Rheinmetall and KMW to upgrade Puma armoured vehicles for German army

Rheinmetall (RHMG.DE) and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) have received an order from the German army to upgrade 143 Puma infantry fighting vehicles, the companies said on Wednesday

The order for their joint venture PSM is valued at around 770 million euros ($843.92 million), they said in a joint statement.

According to the companies, they will retrofit the armoured vehicles with key capabilities for firepower and command and control by 2029.

The contract, which was signed in 2021, included two options for modernising the vehicles, both of which Berlin has decided to execute now.

Fuchs opvolger: Duitsland sluit zich officieel aan bij het CAVS-programma



Nadat het ministerie van Defensie in juni 2022 een intentieverklaring had ondertekend om deel te nemen aan het door Finland geleide CAVS-programma (Common Armoured Vehicle System) voor een nieuw 6X6-transportvoertuig, heeft Duitsland zich nu officieel bij het programma aangesloten. Volgens een persbericht van de Finse bewapeningsgroep Patria heeft Duitsland vandaag de zogenaamde Technical Arrangement (TA) van het multinationale CAVS-programma ondertekend. "Door de technische overeenkomst te ondertekenen, is Duitsland nu officieel toegetreden tot het programma", schrijft het bedrijf in zijn verklaring. Bovendien heeft Zweden, dat in 2022 officieel tot het programma is toegetreden al 20 CAVS-voertuigen besteld, waarvan de eerste in 2023 aan Zweden zullen worden geleverd.

Het doel van de deelname van Duitsland aan het programma is blijkbaar om te onderzoeken in hoeverre de verouderde vloot van Bundeswehr gepantserde transportvoertuigen Fuchs kan worden vervangen door een voertuig dat op de markt verkrijgbaar is. Ongeveer 900 Fuchs-pantsertransportvoertuigen in ongeveer 30 verschillende varianten zijn momenteel nog steeds in gebruik in de Bundeswehr.

De loutere toetreding van Duitsland tot het programma wordt niet automatisch gevolgd door de selectiebeslissing voor een mogelijke Fuchs-opvolger op basis van het CAVS-voertuig. Aansluiting is echter een noodzaak om de voertuigen in de Duitse krijgsmacht te testen en zo een toekomstige selectiebeslissing voor te bereiden. Het federale ministerie van Defensie heeft op 1 november 2022 aangekondigd dat het van plan is Patria-voertuigen aan te schaffen voor interne Bundeswehr-tests.Als voorwaarde voor de start van het Fuchs-opvolgerproject zal in 2023 een potentieel opvolgersysteem voor de Fuchs TPz, het Finse Patria-systeem, dat door het leger is geidentificeerd en op de markt beschikbaar is, worden getest, aldus de staatssecretaris van het parlement. Siemtje M?ller in een brief aan leden van de Bondsdag - Begrotingscommissie. Volgens rapporten is voor de tweede helft van 2023 een bijbehorende sjabloon van 25 miljoen gepland, waarmee de testvoertuigen moeten worden gekocht.

CAVS
CAVS is een multinationaal programma voor 6x6-transportvoertuigen dat onder Finse leiding wordt uitgevoerd. Finland, Letland en Estland nemen sinds 2019 deel aan het programma, Zweden sinds 2021. Duitsland is nu het vijfde land dat deelneemt aan CAVS. Als aanbieder van het 6?6-voertuigplatform is Patria verantwoordelijk voor de systeemontwikkeling als onderdeel van CAVS.

De Patria 6x6 is gebaseerd op een voertuig met dezelfde aandrijfformule dat destijds door Sisu werd gebouwd voor het Finse leger, ook wel bekend als de Patria XA. Dit was ongeveer dezelfde generatie gepantserde voertuigen op wielen als de Fuchs. Een belangrijk verschil tussen de nieuwe Patria 6x6 en het Sisu-voertuig is volgens de fabrikant de onafhankelijke wielophanging, een krachtigere Scania-vrachtwagenmotor 294 kW vermogen en een koppel van 1.870 Nm en moderne elektronica.

Het enige grote onderdeel uit Duitsland is de ZF-versnellingsbak. Het maximale gewicht wordt opgegeven als 24 ton, waarvan 8,5 ton voor het laadvermogen. Bescherming bereikt STANAG 4569 Level 2 (ballistische en mijnbescherming). Optioneel kan volgens de fabrikant ook Level 4 (ballistische en mijnbescherming) worden geimplementeerd.

Als de Bundeswehr in het voordeel van de Finse pantserwagen beslist, is productie onder licentie in Duitsland ook denkbaar, zoals Patria-CEO Esa Rautalinko begin januari 2023 in een interview met het Handelsblatt uitlegde. Volgens goed geinformeerde kringen is het bedrijf momenteel in gesprek met meerdere Duitse tankbouwers over hoe licentieproductie in Duitsland eruit zou kunnen zien. Volgens berichten zijn of worden er gesprekken gevoerd met FFG Flensburger Fahrzeugbau Gesellschaft mbH, Krauss-Maffei Wegmann en Rheinmetall, maar is er volgens goed geinformeerde kringen nog geen besluit genomen.

Troubled Ajax payments resume, gets new in-service date   ( gaan toch weer verder ..  .. laten we het beste er van hopen. )

The Ministry of Defence say that ?positive progress? has been made with Ajax as new in-service dates are confirmed and payments resume to General Dynamics.

UPDATE/CORRECTION 16/03/2023 ? Thise headline originally claimed that a new payment was being given to General Dynamics UK, but that was wrong. What?s happening is that payments are resuming, the headline has been amended.

The Ajax is a group of armoured fighting vehicles being developed by General Dynamics UK for the British Army. It has suffered serious development and production difficulties.

The MOD have developed with General Dynamics a revised schedule for the delivery of vehicles that is, subject to contract amendment, robust, realistic, and achievable. Revised key delivery milestones set a meaningful Initial Operating Capability of a trained and deployable squadron. This is scheduled to be achieved between July and December 2025. Full Operating Capability will be met when the Army has trained and converted forces to the Ajax platform to deliver Armoured Cavalry capability to the Deep Reconnaissance Strike Brigade and its two Armoured Brigade Combat Teams. This is scheduled to be achieved between October 2028 and September 2029.?

Manned-Unmanned Teaming is revolutionizing the battlefield. Collaboration between manned and unmanned systems not only expands tactical scope, but also reduces risk to technical and human resources in uncertain or hostile environments.

Unmanned ground-based systems, such as Milrem's THeMIS, can be controlled directly from the vehicle by integrating the command unit. Operation, display and evaluation can thus be easily performed from familiar systems such as DINGO 2 HD, BOXER APC*, BOXER tracked or the modular command post container M2CP. However, automated loading and launching of unmanned drone systems (UAV for short) is also possible.

The second scenario focused on new solutions such as the LEGUAN RC (remote controlled) or the Type-X unmanned combat vehicle from Milrem Robotics, which provided a preview of future developments.

Rheinmetall from Germany unveils its new combat support tracked vehicle based on Lynx IFV

During a defense exhibition in Australia, the German company Rheinmetall unveiled its "Lynx" series infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) derivative, the combat support vehicle. Although it was only exhibited for the show, the "Lynx" combat support vehicle attracted attention with its sleek appearance and impressive performance.



The "Lynx" combat support vehicle is a multi-functional support vehicle developed by Rheinmetall based on the "Lynx" KF-41 IFV (Infantry Fighting Vehicle). It is 7.7 meters long, 3.6 meters wide, and 3.3 meters high, and has a combat weight of over 40 tons. The vehicle inherits the chassis and armor system of the "Lynx" KF-41 infantry fighting vehicle, offering high mobility and protection capabilities.

The "Lynx" combat support vehicle uses the same armor protection as the "Lynx" KF-41 infantry fighting vehicle, with welded steel plates and additional armor, forming a protective "golden bell" around the vehicle. The front armor of the "Lynx" combat support vehicle can withstand 30mm cannon fire, and the side armor can withstand 14.5mm machine gun bullets. The vehicle also features a V-shaped anti-mine chassis and independent suspension anti-mine seats, capable of withstanding the explosive shock wave from a 10-kilogram TNT anti-tank mine. Furthermore, the vehicle is equipped with nuclear, biological, and chemical protection devices, as well as an automatic fire suppression system, providing comprehensive multi-layered protection for the crew.

Despite its heavy armor, the "Lynx" combat support vehicle has impressive mobility. Its power system uses a Liebherr diesel engine with an output of 1,140 horsepower. The vehicle has a top speed of 70 km/h, a maximum range of 500 km, can cross a 1-meter high step, ford water 1.5 meters deep, and cross trenches 2.5 meters wide, offering mobility comparable to most main battle tanks.

As a supporting vehicle for the "Lynx" KF-41 IFV, the "Lynx" combat support vehicle provides comprehensive wartime support. Therefore, it integrates a variety of engineering modules.

The "Lynx" combat support vehicle features a hydraulic crane with a telescopic boom that can rotate 360 degrees for operation. When necessary, it can be converted into a grab or rock crusher. Additionally, the vehicle is fitted with a bulldozer blade and a towing winch, offering limited engineering capabilities.

The primary mission of the "Lynx" combat support vehicle is damage control and accompanying maintenance support for infantry fighting vehicles. It can repair damaged or stranded vehicles and tow them to the nearest repair station or support node. When lifting equipment or small components, its front-end bucket can be lowered to the ground for stability. The vehicle can also use the bulldozer blade to clear obstacles on the road, fill ditches, and engage in engineering tasks such as opening passages and building defensive structures. The cargo platform at the rear of the vehicle can carry supplies, and with the addition of an onboard fuel tank, it can perform refueling tasks, truly offering multi-purpose and comprehensive functionality.

Hoop nog steeds op lift met de Noorse bestelling voor eigen Tank Bat. Inmiddels wel mooie brugleggers Genietanks en berging modernisering. Volgens mij loopt de Leo2 BARV ook nog steeds als project. Mooie machines.

Heeft toch niks te maken met situatie Ukraine, gaat het optreden van de Duitse luchtlandingseenheden met de Wiesel 1 of vervanger daardoor veranderen? Behoeftestelling Wiesel 2 is gebaseerd op eisen en wensen vanuit Duitse defensie en niet vanuit een fatansie.

Spot on. Maar haha, hij volgt dit project al wel vanaf het begin. Ik zie hem al in de bosjes zitten daar, en steeds rondjes omnhet gebouw fietsend. Staand op z'n trappers en continue ongemakkelijk starend naar alle ramen en snel doortrappen als er dan iemand naar buiten loopt en wil vragen wat ie daar de hele tijd doet. Om dan na 10 min. weer terug te keren en verder te gaan staren

Inderdaad..volledig mee bekend..volg het project al van de start. Maar er is versnelling door effect oorlog Oekraine terwijl ik teveel signalen zie dat en de lessen van die oorlog nog niet voldoende kent en doorvoert. Dat is overigens een bekend algemeen fenomeen..en daar verliest men en ook wij oorlogen door met teveel doden en gewonden aan onze kant..en dat is iets om te proberen te voorkomen.

Het zo hard benodigde percentage defensiebudget wat al weer kritisch onder druk staat na jaren hard en veel vechten, ook hier op het eens zo mooie Defensieforum, om dit beleidsdoel te maken na defensieslachtingen van met name VVD en CDA door Henk Kamp en Hans Hillen. Wat zeg je nou eigelijk.. je spreekt jezelf in iedere post wel tegen. Net als hier.. geen toekomst..maar dan ineens weer wel. 

Niet in die rol, maar wel met dit wapen, en dat systeem. Niet voor luchtmobiele acties, maar wel bij luchtmobiel en de mariniers.

Dit is dan ook alleen maar te begrijpen voor mensen die een bepaalde diagnose hebben gekregen... Wij snappen dat allemaal niet...

Daardoor begrijpen veel mensen mijn vaak wat ingewikkelder denken en duiden of verfijnde complexere taalgebruik en (taal)humor niet altijd.

Heeft dit een toekomst? Na analyse en koppeling aan de laatste stand ontwikkelingen oorlogsvoering en gevechtsveld volgens mij niet meer voor de beoogde taak voor luchtmobiele eenheden als vervanging voor de dus ook achterhaalde Wiesel. Wel denk ik als algemeen licht passief verkenningsvoertuig voor luchtmobiele en mariniers eenheden. Samen met een middelzwaar nieuw verkenningsvoertuig als vervanging voor de Fennek. Dan wel zonder het kanon maar zeg een granaatwerper en passief en actief beschermingssysteem voor zelfverdediging.

Vanuit de inhoud, dus een conceptueel testvoertuig. 1:1 vervanging Wiesel.

The GSD LuWa is a new generation of light, air-transportable armored fighting vehicle developed and designed by the German company IABG as a successor to the Wiesel 1, a tracked airborne armored vehicle that is in service with the German army, and more specifically, with the airborne troops.

As a product-neutral general contractor on behalf of the German armed forces, IABG thus achieved a further milestone in the project, which has been running since April 2020. The aim of the project is to investigate concepts and technologies for a possible successor system to the Wiesel 1 airborne tracked weapon carrier armored vehicle.

The GSD LuWa is based on a tracked chassis consisting of two-track independent suspension each including three road wheels and one return roller. The 4-track layout is to improve survivability against mine strikes etc, lose a track and can keep going, each track is individually powered by an electric motor.

The layout of the GSD LuWa is very unique and the whole vehicle has been designed to be small in size with lightweight allowing the vehicle to be easily airdropped. The hull of the vehicle is equipped with two large bullet-proof windows at the front and one additional small window on each side, offering a 180? view for the crew.

The GSD LuWa has a crew of two and is equipped with a remotely operated weapon station manufactured by the Slovenian company Valhalla Turrets which is armed with one 30mm automatic cannon able to engage targets at a maximum firing range of 3,000 m. The 30mm cannon is able to fire a wide range of ammunition types as well as the APFSDS-T (Armor-Piercing Fin-Stabilized Discarding Sabot) round that provides ample armor penetration against current and future battlefield threats.
