Germany pauses purchases of Puma tanks after operational problems

BERLIN, Dec 19 (Reuters) - Germany will not purchase any more Puma infantry tanks until they have proven themselves to be reliable, Defence Minister Christine Lambrecht said on Monday after several of the vehicles were put out of service during a recent military drill.

"The recent failures of the Puma infantry fighting vehicle are a major setback," Lambrecht said in a statement, adding that she had requested a report on the matter by the end of next week.

Shares in Rheinmetall (RHMG.DE), which manufactures the tanks together with Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW), were down 7% after the minister's announcement. "Our troops must be able to rely on weapon systems being robust and stable even in combat," Lambrecht said, while assuring NATO allies that they could continue to rely on Berlin to fulfill its readiness obligations as part of a joint task force (VJTF) from 2023.

A statement from the German defence ministry said the goal was to make the Puma tanks operational as soon as possible. Meanwhile, the German Bundeswehr military would use Marder tanks, the predecessor model to the Puma, from Jan. 1, in what a ministry spokesperson called a "fall-back solution". Neither Rheinmetall nor KMW would comment on the issues with the Puma model.

The Spiegel magazine reported over the weekend that 18 Puma tanks intended for NATO's very high readiness joint task force next year were not operational after problems arose during a firing exercise. Germany has vowed to boost defence spending and modernise its military in the wake of the Ukraine war, with Chancellor Olaf Scholz's government making 100 billion euros ($106.10 billion) available for defence investments in this year's budget.

Ik verwacht dat de Duitsers met hun wiel keuze gaan voor een combinatie van Boxer, Fuchs & Dingo. Aangezien wij volledig onze 13e lichte brigade integreren met de Duitsers ben ik van mening dat we de exacte voertuig combinatie overnemen.

Ik snap de redenen, maar misschien moet NL wel investeren in eigen standaardisatie en kiezen voor  :
Optie 1, de bestaande oude CV90 toren te herplaatsen
Optie 2, de nieuwe CV90 toren te plaatsen

Problemen met de Puma nog niet opgelost.
De onbemande torens zorgen voor enorme problemen. Opvallend, aangezien er nog steeds gesproken wordt over deze toren op de Boxer zetten.

De Puma is vanaf dag 1 al een probleemkindje van de BW, maar toch is er eerder dit jaar besloten om 229 extra Puma's aan te schaffen. En de toren op de Boxer plaatsen lijkt me de logische keuze voor de BW, dan hebben ze op alle platformen dezelfde toren. En ook Australi? heeft gekozen voor deze toren op de Boxers als CRV variant.

De Puma zal nooit een groot succes worden omdat er geen tot weinig export orders gaan volgen.

Ik ben wel benieuwd of de tracked boxer ooit orders gaat krijgen, ik ben bang dat als Duitsland dat niet doet er ook geen andere landen gaan volgen. Het idee is natuurlijk interessant maar je moet er als land wel achter staan. De Lynx die Rheinmetall nu heeft ontwikkeld en overal aanbied die kan nog wel eens succesvol gaan worden.

Een doorbraak in het pantserprogramma van Ajax

Volgens de informatie in het onlangs uitgebrachte rapport van het Lagerhuis zijn problemen met de Ajax opgelost door General Dynamics United Kingdom.

Volgens Alex Chalk, staatssecretaris bij het ministerie van Defensie, is het niveau van trillingen en geluid dat tijdens het rijden wordt gegenereerd, gedaald tot veilige niveaus, waardoor het project kan doorgaan naar de volgende fase van betrouwbaarheidstests, die zal beginnen in januari 2023.

CTA International (CTAI) has completed the handover of the final 40mm Cased Telescoped Armament System cannon to the UK MoD on 25 November.

This 515th 40 CT cannon was provided 7 months ahead of schedule.

CTAI delivered the first 40mm cannon to the MoD in 2016, they were intended to be equipped onto the Warrior and Ajax armoured vehicles.

However, now their destination is uncertain. As part of the 2021 UK Integrated Review, the MoD scrapped the Warrior Capability Sustainment Programme.

While the existing Warrior platforms will remain in service until replaced by the Boxer, the plans to upgrade the platform have been scrapped.

Meanwhile, the Ajax programme has been plagued by issues, in particular, the excessive vibrations inside the vehicle have resulted in more than 300 soldiers being assessed for hearing loss.

The platform was expected to reach IOC in mid-2021, however, these issues mean the future of the platform is uncertain.

Moreover, only 245 Ajax platforms will have the cannon, leaving 270 spares from the 515 ordered.

According to Shephard Defence Insight, the cannon fires 40 mm cased telescoped ammunition. The ammunition is contained in a straight tube and can deliver a charge that is four times more powerful than the 30 mm rounds it replaces.

But inside, the company told reporters today, the company?s proposal for the Army?s future Optionally Manned Fighting Vehicle (OMFV) contract is radically different than its predecessor. For starters, you?d have a hard time finding the engine.

Like the other four competitors for OMFV, the BAE machine will use a hybrid-electric engine instead of a traditional internal combustion engine. While other companies haven?t divulged details, at least not yet, BAE?s James Miller, VP for business development, told reporters this morning the BAE design uses a ?serial? hybrid diesel-electric engine that?s ?distributed? throughout the armored hull.

What does that mean? Traditional troop carriers (Armored Personnel Carriers, APCs, and Infantry Fighting Vehicles, IFVs) have a single big engine, at the front, where it makes a big heat signature on enemy infrared sensors and can be taken out by the first shot to penetrate the armor. But the BAE OMFV replaces the one big engine with a series of smaller hybrid-electric modules along either side of the hull. (BAE actually pioneered this approach in the Future Combat Systems vehicles cancelled back in 2009.)
