US Navy starts RFCM pod trials from P-8A Poseidon

12 APRIL 2021

by Richard Scott

The US Navy (USN) has begun flight testing a new pod-mounted radio frequency countermeasure (RFCM) prototype developed for the P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft.

A member of the Air Test and Evaluation Squadron (VX) 20 puts a pod-mounted radio frequency countermeasure system on a P-8A Poseidon. (US Navy)

A first airworthiness flight was completed by the Air Test and Evaluation Squadron 20 (VX 20) on 12 March at the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) Atlantic Test Ranges. The pod has subsequently undertaken further testing at the Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake in California.

The new RFCM decoy, which integrates BAE Systems' existing AN/ALE-55 Fibre Optic Towed Decoy (FOTD) within an underwing pod, has been developed in response to a requirement raised by the Naval Air Systems Command's (NAVAIR's) Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Aircraft Program Office (PMA-290) to improve P-8A platform self-protection against RF-guided surface-to-air missile threats. While the P-8A is already equipped with the Northrop Grumman AN/AAQ-24 Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasures System for protection against infrared threats, it has no active protection against radar-guided threats.

According to NAVAIR, it has taken just over a year from the start of the programme to getting the RFCM pod into test. PMA-290 initially worked with the Advanced Tactical Aircraft Protection Systems Program Office (PMA-272), the Rapid Prototyping, Experimentation & Demonstration (RPED) team, and the NAWCAD Aircraft Prototype Systems Division (APSD) to establish the basis for the programme. The RPED team supported APSD in designing a shell based on the certified AGM-84 Harpoon missile shape, engineering the tracks and housing to accommodate and deploy the AN/ALE-55 FOTD.

France offers Germany four Atlantic 2 maritime patrol aircraft

The French Armed Force Ministry has offered four Breguet Atlantic 2 planes to plug a looming gap in the German Navy's anti-submarine capabilities, provided that Berlin springs for modernizing the planes.

"Depending on Germany's needs, the four planes could be sold once the update to Standard 6 will be taken in charge by Germany," a French defense spokesperson wrote in an email to Defense News.

"The four planes will be at the latest aircraft standard which successfully passed the initial operational capability milestone of the French navy in 2020, with a range of high-tech equipment for maritime patrol missions," the email read. "The proposal includes training and maintenance."

The ministry declined to specify a price tag for the offer. Weapons and countermeasures would be "processed in a second step," the email stated.

Driving the French offer is a desire to keep Germany connected to the future Maritime Airborne Warfare System that the two countries want to jointly develop for fielding around 2035. But the German sea service needs new planes by 2025, the year the current P-3 Orion fleet is slated to reach the end of its serviceable life.

Boeing begins Poseidon assembly for Norway

12 APRIL 2021

by Gareth Jennings

Norway's procurement of five Boeing P-8A Poseidons took a major leap forward on 12 April, with the announcement by the manufacturer that assembly of the first maritime multimission aircraft (MMA) at its facilities near Seattle, Washington, had begun.

The 737-800 fuselage built by Spirit Aerosystems in Wichita, Kansas, arrived by rail at Boeing's Renton plant on 12 April. It will be mated to 737-900 wings and other flight systems on Boeing Commercial Airplanes' 737 production line, ahead of delivery to Boeing's Defense, Space & Security at nearby Puget Sound for the installation of military systems, testing, and customer handover. (Boeing)

The first 737-800 fuselage built by Spirit Aerosystems in Wichita, Kansas, arrived by rail at Boeing's Renton plant on the same day as the announcement, and some four months after the build began in January.

The fuselage will be mated to 737-900 wings and other flight systems on Boeing Commercial Airplanes' 737 production line, ahead of delivery to Boeing's Defense, Space & Security at nearby Puget Sound for the installation of military systems, testing, and customer handover.

The Royal Norwegian Air Force (RoNAF) is to receive its first Poseidon later in 2021, with five aircraft eventually replacing the service's six ageing Lockheed Martin P-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) and three Dassault Falcon DA-20 Jet Falcon surveillance aircraft.

Norway signed for its five aircraft on 29 March 2017 with the overall programme valued at NOK10 billion (USD1.2 billion), some of which will come from the country's intelligence services budget. All five P-8As are set to be delivered between 2021 and 2023.

Sabena technics starts upgrading French Navy ATL2 MPA to Standard 6

Sabena technics has welcomed a first ATL2 maritime patrol aircraft, as part of the program designed to modernize the aircraft's combat system to standard 6, the company said in a statement.

The contract for the upgraded (standard 6) ATL2 combat system was awarded in October 2013 to Dassault Aviation and Thales (co-contractors) by the French Defense Procurement Agency DGA.

The program covers a fleet of eighteen aircraft, eleven of which will be modernized by the French aeronautical maintenance center (SIAé). Seven aircraft will be upgraded between 2019 and 2023 by Dassault Aviation, who chose to rely on the know-how of Sabena technics to support it as a subcontractor on this program.

Sabena technics' teams will therefore ensure that the modification is carried out on a few of these aircraft, the first of which has just been welcomed at the MRO's facility in Dinard (France).

We are delighted to welcome the ATL2 in our facilities for the first time. Our technicians were qualified last summer by Dassault Aviation at its Istres center and are now ready to deliver the best quality of service while strictly respecting the deadlines. Following the modification program of the Falcon 50 of the French Navy, today our cooperation extends to a new type of aircraft, to our greatest satisfaction.
Philippe Rochet, CEO of Sabena technics.

The ATL2 Standard 6 MPA reached initial operational capacity on 18 December 2020. The IOC validation came at the end of an intense period of operational evaluation conducted by the ATL2 detachment of the CEPA/10S Air Test and Evaluation Squadron of the French Navy. This evaluation revealed a significant capability enhancement, particularly in the field of anti-submarine warfare (ASW).

About ATL2 Standard 6 MPA
For the record, the contract for the upgraded (standard 6) ATL2 combat system was awarded by the defense procurement agency DGA on October 4, 2013. The program covers 18 aircraft, with the French Navy originally fielding 22 "legacy" ATL2s. Dassault Aviation is delivering a total of seven upgraded ATL2s between 2019 and 2023. In parallel, the SIAé aeronautical maintenance center will upgrade 11 aircraft.

The first two aircraft upgraded by Dassault Aviation were delivered to the French Navy in October 2019. A third ATL2 was delivered in April 2020. As part of the qualification trials, a "live" AM39 Exocet air-launched anti-ship missile was test fired by an upgraded MPA in June 2020 (picture above). Moving forward, two more Atlantique 2 "Standard 6" are set to be delivered in 2021 for a total fleet of five operational aircraft by the time the FOC is achieved.

The "Standard 6" upgrade work includes:
•A new radar: The Thales Search Master with active antenna,
•A new acoustic subsystem by Thales: It gathers and processes signals from the latest-generation of sonobuoys for submarine detection,
•A new navigation console designed by Dassault Aviation,
•New consoles for the tactical display subsystem, developed by SIAé
•Full integration of WESCAM MX-30 optronics

The standard 6 upgrade improves the ATL2s' capability to support the Strategic Oceanic Force (French SSBN fleet), to deal with modern threats (future nuclear or conventional submarines, naval forces at sea, etc.) and to support air-land missions, until 2030. The ATL2 is then set to be replaced by the French-German MAWS program.
