US Marine Corps picks 2 companies to build prototypes for new recon vehicle

The U.S. Marine Corps has chosen Textron Systems and General Dynamics Land Systems to begin contract negotiations to build advanced reconnaissance vehicle prototypes, the service announced July 16.

The Marine Corps will also work with BAE Systems to study the possibility of adapting an amphibious combat vehicle to become an advanced reconnaissance vehicle, or ARV.

Army Contracting Command-Detroit Arsenal in Michigan will award ARV other transaction authority contracts — which streamline the process for rapid prototyping — with the National Advanced Mobility Consortium if negotiations with Textron and GDLS are successful, said a Marine Corps statement.

Incumbent GDLS — which is the manufacturer of the Light Armored Vehicle-25 currently in service — said it submitted an ARV prototype proposal by the Corps' May 3 deadline.

Textron said at the time of the solicitation deadline that it would compete with a prototype it already built and drove nearly 750 miles, dubbed "Cottonmouth."

"General Dynamics Land Systems has aligned with the Marine Corps' 10-year transformational initiative, a key portion of which seeks to build a 21st-century reconnaissance capability that is highly mobile on land and in the water," Phil Skuta, GDLS director of business development for U.S. Marine Corps and Navy programs, said in a July 16 company statement. "This innovative, multi-domain capability will be able to control air and ground robotics and provide critical reconnaissance information through onboard and networked sensors."

Earlier this year, BAE Systems would not confirm whether it planned to participate, but several sources connected to the competition told Defense News they believed the company had submitted a bid. BAE manufactures the Marine Corps' currently fielded amphibious combat vehicle.

The Marine Corps wanted proposals for the research and development of an ARV prototype as part of its pursuit to replace roughly 600 1980s-era LAV-25s so light armored reconnaissance battalions can function as battlefield managers. The vehicles will need to operate amphibiously.

"A key Fleet Marine Force modernization initiative, the ARV Command, Control, Communications and Computers/Unmanned Aerial Systems will host a suite of C4 equipment, sensors and operate both tethered and untethered UAS," the Marine Corps statement said.

"The ARV C4/UAS will employ an effective mix of reconnaissance, surveillance, target acquisition, and C4 systems to sense and communicate," the statement continued. "These systems will enable ARV to serve as the manned hub of a manned/unmanned team and deliver next-generation, multi-domain, mobile reconnaissance capabilities."

The OTA contract will last 22 months, during which prototypes are built and evaluated. Prototypes are planned for delivery in the first quarter of fiscal 2023. The Marine Corps will spend six months evaluating the prototypes.

The service will consider data from the prototyping effort and the study on possible conversion of the ACV to an ARV, then make a decision on the way forward in FY23.

In its solicitation to industry, the Corps said it "may pursue" a production effort upon successful completion of the prototype project, which could be worth about $1.8 billion to $6.8 billion over five years. The plan is to build roughly 500 of the vehicles.

The Marine Corps recently pulled almost $100 million from Gunner Protection Kits to fund the ARV competitive prototyping phase, according to budget justification documents.

A replacement for the LAV is becoming increasingly necessary, as the existing platform was considered the most accident-prone ground combat vehicle in the Marine Corps from 2015 through 2019, based on a Government Accountability Office analysis.

Press Release,Versailles, 13 July 2021: On the occasion of the first edition of the DEFEA exhibition, that is held in Athens from July 13 to 15, 2021, Nexter is presenting the VBCI Philoctetes for the first time. This is a complete infantry combat system, armed with a remotely operated 40mm CT (cased telescoped) turret from CTAi and a medium-range missile launcher (MMP) from MBDA. It meets the Greek army's requirements for mobility, protection, modularity and firepower. Named Philoctetes, in reference to the mythological hero of the Trojan War, the vehicle will be displayed on the stand in the livery of Greek military machines.

Nexter is also presenting the 105 LG artillery gun, which is perfectly suited to simple use requiring a highly deployable fire support capability. In order to meet the Greek Army's artillery ammunition requirements, Nexter is exhibiting its range of 105mm and 155mm conventional ammunition, its smart ammunition (BONUS and KATANA), as well as propellant charges and fuses. In addition, a large sample of the ammunition catalogue can be seen on the stand: 20, 25, 30 and 40mm CT medium-calibre ammunition alongside 40, 76, 100 and 127mm naval ammunition, as well as protective smoke grenades.

In the field of medium-calibre guns, Nexter is presenting the 40CT gun on the VBCI Philoctetes, chosen by the French (RapidFire, JAGUAR), British (Ajax) and Belgian (JAGUAR CaMo) armies. The 40mm gives a real superiority of calibre compared to the 30mm and covers a wider range of targets (UAVs, aircrafts, light vehicles). The 30mm gun is also highlighted, since it equips the Mirage 2000 (30×113) and Rafale (30×150) combat aircrafts in Greece. In addition, the P20 pintle-mount system, known for its performance, ease of maintenance and reliability, is on display at the stand.

Finally, Nexter's robotics entity is exhibiting its Nerva range of ground robots equipped with various mission modules, as well as the IXOS multi-mission aerial drone, which can be equipped with an optronic ball or an explosive charge to treat an individual targe

Vergeet niet dat 11 LMB vergeintegreerd is / gaat worden met de Duitse ''Division Schnelle Kräfte'' (DSK), waar dit zelfde voertuig in gebruik genomen gaat worden. En nee het is niet dat je het zomaar geeft, maar ik kan me voorstellen dat net als de CV-90's ook bij 11 LMB meer vuurkracht gewenst is. De Duitsers kiezen in dit geval (waarschijnlijk) voor het 27 mm kanon, daar moet natuurlijk ook wel een 30 mm kanon inpassen zodat deze past binnen onze plannen voor bijvoorbeeld de nieuwe (bestudeerde) Boxer RWS's.

Waar 11 LMB nu 12.7 mm als zwaarste geschut heeft op haar (nieuwe MB) voertuigen bied de 30 mm al een veel betere capaciteit tegen gepantserde of versterkte doelen. Misschien als alternatief op de nu toch al vertraagde MB's? Natuurlijk dan slechts een aantal en niet een complete vervanging.

Dat het geintegreerd is in commando structuur is iets heel anders dan gelijk schakeling van orbat.

Onze club heeft al die chinooks en apaches om een reden. Niet om er een stel moeilijke pantservoertuigen onder te hangen. Dan snap je het optreden van onze luchtmobiel niet. Ik mag het niet hardop zeggen maar het is in feite exact de paracommando club van Belgie in nut en doel maar dan beter uitgerust. Het wil niet zwaar zijn.

Sterker nog. We hadden nog steeds een divisie gehad zonder Lumbl.
Ik had ook meer gezien in een forse uitbreiding van de Marns. Oa een 3e bataljon en misschien wat amfibische pantser/manoeuvre middelen.

Zekerstelling van de zware gevechtshelikopter. Daarbij kon men het politiek goed verkopen, want paste bij een lichte, makkelijker verplaatsbare, meer expeditionaire krijgsmacht.

Heeft de KL m.n. wel behoorlijk wat gekost, zeker.

Zou wel willen zien hoe deze Wiesel vervanger met Spike eruit gaat zien. De Wiesels met TOW's zijn net vervangen door de Spike (MELLS).

Ook daarom vind ik dit een interessant projectje voor NL en zoals ik al aangaf interessant voor zowel 11LMB als mogelijk KMARNS. Uiteraard wel alleen als ze geschikt zijn voor amfibische operaties vanaf LCU's.

Je geeft een brigade niet 'wat vuurkracht'. Een brigade vraagt daar zelf om of niet. In het geval van LMB wordt de behoefte niet gesteld. Dus niet.

Logistieke voetafdruk van LMB zou per direct verviervoudigen met zo'n apparaat in de sterkte. Dat doen ze nooit.
