target followed a ballistic trajectory for about 300 km before being destroyed by an Aster 30 missile interceptor.

This firing, part of the system’s technical and operational evaluation, was conducted at the DGA missile test center at Biscarrosse (south-western France) jointly by the Italian army’s 4th Artillery Regiment, stationed in Mantua (Italy) and the French air force’s Centre d’Expériences Aériennes Militaires (CEAM) at Mont-de-Marsan. It also involved the support of several important DGA centers as well as NATO.

This successful firing is a further step taken in the demonstration of the SAMP/T weapon system’s capacity to counter missile threats to NATO forces deployed in-theater. It follows two earlier firings, carried out in October 2010 and November 2011, against the same type of threat.

The advantages of SAMP/T, called MAMBA by the French Air Force, include area defense with 360-degree coverage; the missile’s agility, system modularity and the ability to simultaneously process and engage all types of modern air threats.

In service in Italy and France, the SAMP/T system is the cornerstone of these two countries’ contribution to NATO program intended to protect deployed forces against the threat posed by theater ballistic missiles.
