Ik zie die modified LCS's er puur in omdat het programma ook zo begonnen is door de LCS's zwaarder te bewapenen en beter uit te rusten voor echte combat operations. Dat het nu uitgelopen is tot een fregat is alleen maar mooi. Maar daardoor verwacht ik dat de LCS's grote kans maken, deze basis is al in gebruik en ''proven'' binnen de USN.

De FREMM is in mijn ogen te groot voor de Yanks met hun bijna 7000 ton komen ze in de buurt van de DDG's. Het ontwerp op basis van de cutter is in mijn ogen kansloos omdat het zeer licht bewapend is, nog minder dan de huidige opties die er liggen binnen de LCS's.

Doodzonde dat vMFF oeverloos is uitgesteld, voor wat wij nu weten zou het goed in buurt komen van de Amerikaanse wensen en eisen... als zou 26 kts roet in het eten hebben kunnen gegooid, maar helaas.

Ik denk ook dat de Spanjaarden de troef in handen hebben...
Het lijkt me een goed ontwerp, degelijke lijnen, klassieke CODOG-propulsie met een 28+ kn snelheid.
Ook het bemanningsconcept lijkt met 250 meer op zijn Amerikaans.
Feit dat de sensoren en bewapening ook Amerikaans zijn en bijgevolg reeds in gebruik zal zeker ook positief wegen in het verdere selectieprocess.

Navy awards design contracts for future frigate

WASHINGTON —The Navy has awarded $15 million contracts to five companies for conceptual designs for the FFG(X) program.

Huntington Ingalls, Lockheed Martin, Austal USA, General Dynamics Bath Iron Works, and Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri have all been asked to submit mature designs over the next 16 months before the Navy drops down to a single detailed design and construction contract.

All the contracts contain options that could grow the value to between $22 million and $23 million, according to the contract announcement. The work is expected to be complete by June, 2019.

The U.S. Navy intends to award the contract for the first FFG(X) in 2020. It will buy one in 2020 and one in 2021, followed by two each year after that, according to the Navy's most recent 30-year shipbuilding plan. The U.S. Navy's requirement is for 52 small-surface combatants, the bulk of which will be LCS.

Both Austal and Lockheed Martin are competing amped up versions of their littoral combat ships. Huntington Ingalls is offering a version of the Coast Guard's National Security Cutter. Fincantieri is offering its FREMM design. General Dynamics is offering a patrnership with Spanish shipbuilding Navantia, for its F100 frigate.

The Navy is looking for builders to balance value and capabilities, according to a statement, the Naval Sea Systems Command.

"Throughout the accelerated acquisition process for FFG(X), the Navy will incentivize industry to balance cost and capability and achieve the best value solution for the American taxpayer," the statement reads.

Fincantieri to Adapt FREMM Frigate for U.S. Navy

Fincantieri Marine Group announced further details on its plans to adapt its "Best-in-Class" FREMM frigate, already in service for the Italian Navy since 2012, to design the U.S. Navy's new guided-missile frigate, FFG(X).

Fincantieri will lead an experienced industry team, including Gibbs & Cox and Trident Maritime Systems, to design and build these multi-mission ships capable of conducting anti-surface, anti-submarine, and electronic warfare and air defense operations.

As design partners, Gibbs & Cox, will leverage their experience modifying proven hull, mechanical and electrical systems to U.S. Navy standards. Trident Maritime Systems will serve as the Electric and Propulsion System Integrator with responsibility to design, specify and integrate these ship systems and components.

"We've assembled a world-class team of partners to customize to American design standards and deliver an advanced, flexible and highly reliable ship to the U.S. Navy for their current and future needs," said Francesco Valente, president and CEO of Fincantieri Marine Group. "Our American shipyards are tailor-made for building small surface combatants and we have a strong, established and reliable U.S. supply chain."

The Fincantieri FFG(X) design is based on FREMM, the most capable and modern off-the-shelf frigate available in the world for the range of capabilities required by the U.S. Navy. Fincantieri is building 10 FREMMs for the Italian Navy, six of which have been delivered and have already accumulated 30,000 hours and 200,000 nautical miles in real-world operations.

The Fincantieri-led team would construct the FFG(X) ships at its American shipyards, including Fincantieri Marinette Marine in Marinette, Wisconsin, which was modernized for serial production in order to build the U.S. Navy's Littoral Combat Ship.

Inderdaad, lijkt niet echt vooruitgang op het Freedom class frigate.
Ook niet heel overtuigend qua bewapening, zeker gezien de kosten.

Beter gezegd, het is de freedom klasse alleen wat langer. Op het gebied van wapens inderdaad niets dat echt spannend is wel opvallend dat er twee VLS systemen in te lijken zitten maar dat zal niet zo zijn.

- 57 mm mk110 kanon op de boeg
- 16 cells mk41 VLS (diepte onbekend) mogelijk enkel ESSM
-  2 topside deck launchers voor een ASuW raket
- 4 Nulka decoy launchers op de brug
- 1 HEL CIWS achter de hoge opbouw
- 1 SEARAM CIWS
- enkele .50 cal's

Klinkt in mijn ogen meer als een korvet omdat ook de torpedobuizen ontbreken maar wel voorzien is van een towed array sonar (ASW signaal van het schip zelf is erg leuk met die waterjets).

En dan al zeker wanneer de USN d.m.v. "economies of scale" de prijs van een hele fregattenreeks toch omlaag zou moeten krijgen...

Damen heeft samen met Alion CAN een goed ontwerp neergelegd in het Canadese Fregat (CSC) vervangingsprogramma. Alion is voor de USN geen onbekende.

Moving away from the bridge and toward the bow there 16x Mk 41 VLS cells for ESSM and/or Standard Missiles. There are also two spaces intended for Surface to Surface Missile Module (SSMM) with Longbow Hellfire missiles similar to what is fitted aboard LCS (those are intended to counter swarm attacks). The main gun is a BAE Systems Bofors Mk110 57mm as per the RFI.

As we progress towards the stern of the ship, note the presence of a laser weapon system on the starboard side of the ship. There is a SeaRAM launcher on top of the helicopter hangar as per the Navy RFI.

The propulsion system remains unchanged with 4x waterjets. However we noted one last addition on the frigate's hull: the presence of bilge keels. They increase hydrodynamic resistance to rolling, making the ship roll less. Bilge keels are passive stability systems.

Jezus christus. De Amerikanen hebben heel erg veel moeite met het loslaten van de jaren 90 in hun ontwerp of wat is dit.
Die boot lijkt echt totaal niet op een modern schip. De wapensystemen zijn geplaatst alsof ze er 5 min geleden zijn opgeplakt door de modelbouwer die dit bootje in elkaar heeft gezet voor de beurs. Heel stealthy dit...

- Geen aktieve fin-stabilisers dan (bilge keels)
- Iemand een idee wat die 4 recht opstaande dingen zijn bovenop de brug? (Naval) Hellfire launchers?
- Idem voor de ruimte tussen de 57mm en de VLS... Nog meer VLS?

- De plaatsing van de brug is laag en doet me denken aan die van de Canadese fregatten. Daarbovenop lijken me dan de air intakes van de gasturbines (GT's) geplaatst te  zijn en dan heb je nog eens een groot stuk bovenbouw rondom de funnel exhausts van de GT's (eventuele diesels?).
- Voor RAS/BeVo Fuel lijkt een voorziening te zijn bovenop de hangar. 'k Vraag me af of er dan ook e.e.a. voorzien is voor Heavy Jackstay

Dat moet veel beter kunnen.
Me dunkt dat USN/congress-senate/Dept. of Defense dringend eens een lijvige delegatie moet sturen naar het buitenland. De oogkleppen zouden snel afvallen.
De FREMMs waren en zijn volgens mij heden nog steeds niet zo duur - zeker wanneer je er een 30-tal of zo zou van afnemen.
En Damen krijgt gegarandeerd ook zoiets veuls goedkoper klaar.

Navy's cruiser replacement won't be a cruiser, says surface warfare chief
( Misschien wordt juist het fregatten bestand uitgebreid met een next-generation frigate + versie .., goedkoper en meer schepen dan 1 op 1 vervanging van de cruisers )

The U.S. Navy's surface fleet is developing a new class of ship that will replace the cruisers — but it's not another cruiser.

The Navy's director of surface warfare, Rear Adm. Ronald Boxall, told a crowd at the Surface Navy Association's annual symposium that his team is building over the next year a capabilities document that will sketch out the next surface combatant, one that integrates new sensors and technologies that will make it relevant into the future.

"People are always asking: 'What's the next cruiser?' " Boxall said. "What I'm telling you is that it might not be a cruiser. What we are looking for is what do we need our surface ships to do at the big level, what do we need to do at the small level and what do we need to do with unmanned because it is a different Navy out there.

The Navy's next-generation frigate comes with a big price tag

The Navy's next-generation frigate could end up costing just shy of a billion dollars per hull, the Naval Sea Systems Command program manager said Tuesday.

Regan Campbell said the Navy had set an upper limit of $950 million per ship, about half the cost of a Flight IIA Arleigh Burke-class destroyer and nearly double the cost of the littoral combat ship. USNI News was first to report the Navy's cost estimate.

Moving forward on the FFG(X) is among the Navy's top priorities in 2018. The ship is slated to have between 16 and 32 vertical-launch missile tubes and an over-the-horizon, anti-surface missile capability.

The cost estimate surprised some analysts, who thought the number might be lower given previous signals from the Navy. The price tag could also push out some of the high-profile contenders who were interested in the bid.
