I spy with my little eye: BAE presentation reveals interesting next-gen Destroyer concept

Australia isn?t alone in facing questions about the amount of firepower available to our surface fleet and recognising this, it appears that BAE Systems has been quietly working away on a next-generation destroyer concept building on the Type 26 base, with some impressive results.

As an island nation, Australia?s sovereignty, security, and prosperity is intrinsically linked to our maritime surrounds and the uncontested and unmolested access to the global maritime commons.

Driven in large part by the continued expansion of Beijing?s own already formidable naval forces, coupled with the rising capability of emerging powers throughout the Indo-Pacific, the relative power and capability of the Royal Australian Navy?s surface fleet has been called into question.

Front and centre for these concerns is the declining number of missile cells and accordingly firepower the Royal Australian Navy can bring to bear at any given time. This reality has drawn the attention of many strategic policy analysts, thought leaders, and policymakers as the nation grapples with how best to equip the Navy.

Detailing this truly terrifying state of naval firepower, former Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral (Ret?d) David Shackleton explains, ?In 1995, the Royal Australian Navy possessed 368 missile cells on its major surface combatants. By 2020, that had reduced to 208, a 43 per cent reduction in firepower. It will take until 2045 for the Navy to get back up to its 1995 capacity. From 2050, it will plateau at 432, a net increase of 64 cells.?

Unpacking this further, this time focusing on the number of hulls at sea, VADM (Ret?d) Shackleton adds, ?By 2006, when the RAN?s final Anzac frigate, HMAS Perth, was commissioned, the class had 64 cells, but the ESSMs they contained were to be used for self-defence. In the interim, two of six older Perry Class ships were decommissioned to provide funds to upgrade the remaining four, including adding eight VLS cells. That gave each ship 48 cells, and an improved capability with the longer-range SM-2. After modernisation, the Perry Class went from six ships to four, but the total number of cells went from 240 to 192.

?In 1995, the RAN operated three guided missile destroyers, six guided missile frigates and the first of eight smaller frigates, with 368 missile cells in all, the most it has ever possessed. By 2020, the combined effect of several force structure changes meant that across its fleet of eight Anzac Class and three Hobart Class surface combatants, the RAN could provide only 208 cells,? Shackleton adds.

Recognising this serious shortfall in the face of mounting challenges and adversary capabilities across the Indo-Pacific, the Albanese government?s Defence Strategic Review has moved to reshape the Royal Australian Navy into a flexible, future-proofed force capable of meeting the tactical and strategic operational requirements placed upon the service by the nation?s policymakers.

Ik vind het nog steeds erg jammer dat onze Goalkeeper niet door onszelf doorontwikkeld is zoals de Koreaanse CWIS-II.
Of laten we onze Goalkeepers straks ombouwen door LIG Nex1  ;)

MADEX 2023: South Korea to equip Ulsan-class Batch III frigates with CIWS-II in 2026

07 June 2023

The Republic of Korea Navy's (RoKN's) Ulsan-class Batch III frigates will be equipped with the indigenously developed ?CIWS-II' close in weapon system (CIWS) but only from 2026.

This indicative timeline is almost two years later than originally planned as the RoKN has requested for slight design changes to be made to the CIWS-II, said an LIG Nex1 representative who spoke to Janes at the International Maritime Defense Industry Exhibition (MADEX) 2023 in Busan, South Korea.

In 2021 LIG Nex1 won the contract to locally develop and produce a CIWS that can be deployed on future RoKN ships. The service largely relies on the Goalkeeper CIWS for its close-in defence requirements and the weapon is deployed on vessels such as the KDX-I and KDX-2 destroyers. The RoKN has also opted for the Phalanx CIWS for its second Dokdo-class amphibious assault ship, ROKS Marado.

LIG Nex1's CIWS-II proposal is based on a seven-barrelled gatling gun system that has been incorporated with a tracking active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, a four-faced AESA search radar, and an electro-optical tracker. These components are mounted within a cupola with reduced radar cross-section (RCS) features.

The weapon can fire about 4,200 rounds per minute and can engage hostile precision-guided munitions at distances of up to 2 km. For hostile aircraft, its maximum engagement range is about 3.5 km.

Changes that have been requested from the RoKN largely pertain to the angles found on the weapon, said Hyunseok Lee, chief manager of LIG's Nex1's maritime surveillance and combat systems, in his interview with Janes at MADEX 2023.

Leonardo announces new defence systems for naval platforms and land vehicles

Leonardo?s Lionfish 30 remote-controlled turret has a compact and lightweight design to allow installation on small naval platforms. (Image: Leonardo)

Leonardo has launched two new turrets for naval and land defence, exhibiting them for the first time at Seafuture (La Spezia, 5-8 June). The turrets, the LIONFISH? 30 and the HITFIST? 30 UL, bring advanced new capabilities and performance to their respective product families. Both remote-controlled turrets integrate the new 30mm X-GUN, an ITAR-free, electrically-powered weapon system developed in-house by Leonardo, which incorporates innovative, patented technologies.

The LIONFISH? 30 naval turret joins Leonardo?s range of small-calibre LIONFISH? products, which includes the 12.7mm Ultralight, Inner Reloading and Top models, as well as a 20mm version. The 30?s compact and lightweight design allows for installation on small platforms, enabling protection from all types of asymmetric threat, including drones and helicopters, within complex scenarios with multiple targets, or multi-targets. This capability is driven by sophisticated Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms that perform contextual analysis and optimise engagement against multiple simultaneous threats. Other distinctive features include a fast rate of fire, long operating range and the ability to use new-concept high-efficiency air burst ammunition with preformed fragmentation which is designed to be more effective against aerial threats such as mini and micro-sized drones. The system shares a number of features with other LIONFISH family models, including architecture, its ability to be controlled remotely via a high-resolution local console, its ease of use and maintenance. The new turret is also equipped with an electro-optical suite that enables 360? surveillance and tracking.
