De eerste FN SCAR-L's zijn aangekomen bij 2 Cdo in Camp Lagland. Deze wapens zullen de FNC vervangen in de gevechtseenheden. Ze worden elk uitgerust met een Laser Target Pointer en een richtmiddel (Aimpoint voor sectieleden, ACOG voor teamleiders). Bijkomend wordt elk lid van de gevechtseenheden uitgerust met een nachtkijker met montage op de helm.

Ziet er heel net uit. Wanneer staat ons vervangingsprogramma van de Diemaco eigenlijk op de rol? Staat dat uberhaupt al op de rol? Nou ja, kunnen onze zuiderburen alvast ervaring op doen en er evt. verbeteringen in het ontwerp worden aangebracht mochten wij op dit vuurwapen overstappen t.z.t..

De Diemaco Colt Canada zijn volledig gemoderniseerd inderdaad dus dat duurt nog wel even. Speciale eenheden zijn over op de HK416

In bovenstaand scenario zou ik dan serieus kijken naar de F18E.

Hhmmmm, "best"...
- Is dat dan op papier?
- Of wat het toestel in (een mogeljk verre) toekomst zal kunnen?
- Of gebaseerd op een snapshot van wat de huidige (test-)kisten al dan niet kunnen?

Want de updates en posts in diverse threads indachtig lijkt het me dat de F-35 nog járen niet operationeel gaat zijn.
Zou je mss zelfs nog een "interimoplossing" moeten gaan zoeken of het aantal vlieguren van de huidige toestellen beperken.
Dat is iets wat iedereen ongetwijfeld wil vermijden.

The Belgian government's planned purchase of 34 fighter-bombers of a model still to be selected among five US and European candidate, will cost an estimated 15 billion euros (initial purchase and operation over forty years) and will enable Belgium to defend its airspace and to deploy at least six aircraft on operations abroad, the officer in charge of the program, Colonel Harry Van Pee, said Wednesday.

The entire Life Cycle Cost (LCC) over an estimated service life of about forty years is about triple the purchase price, he said at a hearing before the defense committee of the House.

"Strategic plan"
The government, in approving the "Strategic Plan 2016-2030" presented on December 22 by the Minister of Defence, Steven Vandeput (N-VA), earmarked an amount of 3.573 billion euros for the purchase of 34 new aircraft, intended to replace the aging F-16 from 2023. But this is only an "estimate," the officer said.

By adding all costs (acquisition, use of both types of aircraft during the transition period, spare parts and documentation, personnel training and even changes and developments term), one would arrive at more than tripled costs over the lifetime, an amount of about 14.967 billion euros, added Colonel Van Pee.

This is about 470 million euros a year, or 15% of the current defense budget (which is expected to grow from 2019), according to the officer.

But expenditure during the transition period, when both types of aircraft will be in operation, and the start of payments in 2020-2021 for deliveries scheduled between 2023 and 2030, should be higher, he acknowledged in response to questions from committee members, including George Dallemagne (cdH), who referred to a new "contract of the century" in reference to the purchase of F-16 in 1975.

Difficult Calculations
Colonel Van Pee, who heads the Defence Staff's Programme Office which drives the choice by the government (in principle by mid-2018) of a successor to the F-16, however stressed how difficult it was to calculate costs over a long period due to factors such as exchange rates fluctuations – most aircraft prices are calculated in dollars - and inflation.

Easier Maintenance
However, he predicted that future aircraft will allow greater use of simulation to complete costly flight hour requirements, while their maintenance should be easier than the current F-16.

Ambition
The figure of 34 fighters set by the government is determined by the "level of ambition" set for the Air Force, which must be able to have two aircraft permanently available for "air policing" missions over Belgian, Luxembourg - and soon Dutch – airspace, to deploy two "perhaps more temporarily" on overseas operations, while ensuring daily training of its pilots.

Colonel Van Pee said that no choice has yet been made between the five candidates: the Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II; the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet; the Dassault Rafale F3R; the Saab JAS-39E/F Gripen; and the Eurofighter, from eponymous consortium. Each aircraft is offered by a government agency because Belgium wishes to conclude a government to government agreement.

All aircraft are "valid multirole" assured the officer, adding that in the present state none of the five is able to carry a nuclear bomb B-61 – which is a concern for several MPs, including Benedict Hellings (Ecolo) and Wouter De Vriendt (Green).

According to him, the government should approve in the coming months a "Request for Government Proposal" which will launch the program phase.
