US Army to trim Black Hawk helicopter fleet

The U.S. Army is readying to trim its UH-60 Black Hawk utility helicopter fleet by nearly 8% as it prepares to field a replacement, Maj. Gen. Mac McCurry, the Army's Aviation Center of Excellence commander, told Defense News in a recent interview.

The service plans to cut roughly 157 Black Hawks, or 7.5% of its total utility fleet, from its active-duty component. McCurry said the move is intended to help the Army optimize its current fleet while making room in the budget for the Black Hawk's replacement, the Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft, or FLRAA, that will begin fielding in the early 2030s.

A year ago, the Army chose Textron-Bell's V-280 Valor tiltrotor aircraft to replace the 40-year-old Sikorsky-manufactured UH-60. The Army also has plans to replace the Boeing-made AH-64 Apache attack helicopter with the Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft. Two companies are building competitive demonstrator aircraft.

"It's really about balancing the current readiness with the procurement and fielding in the future," McCurry said. "As we looked at our utility fleet specifically, we had grown that fleet since early in the 2000s by over 300 aircraft."

That growth kept pace with the Army's higher end strength during continuous rotations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Black Hawk fleet in the fiscal 2004 timeframe consisted of 1,806 aircraft, but rose to 2,135 aircraft during counterinsurgency operations.

Today, with a smaller force, the service doesn't need to keep all of those helicopters in service, he said. The total will now drop to 1,978 aircraft.

The Army will only be removing the oldest aircraft — a few Alpha models and the rest Lima models — from the active component. Those aircraft will not come from units actively deploying or preparing to deploy, but from what the service calls "operational readiness floats," McCurry said.

By targeting these aircraft, he added, the service reduces the overall fleet age, lowering long-term maintenance requirements, including mitigating "some critical parts challenges."

The Army plans to sell the divested Black Hawks either through Foreign Military Sales transactions or through an exchange and sales program, McCurry said. Each aircraft is expected to fetch roughly $2 million.

When the aircraft will be taken out of the fleet is not yet determined, McCurry said. Fleet managers between Program Executive Office Aviation and Army Aviation and Missile Command will assess the health of the fleet to determine which aircraft should move and when.

The Army remains committed to upgrading its Mike-model Black Hawks, the latest variant, McCurry said.

The service is also providing Victor models to the Army National Guard. Victor models are upgraded Lima-model helicopters with digital cockpits identical to the Mike model.

Black Hawks are also expected to get brand new engines through the Improved Turbine Engine Program, but the effort has been delayed due to technical and supply chain issues during engine development, testing and early production phases.

Meanwhile, the Army is planning to examine the size of the Boeing-manufactured CH-47 Chinook cargo fleet to ensure it also matches the service's force structure and end strength, McCurry said.

AH-64 Apache attack helicopters will not get the same review at this time, he added, because "we have remained short of AH-64s with some recent losses and ... we are still short AH-64s."

As costs rise, UK has made 'no decision' to ditch H-47 Extended Range helo acquisition, yet

The UK originally announced a £1.4 billion agreement ($1.8 billion) had been reached for the 14 H-47 ER aircraft in May 2021 with deliveries set to begin in 2026 and run until 2030, but budgetary pressures linked to COVID-19 caused London to order a three year delay.

The main rotary acquisition that looks to be under threat, and which already has been delayed on several occasions, is the £1 billion ($1.3 billion) New Medium Helicopter (NMH) program, aimed at replacing Royal Air Force Puma and other smaller rotorcraft fleets.

Industry competitors Leonardo, offering the multirole AW149; Airbus, pitching the H175M; and Lockheed Martin, offering the S-70M Black Hawk, still await the launch of the NMH Invitation to Negotiate phase. Breaking Defense previously reported that an original planned buy of up to 44 helicopters had since been reduced to between 25-35 units, according to Lenny Brown, managing director of Airbus Helicopters UK.

For the H-47 ER, the UK originally announced a £1.4 billion agreement ($1.8 billion) had been reached for the 14 aircraft in May 2021 with deliveries set to begin in 2026 and run until 2030, but budgetary pressures linked to COVID-19 caused London to order a three year delay, while a delivery schedule review has since been called for. Under plans published in the UK Defence Command Paper in 2021, the new fleet of ER platforms are set to replace the nine oldest Chinooks in the MoD's Chinook inventory.

"We're having conversations with Boeing about the next steps of the programme and I'd expect the decisions on that to be taken shortly," said Williams.

A Boeing spokesperson told Breaking Defense any comments "on the status of the programme" should be deferred to the UK and US governments.

Williams declined to comment on how much the procurement had gone over budget, but said his department is attempting to "manage away" increased costs.

In September, James Cartlidge, UK defence procurement minister, confirmed in response to a parliamentary question that costs on the program had risen by £37 million ($46 million). He also noted that forward purchasing arrangements had been used to mitigate foreign exchange rate pressures on the acquisition.

The head civil servant from the UK's Ministry of Defence (MoD) has told lawmakers that "no decision has been taken to withdraw" from a planned procurement of 14 US-made H-47 Chinook Extended Range (ER) heavy lift helicopters, though inflation and a decision to defer the order have caused costs to increase over a set budget of £1.5 billion ($1.9 billion).

David Williams, UK MoD permanent secretary, said during a British Defence Committee hearing today that any decision to drop the deal would have "an impact on the range of operations that our armed forces are able to prosecute," and confirmed that negotiations between London and Washington to close a Foreign Military Sale are ongoing.

That said, the push for the procurement to continue is down to a political policy around the need to prosecute "the hardest targets" identified by special forces, but if "that requirement disappeared tomorrow morning, then we wouldn't need" the new helicopters, Lt. Gen. Rob Magowan, deputy chief of the defense staff for financial and military capability, told the Committee.

See how the technology we make makes the impossible, possible.
Williams suggested that the question of whether the UK should "carry on" with the H-47 ER procurement had been triggered by "concern in the summer" around the issue of affordability and the impact cost increases could have on other helicopter acquisitions.

The main rotary acquisition that looks to be under threat, and which already has been delayed on several occasions, is the £1 billion ($1.3 billion) New Medium Helicopter (NMH) program, aimed at replacing Royal Air Force Puma and other smaller rotorcraft fleets.

The new H-47 ER helicopters have a top speed of 300 kilometers per hour (186.4 mph) and can transport up to 55 personnel or 10 tons of cargo. They also feature digital cockpits, modernized airframes to improve survivability and flight control systems so pilots can hover in areas of reduced visibility, according to the UK MoD.

Israeli AH-64D Apaches destroy Hamas bunkers with special Hellfire missiles

The appearance of a mysterious AGM-114 Hellfire missile on an Israeli AH-64D Apache attack helicopter in promotional material released by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) has left observers puzzled, as reported by Parth Satam in EurAsian Times. Based on the color of the 'bands' and the missile's overall color scheme, it could either be equipped with a thermobaric warhead designed to destroy Hamas's underground infrastructure or an incendiary explosive.

Depending on the warhead mode selected by the Apache's gunner, the AGM-114 Hellfire missile can either explode in the air or upon impact. Both the incendiary and thermobaric missiles, if used to target Hamas tunnels, can result in significant devastation to the underground infrastructure and anyone inside.

On November 4, the Israeli Air Force posted a photo on its official Twitter (X) account, showing an AH-64D presumably flying toward Gaza. However, one of the Hellfire missiles on the inner pylon of the right-side wing stub had a red-colored band, which stood out from the three other Hellfire missiles with yellow bands, typically seen on live Hellfires and this Israeli Apache in particular. The missile's overall color was also grayish, unlike the dark olive color. The Israeli Air Force later removed the photo and replaced it with an image of an Apache carrying four Hellfires with only yellow bands. Puzzling, isn't it?

Parth Satam reports that military analysts on social media pointed to other open-source pictures of Hellfire missiles with yellow bands. Official U.S. military weapons classification manuals suggest that a red band could represent an incendiary warhead or an AGM-114N with a thermobaric warhead. The latter option appears to be more suited to the IDF's needs in Gaza for targeting bunkers and underground structures.

A thermobaric warhead, also known as a vacuum bomb, consists of two separate explosive charges: one charge is mostly fuel, which mixes with atmospheric oxygen to create an aerosol-like cloud, while the second charge detonates it, generating a massive blast wave. The high temperature and destructive shockwave make thermobaric weapons particularly effective in enclosed spaces such as tunnels, bunkers, and caves, which are prevalent in Gaza.

There's also a possibility that the AGM-114N with a thermobaric warhead does not always feature a red band, as suggested by leading military analyst Guy Plopsky, Parth Satam writes. This raises the possibility that the markings could be specific to Israel, as the country is known to customize the performance specifications of weapons it procures from the U.S.

One conceivable scenario where Apaches and Hellfires could be utilized is when the helicopter fires the missile into an exposed tunnel or bunker captured by IDF soldiers. The resulting explosion and shockwave could potentially destroy several kilometers of the tunnel, rendering it permanently unusable.

NEXT-GEN: ITEP turbine gaat de FARA-prototypes laten vliegen

26 okt 2023  Categorie: Militair, Nieuwe toestellen / Tests, Nieuws

Boeing's Enhanced AH-64E Apache Completes First Flight

- Version 6.5 offers upgraded connectivity, lethality, navigation and survivability capabilities.
- Boeing will next integrate the U.S. Army's Improved Turbine Engine onto the fleet.

MESA, Ariz., Oct. 11, 2023 – The newest version of the AH-64E Apache has successfully flown with an upgraded capabilities suite as Boeing [NYSE: BA] continues to modernize the platform. The upgraded E-model Apache, known as Version 6.5, or V6.5, is the next configuration of the world's premier attack helicopter.

"We saw our hard work come to life with this first flight," said Christina Upah, vice president of Attack Helicopter Programs and senior Boeing Mesa site executive. "These enhancements will take the E-model Apache to the next level in terms of capabilities, ensuring Apaches continue to dominate future battlefields."

V6.5, awarded by the U.S. Department of Defense in December 2021, includes software updates enhancing capabilities and improving the pilot interface. Some of those enhancements include:
  • Optimized route and attack planning
  • Enhanced Link 16 features
  • Integration of an Open Systems Interface, setting the stage for Modular Open Systems Approach for maximum interoperability, faster integration and advanced capabilities fielding.

"We're very excited about the ongoing development of the V6.5 software as it paves the way for Apache modernization," Col. John (Jay) Maher, U.S. Army Apache project manager, said. "V6.5 aligns the entire E model fleet under the same software, streamlining training and maintenance while providing a pathway for sensor/capability parity, and enables the Army to address mandates and critical technologies. Ensuring relevance into the future is a top priority."

Building onto V6.5, the company is working with the U.S. Army to integrate the Improved Turbine Engine (ITE). The engine, a General Electric Aerospace T901, will offer improvements in reach, available power, time on station and fuel efficiency, as well as sustainment improvements like health and usage monitoring, maintenance and engine lifespan.
